TEXAS: Megachurch Pastor Joel Osteen Does Damage Control Over Response To Hurricane Harvey [VIDEO]

ABC News reports:

Pastor Joel Osteen said today that his Lakewood Church has been taking people in “from the very beginning” of Harvey as he pushed back against criticism that the church did not initially welcome evacuees. “We were here for people. We were a shelter,” Osteen said today on “Good Morning America.” “We were taking people as soon as the floodwaters receded,” he added.

Osteen also called it “totally not true” that the church, which can hold more than 16,000 people, did not open early enough for the residents of Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city that has been devastated by Harvey.

“I think somebody created that narrative that somehow we were high and dry and none of that is true,” he said. “This building — it was a safety issue and we took people in from the very beginning.” On Sunday, Lakewood Church posted on Facebook that it was “inaccessible due to severe flooding” and directed displaced residents to shelters in the city.

As you can see below, this morning Osteen appeared on just about every news show with his defense.

It may be charming in mythology. In his case, it’s just hypocrisy.

Is that a helicopter landing pad at the top of the photo? Wouldn’t surprise me.

      • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

He also flew his family out of Houston before things got bad. Some of his neighbors have been evacuated. Shame if that architectural monstrosity was flooded — all that veneer would fall off faster than Sarah Palin’s sobriety does every day at noon.

  • Sam_Handwich

“We were a shelter,” Osteen said

    Yes, a tax shelter

      oh bravo!

  • Rex

Since when do you have to be asked to help people? I thought that god commanded it.

  • Daveed_WOW

Wow. That’s an impressive amount of lying. Yikes. It would have been better if he just said it was unsafe for people to travel to his building and that he was not prepared to help them. That would be almost reasonable. Instead, but went Full False Witness.

PS: The eyejob is pretty terrible.

You mean people who didn’t have any.

    • BJORN RAGNVALDR

      Yeah, brown people.

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

The flood pictures he posted were from 2001. When he said his church was flooded, he was lying. By his own standards, he’s going to hell.

Between my outrage…I had to laugh at “Compaq Center”. LOL

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

For once, I’d like people to get a clue that only the klieg light of publicity & possible decrease in donations made him backpedal and to STOP GIVING HIM MONEY.

    • Uncle Mark

And you know, the dumbfuck could have actually made himself look good and brought in more money, if he demonstrated real concern from the get-go. He could have created a special charity, food & supplies collection effort, and gotten a lot of free publicity offering shelter…but he showed this week how self-centered and short-sighted he is.

I hope a number of the gullible have seen the light where the scamvangelists are concerned

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

It really is dumb. I hope Houstonians now treat him like a pariah instead of giving him a pass.

        • Jonathan Smith

          yeah, so. No.
          sad to say

        • FAEN

          They’ll give him a pass.

      • BJORN RAGNVALDR

want to bet that chapter and verse never gets mentioned in the Lakewood “church”

  • tim870

He also immediately posted a money grab for his church so it could “help” the people of Houston. Grifters gotta grift!

    • William

Church? I saw The Cure play there back in ’89.

    • customartist

      Fish swim, birds fly

    • popebuck1

He’s asking people to donate to Samaritan’s Purse, run by fellow grifter Franklin Graham. Any idea of the over/under on the percentage of said donations that will actually reach flood victims?

      • tim870

I’ll say 15% to the victims. the rest is “handlers” fees and “administrative costs.”

  • Steve Smith

“Precautious”? Is that a word? I think he means “we didn’t want to let dirty wet poor people into our nice clean church”.

  • Uncle Mark

Looking at the CNN interview, I was shocked at seeing a big pile of shit in front of all the food and supplies…before I realized that it was Joel Osteen. We know the real truth is that he didn’t want to leave his $10+ Million mansion during the week to pretend to care about the great unwashed

  • Jean-Marc in Canada
    • Joe in PA

Niiiiice! I loved your response to Ainsley Airhead. 🙂

    • BJORN RAGNVALDR

The folks that were banned by Joel should post go ahead and post their banned notices.

    • UrsusArctos

Someone ate his Wheaties™ this morning. Good on ya!

    “inaccessible due to severe flooding”

And yet no pictures have surfaces showing this. Hmmm, do tell.

