Google Cracks Down On Extremist YouTube Videos

Bloomberg reports:

Starting on Thursday, Google will police YouTube like it never has before, adding warnings and disabling advertising on videos that the company determines crosses its new threshold for offensive content. YouTube isn’t removing the selected videos, but is instead setting new restrictions on viewing, sharing and making money on them. A note detailing the changes will go to producers of the affected videos on Thursday, according to a spokeswoman for the Alphabet Inc. company.

Videos tagged by its new policy won’t be able to run ads or have comments posted, and won’t appear in any recommended lists on the video site. A warning screen will also appear before the videos, which will not be able to play when embedded on external websites. YouTube will let video creators contest the restrictions through an appeals process, a spokeswoman said.

“YouTube doesn’t allow hate speech or content that promotes or incites violence,” the Thursday letter to YouTube creators reads, according to a copy viewed by Bloomberg News. “In some cases, flagged videos that do not clearly breach the Community Guidelines but whose content is potentially controversial or offensive may remain up, but with some features disabled.”

With the ability to comment, share, or even upvote a video, the audience for the remaining clips should plummet.

  • Ninja0980

    Took them long enough.

  • DevineBovine

This is not good. The solution to extremism is education, not censorship.

    • Adam King

Depends entirely on how it’s implemented.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

There are restrictions on booze and tobacco advertising , products that kill people. Why not hate?

      • MusicBear88

This isn’t censoring the videos, it’s making them harder to find. Somebody who’s already a dedicated white supremacist will not be deterred, but maybe some impressionable high school student will.

    • canoebum

Go right ahead and open your own multi-billion dollar enterprise seen all across the world, then you can allow anyone to any hateful crap they like. Nothing’s stopping you. The owners of You Tube have every right to decide what appears on their site and what doesn’t. they are perfectly free to set their own standards. It’s not censorship. You Tube is not the government.

      • DevineBovine

The concept of censorship has nothing to do with public or private ownership, nor did I suggest it. I think my point is clear. Besides, the more people that see this garbage, the better. It’s called exposing.

        • canoebum

I’m going to have to disagree with you on that point. No, the fewer people who see such garbage the better we all are as a society. One Nazi era was quite enough, thank you.

          • DevineBovine

So you’re suggesting we just hide it away and let it fester. The outpouring of public opposition is due, in large part, to people witnessing this filth via YouTube and other media outlets.

            “Sunlight is the best disinfectant”

            — SWIM

          • canoebum

No. I am not suggesting that. I am suggesting that we make it subject to widespread disapproval and renunciation. I am suggesting that we put on the same level as child porn, something so shameful that decent people act to stamp it out at every appearance. I am suggesting that all organizations and the general public make it common knowledge that such expressions will not be tolerated on any forum. You are suggesting the opposite, that it be allowed to be cultivated on social media. I think that is a bad idea, dangerous to the individuals who can be unduly influenced by such filth and dangerous to our society.

          • DevineBovine

Thanks for sharing your views, but I respectfully disagree. I don’t believe it will achieve the desired result, while at the same time setting a precedent for further subjective control of the internet. However, most of what you suggest can (and is) being done without the need to stifle information sharing.

          • canoebum

Society and governments have no reluctance, with the ascent of the public, in stifling child porn. The same could apply to Neo-nazis, the KKK and white supremacists and no one’s freedom of speech would unduly suffer. We talk all kinds of shit here on this forum everyday, nobody objects. We could live without Nazi videos on You Tube. Anyway, I understand where you’re coming from, but we’re going to disagree on this. I have no fear of a “slippery slope” from banning Nazis from the internet entirely.

  • Jonathan Smith

that’s fine for Natzi’s, i guess, but what if you post a pro-gay vid, will THAT violate the “terms of service”?

It is a weird set up. They’re going out of the way to say the videos don’t meet their community standards, but they’re keeping them up anyway.

“In 2002, Duke pleaded guilty to defrauding supporters by claiming to be in dire financial straits, and asking them for money to help him pay for basic necessities. At the time, Duke was financially secure, and used his supporters’ money for recreational gambling.[6]”

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Duke

They don’t mention it in the wikipedia post but apparently part of what he spent his ill gotten $$ on was various cosmetic surgery procedures, which some articles you can find online, talk about the fact that the procedures appear to be ongoing. His appearance changes regularly.

One of his opponents anti-duke campaign signs referred to him as, “The nose-job Nazi.”

It seemed like a nice community about nine or so years ago. I remember a lot of great channels run by intelligent, witty people. I liked several of the pro-science anti-religion channels and boy, did they mock the witless wonders that made up the creationist community on YouTube. Seeing that place overrun with Nazis is just sad.

      • Octoberfurst

The problem is that there are many atheists on Youtube who are complaining that the higher-ups are refusing to let ads go on atheist channels because some people consider it “hate speech”. I find that troubling.

        • B Snow

That will be the result of this new policy — right wingers reporting every left-leaning channel as hate speech. Then YouTube will have to hire people to wade through all the reports.

There is nothing that bigots hate worse than not being able to comment.

    • ZhyKitty

Truth! My local news website had to eventually do away with all commenting because of the vile rightwingers’ racist and classist comments in the comment section.
When I say it was bad, I mean that even someone as rancid as David Duke would likely blush if caught making some of those statements in public.
They really really hated people of color, and for some inexplicable reason, the poor, even though most of them probably were poor themselves.
      I’ll never understand that.

      • johncAtl

Same in Atlanta on the AJC website.

      • Carl

Most comment sections are unmoderated sewers. People casually say things that would get you fired from a Wendy’s.

