Excerpt From Hillary’s Book: Trump’s Creepy Stalking During The Debate Made My Skin Crawl [VIDEO]

Politico reports:

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said her “skin crawled” during last year’s second presidential debate, a reaction to Donald Trump standing ominously near her as she delivered answers before a national audience.

“This is not OK, I thought. It was the second presidential debate and Donald Trump was looming behind me. Two days before, the world heard him brag about groping women. Now we were on a small stage and no matter where I walked, he followed me closely, staring at me, making faces,” Clinton wrote in her book “What Happened,” an excerpt of which was broadcast Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“It was incredibly uncomfortable,” she wrote. “He was literally breathing down my neck. My skin crawled. It was one of those moments where you wish you could hit pause and ask everyone watching, well, what would you do? Do you stay calm, keep smiling and carry on as if he weren’t repeatedly invading your space? Or do you turn, look him in the eye and say loudly and clearly, ‘back up you creep, get away from me. I know you love to intimidate women but you can’t intimidate me, so back up.’”

  • netxtown

A quick pivot – then a quicker knee to his nuts would have sufficed.

    • ChrisInKansas

Well, the area, anyway. I’m sure they’ve shriveled to nothing by now.

      • netxtown

Either way – he would have been bent over in pain – while rest of the world was bent over laughing their asses off.

  • olandp

“Or do you turn, look him in the eye and say loudly and clearly, ‘back up
you creep, get away from me. I know you love to intimidate women but
you can’t intimidate me, so back up.’”

I wish she had said that.

    • Skokieguy [Larry]

Yup. Might have seriously changed the dynamics.

      • Reality.Bites

You mean she might have lost by 3 million votes rather than won by 3 million?

      • robindaybird

Trust me as a woman – the men would cry that she’s being hysterical and fussing over nothing. She knows doing it will do her no favors.

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

trump was working her that way cause he knew she had no recourse. And clinton knew the double standard too.

          • robindaybird

real talk: When I was 19 and left a chinese buffet, my step-grandfather snapped my bra, my grandmother and my parents told me I was overreacting.

    • Rambie

I wish she did too, but you just know how the FAUX NEWS and CNN (who at the time loved Trump) would have positioned this as Clinton being unhinged.

      • Jeffrey

Yeah, it would be terrible to end up with an unhinged president. Thank gawd that didn’t happen lol

        • Rambie

I think you need to direct your anger at someone else.

          • Jeffrey

Who do you think Im directing anger at?

          • Rambie

oops, I was replying to a bunch of posts in many forums and that was misdirected. 🙂

        • ccc

Just imagine if she had actually said that. How would the spectacle come off? Would people say that she was screeching at a man? Couldn’t she just rely on the visual of Donald Trump being a creep and pacing around unhinged?

Pretty much. “How dare this woman have personal boundaries!”

        • Rambie

Exactly! It wouldn’t have changed the minds of the Stein-bots or the Bernie Bros and it would give more ammo to the Anti-Hillary types. I still wish she’d done it even if it didn’t change the outcome of the election.

      • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

You mean so that it makes her look weak and scared? Yeah, they did that anyway.

        • Rambie

Yes, it’d have given them more ammo to attack her.

    • Gerry Fisher

Excellent administrator/manager; not a good campaigner. She is/was just so *cautious* and measured, often not in a good way, but in a way that gave off “fake” vibes.

      • FAEN

I didn’t get that from her as far as her vibe but I did think she didn’t go out of her way to rock the boat. If ALL the polls said I was going to win I wouldn’t have either.

      • B Snow

A few days after the election, there were photos of her in regular clothes, with glasses on. If she’d campaigned like that, she might have won. She just seemed so much more “real” than during the campaign. 🙁

        • B Snow

I recently figured out why the right doesn’t care about hypocrisy. It’s because they think double-standards are okay. They believe that the rules not only apply differently to different people, they SHOULD apply differently to different people.

      • penpal

…and then you win the election anyway because your opponent is that bad.

