US Expels Russian Diplomats In NYC, DC, And SF

USA Today reports:

The Trump administration retaliated Thursday against Russia’s expulsion of U.S. diplomats ordering the Russian consulate in San Francisco closed and reducing the number of Russians in the Washington, D.C., embassy and consulate in New York.

The closures will need to happen by Saturday, the State Department said. Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the move brings the U.S. and Russia into “parity,” with each having three consulates in each other’s country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered in July that 755 American diplomatic personnel leave Russia by this Friday. His move came days after Congress passed legislation strengthening financial sanctions on Moscow over its alleged meddling in the U.S. 2016 presidential election and support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

Looks like Russia gets to “save lots of money” too.

  • Lazycrockett

Should be interesting to see what Putin’s reaction is to this.

  • Stephen Elliot Phillips

The trump administration? Im sure the head of that administration, the one its named after, had nothing to do with this. In fact, man-baby trump, was probably throwing a tantrum as his handlers did this.

    • Palmer

They probably didn’t tell him about it until after it was done.

    • Uncle Mark

I would normally agree with you on this, however given Putin’s recent tossing of the man-baby under the bus (by acknowledging the receipt of emails from Twitler’s main lawyer), I could see Cheeto’s handlers easily convincing him to fuck over Putin for this. (Of course, you know once President Rage Machine calms down, he’ll begin worrying what other tortures Putin has in store for him.)

      • Stephen Elliot Phillips

        moral of the story:
dont make deals with the devil

        • Uncle Mark

That applies to dealing with Putin or Trump

        • Tawreos

Then how will I get…the devil get what he wants?

    • RoFaWh

Tillerson looks to be about as tall as Donny-two-scoops, but in considerably better shape. He could just shoulder D-2-s into some obscure WH closet and lock the door if the latter got obstreperous.

Is there still a State department

    • billbear1961

      barely

    • Stephen Elliot Phillips

it just hasnt been the same since benghazi

  • Jay Silversmith

If they were really serious about expelling russians, all they would have to do is look at all the russian mobsters and oligarchs living in trump properties. I hear it’s around 60% or more in some of those condos, most paid with questionable russian cash.

Donald, your buddy Vladimir is watching. He doesn’t like this, Donald.

He has the immigration papers concerning your wife, Donald.

    She’s deportable, you know.

  • billbear1961

But, but I thought racist dictator Dump was THRILLED with his master’s decision to expel U.S. diplomats from Russia!

    • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Yeah! less on the USA govt payroll. More $ for that wall

        • Are you sure? cheetolini is working overtime to dismantle the State Department. They very well may have been fired, once he discovered that they are still on the payroll.

          • DonnaLee

Who’s around to tell him? Nobody wants to stay close to him, and most won’t bother to explain things to him, since he doesn’t have the attention span to understand it anyway.

          • billbear1961

I think he’d have to have cause, biki.

          • Lordy above I hope so!

Good day to you Mr. Bear! Hope today will be a wonderful day for you. Finally got all the contractors to line up, so finally have a fully functional kitchen! Very tired of standing in the tub doing dishes in a wash tub!

On September 3 the San Francisco consulate will be converted to luxury apartments that even the Russians can’t afford.

    • bambinoitaliano

With the audio and video spying gadgets still embedded in the building? No thanks!

      • Todd20036

        I’m thinking porn studios

        • bambinoitaliano

Even the porn studio can’t afford to leak their productions for free 😛 Even if its benefiting the Russian spies and hackers.

Let the homeless bums live in it. They have nothing to hide from Russia.

I’ll bet Dump stole it, sweetie!

          • greenmanTN

The Amber Room features heavily in Clive Barker’s Coldheart Canyon.

          • I read a book that researched the movements of the dismantled Amber Room during WWII and it appears the Soviet troops accidentally bombed and demolished the castle the German’s had hidden it in during the last days of the war. The Ambe Room has since been reconstructed with amber donated to Russian by some Baltic states. It was amber they’d siezed from smugglers.

        • Paula

No problem! A good coat of paint will cover up all that garbage on the walls. Put some nice carpeting in and the floors will be fine. Or you could let the kids roller skate inside.

      • John30013

Seriously, that is one fugly building.

        • JCF

O_o Looks fine to me. I’ve seen TONS worse.

