Steve Mnuchin Backs Away From Plan To Replace Andrew Jackson With Harriet Tubman On The $20 Bill

CNBC reports:

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin put Harriet Tubman’s role on the $20 bill in question. Mnuchin told CNBC on Thursday: “Ultimately we will be looking at this issue. It’s not something I’m focused on at the moment.” Instead, he said he’s concentrating on making sure any tweaks to U.S. currency bills thwart counterfeiters.

“The No. 1 issue why we change the currency is to stop counterfeiting. So the issues of what we change will be primarily related to what we need to do for security purposes. I’ve received classified briefings on that. And that’s what I’m focused on for the most part,” Mnuchin said.

“People have been on the bills for a long period of time. And this is something we will consider. Right now, we’ve got a lot more important issues to focus on,” he added.  President Trump has made no secret of his admiration for Andrew Jackson. He even put a portrait of Jackson in the Oval Office. In past tweets, Trump has given a shoutout to Jackson.

  • oh yes. of course Prez Putz is emamored with Jackson.

        I’d like to see Liliuokalani be recognized on our currency.

        We really and truly treated her and the people of HI terribly.

          I agree, but Mankiller would represent a kind of poetic justice: she was the first female chief of the Cherokees, who endured the Trail of Tears under Jackson’s Indian Removal policy.

          I read her autobiography and another biography of her when I was in Hawai’i. A fascinating woman, fluent in Latin, wrote a scholarly book comparing Roman and Hawai’ian mythologies. Also, a talented composer, her best-known work is “Aloha Oi”
          Queen Victoria invited her to her Silver Jubilee. But in the U.S. her brothers were thrown off a train because they appeared to be n***s.

          • Derrick Johns

            wow. Thank you for American history also. wow.

  • Uh huh. Wait, don’t tell me, they’re going to replace Jackson with Robert E Lee? Or are they just gonna let their freak flags fly and go with Hitler?

    (No, I know: These are the people who never replace vicious white dudes as national symbols for anything. In short, there’s no way a black woman is appearing anywhere on currency while the WH is controlled by white supremacists.)

    • Gustav2

      Lee will be put on the penny.

      • AmeriCanadian

        The penny should be abolished. Canada did it and it’s not missed at all. However, I do have a pet peeve with how merchants charge for items. If something costs $5.12 and I pay with cash, I’m charged $5.10. BUT, if I change my mind and whip out my debit card, suddenly the price is back to $5.12. This is wrong in my opinion. The price should be the same no matter what tender is used for payment. Yes, I’m splitting hairs but multiply by the millions of transactions per day and you’re talking real money.

        • Better still would be to abolish both the penny and nickel and by law ban any transaction greater than a single decimal point. i.e., No more 0.01 or 0.05, and also mandate other products such as gasoline be priced the same way.

          • AmeriCanadian

            I’ve always wanted to purchase exactly one gallon of gasoline and then request my $0.001 back in change. Why on earth gasoline stations get to price using tenths of a penny is beyond me.

          • Steve Smith

            They do that here in Europe too. And to make it more confusing, I’m in Italy, and use Euros, but the nearest petrol is in Switzerland, in Swiss francs. So not only are the prices shown in Francs per litre to the tenth of a cent, but then they’ll try to rip you off on the currency conversion too.

        • ColdCountry

          Huge amounts of money, actually. I remember someone decided to “fiddle” with the third place of a decimal in bank transactions once and was both shocked and terrified to see how large their “fiddle” became and how rapidly it happened.

          • Tempus Fuggit

            That sounds like a plot element from “Office Space” you’re describing.

          • ColdCountry

            I think I read it some years ago. Someone thought they’d get a little cash and suddenly saw they had embezzled millions.

          • Mow

            That was also part of the plot of the Superman movie with Richard Pryor, I believe. 🙂

          • ColdCountry

            Never saw it. Nor Office Space, for that matter.

        • Tempus Fuggit

          …except it all averages out, because if it’s $5.12 ($5.10 in cash) you lose 2¢ paying by card, but if it’s $5.18 ($5.20 in cash) you gain 2¢ paying by card.

          • AmeriCanadian

            That’s what we are led to believe. I’d like to see empirical data though because almost every item is priced to end in .49 or .99 so there is not a true random distribution of prices.

