Trump Calls Boston Protesters “Anti-Police Agitators”

The Boston Globe reports:

Despite the fact that there were few arrests, and the day was largely peaceful, President Trump tweeted that there were “anti-police agitators” at the Boston events. Authorities had feared the “free speech” event would attract white supremacists.

Two of the rally’s scheduled keynote speakers have ties to extremist elements — including one who attended the rally in Charlottsville, Va., last weekend that turned violent. Seeking to prevent violent confrontations here, police and city officials partitioned the Common with fencing designed to keep the dueling crowds separate. Dozens of police officers in reflective vests were stationed at entrances and throughout the park.

Those who attended the “free speech” rally were vastly outnumbered by the counterprotestors. About 50 people appeared to attend the rally before it ended. But people streamed from MBTA stations and nearby streets to join the counterprotest, while others waited at the Common.

    Fuck You!!

  • Lazycrockett

Im sure Marty is gonna have a very stern reply.

    • Reality.Bites

Really? The long-time Democrat and former union leader seems like such a Trump fan:

In a speech given on January 25, 2017, Walsh reaffirmed Boston’s status as a sanctuary city for people living in the country without documentation. The address was given in the same week when President Donald Trump threatened to pull federal funding to cities that have a policy of protecting undocumented immigrants by not prosecuting them for violating federal immigration laws. A defiant Walsh said, “If people want to live here, they’ll live here. They can use my office. They can use any office in this building

  • MBear

    Anti-Nazi = Anti-Police?

So…what is he trying to say here?
Did he just call the police Nazis?

    • Friday

Sounds like he was wrong about the BPD in all this. Cause they weren’t giving the Nazis the kind of leeway they got in Charlottesville.

    • J Ascher

Donald’s not that sophisticated. Jared or Ivanka would need to spell it out for him over many, many weekends.

      • Nowhereman

Yeah, but they are not available Friday evening through Saturday evening.

  • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

He’s trolling us and his deplorables love him for it.

    • Carl

He’s going all in. He can’t unify so he has to double down on divisiveness.

    • Cuberly

It’s exactly what he’s doing. He was most likely on the john texting bff bannon & that’s when he got the idea.

      • whollyfool

I’m not so sure he’s smart enough for that. I think it’s a shadow troll saying “you should tweet about all those anti police protesters!” Then we get the result. His followers cheer anyway.

        • HanyBaal

Yup, Anti-Police is a deliberate term to tar the opposition as lawless, a la “crooked Hillary”

          • kaydenpat

But they weren’t lawless so this is just another one of lies. He has cemented his rep as a consummate liar.

    • margaretpoa

Yep. I pointed out to a co-worker that another co-worker of ours is motivated entirely by his delight at Trump’s ability to piss off liberals. He’s said it.

      • Ninja0980

        And so have many others.
If they thought getting shot in the head would tick off liberals, they’d put a gun to their heads and pull the trigger themselves.

        • Lori

Yup. They’re like overgrow toddlers, perpetually going through the terrible twos. Party of adults my ass.

My friends and I used to joke that Obama could solve a lot of this country’s problems by signing an executive order making it illegal to set oneself on fire, which would result in thousands of them immediately setting themselves on fire because no way was that n****r going to take away their freedom!!! It no longer seems like a joke.

          • Carl

Its not too late to say Obama did that. Post the meme of Facebook. Twitter. See what happens….

        • Skokieguy [Larry]

Burn down their own house if they thought a black neighbor might choke on the smoke for 15 minutes.

        • Carl

But they really get their feeling hurt when the liberals shun them. It’s pathetic.

        • Reality.Bites

Let’s spread the word that it would tick us off.

      • Todd20036

A Trumpanzee would eat shit if a liberal was forced to smell his breath afterwards.

    • leastyebejudged

Exactly, the media makes these people famous.

And everyone ignores the real problem. None of this is new, none of this is a new creation, it was always right there, lurking, waiting.

To deny that this is what the USA is, well that’s just to delude yourself.

    • clay

Trump feels that agitation is the worse thing, ever, because it’s the worse thing he’s ever felt.

      • These folks have never read or heard of Nazi propaganda via Joseph Goebels. Hitler and Goebels stated that lies repeated often enough will be believed. Bannon knows this.

        • clay

It doesn’t even make sense– how is the entire crowd the agitators?

        • clay

I guess it’s the same way they all believe they’re all “leaders”.

