Ex-UK Ambassador To US: This Is Like Nazi Germany

The Hill reports:

Former British ambassador to the U.S. Peter Westmacott compared President Trump to an autocrat in Nazi Germany after the president’s campaign-style rally in Phoenix, Arizona. The tweet on Wednesday morning came in response to a report from NBC’s Andrea Mitchell that former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is “scared and worried about the President’s fitness to serve” after his remarks in Phoenix.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

This has been true since the start of Trump’s campaign.

  • TrueWords

Alarming parallels of history compared to Third Reich.

The President creates his own media.

The President exploits youth at a rally.

    The President endorses police brutality.

The President demonizes people who believe, look or love differently.

The President strips vulnerable people of their families, jobs and ability to live.

The President believes Congress should change its rules to give him more power

    • edrex

my only quibble is point one. i think it’s backwards. “fox” and “breitbart” created trump.

      • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

It began with Survivor. The monkey masses thought fame was something to aspire to. Then they were encouraged to believe their own opinions and votes counted enough to make them famous, too. All without ever examining how they were being fleeced.

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

reality tv and propaganda news both created this climate

      • prixator

Maybe he’s referring to “Trump TV”?

    • Skokieguy [Larry]
      • Todd20036

you know, minus the starvation, the guy standing is rather cute.
        Had to be said

        • WitlessProtection

I’m glad I’m not the only one that thought that.

          • MichaelJ

I’m sure not the only one to think that, but I don’t think it needed to be said.

          • Jonathan Smith

            no. really. it did not.

        • TK

Sick – even on this site.

          • I wonder how he was killed and buried. I know that his family, if alive, remember that cute face.

      • Derrick Johns

The starving man wanted the world to see (eventually) what the Nazis were doing: slow slavery and murder.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

The photo has created discussion as to the standing man’s placement, which some see as being added into the shot.

Having noted, it should be noted the Elie Weisel is included in this shot.

    • I know that Ivanka and Jared are money loving and self loving individuals. Did they have any idea of the type of man Trump really is? By that, I mean they knew he was ruthless in business, but Ivanka converted to Judaism – something that I am sure horrified her father. Now, Jews are fair game for insults/persecution along with LGBTI and all minorities. Besides, even if the Trump children are without morals (which they seem to be) the fact that they and their kids could be nuked must be a constant nightmare.

      • David Walker

I wonder, though, if they give it a second thought. Daddy has, after all, always taken care of them before, why not from a nuclear holocaust?

  • Jonathan Smith
    • kaydenpat

That’s my “It’s only been 7 months!” face.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

It’s Wednesday ?? OMG today is garbage day!!
      BRB …….

      • Jon Doh

Since November 9th, every day is “garbage day”.

        • Robincho

Two VERY fucked up days: 9/11 and 11/9. Interesting…

      • geoffalnutt

With Trump in office every day is garbage day.

      • It’s been National Garbage Day since he was elected.

    • Derrick Johns

Yes, indeed. LOL Ha, Ha, ha,

    • Derrick Johns

I wish I could look like that kitty cat sometimes…on any day of the week.. Just leave me alone I don’t want a man. No! Not even Dak Prescott.

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

Blame Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell for going along with it.

    • kaydenpat

Mitch appears to be catching hell for not pleasing Dear Leader enough.

      • netxtown

he does – but fat sheep can’t run …. or hide

        • Todd20036

No, but they’re delicious, served with garlic powder, and mashed potatoes and broccoli, maybe a nice vegetable puree soup to start with….

      • charemor

It couldn’t happen to a more deserving turtle, I mean turdel.

    • David L. Caster

And 60+ million Americans that voted for Trump along with many more that couldn’t be bothered to vote.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

Maybe they really are the ” best people ??
        Ha Ha Ha Haaaaaaaaa

        • Please don’t tell me he passed on his genetics!!!!

        • Joe in PA

          He’s 46? Yikes.

        • Uncle Mark

YIKES !!! Who let that thing out of the lab ?!! He looks like a biohazard weapon gone horribly horribly wrong/republican

      • Todd20036

And Bernie and Jill for equating Clinton’s trumped up scandals to Trump’s real ones.
        Pun definitely intended.

      • The_Wretched

that map points out perfectly why we need automated voter registrations (like motor voter but broader), voting day to be on a weekend instead of Tuesday (or a national holiday on voting day), early voting periods, hand counted paper ballots, mail in voting, national law that all voters must be within x distance of a polling station, polling station wait time limits to 1 hour etc.

EDIT: or we could just blame a fraction of the left for having political views…. you decide.

        • David L. Caster

All the things in your first paragraph. And, perhaps more.

      • Librarykid

and the rethugs in congress, too greedy for power and blind to bigotry to question their leader’s madness.

    • Ninja0980

Yup, they wanted that SCOTUS seat at any cost, even this.

  • David L. Caster

    We know.