  • Baylee Peach

You know, Joel Osteen’s plastic surgeon is amazing! I have never seen human skin stretched so tight and yet still be flexible enough to move. Astounding piece of surgery, honestly.

    • Treant

They’re trying to keep the demons that power his soul inside. The containment is doomed to fail. Don’t be there when it does.

    • Uncle Mark

Are you sure it’s skin? Looking at the level of reflection, I was thinking is was plastic…to go with his personality

    • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

He goes to the same surgeon as Lara Trump / Jocelyn Wildenstein…

    • ByronK

He looks like he should be starring in a Vegas show with lions and tigers.

Been jerked so tight he apparently has to talk out his asshole, good thing it had teeth, too.

    • Tom Furgas

That would explain the rictus smile.

  • bambinoitaliano

The unfortunate thing after suffering something like Harvey is the follow up of shit storm opportunist like this arsehole being left at your doorstep asking for your money.

    • FAEN

“I know you have little to nothing after the storm but I need a new wing on my giant home so I’ll take the little you have.”

  • He has had about ten stories on this so far. I have yet to believe any of them.

  • Texndoc

What’s amusing is the hardcore evangelicals don’t like him anyway. Describe his church as “I’m OK You’re OK pop schlock”.

    • Ken M

      Term is Jealous

    • William

It’s more like “I’m OK and you can only be OK if you give me money”.

    • Uncle Mark

That reminds me of all the obvious bitter rivalries between the scamvangelists. I remember how quickly the scamvangelists turned on Jim Bakker (while he was screaming about how they tried to screw him over) upon his arrest, or how they quickly distanced themselves from Ted Haggard. Even Dr Dobson couldn’t even spare a full hour to help/counsel Haggard before announcing that he was in essence irredeemable.

  • Scott Fitler

It’s weird but his voice with his ever-plasticizing face make him seem like he’s halfway along his transformation to Dorothy Michaels.

  • Jefe5084

    Charlatan. Conman. Carnival barker.

  • KaBoomBOX

He doesn’t pay attention to social media, except when he blocks his critics.

  • Jonathan Smith
  • Chris Gardner

It’s ironic that the smaller, community-driven houses of worship were out in the streets helping people, taking them into the churches, mosques, and synagogues. Those with the least resources are doing the greatest good.

    • Uncle Mark

Isn’t that always the way? Those with the least (or once having been in that place) doing the greatest good for people

  • Blake Mason

How appropriate that he is standing is a sea of diapers.

    • Tiger Quinn

Not even real, he’s standing in front of a green screen.

  • Karl Dubhe

How many people know he’s in his mid 50s?

You ever see a straight man with a face like that after 50?

    • Jonathan Smith

      yes. after SHITLOADS of plastic

  • AC

A president* colored orange like Pontormo drapery; his chief apologist an emaciated figure ala El Greco; and now a “godly” man as pale and misshapen as the most demonic Bosch creature. It’s a Mannerist world.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Is the apologist you’re referring to Kellyanne? Cuz I can’t picture Sarah Huckabee Sanders in an El Greco painting.

      • AC

Yes. Huckabee presents her own peculiar mannerist visage, though almost 400 years later – obviously inspired by Botero.

        • Jonathan Smith

i am sorry, was that “Botero” or “Botox”?

  • William

Traffic cameras have shown that the streets around the arena are clear.

    • FAEN

Who are you going to believe William-the cameras or the grifter 😏.

  • Rocco

All that blinking and toothiness scream deception. Creepy looking…he looks like the banjo player from “Deliverance.”

  • Scott E D

    That is one bad facelift.

    • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

And when did Jesus ask his followers to give him money for a face lift….

      • OdieDenCO

right after they bought him a mansion

        • Jonathan Smith

          two corninthians?

          • UrsusArctos

Aren’t two corinthians there to “lift his luggage”?

  • romanhans

To summarize Mr. Osteen: the church was open to evacuees from the very beginning — well, when the flood waters started to recede, which is maybe more toward the end — but definitely after they cleared all that flood water out of the church — or wait, maybe it was after folks posted on Twitter that the church WASN’T ACTUALLY FLOODED — but possibly after they saw people floating by and the city said, “You have a giant, dry, empty space. Why don’t you fuckin’ DO SOMETHING?”

