Two Federal Agencies Probe Lease Of Trump’s DC Hotel

Bloomberg reports:

Two federal watchdog agencies are taking an active look at the controversial General Services Administration lease for the Trump International Hotel in Washington, Bloomberg BNA has learned. Both the Government Accountability Office and GSA’s Office of Inspector General have opened probes into the lease, officials with both groups confirmed.

The GAO since June has been looking into GSA’s “outleasing” program — the path through which the Trump Organization leased the hotel — in response to a request from two Democratic congressmen who have persistently raised questions about the Trump hotel lease, a GAO spokeswoman confirmed.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a complaint Jan. 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York alleging that, in his capacity as president, Trump’s continued ownership of the hotel was in violation of the foreign emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution, which prevents public officials from accepting presents and other benefits from foreign governments that may be perceived to yield undue influence. Such presents could come in the form of hotel stays by foreign government officials, the suit alleged.

    SO MUCH WINNING!

  • skyweaver

Heartbreaking to look at that build. It’s a historic landmark that has that odious guy’s name on it.

    • TheManicMechanic

I vowed never to set foot in it again after it was vandalized with his name.

  • coram nobis

So many emoluments! Jergens should start a product line of 30 oz bottles of the stuff to keep up with demand. $3.99 at Walgreen’s.

Yes. According to sources, been done by DC artist Robin Bell.

Hey PP, O/T…you said you might be going to the TCs (MN fair)…this is the last week. I bet the pup is keeping you close to home. 🙂 How is the little (still little?) guy? 🙂

          • PickyPecker

Doesn’t look like we’re gonna make the fair this year. There’s always next year.
Paddington is learning to be good (altho, the nipping is annoying – working on that. My hands look like I got a kitty instead of a dog!)
He’s still little (21lbs) and 11wks. Altho those who meet him are shocked that he is only 11wks. LOL

          • Joe in PA

Cool. I bet he is fun.

My niece is trying to set up an annual family reunion (the first was in July this year)…I think I’ll suggest moving it to August. I haven’t been to the MN fair in many many years. It was the ONE day per year that my dad would take time off from farming/milking cows. It was a BIG deal in our house. 🙂

          • Gregory B

“Paddington” is a brilliant name for a St-Bernard pup.

    emolument
    [ih-mol-yuh-muh nt]
    noun
1.profit, salary, or fees from office or employment; compensation for services:
Tips are an emolument in addition to wages.
Renting to yourself and profiting from foreign dignitaries is an emolument to being President.

FYI: It is illegal. Just because Congress chooses to not enforce the Law doesn’t make it legal… It makes them COMPLICIT!

    • canoebum

Complicit, yes, I like “co-conspirators” better. This is a Massive Right Wing Conspiracy, from Mercer to McConnell to the Kochs. Trump is the ugly pustule on a festering ghoul.

I think it’s safe to say that asshole has more investigations, probes, inquiries, examinations, inspections, hearings, searches, explorations, reviews, lookyloos than anyone in America. When the fuck will ANYONE do anything???!

Been saying this from Day One: The entire Trump presidency is one gigantic criminal enterprise operating out of the White House.

    One. Gigantic. Criminal. Enterprise.

    • Reality.Bites

I’d say it’s several criminal enterprises, some with conflicting goals

That whole deal did seem to go very quickly. One more reason for the Trumps to get nervous. : )

  • William

The clause in the lease that no elected official “shall be admitted to any share or part of this lease, or to any benefit that may arise therefrom” is totally being complied with.

    • Karl Dubhe

If he can show that he’s losing money on the property, would that make that problem go away?

Cause I’ve heard tell of some really creative accountants. 🙂

      • ChrisMorley

‘Benefit’ legally doesn’t mean he must avoid a loss.

Simply producing an income stream is the ‘benefit’.
He could fix things to lose bigly but would still be guilty of receiving a ‘benefit’.

        • Karl Dubhe

          Good. 🙂

        • McSwagg

Also, reduced taxes for the dRumpf Cartel due to loses from the hotel would be a tangible benefit and should be taken into account.

  • Ken M

I’ve said this before, but if he’s still around in Febrary (and sadly he probably will be,) the State of the Union address will be very interesting. Providing he even has it that is.

    • Karl Dubhe

Everything’s great! I’m the Greatest! Look at all the golden statues of horses that I’ve installed here! (recorded applause and cheers)

      /s

    • Lori

He’s required to make an address to Congress and I see no reason why he wouldn’t do so. It’ll just be Trump’s usual bragging and list of grievances instead of an actual State of the Union.

      • Chris

Yes, but I don’t think it’s really specified as to when or how often. The phrase is “he shall, from time to time, give information to the congress on the state of the union…..” . Perhaps someone with better knowledge of the law can chime in, but I think the only thing making it annual in January is tradition, and we all know how respectful he is of tradition.

        • Lori

I don’t think respect for tradition will factor in. He’ll do it because it’s an opportunity to go on TV. The only way he’ll pass that up is if his support among his base has eroded to the point that it’s obvious the ratings will be terrible. Otherwise I can’t imagine that his ego will be able to pass up a chance to go on TV and brag/whine while Congress is forced to sit and listen.

      • David L. Caster

No address required, just a report that could be written and officially delivered to Congress. The President is not required to appear in person or make a speech.

        • Lori

the only way that Trump opts for the written over the televised oral presentation is if his staff writes it and then stuffs him in a closet to keep him away from the cameras.

  • Jim Maloney

‘infighting’…just the way Trump likes it.

  • McSwagg

OT: J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans wanted to raise $200,000 for disaster relief. The total now stands at $6 million raised with a revised goal of $10 million. What a way to leverage your fame for good.

    Lock him up!

  • Calvin

I hate that he’s leasing that beautiful building that belongs to the people. Kick him out! Then lock him up!

    • McSwagg

The only image that would top the Press-i-Dunce’s perp walk from the front entrance of the hotel would be a perp walk out of the White House.

  • bkmn
  • lymis

There’s more to it than just that – doesn’t the lease specifically prohibit the lessee from any government job? That the lease must be given up if the lessee accepts ANY government position, not just the Presidency?

That sounds like a crime right there, not just the emoluments issue.

Though, I think we can overlook it if Trump agrees to resign and we can void everything he’s done in office. By Trump’s own organizational rules, if at any time the winner cannot fulfill the obligations of the job, the title goes to the runner up. I think that should apply.