    • Because of Trump, Haitians are crossing the Canadian border en masse. The problem is that if they are not refugees or political asylum seekers, they will be deported back to the USA. That being said, they will be arrested on the American side. Easy pickings!

  • Carl

A mere handful of the counter protesters caused a problem, but every one of the white supremacists they were protesting were…. ya know… white supremacists.

Guess which side our idiot president takes.

    • Lakeview Bob

Calling him an idiot is too polite.

  • Cuberly

He’s not going to say anything till he gets all the facts, fer realZ!

  • And Donald takes another step closer to a full-on endorsement of Nazis & white supremacists.

Step 1 (Charlottesville): Equate both sides with each other, condemn both
Step 2 (where we are): Pretend the Nazis don’t exist, condemn the counter-protesters only and completely mischaracterize why they were there; also accuse them of crimes and wrongdoing they did not commit
Step 3 (to come): Condemn only the counter-protesters, but airbrush the intentions of the Nazis and white supremacists and claim they were the victims

    • coram nobis

Step 4: Encourage local police or FBI to deploy agents-provocateur on the COINTEL pattern, blame the counter-demonstrators.

More than 80 percent of evangelicals voted for Trump, the largest proportion of all religious groups polled. These voters often say that though they do not always approve or Trump’s personal behavior, they admire his leadership skills and business acumen, and appreciate that he kept his promise to nominate a conservative to the Supreme Court.

    • Ken M

If the “Free Speech” rally goers (50 roughly) was all that could be mustered for a Boston Rally, we, as a nation, are in trouble.

    • TimCA

I’ll play. The official speakers list at the rally include a whole litany of racist extremists. Just one example is Kyle Chapman (aka Based Stickman) an avowed white nationalist whose major claim to notoriety is beating political opponents over the head with lead pipes. Another official speaker is Joe Biggs. You can check out his Facebook page as I’ve linked it below too. I think it’s safe to say you don’t go to rallies featuring speakers like this unless you’re of like mind. Can I produce an official notarized copy of each rally-goer’s Aryan Brotherhood or Nazi Party membership card? No. But in the same way I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume attendees at a cross burning hosted by the KKK are Klan sympathizers, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that attendees at an alt-right event featuring self described white supremacist speakers are in fact themselves white supremacist sympathizers.

This must be the pivot his enablers keep talking about.

  • i come from an LEO family, on my father’s side as well as my mother’s. i watch a lot of fantasy cop shows while i’m sewing or making dinner, just because i love the fact that the writers can create these wonderful, fantastical people who are all about real Justice.

but i know reality is different, and i don’t love the LEO on the job in my ‘hood right now. they just beat down a kid this week, for the ‘crime’ of talking back to them when they were arresting him for the nonviolent action of having some pot on him.

worship of the police is stupid and wrong. they aren’t all “heroes” and in fact many of them are violent racists. the fire department folks are a bit different, but in the end, they all stand together, the thin blue line, backing each other up at any cost. it’s interesting, in this age when unions are dying, that the police unions are more powerful than ever, and can pay for top dollar defense attorneys, when one of those in uniform does something bad. which is, sadly, often.

the traitor knows nothing about the reality of the LEO community or what they do. the closest he’s ever come to that is when he tips the doorman at one of his buildings, which probably isn’t often. even the SS are trying to distance themselves away from him, cause all he wants to do is get money for their services while those are required, because he’s “the president.”

in truth, the cops have been pretty good with most of these protest situations, lately. i give credit to the commanding officers who have learned from good examples, like we had here in Cleveland, during the RNC gathering. nobody killed, lots of cops on foot and on bikes, plenty of training teaching methods developed in other countries with a low history of violence. keep that up, LEO community. this is what we’re going to need, in the coming times.

    • KnownDonorDad

I have a huge amount of respect for the BPD. When the final Boston bomber was caught, we took to the streets and cheered every police and emergency responder vehicle that passed by, not out of worship, but out of genuine thanks that they did their job – which, ideally, is how it ought to be.