ETA: Trump has finally proven to be a role model for something: lie your ass off knowing Fox TV viewers are too stupid to notice.

  • skyweaver

Compare this jerk to Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale (if you are from or live in Houston, you know Mattress Mack) – his mattress stores are open to both refugees and National Guard who are coming in to help rescue people. And have been for days now. Shut up, Joel, you’re a scam artist.

    • William

Mattress Mack is a humanitarian. Olsteen is something you have to scrape off your shoe.

      • skyweaver

Mack has consistently shown up to donate mattresses and furniture to people in poverty and to help his community. Consistently. Even when the news cameras aren’t rolling.

        • William

Gayle King got in a dig on CBS This Morning.
“Take someone like Mattress Mack and compare him to Joel Osteen.”

    • FAEN

Please clear this up for me-while I’m happy for what Mack is doing isn’t he a Cheeto supporter and rather homophobic?

      • skyweaver

Actually I don’t know. Does anyone else know? My memory of him is growing up in the Houston in the 70s and 80s.

        • FAEN

          No worries.

      • McSwagg

Yes, he’s quite the conservative. Yet that doesn’t diminish his humanitarianism like it does for most conservatives. Despite his politics, he has earned respect in this regard.

        • FAEN

As I stated earlier-I’m glad he’s doing what he’s doing. I was just curious about his politics.

          • McSwagg

I don’t endorse his politics, but he is generally a force for good in the city.

          • FAEN

I remember when he was one of the major sponsors of the Masters and boy did it burn his ass that Federer won multiple times. There was something in his expression that just came across as overly ‘ra ra Murica’…like he couldn’t believe the Swiss guy beat the American.

          • McSwagg

Yeah, he’s uber patriotic to the point of parody.

  • shellback

A “church” allegedly doing the “lords” work, shouldn’t need permission from the city to open their scam-center to help people in need. Isn’t that what jeezis wanted?

    • popebuck1

Well, all those other churches and mosques managed to snap into action somehow – even without an engraved invitation from the city. But I guess they’re just not as “precautious” as Osteen. Those idiots don’t have any standards – they’ll rush out and help just ANYBODY.

  • Tiger Quinn

I’m sure you noticed but that asshole is standing in front of a green screen. Those donations aren’t even real.

  • Ken M

Backlash? There’s no backlash like free advertising. Can anyone name any of the other houses of worship that DID open their doors and aid in the storm from the beginning?

  • Texndoc

The hair! Multicolored and waxed straight up. I remember Robert Tilton (Pastor Gas) and the background story it was a look to make them appear Moses descending from the mount in The Ten Commandments.

    • customartist

      I remember

    • Gustav2

      It is almost Trumpian.

  • Acronym Jim

He needs to fire his plastic surgeon. That eye work is atrocious.

    • Treant

When it’s your 396th surgery, there’s only so much they can do with the cartilage they have left.

  • customartist

It is not JUST Joel Osteen who defies Biblical tenets of getting a camel through the eye of a needle.

It is his FOLLOWERS who enable him in his defiance.

  • William

I have a friend who lives a couple blocks from Lakewood ‘Church’. She is 71 years old and disabled. Will Joel please be good enough to take her a few plates of food so she can get through the day?

    • Jonathan Smith

fuck no. she should be praying to gawd for food.
      lazy woman.
      /s

    • FAEN

Will she be paying with MC or Visa?

    • edrex

      “god’s got this.”

  • FAEN

Hiding in your 10 million dollar home and closing your church during a disaster is EXACTLY what Jesus would do right Joel!

And you have the fucking gall to refer to LGBT’s as “not gods best.”

Fuck you grifter asshole, and that plastic wife of yours.

    • customartist

      Amen

  • Vira

Why does Joel Osteen look like an inflatable sex toy?

    • Uncle Mark

Ewww…If so, then he needs to be exiled to the Island of Misfit Sex Toys

      • Treant

“Oh, honey, no. You have to go over to the other side, the Half Island of Seriously Unsexily Misfit Sex Toys. I mean, Rule 34 and all that, but we’ll call you in 2136 or so when mutants become popular.”

    • edrex

      it’s the mouth.

