Hurricane Irma May Arrive As Category 4 [VIDEO]

CBS News reports:

Tropical Storm Irma is now a hurricane in the open Atlantic and is expected to strengthen into a category 4 storm as it treks west. As of late Thursday morning, Irma was a category 2 storm packing sustained winds of 100 mph and was located more than 3,000 miles away from Florida. The storm is headed west toward the Leeward Islands.

U.S. and European computer models show Irma heading in different directions. “The American models take it to the Carolinas by next Sunday (Sept. 10). The European models have it going to Cuba and possibly threatening South Florida,” News 6 meteorologist Troy Bridges said. “It’s just too early to tell.”

Irma is expected to grow into a category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds by Friday. The system is forecasted to become a category 4 storm with 130 mph winds by Tuesday. On average about 35 percent of storms develop during the month of September, with a gradual decrease October and November.

it’s still a bit of a wonder to me Is not a good part of the Tex/Mex border the Rio Grande River?? Does this wall go down the middle or on the MEX side using Mexican land Or on the Texas side using Texas land?

          • J Ascher

It would be on the Texas side – much of which is already restricted even for the nominal landowners along the river. The soil, especially in the Lower Rio Grande valley, wouldn’t support a wall without massive engineering to stabilize the subsoil.

        • JWC

I do not see good sense allowing any permanence to a wall It serves no purpose other than to antaonize

  • Tomcat

Anyone that does not evacuate from this ones path don’t deserve any sympathy.

    • Karl Dubhe

I’m not sure I’d want to plan the evacuation of a city, and an unplanned evacuation is likely to be chaotic. Imagine the population of Miami (say) getting caught on low elevation roads outside of town?

      • AmeriCanadian

I would not want to plan it either. But I will say that in the event of an evacuation by road, both sides of expressways should be allowed to be used to evacuate. If you want to drive toward the evacuation site, you need to use secondary roads. It kills me to see one side of an expressway clogged and the other side completely empty.

      • coram nobis

Yes, but where’s the nearest high ground from Miami? Orlando? Southern Georgia?

        • Karl Dubhe

I’ve no idea. I’m up in Canada.

          • coram nobis

Let’s just say that most of Florida is low ground.

          • Karl Dubhe

I heard tell that it was all swampland, at one point in time.

At least there used to be a running joke about those who bought land in Florida…

        • stuckinthewoods

My parents would evacuate to Orlando from Cocoa. Miami appears by Google Earth to be about the same elevation of a couple dozen feet. At about a hundred feet more Orlando is better I guess. In part they were seeking more substantial construction than residential.

    • AmeriCanadian

I used to think that but I became aware of people who do not have the wherewithal to evacuate on their own. If the government is unable or unwilling to provide assistance, then these people have no choice and are usually screwed.

    • The_Wretched

I’m really uncomfortable with lumping in very different segments of the population together. I know way too many people who live paycheck to paycheck and something like an unscheduled day off or having to buy 2 extra tanks of gas means they don’t eat.

      • Lizard

And that’s assuming there’s enough gas. Texas just got hit. Last time we had a big storm come through Georgia, people freaked out and started buying all the gas they could get their hands on, filling up spare tanks and milk jugs and stuff, so a lot of people just didn’t have any.

        • E.J.

Gas prices in Cobb County have already gone up 40 cents/gallon and I heard a rumor that Colonial Pipeline has shut down. If true that will mean huge price increases all the way up to New York.

      • Tomcat

Fine then they can stay. Satisfied?

        • Lizard

Oh, great. So the poor people can stay and drown?

          • Tomcat

I say they should evacuate, you say they can’t so what else is there for them to do? They can evacuate after all the roads are flooded like they did in Houston.

          • Lizard

I didn’t claim to have an answer. I just want to highlight how cruel your response was.

Maybe we could fund programs that provide resources to at-risk communities that get everyone out safely instead of “Every man for himself, and if they can’t afford it for x reason, too fucking bad.”

Not because it’s a globe, but because it’s a globe that is rotating.

