VIRGINIA: Ad Agency Tweaks Iconic State Slogan

Ad Week reports:

Back in 1969, it was a playfully controversial tagline. Today, one small tweak turned it into a statement of tolerance and solidarity in an increasingly divided America. The Martin Agency of Richmond, Va., responded to the violence and hatred displayed in Charlottesville, Va., last weekend by telling as many people as possible that its home state is for everyone.

Copywriter Robin McLaughlin helped develop “Virginia Is for Lovers” nearly 50 years ago (when Martin was still known as Martin & Woltz) after running through variations on “Virginia is for…” The line, which was inducted into New York’s Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame by popular vote in 2009, is now widely recognized as America’s longest-running state tourism slogan.

They tweaked the classic tagline to read “Virginia Is for Everyone” and added the hashtag #standforlove to emphasize that, contrary to widely circulated images of torch-wielding white supremacists and violent clashes between protesters and counter-protesters, Virginia is a place that welcomes all visitors.

  • MBear

    No

  • Tawreos

I am betting that a majority of those white supremacists were home grown. They may welcome everyone’s tourism dollars, but they don’t really welcome everyone.

    • james1200

Virginia went for Obama twice in a landslide and it stuck by Hillary by a comfortable margin. Before Obama, I believe they had voted Republican for forty years. The state has changed. MOST of the state has changed.

      • John Ruff

I wish I could believe you, but ot hasn’t changed.

        • james1200

It’s true, I swear! Demographic changes are hitting the entire south but especially Virginia.

          https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/wp/2017/06/12/virginia-is-no-longer-a-purple-state/?utm_term=.80d1fd2a6b14
Virginia is no longer a purple state

“A few years ago, one would have said Perriello didn’t have a chance in a statewide general elections. Democrats couldn’t run too far left for fear of generating a strong backlash in conservative strongholds and losing college-educated, professional white voters in Northern Virginia. Now, however, most any Democrat to the right of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) can rack up a huge lead in Northern Virginia counties and turn out the minority vote in the Richmond area. He’ll lose downstate, red counties, but it hardly matters these days given the margins he can accumulate elsewhere.”

          • Leo

I’m going to meet you both at the middle as a lng-time Virginia native outside of NoVa and say that Rubin’s article is wrong – Virginia is still purple but it is also never going red again thanks to the demographic changes statewide. Virginia is NOT going solidly blue for a longtime.

          • james1200

Not to argue with you but if VA isn’t solidly blue, how did Obama win it by 9 points and Hillary, widely disliked in VA, win it by 5? How have the Republicans not been able to elect a senator from there since 2002 nor win the state in presidential elections since 2004? I’d say we got that state solidly on our side and we should worry more about other states like NC and GA and AZ that Hillary only lost by a couple of points.

          • Randy Left Brooklyn

If Tim Kaine had not been on the ticket Trump may well have carried VA.

          • Leo

What demographics are inspired to turn out and/or not turn-out and when. NoVa staying home while the Liberty University brigade comes out in force is still a real possibility. Whether and where resources should be allocated is a separate argument. When a Confederate sympathizer like Corey Stewart almost wins the Republican primary, keeping some form of focus on the State needs to be a default as far as I’m concerned.

          • james1200

That’s the Republican primary so that’s to be expected. I’m talking about the rest of VA, which seems to be moving on from the Grand Old Party.

          • HozillaSmallpox

There were also two Democrats running against each other. It was the primary for governor. Both Democratic and Republican

          • John Ruff

A huge immigrant population is helping. I treat them like gold, but the local whites can fuck off.

          • stuckinthewoods

Agreed. In my lifetime no one will look at Virginia and say, “it’s actually cerulean.” I wouldn’t put it past going red again. If Cuccinelli had been slightly less nuts he might have won, and although they don’t run together, not having EW Jackson on their ticket might have been enough. I’ll be nervous until November…I’m getting to hate November.

      • HozillaSmallpox

A large swath of south Virginia is all republican and gerrymandered. If it weren’t for the Northern part of Virginia we would be a red state.

        • james1200

But you’re not a red state. You’re a solidly blue state. Who cares why the changes are happening, they’re happening. Read the WAPO article I linked to below…the Republicans haven’t elected a senator from VA since 2002 and a Republican presidential candidate hasn’t won the state since 2004.

          • HozillaSmallpox

Yes but take in the fact that Northern Virginia has a much denser and higher population. Even moderate Democrats have a hard time getting elected in Southwest Virginia. I tried to vote in a local election. They were all Republicans on the ballot. We are lucky to have a democrat as governor. Our Republican congressman spends all of his time kissing Trumps ass while our unemployment and poverty continues to rise.

Edited to add: Where I live we may as well be NC

          • boatboy_srq

Virginia may vote blue in federal contests, but at the state level it’s pretty red. State legislature is solidly Republican, and outside cities like Virginia Beach, C’ville and Alexandria the politics run surprisingly conservative. Until the state-level contests begin to match the federal voting patterns VA isn’t out of the woods.

          • Beagle

The Rs swept the statewide offices (Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General) in 2009, and the Ds swept in 2013. I’d call VA statewide on the bluish side of purple — it needs some attention, but not obsession.
I’d add Richmond, Arlington, and Fairfax County to your not-conservative areas. Fairfax alone has over 1 million people — add in Arlington and Alexandria, and you’re over 1.5 million.

      • Beagle

As a VA resident, I would say Obama and Hillary clearly won VA, but there weren’t any landslides. The three statewide elected officials and both Senators are Ds — again, clear wins but not landslides.

    • Todd20036

Northern Virginia is for everyone. THe rest of it can go suck eggs.