        • Goodboy

No you win because the election was rigged.

          • penpal

            LOL.

          • lymis

And because the FBI director intentionally raised doubts about potential criminal issues – knowing full well that they weren’t true – during the early voting period, while also knowing that the other candidate was under investigation for a wide variety of actual crimes and saying nothing.

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

can you send me a tweet of Bernie Sanders condemming charlottesville? I know he sent one. didnt he?

        • John Kusters

The voter suppression effort in the states where Trump won a razor thin majority and got the necessary EC votes was very successful. Often, the number of people who were prevented from voting, solidly Democratic voters, was many multiples of the margin he won by. If there had been no voter suppression in Wisconsin, Michigan, and elsewhere, we would be talking about President Clinton.

    • penpal

I wish she had done and said a lot of things in those debates. She was weak tea and he dragged her through the mud relentlessly. She was / is a terrible candidate and utterly terrified of Republicans and Republican backlash.

  • Karl Dubhe

If she had told him to back off, she’d have won every fucking state.

    • Lizard

I have a feeling she’d have lost a lot of voters, even if she gained others. Men with egos too delicate to handle a male candidate being called out for his shit by a female candidate and women who still think all women should have to put up with this shit from men in the workplace. Sad but true.

      • Karl Dubhe

Men, yes. I would have hoped that fewer women would have voted for Trump after she had stood up for herself tho…

        • Lizard

There’s a demographic of women who think women shouldn’t stand up for themselves, even against predatory men like Drumpf. I call them the “boys will be boys” women–those who excuse men’s bad behavior as somehow inherent or out of their control.

Ironically, they also have a tendency to be the kind of anti-feminists who claim that feminists are the ones with a low opinion of men.

          • Karl Dubhe

It’s getting harder not to despair for humanity.

Maybe the crazies were right to send an arsonist in to burn everything down.

          • Lizard

Still…almost three million votes more for Hillary.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think that sadly a lot of women are like Mrs. Duggar who let her son prey on her own damn daughters because she let herself be brainwashed into thinking boys matter more and her daughters made excuses for Josh even if they deep down resent being shat on for his sake.

    • Frank McCormick

It would be nice to thinks so. But, realistically, she would have been deemed the screeching harpy (again!) in the media. And, let’s face it, who’s mind would have been changed? The Trumpsters who STILL feel he can do no wrong?

      • ohbear1957

I’m skeptical that 30 seconds of action on her part in 2016 would have erased 30 years of character assassination by the Republicans.

      • Karl Dubhe

Perhaps, I really think his reaction to her calmly saying that she demands he respect her space would have offset that.

If it was reported by the media, which wanted Trump more than they wanted good government.

        • Lizard

You think so? This is the guy who actually made fun of a disabled man during a campaign speech by pretending to shake like he was having a seizure. And people cheered.

          • Karl Dubhe

            His supporters are beyond redemption.

I’d like to think that more people would have fcuking well voted, rather than sitting on their lazy goddamn asses. Thinking everything was going to be ‘fine’…

          • Lizard

A mindset perpetuated by a media who ran his speeches practically uninterrupted for ratings and not hers (because he’s a clown and she’s an actual fucking politician with political speeches that would be “too boring,” giving the erroneous perception that he campaigned more than she did or had clearer policy positions) and polls predicting her 99.9% win. Not excusing people who didn’t vote, but…it didn’t help.

        • Uncle Mark

Trump is a lifelong bully. His kind know how to play this game…especially in public. This may have very well been planned for…resulting in his shrugging his shoulders at her words and asking “If she’s so easily intimidated by my walking behind her, how do you think she would handle seriously aggressive & intimidating world leaders?” Whenever they’re called out, bullies like him are used to implying that their behavior only exists in women’s heads.

    • CanuckDon

It’s a moment that might have turned everything around. Unfortunately, the immense tension and suspicion that the corrupt GOP built up around her made every move she made a delicate one…and Hillary knew that.

