REPORT: Trump Lawyer Michael Cohen Asked For Putin’s Help On Moscow Trump Tower Deal During Campaign

The Washington Post reports:

A top executive from Donald Trump’s real estate company emailed Vladimir Putin’s personal spokesman during the U.S. presidential campaign last year to ask for help advancing a stalled Trump Tower development project in Moscow, according to documents submitted to Congress Monday.

Michael Cohen, a Trump attorney and executive vice president for the Trump Organization, sent the email in January 2016 to Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s top press aide.

“Over the past few months I have been working with a company based in Russia regarding the development of a Trump Tower – Moscow project in Moscow City,” Cohen wrote Peskov, according to a person familiar with the email. “Without getting into lengthy specifics the communication between our two sides has stalled.”

Luckily, there are plenty of other things to make fun of him about….

  • customartist

Oh but there is no collusion!

  • The_Wretched

Being careful here, how common is it for big real estate development plans to pull-in Putin?

At the very least, this shows a willingness and ability to contact the highest levels of the Russian government. That doesn’t appear to be the least difficulty to them.

Rothstein told the Guardian he had resigned on Monday after learning that Blavatnik had given a substantial donation to the Trump campaign, which he called “incomprehensible and irresponsible”.

Blavatnik, who is an associate of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, is reported to have donated $1m to Trump’s inauguration committee, as well as millions of dollars to his campaign.

    Release the emails!

  • Patrick

But they’re emails written by men, so they don’t mean anything. Only emails by women demand criminal investigation. (In the Bizzaro Republican universe.)

  • DURING THE CAMPAIGN.

This is key. Donald was trying to snag huge real estate deals in Russia, with the Kremlin’s direct help, during the campaign. As usual, when Donnie the Screaming Shitgibbon wants something from someone, he goes into full-on courting-mode.

The quid-pro-quos are fucking obvious at this point.

When the real estate stuff fell through (probably because Putin knew damned well that a Trump Tower Moscow would’ve been, as I said, too fucking obvious), they switched to gas/oil deals. Somewhere offshore, quite possibly at that Cyprus bank run by Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, 0.5% of the multi-billion dollar Gazprom/Rosneft sale is probably sitting in one of Donald’s bank accounts.

    • But never, ever forget: At least 90% of the GOPers in Congress don’t see any particular urgency in dealing with or even acknowledging any of this, most especially Ryan and McConnell.

Reason? Tribal loyalty, tax cuts for the rich, and the fact they too are likely recipients of laundered Russian oligarch money via SuperPACs.

      • The_Wretched

We have a national security interest in knowing where all the ‘dark money’ in the US political system originates. SCOTUS got Citizens United and related cases flat wrong.

      • Tulle Christensen

What I do not understand is would seem they would get those tax cuts easier and faster with Pence at the helm

        • Many have differing interpretations and guesses as to why this is so, but this is mine: The GOP is paralyzed. And they’re so used to doing nothing, it’s their default strategy.

Plus they’re terrified of Trump’s supporters.

          • -M-

At least three different factions in the GOP: the regular sleaze like Ryan, the teahadiis and religious nuts, and the full on Trumpists. I think only the regular sleaze and the few stray moderate or business-oriented Republicans remaining care how bad he screws up or how it looks.

    • -M-

Or P- wasn’t going to payout for Donnie until he actually delivered.

As its becoming apparent that the Trump organization is essentially an organized money-laundering crime ring, its also becoming obvious they aren’t even good at it. The egos of all involved are so huge, and the raw naked entitlement so brazen, that there appears to be little attempt at any restraint or discretion.

          • The_Wretched

the reporting is buried and google-fu is weak today. There was a 45 minute deplaning delay for Trump 7/15/2016 on a Friday. It was to push Trump to take Pence as his VP choice. Manafort, Bannon and Kushner (at least) were present. It wasn’t until quite a bit after that that the details came out (and we might still not quite have them).

          • customartist

The Whitehouse has formally acknowledged that the Transition Team was aware of the Flynn Russian meetings. Pence was the HEAD of the Transition team, yet he lied to the American public saying that he did not know about Flynn’s Russian meetings. But will he tell the same lie to the Congress and Senate? My bet is that no [Republican] Congressman or Senator will ask him this question.

        • Bluto

Taking out the entire executive branch simultaneously would be sweet but if we have to do it piece meal then so be it. pence is scum but he’s a slight improvement.

…..Yeah, the animation is nice and I understand the message its trying to send, but it also kind of reeks of anti-millenial bullshit.

      • greenmanTN

I didn’t view it as being about any particular group or age, just about how we look at things like “stardom” and entertainment, online dating, while ignoring what’s right in front of us. Also alienation, which might have a stronger meaning for me since I live in a small town in a red state.

Recently there have been made been many examples of people who DO see what’s going on and have stood up to it, and I’m very glad for that. Again, it was more a mood thing, and the constant barrage of offenses against our country, or the country we thought we lived in, is disheartening.

Plus I like old animation and that was a perfect imitation of the style.

        https://youtu.be/E156ikOHmXI

        • Phillip in L.A.

Interesting post, greenman, and I like the animation style of both your posts.

And while “alienation” is certainly subjective, and I do not mean in any way to lessen your feelings, or mock you, or even suggest you have not experienced it, I might argue that it can be worse to feel alienated in a huge room FULL of people (e.g., a large city)–where theoretically one might expect to find a few more copacetic folk–than in a small town. Doesn’t mean I’m right, though! 😉

This event was remarked on at the time as odd and rather unbecoming a presidential candidate. More to the point though, April 2016 was the same month the Mayflower Hotel meeting happened.

Just my spitballing here, but by April, the Trump Tower Moscow deal had fallen through. Mayflower was Russia, Turkey, and Trump campaign talking gas/oil pipeline and company sales deals. But my guess is Donald loves his penis compensation towers and so thought that perhaps it could be revived, whereas Putin & the Kremlin knew the covert gas/oil deal would be way easier to cover up than Donald’s usual gaudy self-promoting properties.
