Trump Praises Jerry Falwell Jr. As Liberty University Alumni Return Diplomas In Demand For His Removal

Hair Furor ranted about “fake news” for the millionth time this morning and praised Jerry Falwell’s appearance yesterday on Fox & Friends.

Meanwhile this is happening on Falwell’s home turf:

Liberty University graduates are calling on fellow alumni to take a stand against by returning their diplomas. They are also writing letters to Falwell’s office and to the Board of Trustees, calling for his removal. More than 260 people have joined a Facebook group titled “Return your diploma to LU.”

By publicly “revoking all ties, all support present and future,” the graduates hope to send a message to the school that “could jeopardize future enrollment, finances and funding,” according to the Facebook group. They are urging graduates to return their diplomas to Falwell’s office by Sept. 5.

In addition, several alumni have written letter to university officials calling on Falwell to disavow Trump’s statements, NPR reported. In it, the graduates said Falwell’s characterization of Trump’s remarks were “incompatible with Liberty University’s stated values, and incompatible with a Christian witness.”

I really hope the sleazevangelicals wind up paying a heavy price for getting in bed with Trump.

    • Mark Née Fuzz

They probably already have advanced syphilis. I can think of no other excuse for what’s happened to their minds.

      • Reality.Bites

Nothing’s happened. Nothing’s changed. The evangelicals always latch on to the sleaziest, most dishonest politicians they can find. They’re the only ones they can trust to look after their actual interests.

      • bkmn

        Greed, and control over others

I just have a problem with the fact that the rest of us will be paying that price along with them.

What? People who went to Liberty University, a school founded by Jerry Falwell Sr., one of the shadiest shitheels to ever darken public discourse in this country, are now acting shocked that Junior sucks as well? I’d advise them to wake the fuck up, but if you went to LU in the first place it’s way too late for that.

    • jerry

Yeah, Liberty was going bankrupt in the late 80s-early 90s, and got a bailout from Rev. Moon, of all people. That, and their teachings that all federal aid is bad, while raking in over $440 million a year in federal financial aid…these guys are immune to irony and/or hypocrisy.

      • Xuuths

Well, they are a christian college after all.

        • David L. Caster

Some would say Christian in name only.

          • Jeffg166

            As are most christians.

          • CottonBlimp

Maaan, don’t do this. People seeing the word “Christian” as synonynous with “moral” is how we got into this mess in the first place.

If you actually read the Gospels, Jesus was a petty, narcissistic racial supremacist who didn’t just lie that coal jobs were coming back, he lied that *you* were coming back after death. The fact that his teachings led to the bloodiest, most sadistic religion in human history is indicative of the real core of his morals.

These evil shitbirds are completely following Jesus’ teachings that faith in him completely overrides any responsibility to actually be a decent person. The Jesus liberals imagine is just as much a product of cherry-picking and projection as the conservative version, and just as ridiculous.

          • David L. Caster

I don’t defend religion. I do know the history of some religions and the Christians of today and the bible teachings they claim to follow in no way capture the admittedly idealized teachings of Jesus as recorded in the earliest Christian writings. Once the Romans took hold of christianity it became a political tool of the state and everything that followed reflected the evil of a corrupted empire in decline. The events of the present along with those of the past are echoes of that decay and avarice reanimated.

          • CottonBlimp

The evil in the Bible well predates the Roman Empire’s influence. Christ’s Christianity was a nihilistic doomsday cult that pandered to the prejudices of his Jewish followers and lied to them that they could cheat death by abandoning their families and worshipping him unconditionally.

The Roman Empire was not unambiguously evil, nor was their influence on Christianity. The fact is, relatively few Christians were persecuted in pagan Rome compared to how many Christians were persecuted by *other Christians*, so blaming the bloodlust of Christian institutions on Roman culture seems a bit fucked.

This is why I have no sympathy for people who forked over thousands of dollars for worthless degrees.

    • Lizard

I see where you’re coming from, but I know at least one person who went to a hardcore Christian college (not Liberty, but similar) because that was the only way he was going to college without taking out thousands of dollars in loans, which even a “cheap” university costs now. So at least they’re doing the right thing now and telling LU to go fuck itself.

      • thatotherjean

Liberty “University” isn’t exactly cheap. Tuition, room, and board will run you about $35,000 a year, according to their website. You really have to want to keep your kids away from the big, bad, secular world to insist that they go there.

    • ColdCountry

But apparently they ARE waking up. And even though they may be late to the party, they are still welcome, are they not?

Returning diplomas that aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on seems like an empty gesture, but it’s certainly more than Trump’s evangelical advisers are doing. (I’m looking at you, Michele Bachman.)

More ships concentrated in a smaller area, one which doesn’t have any ‘lanes’ for the traffic.

I’m surprised there aren’t more collisions actually. The collisions between merchant ships don’t make the news.

          • David L. Caster

The Captains of US Naval vessels have very little in the way of excuses for colliding with other ships. Failure of command is not one of them.

          • Karl Dubhe

That’s really true for all navies. After all, if you wreck something worth that much, you can expect not to get another one if you broke it due to stupidity.

          • David L. Caster

Navy ships are loaded with sensors of multiple types plus a GPS system accurate to within about a meter. If that equipment is functioning and being used correctly there should be no reason to run aground or collide at sea with another vessel unless there is a deliberate attempt to do so by one or more of the ships in question, weather and equipment failure notwithstanding. Even weather and equipment my not be an excuse depending on the circumstances.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

Somebody on twitter pointed out that we never had collisions before we had a POTUS that shares all our top secret intel with the Kremlin. That’s probably an exaggeration, but it is conspicuous.