  • Uncle Mark

Someone’s in desperate need to take up a collection to have that horrible, deep-set smirk removed. A collection of steel boots to the face and to the bank account should fix that

  • worstcultever

Maybe it’s just my own thoughts of aging and mortality – but honestly, what do these money-hoarding con artists think they’re actually gaining? Ok, some show-offy material bullshit for a while – but what then? The clock ticks and someday they’ll be all alone with nothing but their frailty, just like the rest of us. Every swaggering billionaire I look at, I see the eventual helplessness that nothing can save them from.

    • Vira

Oh, please….it’s human nature. It’s about the Here-and-Now, not the Hereafter. They want to live as well as they can for as long as they can, and wield as much influence and exercise as much power as possible in the process.

But they are decidedly NOT about helping other, or about any transcendent values.

The more cynical side of me gets it; the idealistic side of me wants to feed them to alligators.

    • Uncle Mark

Hell, take a look at Pat Robertson. He looks like he’s collapsing in on himself to form a black hole of corruption and greed. One would think that if he actually believes in God or was even concerned about the legacy he would leave behind, he would really be trying to help the world…being so close to death, himself.

After my parents retired, after working hard their whole lives, they volunteered their time teaching…well into their 70s, because they felt that life was good to them, and they wanted to give back to society. I doubt those charlatans will ever feel or understand that.

    • Natty Enquirer

You could ask the same question of every human being. Why bother with anything? Helplessness and death are the inevitable result.

      • UrsusArctos

It’s the period before that, where you help others, that matters. That and striving to piss off fundamentalists. Hey, everyone needs goals! ;D

    • William

I had similar thoughts about Joe Arpaio. His personal hell will be his final days in a nursing home with a majority Latino staff.

      • Stubenville

Although Arpaio royally deserves icy bedpans, the staff will probably remain professional (if aloof.)

Poor boy, being asked to give, instead of receive money. For once.

“We were just being precautious, but the main thing is the city didn’t ask us to become a shelter then.” -Pastor”

So you watched the City of Houston go underwater and you didn’t offer your services as a shelter because “the city didn’t ask us to”?????? You slimy charlatan, I hope this destroys the myth perpetuated through your empty lies and your grifting “ministry” once and for all. Every church that isn’t all in helping during this disaster has no right to call themselves a “ministry”.

    • bzrd

they can call themselves whatever they like but should not receive any tax breaks ever!

      • UrsusArctos

I’m OK with exempting the sanctuaries, but not the other revenue generating operations they have. That scam has allowed churches to convert amazing amounts of “donated” property into cash and run businesses tax free under the guise of “Because: Jesus”.

    • Stubenville

“slimy charlatan” is a much kinder way of phrasing what I was thinking. Joel probably realized if his sanctuary (ha!) was filled with the dispossessed, he wouldn’t be able to conduct his weekly fleecings services.

    • McSwagg

Every TV channel with a news room in Houston had 24/7 coverage with open shelters and other info scrolling across the screen, including many. many “houses of worship” offering assistance. He should have gotten the hint from that alone. This “pastor” is slime from the bottom of the cesspit.

  • Dean
  • So…if his church really was flooded, then why did he block anyone who questioned it? You know, like me? What a fraud.

    • edrex

just following in the footsteps of jesus who as we all know from vacation bible school famously blocked all who questioned him.

    • McSwagg

You weren’t “blocked”. You were “rebuked” in the name of Cheesus Chrusty. It’s what any good Pharisee would do.

      /s (just in case)

  • kareemachan

    Jeebus doesn’t like liars, joey.

Also, tweeting almost trumpesque tweets isn’t damage control.

  • John Ruff

    More Christian lies

  • Lori

So, we don’t need government because private charity will take care of the needy, but the church didn’t offer aid to the needy because the government didn’t ask them to? Right. Sure. Those two ideas are completely compatible.

    Also, safety issue my ass.

  • 2patricius2

Joel likes nice things. How could he open the place as a shelter and risk his nice things would get dirty? Be interesting to see how his initial reaction to the hurricane and keeping his church closed will play in the long run. Will he find things going downhill with many of his trusting followers, as they realize he is a fraud?

While mosques and furniture stores were opening to evacuees, he was still complaining of massive flooding around his church preventing the doors from being opened, and was offering prayers from his mansion.