  • DaveMiller135

You and me both, Ms. Clinton. And I, for one, would have paid hard cash money to have you pause and tell Trump to back it up. Still, you looked like a woman who could continue to make her point in the presence of a man who was trying to intimidate her, so I think it worked out. Except for the whole Electoral College business. Speaking of ancient monuments we really ought to consider dismantling.

  • Rex

He makes my skin crawl every time I see him. I can even watch a seconds long clip with out getting creeped out.

    • Uncle Mark

He doesn’t make my skin crawl. He enrages me…his arrogance coupled with his ignorance, his incessant lying, selfishness, and bullying and childish, spoiled tantrums. I want to beat the crap out of him everytime I see him…everytime I hear him…everytime I read his statements or tweets.

    • Gregory B

I could not agree more. Trump gives me the dry heaves.

  • Lizard

That’s all he’s good* for–campaigning and intimidating intelligent, qualified women. Scumbag.

    *Bad?

  • worstcultever

Let’s face it – had she confronted him, the media narrative would have been that she’s both an angry bitch and a snowflake.

    • Lizard

That was their narrative anyway. A confrontation would have made it a hundred times worse.

    • Treant

Since she didn’t, the weak woman narrative prevailed instead.

My philosophy is that, if you’re damned if you do it and damned if you don’t, you should do it if you’ll enjoy the experience. At least you got some fun out of it.

      • Uncle Mark

As much as I would have loved to see Hillary tell the creep to back off, the news would have focused on that part of the debate, as “Hillary being unhinged or easily intimidated.” As it was…most of the legitimate media focused on how creepy Twitler was…and what an obviously failed attempt at intimidation it was. I remember a lot of discussions from folks around me that looked at it that way too

        • j.martindale

She got good press. You are correct. She wasn’t rattled. He looked creepy. She came off okay.

          • Uncle Mark

I’m reminded of one of the debates between George W Bush & Al Gore. While Bush was speaking, Gore walked out of his designated area, right up to W. It was an obvious attempt at intimidation and to fluster W. W’s positive reaction to that (momentary look of confusion with a smile and an acknowledgement gesture) was the talk of the debate later.

Clearly, the public and the press recognize intimidation tactics and shun them…without the additional requirement by the victim to call them out. In fact, it seems that those, who weather this, without comment or complaint, come out on top with grace.

          • ColdCountry

I thought she did an awesome job. To keep your cool in a situation like that is not easy, and I’m sure she got points from a lot of women for it. Had she reacted, he would have put up his hands, looked innocent, and said, “I’m not doing anything,” and aside, “Boy, is she touchy. So easily rattled. Weak.” Just the way all bullies do!

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

He looked creepy and he STILL looks creepy.

And clinton ,no matter her flaws, STILL is perceived, rightly so, as calm and collected.

        • Guest

Then maybe she should have stood up next to him him physically in the same way when it was his next turn to sniffle out a bullshit answer to his questions….I dunno, I think calling his behaviour out for what it was would have earned her a little more respect from women. Who knows?

      • JCF

Damned if you do/damned if you don’t: Behold the Misogyny! DoubleXX people face this every friggin’ day…

    • fahvel

      bullshit

    • Gerry Fisher

I don’t think that she should have confronted him. I think she should have continued to look to the audience, put into words what Trump was doing, and calmly and firmly make the argument that it’s evidence that he’s not a leader but someone who manipulates through fear and intimidation.

    • ETownCanuck

Maybe she should have done it humorously, such as asking him if he had to stop the debate in order to use the restroom as he was pacing so much. “You’re doing the peepee dance Donny, you need to go potty?”

      • RoFaWh

He’d have reached the orbit of Neptune by now.

    • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

      That’s what they did anyway.

    • Nowhereman

They would call her “shrill”. Men who are assertive are “bold and decisive”. Women who are assertive are “shrill and hysterical”.

    • CottonBlimp

But, you know, if she’d just decked him – just literally punched the fucker onto the floor – she probably would have won in a landslide. Not even joking.

