The “Weeping Nazi” Surrenders On Felony Charges

The New York Times reports:

A white nationalist whose behavior at the violent gatherings this month in Charlottesville, Va., brought him notoriety after he was featured in a widely viewed documentary, has turned himself into the authorities in Virginia days after warrants were issued for his arrest.

Earlier this week, the University of Virginia Police Department said the charges against the man, Christopher Cantwell, 36, included two felony counts of illegal use of tear gas, and one count of malicious bodily injury by means of a caustic substance.

The police said the warrants stemmed from a torch-lit march on university grounds the night of Aug. 11; the demonstration preceded a large rally the next day in which a 32-year-old woman was killed after someone drove into a crowd.

    “Don’t blink!”

  • Tawreos

I wonder who will give him a harder time in prison, any of the minorities that get locked up with more frequency than white guys for his hateful views or the Nazis already in prison for crying about the charges?

    • Stogiebear

      His lips aren’t that purdy.

OT: Many won’t remember this. Jenny Jones hosted a shock TV show. In 1995, she had on a guest, a heterosexual man who had a secret admirer. It was revealed that the secret admirer was a gay man. 3 days after taping the show, the heterosexual man killed the gay man.

That heterosexual man was released from prison on Tuesday.

    http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/A-1995-TV-show-surprised-him-with-his-gay-secret-11952830.php#photo-13883783

    • I do remember that. Way back when, those kinds of shows were one of the few places homosexuals could be seen on TV. I wasn’t out yet, and regularly seeked out those topics so I could see another gay.

      • clay

not that they were generally healthy individuals, like some psychologists a decade after removing homosexuality from the DSM were still saying, “But the only homosexuals who come to me are sick.”

        • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

And the only homosexuals who visit Home Depot are looking to buy things for the home. Funny how that works.

      • Gerry Fisher

I don’t remember the 90s being quite that bleak for LGBT representation. Roseanne had some gay characters, Ellen came out a few years later. Pedro Zamora was on MTV in the early 90s. However, it could be that the 90s looked good to me because the 60s and 70 were so much bleaker.

The 80s were a break through year for independent cinema, but most of the TV coverage seemed to center around AIDS.

        • I was hungry for any representation, whether good or bad. So yes, I seeked out those portrayals too. And oh boy, when I found the gay chatrooms/newsgroups on AOL, jackpot!!

      • Lars Littlefield

And to think all you had to do was come over to my house. I could have shown you lots more than just another gay. πŸ˜€

        • I do remember a gay couple who I befriended around that time. They were 28 and 29. I was 15. Great sex. Judge as you will. But I knew what I wanted. (incidentally, they are still together.)

    • Do Something Nice

I found the episode – that never aired – here. It is annotated with commentary as well.

    • Tawreos

I wonder if prison changed his outlook on homosexuals?

      • Do Something Nice

I’m not sure, but I remember reading that he suffered from mental health issues.

        • Tawreos

Well, mental health issues are a given if he killed someone just for liking him.

          • Mark McGovern

Agreed. No excuses for what he did, but the circumstances were not standard as they all unraveled on national TV. So, someone with pre-existing mental health issues faced with such surreal circumstances (in his view national, public, ridicule and shaming) – who knows what could happen. Missey Jones is lucky this mentally disturbed person didn’t take her out right on camera.

          • Lars Littlefield

            IMHO he should have.

    • Silver Badger

One wonders how he feels about gay people now?

      • clay

If I remember correctly, he’s okay with them and has expressed significant regret. Almost as soon as his lawyer’s “gay panic” defense failed, the guy admitted he felt shame and fear that others would think he was gay, himself and that he much preferred being medicated.

        • Silver Badger

Thank you. The “much preferred being medicated” part may cause him some trouble in the future.

          • clay

            pre-existing condition!

          • Lars Littlefield

With Trump in the White House most days I prefer to be medicated, too.

    • Lars Littlefield

I remember that tragedy vividly. I joined hundreds of angry LGBT protesters outside of Jenny Jone’s WMAQ-TV studio screaming to have her address the murder, and take responsibility. Things looked hopeful when the murdered man’s family sued Jenny Jones and won a $25,000,000 judgement. But an appellate court threw out the ruling. May Jenny Jones writhe in burning hell.

      • Tawreos

I am sure a “real” man like him can take it without lube.

      • jo gerardo

I was listening to an interview of a felon on a news radio show. When asked about gay sex and what they used for lube, he responded with, “jelly”, in a low drawl. Weeks after that interview, they’d play that little snippet, “jelly”, to extend a laugh.
I think about that every time I’m at a diner and see packets of jelly.

  • Talisman

Hopefully, they’ll give him something to cry about…

I’ve seen tweets that say they’ve identified all seven of the attackers.

        • GayOldLady

It looks as if some of them have been identified. I don’t know what the status of the investigation is. I need to research it a bit more.

        • -M-

They need to be found and punished. But I don’t want the police to rely entirely on amateur online sleuths in identifying them. So, I still have a little patience for the pace of this story.

So many of these type of people abuse the spirit of what laws such as the right to assembly and the right to free speech intend, and then get extremely upset when the law is applied to them. Sorry, no; the rest of us don’t have to support your ascent to fascism.