    • Robincho

Its resting face is a bulb of exceedingly low wattage…

    • Stogiebear

I was thinking more along the lines of “The Idiot Cousin” but “The Apprentice” works too.

    • Derrick Johns

      So true,IAMBOLINGGREEN. So true.

  • Natty Enquirer

He’s scared and worried now? Where was Clapper for the past year?

    • David L. Caster

He’s been pretty vocal for months.

      • Natty Enquirer

Okay, I am reacting to the wording “after [Trump’s] remarks.”

    • kaydenpat

He has consistently spoken out against Trump.

  • kaydenpat

We’re all scared. Thank goodness for the Resistance and Mueller’s investigation. There has to be a light at the end of this long, dark tunnel.

    • Skokieguy [Larry]

I think a McConnell surrogate saying out loud that if Trump doesn’t stop coming after Republican critics, he will be impeached, is a good sign.

And we know that Trump will not be able to stop attacking critics.

It would be nice if they would have already started impeachment based on his multiple violations of laws, but of course its only when their own careers might be hurt that finally might trigger action. Re-election is more important than protecting our constitution & country.

  • Michael R

Posting a GIF of our river time yesterday for anyone who missed it last night ,
because I’m tired of bad news all day every day , just learned to make movie gifs !
( look for the dragonfly photobomb )

    • JCF

      So.Much. Awwwwww!

  • Cuberly

We know and we’re just as impatient to get the fucker out of office.

  • Rex

We are all well aware of the danger that is Trump.
It’s the GOP that needs to realize the imminent danger that he’s become – their response will show if they are just as much a danger to the county as Trump.

    • kaydenpat

They need to put politics aside and do the right thing.

      • 2guysnamedjoe

Remember, we’re talking about the turtle and the zombie-eyed granny starver here, so I doubt that will happen.

    • David L. Caster

      They are, perhaps more so.

    • Jonathan Smith

      “if” ?

  • Texndoc

And Trump supporters would say “Europe is lost” because of mass migration and they’re reaping what they sowed and Shut Up it’s not happening here. USA! USA! USA!

  • Jerry Kott

T45 would brag that he destroyed the United States.

    • Dave B

Well, hid did say this in 2014 to fox “news”.

“You know what solves it? When the economy crashes, when the country goes to total hell, and everything is a disaster, then you’ll have riots to go back to where we used to be, when we were great.”

      • Karl Dubhe

What would actually happen was the subject of this old guardian article.

Once gone, civilizations don’t get rebuilt the way the earlier elites would have liked.

        • kareemachan

Good, if depressing article. I wish bannon would realize this.

ETA: I was going to add that drumpster should read this, but realized it was 1) too long, and 2) too many multisyllabic words, and 3) his inability to focus and concentrate would kick in and he’s wander off in search of ice cream.

      • 2guysnamedjoe

He’d like that. He could pick up lots of real estate real cheap.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok
    • Treant

Even my mom watched HBB occasionally as she enjoyed the train wreck.

Hey, she stopped when she realized everybody was laughing at them, not with them, and that the family honestly didn’t get that.

    • kareemachan

Let me guess: Keith Stankley is overweight and unemployed?

Ye gods, I just clicked on the link and now my appetite is gone.

  • Cuberly

How can there not be at least one member of the Trump family that thinks daddy don has snapped his cap? I just don’t get it.

    • Sam_Handwich

he’s a bully. they’re all afraid of him. Jim Jones kinda thing.

      • Cuberly

(sigh) I guess that coupled with a serious addiction to foreign investors money.

      • Lizard

I bet there was a conversation along the lines of “If I’m going down, you’re all going down with me.”

    • Lizard

I mentioned this here yesterday, but I bet Tiffany is staying the hell away from him publicly for a reason.

      • Cuberly

Well she still benefits from the flood of $$$$. I guess that wins out over a sense of responsibility.

        • kareemachan

Does she? I’ve never heard she does.

      • The_Wretched

Knowing Trump, he got her to sign a NDA at some point.

      • William

Tiffany has been trapped in a revolving door since December.

    • geoffalnutt

They want money. That’s all it’s ever about. Don’t forget: It’s a crime family.

    • Dave B

Remember?……Don’t pay attention to what he says, but what he does” “What’s in his heart”

    • 2guysnamedjoe

They need him in the OO. When he gets shit-canned, so do they.

    • Bluto

Because tiffany needs the US Treasury to pay for her $100,000 Italian vacation chauffeur tab.

    • Jonathan Smith

what? and get cut out of the will?
      don’t be silly

    • Max_1

They’re far too busy taking million dollar taxpayer paid European trips.

    • charemor

      They don’t think.

  • The_Wretched

    by a tweet?!

  • Derrick Johns

Yes, Ambassador Westmacott is correct.. I watched Trump last nigh (don’t ask me why). It is Nazi tactics Trump is using.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

OT: Just reading how Dumpf is threatening a government shutdown to force congress to pony up for his useless wall. I thought Mexico was going to pay for it??