That’s the playground mentality our voters have regressed to.

      • robindaybird

Nah, men would get butthurt over women daring to hit a man.

Only way they’d approve is if it was Melania and they had a catfight.

  • Joe in PA

I think she could have confronted him, but not in the way she described (which is, of course, the way I would have wanted, maybe even with a knee to the groin).

If she could have gotten her point across with humor, just to show that she isn’t rattled by this infantile jerk.

I remember the debate, but it wasn’t until it was over that I realized what was going on…okok, I’m not that sharp. But still, all through it I felt creeped-out.

    • Treant

“I know I’m hot, honey, but give a lady some room to breathe!”

      • Joe in PA

Perfect. 🙂 BTW and O/T…did you get a bunch of rain last night in Allentown? A 20% chance of less than 1/2″ produced 2.5″ in less than an hour! Yikes, what is going on?

        • Treant

The worst of the storms spun your way, apparently. 🙂 0.26″ official on my back deck around sunrise (it’s digital, so it doesn’t evaporate out of a tube or anything).

Which still gives us more than 8.5″ in the last 30 days on my back deck, almost triple normal for August.

As the global climate changes, we’re projected for very dry years during El Nino, wet years during La Nina, and soaking wet, temperate rainforest conditions the rest of the time.

Yeah, but global climate change does not exist. /s

    • Gerry Fisher

      >If she could have gotten her point across with humor, just to show that she isn’t rattled by this infantile jerk.

Yes! Especially since she wasn’t rattled. She kept a cool head.

    • ColdCountry

That behavior set off alarm bells for every woman I know. It had me shoving myself back in my chair just to get farther away, and I had no idea what she was saying, I was so distracted. She has nerves of steel.

    • ColdCountry

Oh, and the knee to the groin? Backstage, after. I like Treant’s suggestion, however.

    • RoFaWh

If she could have made the audience start laughing at the crazy old fascist (not yet President Liar), he might have totally lost his cool. He does not like being mocked.

  • CanuckDon

I wonder if Morning Joe will read the passage in Clinton’s book that talks about how, if this was a year ago, Morning Joe wouldn’t be bothered to talk about Clinton’s book.

  • fahvel

yes Hillary, you turn around and look him in the eye and say just that!!.. Why you didn’t, no one knows but you but if you had, you would be the president of the usa today.

  • justme

    Oh moderator..
The 5 year old needs a time out in his corner…

  • Gerry Fisher

Hillary, dear, you actually could have called him out right in the moment, and could have calmly and firmly connected it to “intimidation/scare tactics versus real leadership.”

  • Jack

The latter. But not too loud.

  • Jerry Kott

      • Texndoc

“Stayed home” would have been better than collapsing and being thrown in a SUV like a sack, with security running to hide it. It was the beginning of the U-turn that resulted in President Trump.

        • robindaybird

Fuck you, if she stayed home, she would’ve been crucified for not caring about 9/11 and being weak and frail. The deck was stacked against her.

          • Texndoc

You sound like you worked on the campaign. Note that she was ill for the day and the consequences would have been preferable to collapsing in public and being thrown into a SUV like a corpse. She was a Senator from NY. Yeah people would have said she didn’t care about 9/11

          • robindaybird

No I am speaking. Remember when mommy had the flu and she still had to clean, cook and care for the kids, while daddy can lay on the couch all day from some sniffles?

Women are never given the luxury of taking time off for being sick, they’re expected to power through. They’re not allowed to be sick, so they have to keep going until they collapse.

and yes, if she wasn’t there, they’d be blasting “Where is clinton? Why isn’t she honoring our dead? She’s home sick, how is she fit to be president?”

          • Texndoc

It’s a campaign autopsy. The fact IS her collapsing in public was worse for her than not appearing at all and saying she was ill. If the book is honest she’d write she should have never attended.

          • robindaybird

No. She was fucked no matter how she handled it.