      • our locals still have real problems, and my community service volunteer activity is a related to that. they don’t give a fuck about the Blah people here, not at all. they keep killing all these young black men, when they could simply shoot them in the leg and take them down, if said young men are in the act of a violent crime. but mostly, the cops here just want to shoot and kill anyone, anytime, even for the simple act of taking a bus without having a proper pass. the mainstream media barely reports the truth; only the most egregious examples make the morning news, which i am now watching regularly due to requirements of my new job.

people need to educate themselves about the judges they vote on, in their local areas. we don’t get any say when it comes to who is police commissioner, and our only ability to change things comes with our right to vote for who is in a judge’s office or DA. thank the gods i don’t believe in for cell phone cameras; use that whenever you can. youtube as well. we have to protect ourselves.

my morning group, as iirc i’ve mentioned here, is a walkabout set of local folks, b/c a little girl was raped and killed here, on her way to school. the police did nothing, and are doing nothing, because this ‘hood is poor and black. so we are stepping up, M-F, 7am and 2pm, the times our elementary kids walk to and from school. i am so mad to know that our local LT has no interest in coordinating with us. all that matters right now is “safety” downtown, where white people who don’t live in this city go to work. my anger fuels my ability to walk the kids here to school, despite my health challenges. fuck these racists and pedophiles who would prey on the children in my ‘hood just because they are poor and black. i will kill any predator who tried to touch my neighbors’ kids, and i don’t even have any of my own.

        • KnownDonorDad

Awful. Thank you for protecting those kids.

    • JWC

The cops, lawyers, doctors, firemen All of them have any given variety of personalities in their packs Not all are straight A,s Not all are socially stable. Not all emotionally balanced. We hope that they are,We hope that there is a system in place that weeds the misfits out and places them in other options. Some, like the police, attract socal misfits and encourage them Bullies can be seen as authority figures and encouraged. Some how the arguent of talking and difussing a situation looses out to blatant force

    • Jukesgrrl

I grew up with two different families with police officer fathers. Those men were both alcoholics who engaged in domestic abuse. I absolutely know not all cops are like that. Many risk their lives for the safety of the community. The problem is they stick together to the point the public can’t tell which is which.

  • KnownDonorDad

Trump got one thing right: “Great job by all law enforcement officers and Boston Mayor @Marty_Walsh.” He should take note, however, that Mayor Walsh spoke out very strongly about not wanting the sort of element that caused murder and mayhem in Charlottesville, and he never framed the counter-protest as anti-police, ever. Yes, there were no doubt some antifa people there, but to call the thousands of people there “anti-police agitators” is ridiculous.

    Something off topic I found

Strauss-Howe generational theory, developed by William Strauss and Neil Howe, which states that human events can be loosely organized in terms of recurring eighty year cycles, or saecula, which unfold in four twenty year turnings.

The first turning is a season of rebirth, social unity and building new institutions. In our current American generational cycle the first turning is the post World War II period. This is followed by a second turning, characterized by a spiritual awakening and a general rejection of the previous turning’s values, which we saw begin in the 60’s. The third turning is a time of unraveling, where society loses faith in institutions and business as usual. And the fourth turning, which for us began with the financial crisis of 2007, is a time of breakdown where social institutions collapse and the way is cleared for the next first turning.

    • Max_1

But in the larger picture, really isn’t that O/T…

      • Michael R

I like the idea there is a next turning , but do we have to get through a ” Handmaid’s Tale ” America before we get there ? Twenty years implies maybe 10 more years of this bullshit .

And history’s so complex you can always find ways to pick and choose your stories to fit the theory! Wonderful!

It may sound paranoid, but I think you’re right about behind the scenes encouragement of various forms of anti-science trolling for political purposes.

      They,
      Delegitimize objectivity.
      Create distrust of expertise.
      Encourage discord and confusion.
      Suppress or distract critical voices.
Literally weaken and kill people with the anti-vaccine movement.
      etc…

    • Todd20036

People who are anti-vaxxers are anti-science.

      But some anti-vaxxers are pro”freedom”.

I’ve seen some far left people be anti vaxxers, too.

I wouldn’t rule out the far right pulling this shit, but it could be the far left, too

      • SoCalGal20

Oh, there’s definitely a liberal element to the anti-vaxxer movement too, but the whole thing just strikes me as as the sort of thing we’ve seen from the right. And I do wonder of there’s somebody putting money behind it, like the Mercers ir somebody like that.

A whole lot of (shouldn’ts) have been happening in the last year.

          • SoCalGal20

My understanding is that Mueller may ALREADY have Trump’s taxes from FINCEN. Pretty sure his returns aren’t immune in a criminal investigation run out of DOJ.

    • ultragreen

That is not relevant to a criminal investigation. The judge merely ruled that IRS tax records can’t be surrendered to a private party using the Freedom of Information Act without prior consent from the affected person(s) or organization(s). Even then, some tax records can be made available through civil suits involving divorce, inheritance, bankruptcy, etc., if there are compelling reasons to release them.