    • Sam_Handwich

the debt ceiling battle will be a real shitshow

Dems are in a much better position to get something out of it than Trump is…..because Ryan will likely need Nancy’s help

      • Librarykid

Because of the crazies in the rethug conference who, out of ignorance, will refuse to vote to raise the debt limit.

    • Librarykid

      Another lie.

    • Ann Kah

Ah, c’mon. You never really believed that, did you?

  • JustDucky
    • Jonathan Smith

      so. dRump?

    • The_Wretched

Bannon’s play book was not an accident.

    • Bad Tom

In our favor: They are bungling it.
Bungling quickly enough? Remains to be seen.

    • Schlukitz

All of the above goal posts have been firmly put in place.

All that is missing for an assent to power by a dictator is an “Enabling Act” like the one in Hitler’s 1933 Germany.

    • Kruhn

And the irony is that the Holocaust Museum is a mere four blocks from the Drumpfenfuhrerbunker.

  • Jamie Brewer

It is frightening how Americans are so clueless as to the history of the Nazi Germany. I read Victor Klemperer’s secret diaries published as “I Will Bear Witness a History of the Nazi years 1933-1941” years ago. The parallels to the present time have me so emotionally distraught.

    • TheManicMechanic

America: “Oh, that Victor Klemperer, he was sooo good as that bumbling Colonel Klink in Hogan’s Heroes! Nazis were so dumb!”

      • Beagle

More apt than you may think — Victor and Werner were cousins.
I also recommend Victor’s diaries. Harrowing reading, but a very good depiction of what must NEVER happen again.

        • Robincho

Werner (son of the formidable conductor, Otto) agreed to play the Klink role ONLY on the condition that the Nazis come out of every episode looking like retarded dicks…

      • Uncle Mark

My brother-in-law’s father was a 16 year-old lad when the Nazis invaded Poland, and enslaved him in a forced-labor camp. As a father in the US, he banned his kids from watching “Hogan’s Heroes” because it portrayed the Nazis as morons, and therefore implied that the people murdered, enslaved, tortured, and tormented were somehow more idiotic.

        • Derrick Johns

Thank you, Uncle Mark, for this testimonial.

    • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

I read it, too. I was a history minor in college (would have majored in it, but the job prospects then as now were not great). That said, earlier on in this “menage a manure” I would have agreed, but even the most clueless Nazis were far more competent than anyone in the current administration, and likely in all of Washington DC. This is just going to be an embarrassing farce all the way to the end whether by resignation, impeachment, or God forbid, he makes it to 1/20/21.

    • Librarykid

Few public school history classes have time at the end of the term to go deeply into WWII.

      • Jamie Brewer

Trust me I know this all too well. Due to budget cutbacks in the late 1960’s my World History class was taught “on the fly” by a Fine Arts teacher. The first half of the year was spent on the Greek and Roman Empires. We never made into the 20th Century. That was covered by homework reading assignments. In 1968 the US was at war with an active draft. The cause and effect of that conflict was not even taught to my class. These students who would be drafted into the Army and perhaps die or be maimed for life. Some things never change…
Any real knowledge of history came long after formal schooling and acquired on my own.

        • William

My high school World History class was taught by a football coach. Lesson plans had been laid out years before. All tests were multiple choice.

        • Librarykid

Then you were a motivated student with an excellent teacher.

    • Do Something Nice

      Thanks for the recommendation.

  • AdamTh

People need to watch a documentary called “Hitler – A Career”. The parallels between the 1930’s and today are unbelieveable. (It is currently available on NetFlix, possibly other services as well)

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Historians see it…Scholars see it….people who read see it…the entire world sees it…yet, for some reason that still eludes, the vast majority of America does nothing but protest and shout. Sorry, but that just isn’t cutting it anymore, do something or someone else will. We cannot allow a U.S.lead by Trump to become an autocratic hegemony. Been there…done that….not interested in a repeat.

Apologies for the harsh words, please understand this is becoming untenable.

    • Schlukitz

Going back two or three years ago, I was posting comments about the similarity of Hitler’s Germany with what is happening in todays America.

I was absolutely gob-smacked by the sheer number of people who accused me of making “Godwinian” statements and accusing me of being an “alarmist.”

“It could never happen here in America, they said….”

  • John Ruff

Of course he’s a fucking nazi

  • Halou

“I can ignore every rule both domestic & international because Donald Trump.”
    – Every dick tater alive today.

  • JWC

Watching old newsreels of the manicial Hilter ranting and raving and whipping the faithful into a madding furor begged vast similarities to last night Phoenix rally/.Its time for America to WAKE UP

  • Gerry Fisher

This whole journey that the non-majority-of-voters sent us on is so wildly irresponsible and callous. We’ll be lucky to come to the end of it without major damage to the world or to our country.