        • DaveInSF

Ugly, and wired to pick up the tiniest sounds, no doubt.

No it won’t. It’ll be reopened once this latest kerfuffle passes.

  • Talisman

Wait – is Tillerson trying to do the job now? What happened?

    • Halou

My thinking is that Tillerson is, amazingly, trying to do the job he was appointed to do. Way back in the day he was as surprised as anyone that he was nominated for the job so I think his position regarding Russia is genuine, if a bit halfhearted and slow.

  • I walk past that Russian Consulate in San Francisco sometimes. It’s this tall, out-of-place building near the ritzy Pacific Heights neighborhood overlooking the bay. All of the curtains are always closed, and there is an antenna array on the roof. Sometimes some of the creepiest people emerge from it. I’m sure almost the entire staff are spies. The last time I went by recently a Russian couple had emerged with their two little children. The little girl, dressed almost in Russian fashion with a huge bow in her hair, ran down the sidewalk toward me. Her very unpleasant-looking father called out to her in Russian, and she suddenly froze, and looked at me as if I was somehow a bad person, or an enemy. She then turned and ran back to her parents. I continued walking in their direction, and as I passed them the father gave me a rather cold look. It felt odd and out of place. Not friendly like San Francisco at all. I almost wanted to say to them, “I don’t think you’ll be here much longer.” But I didn’t. Wish now that I had.

    • That is seriously one terribly ugly creepy looking building, and your story makes it seem even creepier.

      • So glad they’re going!

        • I would be too! The Mongolian’s are caught between Russians and Chinese, and don’t like either one. They pointed out a newly built straight as an arrow road and told him, “See this road? It was paid for by Russian funds, by their mafia so they can do business with the Chinese.”

          • Franciscan

Perhaps the City should have a going-away party!

    • stevenj

Used to be a 13 unit apartment building. There are many like this and larger in Pacific Hts but mainly on the east side of the neighborhood. This area is called Cow Hollow.

      • Should it be “staff is” or “staff are”?

        • jmax

          “staff be”.

        • stevenj

I’m surprised you didn’t use the word “голубка”. Our Russian coach tried to get us to pronounce that word correctly:

        Coach: Gal-WOOP-ka.

        Us: Gal-WOOP-ka.

Coach: No. Don’t use “w”. There is no “w” in Gal-WOOP-ka. Just say Gal-WOOP-ka.

        Us: Gal-WOOP-ka.

        Coach: No. Gal-WOOP-ka.

        Us: Gal-WOOP-ka.

        Coach: WOOP!

        Us: WOOP!

        Coach: Never mind.

        • JCF

I know that feeling. You discover that sounds are as subjective as, say, color perception. [My mom always used to tell this story about the entry hallway tiles in my childhood home. “Blue” said my mom. “Green” said her friend across the street. To the best of MY memory, they were bluish-green. ;-/]

          • I can’t tell the difference between certain shades of green and certain shades of pink. I have to run everything I wear past my husband, and hope he’s not in a trickster mood.

    • JCF

Despite the creepiness of its current circumstances, I don’t get the loathing of this building’s exterior. Once it were scrubbed (to the frame) of all the spy shit (and gulag accessories), I’d move in the next day!

ETA: TBH, my fondness may be because it reminds me of one of my first apartments, in Portland OR. Similar era, brick w/ a concrete (?) lower facing. I loved that apartment…

How about looking for Illegal Russian Immigrants in Brooklyn?? The Russian Mob, surely have committed cries to warrant their deportation on top of their immigration status. (Listening to the WH spokesmen saying that hispanics in TX do not have to be concerned, unless they have committed a crime on top of their status. (As if I believe this administration!!!)

    • wmforr

I’m surprised that Trump didn’t order first responders to toss anyone off the boat who can’t prove that they are here legally, just to honor Sherriff Joe.

“The Trump administration retaliated Thursday against Russia’s expulsion of U.S. diplomats”

True Story: I’ve been in the SF Russian Consulate (back when it was the USSR’s consulate). As part of a class on nuclear arms I took at UC Davis (I was International Relations major), we got to hear the Soviet spin on the arms race (which, strangely enough, was almost a mirror of Ronald Reagan’s spin! Douchebags, “Both Sides”…)