          • Tempus Fuggit

            I’m not keeping formal track, but I’m paying more than casual attention, and I thus loosely observe as many round-ups as round-downs as I go about my daily business.

            And no, it is definitely not the case that “almost every item is priced to end in .49 or .99”, and even if it were, that wouldn’t make any difference because sticker prices don’t include PST/GST/HST as applicable, and even if they did, it would only make the difference you seem to have in mind if you always only ever bought one item at a time.

            Watch this, let’s run the exercise using your claim that prices all end in .49 or .99.

            Buy three items

            $ 3.99
            $ 2.99
            $ 1.49

            Subtotal $8.47
            HST 13% $1.10

            Total $9.57 ($9.60 if you’re paying cash, a 3¢ round-up)

            Buy a different three items

            $1.99
            $33.49
            $17.99

            Subtotal $53.47
            HST 13% $6.95

            Total $60.42 ($60.40 if you’re paying cash, a 2¢ round-down)

            Buy six items

            $ 3.99
            $ 2.99
            $ 1.49
            $ 1.49
            $ 1.49
            $ 5.49

            Subtotal $16.94
            HST 13% $2.20

            Total $19.14 ($19.15 if you’re paying cash, a 1¢ round-up)

            Buy a different six items

            $ 1.99
            $ 2.99
            $ 5.99
            $11.99
            $ 4.99
            $21.99

            Subtotal $49.94
            HST 13% $6.49

            Total $56.43 ($56.40 if you’re paying cash, a 3¢ round-down)

            Now let’s remove the .49 and .99 constraints so the list looks more like what I see on my grocery receipt (in fact, unlike the figures I randomly made up on the fly above, I’m reading off an actual grocery receipt here — this one from a jurisdiction without HST):

            $2.99
            $2.49
            $7.18
            $3.00
            $2.50
            $3.50
            $3.19
            $2.19
            $6.16
            $7.65
            $6.98
            $5.87
            $5.79
            $7.03

            Subtotal $66.52 ($66.50 if paying cash, a 2¢ round-down)

          • AmeriCanadian

            I don’t think either one of us can prove or disprove that the rounding is fair. My gut instinct tells me that if it benefits the merchant, then the cash vs. credit/debit rounding policy will most likely remain in place. Modern POS systems can be changed to round the total up or down and use one total regardless of the tender method. The fact that this is not happening says a lot to me.

            EDIT: I have never encountered a three-cent round down. If the total ends in 1 or 2, it is rounded down. If it ends in 3 or 4, it is rounded up.

        She “says” some DJ groped her and gave a very strong scripted performance on the stand. That her whole career is “exaggerating stories about how awful men treat her” didn’t come up, I guess.

        • AmeriCanadian

          She won her lawsuit, which was for ONE DOLLAR. The DJ, on the other hand, was suing for three million dollars. I think that says quite a bit right there.

      • james1200

        New album, terrible single that is nevertheless streaming and selling a shitload, and an embarrassing video to go with it, where she calls out her enemies because she is petty as fuck! She’s 27 and acts like she’s 12. She is, of course, the biggest star in music (sorry Adele, sorry Bey, but it’s true!)

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tmd-ClpJxA

        Her last album “1989” was amazing, though! Great pop album.

        • Lazycrockett

          Every song that I have heard from her is the same. She’s the victim in every life decision she has made but always find an excuse to blame, friends, ex boyfriends, ex squad members, fellow pop stars, etc. She must be annoying as fuck to actually be around.

          • james1200

            She’s ridiculous because everything is so fake, even for a pop star. Her relationships, her friendships with her “feminist” squad, everything is so manufactured you wonder if there’s a real her? And is she even straight? Asexual? Human or android? And her running battle with Katy Perry, two thirty year olds acting 12, never ends. As a gay man, I am, of course, very interested in all this pettiness.

          • Lazycrockett

            Getting mad cause your tour dancers got another gig with another pop star is beyond White Privilege.

          • james1200

            katy can be just as petty but at least she put her superstardom on the line and went all IN on Trump and for Hillary and when she gets called out on her bullshit, she apologizes and says she wants to learn, instead of getting defensive.

    No surprise here. Frankly, any change to American currency is a hard sell, regardless of the content, but considering the bigot occupying the White House, I’d figured any such thing would be at least delayed till they needed to raise another stink some otherwise-slow news week.