If Trump collapsed, the Republicans would rally about how hard he was working and campaigning. If he stayed home, he’d be considered ‘focused’.

Women are never given the luxury of being sick. Never.

No, we’re just tired of idiots like you acting like you’re somehow more enlightened than the rest of us. We get it. You think you’re “different” and see more than the rest of us. That we’re all blind. What it makes you look like is a sad, pathetic desperate person, willing to believe in whatever made up thing that fits your worldview.

          • That’s on you. I never said I’m better than anyone or more enlightened – just offer a different point of view that most of what I see in here. I could say the same about you trying to fit everything into your world view. Except your world view if failing so maybe try to start thinking about this a little differently. That’s all.

Just like the deluded conspiracy theorists.

        • RoFaWh

“Another opinion” that differs from the plain truth is worth less nothing.

    • The_Wretched

There’s a lot of blame to go around. Reductionism to single factors is stupid.

      • Sure there’s a lot of blame to go around but when will she take some responsibility for her poor decisions that put us all at risk?

        • The_Wretched

Of course not. Few in her position would. The problem is problem, however. And that’s Trump, his ilk and the system that allowed him to get to that high office.

          • The system that allowed him to get into office includes Democrats and their bad offense. They are not a very good opposition party and until we start calling them out, criticizing them, and pushing them to get their shit together, the Republicans will continue to keep winning.

          • Schlukitz

You’re not gonna get a lot of sympathy around these here parts. If you are going to shill for the Republican Party, this would be the place to do it.

Ding, ding, dong. Ding, ding, dong

    Creepy Donald, Creepy Donald…

White people didn’t care. Messicans were coming for their jobs.

I remember watching that. It was as obvious as stinky dog shit on a shoe that he was trying to intimidate that mere woman.

  • Natty Enquirer

Wish she’d told him off on live TV.

  • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

You turn around, make eye contact, and hold it until he backs off. You don’t have to say anything. It weirds people out when you do that.

    • coram nobis

Might have worked. And it’s good to know she was aware of him but was trying to make the best of it. “Back up, you creep” probably wouldn’t have worked but a silent stare might have.

  • JWC

That is Trumps forte, in business and life to intimidate, bully and threaten Understanding no one is his equal; women, colored gay muslims. Everyone is to demean and be beaten down . To be beholding to the Great Donny for their mere exsistance. To be loyal to Donny. Consider even his kids as Prime example. It all stems from his fragile and shattered ego

    • RoFaWh

What on earth did his parents do to him to make him the way he is?

  • boobert

It was the creepiest point in the election . He is truly a horrible person.

    • coram nobis

It was creepy indeed. And there wasn’t a thing she could do. If she stopped, faced him and said “Donald, just what do you think you’re doing?” there would have been a flood of commentators next day saying she was oversensitive, domineering, frigid or just hostile to men.

      • marshlc

Yeah, I don’t think everyone who is saying “If she’d have done that she would have won” have any idea what life is like for women.
        This isn’t the movies.

  • lymis

I keep having to remind people that if Hillary had won, no matter what else would or wouldn’t be true, nobody would have gone through the last six months with Trump to have our current reality to compare it to.

She would have faced one of the most obstructionist Congresses in history – McConnell had already said he was considering holding off an the Supreme Court nominee for an entire additional term, for example, and endless ongoing bullshit investigations into things like Benghazi and the email server.

    • Stephen Elliot Phillips

BUT, the dam would hold for another 4 years. Now we are flooded.
The republicans (and russians) got our queen in the chess game.

    • -M-

Donald’s batshittery was predictable enough, the part that’s hard to believe is what he’s been allowed to get away with so far.

  • RealityBass

    But her emails….

    • Stephen Elliot Phillips

      emails=vagina

  • coram nobis

I watched that debate, and at that moment I was wondering if he was going to grope her. That, along with the pussy-grab tape, should have ended it right there. It suggests that the Trump voters were voting for that, too.

  • JCF

    Same gurl, same.