      • HozillaSmallpox

While I understand your disdain for “THe rest” of Virginia, there are some nice places. Blacksburg is a nice town as is Abingdon. I live here because it is my home. I will probably retire somewhere else but for now I will stay as long as I have family here.Someone has to stay and fight.

  • bkmn

What a difference a Dem governor makes.

    • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

      Better marketing?

      • m_lp_ql_m

C’mon. We all know the Dems have no clue when it comes to marketing.

        • The_Wretched

The Dems still us K-Street marketing eventhough all the shops are Republican owned.

    • John Ruff

Not really. It’s still a pos commonwealth

  • TheManicMechanic

But is isn’t, Blanche, it isn’t!

  • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

I can’t speak for all of VA, but I’m damn sure it isn’t for everyone in Fairfax County.

    • Mark

Nor Loudon County, where I suffered through 6 months and got the hell outta there.

      • John Ruff

Ugh Loudon county. You have my sympathies.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

    I would have preferred

    Virginia is for Everyone*

    *Except Nazis
    *And the KKK

  • another_steve

Virginia has long been on the theofascists’ hit list.

Had Ken Cuccinelli won the governorship in November 2013, the takeover would have been complete.

    • stuckinthewoods

Hear, hear. McAuliffe has vetoed more bills than any other governor in Virginia history. They’d have been signed by Cuccinelli.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

    Slogans mean nothing.

  • CB

    Do you feel better now?

  • John Ruff

Virginia is for Haters. Period. I wasted nine years living in Northern Virginia. I escaped to DC in 2003 right when the Va. legislature was amending their constitution to pruposefully discriminate against me and my family. Sorry Va. You had your chance and you fucking blew it. So, fuck you and your revised slogan. And, it’s still legal in Va to fire someone for being LGBTQ.

    • HozillaSmallpox

True you are. I live in the Southwestern part of Virginia and it is totally republican, poor and gerrymandered. And yes you can be fired from a job for being gay. We are not out of the woods yet.

      • John Ruff

Every part of Va outside of the beltway is pretty much the same old south. I can drive over the Potomac river for a cush job in Va but I won’t.

  • Tomcat

Virginia is too military to be for everyone, period.

  • Mark

I lived in VA for 6 months and got the hell out. Never again.

    • John Ruff

      Smart move

    • boatboy_srq

It’s less bigoted and more welcoming than South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and most of Florida; and it’s less worker-unfriendly and less diversity-averse. Not that that makes it good, just that there’s been more progress and less regression than is apparent.

      • Tomcat

Considering it is the northern most of those states that makes sense. However it should learn from it’s northern neighbors and change.

        • boatboy_srq

Change is coming, but it’s slow and surprisingly difficult. Holding state- and local- level elections in odd-numbered years doesn’t help much.

        • HozillaSmallpox

Southwest Virginians resent Northern Virginia because they have been constantly told that all of their money ends up there or Richmond. Unfortunately they are not that smart to realize that the idiot republicans they keep voting for are robbing them blind.

          • Tomcat

Northern Virginia has the biggest amount of military so yes they do get the lions share of everything.

      • John Ruff

I’m sorry, but I disagree. They’re all one in the same.

      • TuuxKabin

        well put. thank you.

THAT’s an interesting turn. IIRC the KKK were nearly as anti-Catholic as they were anti-Blah.

    • John Ruff

And the fucking catholic priest worked in Arlington!!!!! Catholics suck.

Decades later – likely just before being outed.

The article states: ““Racists have polluted minds, twisted by an ideology that reinforces the false belief that they are superior to others.”

but change the subject of this quote and it becomes current:

“Religionists have polluted minds, twisted by an ideology that reinforces the false belief that they are superior to others.”

  • boatboy_srq

I’ve been reading the original version as “Virginia Is For Looters” ever since Erik Prince, Bob McDonnell, and the rest.

And whoever coined the new slogan doesn’t get to VA much: The Beltway is Public-Sector Grifter Central, and outside the Beltway it gets to Unreconstructed White Resentment pretty darned fast.

    • John Ruff

      Like just-15 minutes-outside-the-beltway fast

  • Bluto

Actions, not pretty words. Police response to your hate fest was pathetic.

That Friday night debacle was… IDEK. Saturday, there are excuses: guns and clashes in the streets; (as evidenced in the Vice documentary) cosplay soldiers barking into their cellphones that whoever is in charge “had better come and get my people out of there”, etc. Authorities were busy and it took dozens of State Police to move like three alt-righters out of the park.

But Friday night? They left a 1-deep circle of peaceful protesters surrounded by and at the mercy of a parade of torch-wielding nazis? Really? Fucking really?

Too soon to armchair quarterback Saturday, but not Friday night.

    • John Ruff

      Welcome to Virginnie

at least VA has been coming to its senses politically over the last decade. remember all those GOP creeps like SpongeBob and Cucci?

SALEM, Va. (WSET) – The latest poll from Roanoke College shows that Ralph Northam has a 7 point lead over Ed Gillespie in the race for Virginia’s next governor.

Almost half approve of Governor McAuliffe, while 30 percent disapprove.

Roanoke College says 57% of those who were polled disapprove of the way President Trump is handling the presidency, while one-third approve.

VA is STILL a Confederate State!!! The only thing, that keeps it purple to bluish, is the population in the counties around DC and Richmond. There rest is “Johnny Reb” country, throughout!!!

    And just over the border…
    “North Carolina is for Homophobes”

Virginia is for Lovers came about as a counterpoint to Loving vs Virginia which pilloried Virginia for its anti-miscegenation laws. It was always a slam at the gay movement as Virginia until modern times has been virulently anti-gay.