“Will he find things going downhill with many of his trusting followers, as they realize he is a fraud?”

I think I know that type pretty well…maybe only one percent will, but they’ll keep their traps shut and keep going through the motions.

      That was last year.

      That was last year.

      He covered at the time.

    • UrsusArctos

      Last year, but still precious.

At least we can declare that Harvey has done one thing right — that is, the storm has exposed what a fraud Osteen and his “wealth hoarding prosperiity gospel” are.

  • HZ81

Whoa, he worked the morning circuit like a stripper on his fave poll.

I actually heard him on CNN trying to dig out of the mess his indifference to human suffering with bullshit.

    Because, Jesus.

  • nocadrummer

I call BS. As you can see, Lakewood “church” not exactly at “street level”. Houston has had floods since before I was born (60+ years ago) so no one in their right mind would build something that flooded regularly.
Insurance companies wouldn’t insure something vulnerable to regular flooding. And it was built as a stadium long before the Osteens came along.

Methinks his followers are just like Trump’s followers, and this crapola move on his part don’t mean shit to them.

    • edrex

pretty certain that the venn diagram of osteen followers and trump followers shows a snug overlap.

  • SilasMarner

And he continues to lie to people.

What is with his accent? He sounds like a bad western drawl to hide something British/Irish . He is fake at so many levels. I want to smack that shit eating grin and nod off his face.

    • McSwagg

That’s the “Deep East Texas” drawl he’s working there. It’s ubiquitous in these parts.

      • UrsusArctos

I was told long ago by a Texan with deep roots there that accent was a “Piney woods, all hat – no cattle, wannabe TX accent”.

        • William

The East Texas accent is from ancestors who came from western Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. You can also hear it in parts of west Texas.

To me, they all sound gay.

  • ColdCountry

He was waiting to be asked? FFS, dude, is that what your bible tells you to do? What a loser of a human being!

  • I’ve been praying that his million dollar plane(s) are o.k

  • cleos_mom

I’m sure plenty of people have noticed the absence of claims from “God’s people” that their god was smiting the wicked. But they are keeping busy citing alternative science as proof that climate change and its consequences are a hoax.

Nothing like being shamed into it

  • Paul_in_Dallas

Osteen isn’t worried about the rising tide.
His only concern is for the rising tithe.

    • MassageBear

      Or rather the dropping tithe.

  • JWC

Back peddling and denial Osteen is a horses ass and doing what he is doing now he should have been upfront and done it from the start NOT shamed into it

  • Cuberly

Um, you can find vids on twitter of people that went to the church early yesterday. Doors were closed, no flooding and the roads to the church were passable. This is one of a few that I know of.

And I totally love this guy!

    • William

The below grade portion of US 59 (Southwest Freeway) didn’t even flood.

      • Cuberly

        How are you holding up?

        • William

I’m fine, 120 miles west of Houston. We had a lot of rain, 16 inches. It came down slow enough that the roads here never flooded. A 3 inch downpour will cut off my neighborhood. The power only went out a few times, and only for a few seconds.

          • Cuberly

Good, glad to hear it. The images on TV are just astonishing.

    • That was pure black comedy.

      • Cuberly

Heh..he went there to assist Joel in any way he could. “Hep I’m drownin in really bad publicite'”.

  • Ginger Snap

What a sack of shit this excuse for a human being is.

  • RJ Bone

The shitty part about all of this is that it won’t affect him, long term.

He gets a little bad press, does the usual worthless christian mea culpa and is showered with praise and tears and money, money, money.

Knowing his type I’d be willing to bet he did it on purpose or just didn’t even care to try otherwise.

He’ll be fine. His flock will shower him with praise and money.

    Everyone else suffers.

    Yup, the textbook christian.

  • JCF
  • Rob Spangler

Mega Con who preaches the mega false prosperity gospel i.e. give me your money and you will be rich!!! Hell I don’t want those dirty people in my church!!! It will cost money to have the carpet cleaned!!1

  • MassageBear

Wow and his church doesn’t have any showers, even though it used to be a sports arena (huh..guess he paid to rip out all the showers?). Well, he could have the refugees bussed to his swimming pool. Looks like quite a spacious bathhouse just beyond the pool, too.

  • Homo Erectus

He always reminds me of Marjoe Gortner.