    • Most powerful September hurricanes that hit the Atlantic states start off Africa in the Cape Verde island region, hence the name Cape Verde Hurricanes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Verde_hurricane

  • Latest ensemble models show it moving east. One piece of “good” news is that the stronger a Hurricane becomes, the more of an easterly track it takes — in this case out to the Atlantic — to take advantage of prevailing ocean currents. If we are fortunate, Irma will skirt Cape Hatteras and Cape Cod and skirt out in the Atlantic — as classic September “Cape Verde” Hurricanes do and just stir up a good deal of water. This is from a few minutes ago.

That model going up the Chesapeake Bay worries me — that’s how we get significant tropical storms in the DC area.

    • JWC

However Irma currently has a Hi pressure to the NE of her and Its prevailing currents may steer her in a variety of waysbut with 6 days off its anyones quessitmate

Ok, that’s good, except, there won’t be any roof left and the tower would most likely be gone too.

Hurricanes are low pressure areas and cannot go into high pressure areas so they will be directed down or up by any high pressure areas they encounter.

i go up when i encounter “high” pressure.. puff puff pass

OT (kinda): Harvey has set the wheels in motion for gas prices and availability to sky rocket. Just heard from a friend who lives in Arlington (just west of Dallas about 5 miles) that gas stations already have lines over 2 blocks long….

One place is selling gas at $8.02 per gallon…

Guess they want to be ready next time.

“Cuz state regulations against price gouging would be unAmerican!”

    • Stogiebear

I sat in line for about an hour this morning for gas, luckily it was only $2.35/gal and everyone was well behaved. Glad I took the time — put 23 gallons in my 24 gallon tank.

    • DaMoldBrok

That gas station is going to get their peepee whacked, Texas has anti gouging laws. Someone needs to make a phone call.

      • netxtown

supposedly they ended up refunding down to #3.09 a gallon….and then they were out of gas. Lots of lines. Lots of empty stations. BUT!! News is reporting there isn’t a shortage as much as there is panic creating a run on gas. It is so chicken little…..

Don’t hit the gulf…don’t hit the gulf…don’t hit the gulf….

I heard this morning that there are less people in Houston that have flood insurance now than there was during the last floods in Houston. Looks like someone has figured out it is cheaper to just take out low interest loans than to pay for government subsidized flood insurance.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

Same in Florida along the coast. So long as you don’t carry a mortgage.

Their graphic map is cool, but there’s no way the cloud cover is that high over the earth’s surface.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

A very small part of me wants to cheer on Irma to full destructive force against the south….then I remember that there are far too many good people AKA not Trumpanzees living there. All my hopes. Stay safe and whatever you do, get to higher, safer ground if you can.

    • Tread

How about having her aim for DC?

      • Johnny Wyeknot

FUCK NO!!! Good people here too! Remember, the Obamas still live here. And so do I! And I’m not sure they ever got the funds to seal the Smithsonian Natural History building roof!

  • Johnny Wyeknot

    RapidSCAT? Who names this shit?

      Sounds like diarrhea….

A similar acronym appears in the name of the public transit system of Springfield, Ohio.

God is clearly punishing the US for electing and placing so many morons in positions of power.

    Ahem.

So, are we all supposed to evacuate to Canada, right now?

114 degrees F. just outside Palm Springs at 2 p.m. … we have to spray Belle (terrier/Papillon mix) down with tepid water if she’s out in it for more than five minutes.

The conservative Texan attitude toward the federal government, being eager with the hand out but sniping at the giver reminds me of the FLDS who see it as “bleeding the beast.” If the federal government actually freaking collapsed, they’d die but they’ll never stop trying to kill it while eagerly suck its teats.

  • So the latest is this. Hurricane Jose may also form behind Irma (there is a 40% chance in the next 5 days)— and a possibility of another gulf Hurricane also exists. But this is September 1, the height of the Hurricane season and scenarios like this are very common. I do think though this year is beginning to look like 2005, which was a very busy year with over 20 named systems —
I actually moved to Florida from London three weeks before Hurricane Wilma —
I was in the eye of that thing and do not care to live through that experience again. I was hiding out in the bathroom of the villa here scared out of my mind for a few hours. Check the video out for reference. https://youtu.be/siHQgN6iFRk

Well, after years of quiet seasons and few major storms, the NWS was predicting a busier year – they were right so far!