      • safari

Even large news sites are doing away with commenting. I find it better to comment on aggregation sites like JMG anyway. The people on it tend to enforce site norms, troll outliers tend to be recognized and pointed out, and we can still have civil conversation.

    • djcoastermark

Or getting called out on their hate speech. Man does that set off their rage meter.

  • Cuberly

At least once or twice a week I watch a few hours of youtube vids on a plethora of subjects. You’d be shocked at what you can learn or be entertained by. Heck when I was looking for watercolor techniques sure enough I found a whole bunch of vids that were quite informative. The sky’s the limit.

But yeah, as almost everyone here has noted, there’s a dark side to youtube that is truly horrifying. Their commenting system alone is basically a massive trolling incubator, it exponentially breeds some vile nasty shit.

It’s great google is doing this, but wow, did they wait long enough?

    • Karl Dubhe

There’s not a dark side to quantum physics.

      Oh, wait.

      • Cuberly

        Ha!

    • prixator

I got hooked on YouTube when it first came online in 2005. I primarily used it to find videos for songs that I loved in the past.

But, a few years ago, I suffered some hearing loss which makes it difficult for me to discern speech very clearly. I was thankful when captioning was introduced but, initially, it was often hilariously useless (the one mistranslation I still remember was “Matt Bomer” rendered as “mad bomber”).

I can tell that they have put a lot of work in to improve it. However, very few music videos are captioned but I can still enjoy the melody.

  • Carl

About freaking time. Tired of being told I’m expected to have civil discussions with nut jobs about why some people don’t deserve life.

Sooner or later, the issue of censorship on the internet is going to appear before the US Supreme Court. An argument could be made that some very popular websites, like YouTube and Twitter, have become public commons, even though they are owned by private companies. If this argument is accepted, then censorship of unpopular political speech on such websites would violate the 1st Amendment of the Bill of Rights.

    • -M-

There needs to be a distinction between unpopular people or opinions and hate speech. Granted there’s not a precise easy to pin down boundary.

I’m conflicted about this. A few large companies have become the gatekeepers of information and social interaction. Google is the keeper of knowledge, Facebook is the keeper of social life, YouTube is the keeper of home-movies and snippets of life.
These companies now get to say whose speech is worthy, or not worthy. Today the bad flavour is Nazis. Okay we can all agree to hate them. And next week who should we all agree to hate? Transgendered people?
Yes, I *know* they’re a private company and can set their own rules of conduct. And if there was the option to go to another provider that would be fine. But they are monopoly holders. There is no other option.
What happens when christianists take over managerial control of google? Dont say it cant happen – I’m certain they’re working on it right now.

    • safari

It’s why net neutrality is a good thing: the pipes are made for everyone. Competitors can appear, though they will have a hard time fighting their way into the market place.

    • zhera

Thing is, the bigots can go make their own platforms for information, social life, etc. They already have tried this with ReaganBook and Hatereon.

They won’t ever get as big as Google and Facebook because there’s not enough market for them. And there never will be as long as the internet is free and neutral.

The day net neutrality dies, well…

      • NZArtist

That’s my point… when it happens to our particular minority, where do we go?
Just because we’re *currently* acceptable to the overlords of information doesn’t mean we will *always* be acceptable.
I dont have a solution, I was just expressing my unease at any giant monopoly being the gatekeepers of the morality of the day.

        • safari

It’s a good thing to bring up.

        • zhera

I can agree with the unease. I just think that as long as there’s net neutrality there will always be more sane people than bigots and nazis. So a huge change will have to happen for things to turn in their favor.

Of course, huge changes can happen any time. 🙁

    • Dramphooey

I don’t think reactionaries have the ability to run something like Google. If they took it over they’d wreck it and something would appear to replace it. Narrow minds aren’t creative. Where do reactionaries thrive? Selling fried chicken and paste!

      • NZArtist

… or run the government, or a major political party, or major corporations (Hobby Lobby, Exxon…)
They do. And as a minority (which the owners of the social dialog have made into an unpopular minority) simply cant go and create a competitor. It just doesn’t work against a monopoly. People will use google becuase google is used by more people. Facebook is crap, but people use it because other people are using it.
Oh, sure, it might happen over a few decades that another service can be built up. Odds are against it. Monopolies win because they’re monopolies. They get to set the rules of the playing field. If someone starts gaining on them they get government to change the rules, or they buy out and close out the smaller players.
        So… you know… uneasy.

  • Blake J Butler

I survived a full week of internship. (two days, but two days in a treatment center for chronically mentally ill clients).

I am going through the motions because i have heard hilarious stories, sad, and cruel stories from clients. It is exhausting and after a week of this and school i deserve a drink.

It’s one of the moments that you’re thankful for being raised in a dysfunctional family, has no idea of what the word normal means, and watching extensively the therapy sessions with Dr. Melfi from the Sopranos.

Oh and i had a college outreach booth set up in 100 degree heat and extreme humidity on Monday afternoon from 9 to 1.

    I’ve been busy.

  • TheManicMechanic

Well, I don’t allow ads to run on any YouTube videos anyway. 😉

This should have been in place soon after the service began. They don’t have to censor the videos, but they should not be easily shared, linked, or especially allow for ads. I’ve been flagging as many videos I can find that show hate speech, violence and the potential for. Use the momentum we have now to get these people shut down. Take the fight to Facebook, Vimeo and all the other sites showing these videos. Companies are more on the lookout for their own asses at this point and will be more willing to remove this shit now than ever before. Momentum!