    • AmeriCanadian

      I’ve lost count how many times a dollar coin was introduced to the American public and failed. No one seems to have the gumption to stop printing and remove from circulation dollar bills. That’s the only way to get the public to change. Force them.

      • Friday

        That *really* does not work here. Witness the Metric System debacle. Actually we still have dollar coins; they’re just rarely used cause coins mostly are used to make change in practice, and metals got expensive. Parking meters around here take em so some actually find them convenient. Given how darn much parking costs in town.

        Also it’s kind of rich-people-thinking to think a dollar bill is useless. Especially when they won’t freaking make clothes with *pockets* for gals. Seriously.

        Anyway, it was pretty dumb how they tried to *force* the metric system on daily life first. What it’s best for is science, machined things, etc. Sucks big time for things like cooking, carpentry, human-scale distance, speed in human-scale-time when we use analog time anyway, anywhere you want to be dealing in *fractions* rather than digital approximations or calculations of stuff.

        Should have done it like when countries adapt to multilingual things or decide to keep or put back their old languages on road signs and the like. Measuring systems are tools, not religions. People that use tools can get multilingual *when it’s practical to do so.*

        All you really have to do for hindsight there is look at where metric *actually* caught on and where it didn’t all these decades later. I’m glad they taught it in schools when I was a kid around that time, and you’ll find mostly metric tools in my toolchest for mechanical, (cause that’s what most cars people have these days use and I lost a lot of my old stuff to poverty long ago) but trying to ‘force’ it only pissed people off. 🙂

    “People have been on the bills for a long period of time. ”

    Doesn’t the UK, and Canada, change fairly regularly the people portrayed on their notes? I remember Darwin was on a note in the UK for a while.

    • Friday

      Yeah, the US has always been known for our boring currency, people just don’t like any change there. (And frankly the first rollout of the new bills was pretty awful-looking, at least with the little ‘gold’ “20”s scattered around it. Actual effect: Looked like roaches had been pooping on it.) There’s also long been a minority here who wonder why we don’t do like other nations and use it as an opportunity for *art,* and all, but it’s just sort of a cultural thing where it’s gotta look like the same old solid greenbacks as ever, details aside.

      (Also there’s a bit of a practical reason for that since these bills are a ‘world currency.’ If we changed em up too often how’s some dude in, say, Argentina, to know any old pretty forgery with whatever inks someone could find isn’t the real McCoy.)

          • Friday

            OK, what’s wrong with that is it really looks like it was ‘designed by committee.” 🙂

      • -M-

        She was living at the time she was an author. 😜

      • Raising_Rlyeh

        Perhaps she’s doing good things with Frederick Douglas.

  • canoebum

    Why replace the portrait of a genocidal racist with that of a woman who put her life at severe risk to free enslaved people? I, mean, why bother?

  • bkmn

    Trump probably thinks he should replace Jackson

    • Jay George

      I think we ought to float the idea that Hillary Clinton should be put on the 20 just to give the right wingers a severe case of splodey head.

      • coram nobis

        You have to be dead to be on U.S. currency. Maybe they need a dollar coin with Maggie Thatcher on it. You know: brassy, rough around the edges, tries to be a sovereign.

      • bkmn

        Or Nancy Pelosi

  • coram nobis

    “The Secretary denied rumors that they were going to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with Stonewall Jackson.”

    • carrot festival

      Shhhh….Don’t tell Trump…He thinks Andrew Is Stonewall. Not the brightest bulb. The orange ones never are.

  • Lazycrockett

    on MSNBC at the moment Pence is picking up sticks and moving them in Rockport Texas. This dude is going to primary Drumpf.

      THe popular delusion: “Sure, one day you will get rich and some Barbie doll will follow you around.”

  • Yes, he’s an evil, lying SOB, but at least he knows how to do a proper disaster PR photo-op. And apparently actually help someone a little bit.

      What? He couldn’t find any Play Doh to hand out?

      • coram nobis

        That was with Donald.

          play doh is Donald

      At first I thought, why is Becca so angry at Jimmy Carter?

  • david fairfield

    Trump hates blacks. Trump hates women. Trump loves Jackson. But I’m sure that’s all a coincidence.

  • Gustav2

    OT: The “You have committed tax fraud” phone calls are back.

    • coram nobis

      Often from “The Internal Revenue Services.”

      • Gustav2

        They are masking the number with a 202 area code, when if the IRS would call, it would be from the closest regional office in Cincinnati.

    • Friday

      Noticed that. The IRS never uses the phone that way, never mind robocalls. Known scam, just apparently more deregulation of that, cause they undid a bunch of Obama stuff.

    • Karl Dubhe

      They went away?

      They’re operating in every nation, I do believe.

  • Natty Enquirer

    Why don’t they ask Frederick Douglass for permission to use his image?

    • coram nobis

      Well, if he’s still alive, they can’t use it. You need to be dead to be on U.S. money.

      • Natty Enquirer

        Not if Kellyanne says it’s okay.

        • coram nobis

          But she’s not living, or at least undead.

    • Friday

      Admittedly I’m less than comfortable with them picking a preacher of any kind.

  • coram nobis

    How about Belle Starr for the $20, who didn’t believe in gun control, robbed people, organized rustlers, horse-thieves and bootleggers, and was a Confederate sympathizer — a perfect avatar for this administration.

      No no no. Her bumps are in the wrong place to appease this misogynist administration and party.

  • -M-

    To be fair Mnuchin didn’t bring the subject up and perhaps he just spoke poorly, but if he meant, ‘There’s already a process underway to determine whose face will be on the bill, I’m not going to interfere with that. I’m focusing on the anti-counterfeiting measures.’ then he should’ve said that clearly instead of suggesting that the choice of portrait was up for discussion.

  • twb6yz

    Trump will sell the rights to the bill to himself for $1, will put himself on the $20, then collect a trademark fee for each bill printed. Name will be big and in gaudy gold foil.

    Will outsource the printing to Ivanka’s labor force in China, and skim some if the bills and gold foil during production. MAGA!

  • Of course he is….

  • Carl

    The assholes are out in full force today.

  • Derrick Johns

    I don’t know’. We could get copies of First-Lady Melania’s shoes that she wore in Texas this week. We’ll throw those at that orange bastard.

  • The_Wretched

    If not now, when? It’s been in process for a while. You’d have to make an effort to stop the change from happening.

    • Halou

      Food for Trump’s base. OMG! Globalists / Hillary / the deep-state are in control of the treasury! Must implore Trump to take over more government functions and parcel them out to known sycophants!

  • wmforr

    Will they build an Andy Jackson monument inscribed with “The only good Indian is a dead Indian”?

    • Halou

      Make America Genocidal Again.

    He later added:

    “Besides those blacks already have many attractive monuments all around the US. Just have a look at my front lawn!”

    I’d like all the paper currency changed to have wildlife portraits on it. Brazil used to do that. Brazilian reales used to have hummingbirds, jaguars, macaws, and tropical fish on it. Not anymore, however. We could have the American Red Squirrel on the one-dollar-bill. Beavers of the five-dollar-bill. Bald eagle on the ten or one hundred-dollar-bill. Wild horses galloping on the twenty. A turkey on the fifty. And each denomination in a completely different color.

    • I’d rather have a bison or a deer, or a moose on the 5$. The 5$ beaver bill would lend itself to way to many jokes.

      • bzrd

        but we need to laugh

  • Jefe5084

    Of course.

    “It’s old. That’s the reason we don’t want to change it. It’s old. That’s all. Same reason why I’m still wearing diapers and eating from a same block of cheese. It talks, too, the cheese. We elected it president.”

  • Karl Dubhe

    Tradition. We’re going to keep him on the bill because of tradition.

    What ‘tradition’ is Jackson known for again? smgdh

  • BobSF_94117

    Could we do something for the visually impaired? Anything?

  • Fucking assholes.

    These people like to claim that only Founding Fathers and long-dead former presidents should be on our currency, conveniently pretending it’s purely coincidental that this means only white men will be on our currency.

    (a) The racist fuckwad Andrew Jackson absolutely should not be honored by being on our currency. The Trail of Tears alone should dictate that. Not to mention that while other presidents owned slaves, he was the only president to engage in the slave trade industry. But also, Jackson himself wouldn’t want it as he was bitterly opposed to the Second Bank of the US.

    (b) We should have both women and people of color on our money. Again, Founding Fathers and Dead Presidents only is just a mask for racism and sexism. Harriet Tubman is a good start.

  • BobSF_94117

    [never mind]

    I am surprised that Trump hasn’t suggested Melanoma or Youstanka.