Here is a bad scenario that could actually happen.
Trump actually can demand his personal information be sealed for 25 years and then quit and everything will have to be dropped. Then he gets away scott free.

    • Adam King

I think that only applies to his “presidential” stuff. And I wonder if it applies to criminal investigations, especially if they involve other people of interest.

        • Gustav2

What makes that cocktail so sweet?:

          “Honey…”

    • Donald continues to behave as if he won in a landslide and can successfully threaten the political careers of Republican Senators, Representatives, and Governors.

The problem, and it’s clear Drunk Uncle Bannon still doesn’t see it either, is Donald has no power other than to cause trouble. Every one of his proposals has been either killed or declared DOA in Congress. More threats would not force Ryan or McConnell to pick up any of them.

Donnie wants money for his stupid wall. Well, even the Republicans in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California don’t want it to be built. He wants Trumpcare taken up again, after McConnell already signaled they’re done for this year and there’s no political upside to passing it and repealing ACA, not when lots of people know what the GOPers are trying to do and they’re pissed.

I think if anything, this presages the possible Republican political civil war.

“Police estimate that as many as 40,000 people packed into the streets around Boston Common.”

This estimate, reported by the CBC, is the biggest I’ve seen.

Has anyone else said the crowd was that big??

  • Treant

OT: Turns out I don’t have a mouse. I had at least two mice. I gotta say, I can recommend the Tomcat trap. They’re easy, easy to clean, and reusable.

Both are re-baited and out on the garage floor…

    • Ken M

      Mom and Dad?

      • Treant

Quite possibly, but I don’t see any nests in the places where they usually build them.

    • With mice, as with cockroaches or crickets, there’s never just the one.

    • Nychta

My mouse/rat story: A year or so ago my cat Molly caught two roof rats in succession and brought each into the house. Each got away from her and scurried off to the kitchen, where they infested the oven and the tea/herb shelf. I bought a Have-a-Heart trap, caught one of them, and released it outdoors.

The other rat accidentally fell into the box the trap came in, which I’d set alongside the garbage can, and couldn’t get out. It made me laugh that the trap packaging was as effective as the trap itself.

I released that rat outdoors too, asked Molly to stop bringing rats home, and haven’t had a problem since.

      • Treant

Alas, my mice ended up splay-legged as the snapping trap broke their necks.

I’d love to use a Have-A-Hart, but anywhere I release them, they’re going to end up in somebody’s house. If they’d live in the garden, I’d be cool with that.

  • Adam King

      Weird, isn’t it?

Beyond weird. Spend all that money on a stadium, yet not a penny on something to promote the well being of its citizens. It is insanity.

      • Tragic.

High school football is something of a religion there.

      • SoCalGal20

Oh, I know but $72M and luxury boxes for corporate sponsors in a high school football stadium? Come on now.

    • Imagine the STEM educational facilities which could’ve been built and the number of highly qualified teachers who could be hired to staff it with $72m.

This country’s priorities are beyond fucked up, when a high school sport is clearly given higher priority over educating young people’s minds.

      • Cuberly

There was a random twitterer claiming that part of the reason Bannon was ostracized to his office most of the time was because he reeked of booze.

26 “Here is what these words mean:

Mene[e]: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
27 Tekel[f]: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
28 Peres[g]: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”

Or, my favorite, from Omar Khayyám:

“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,

      Huh. 1945-1865 = 70. 2017-1945 = 72. It’s almost like we repeat the same mistakes every human lifetime…

My stars, whatever was going on in 1775 or so that might possibly meet this bill?

      • Michael R

I found this earlier today , I like 70 years better because it implies this shit is almost over , by the 80 year plan we have 10 more years of this bullshit

        • houstonray

But another war before it’s all back to normal? From what I remember, Bannon was a big fan of this theory and he believed/believes that an apocalyptic war is coming in this cycle.

          Indeed:

Revolutionary + approx 80yrs = Start of Civil War
Civil War + approx 80yrs = Start of WWII
          WWII + approx 80yrs = 2021 Start of ??

Bullsh*t Trump… William Gross, superintendent-in-chief of the Boston police, praised a large group of protesters gathered at the corner of Washington Street and Temple Place for “doing it the right way.”

“Unanimously, we told people with hatred that this is not happening in Boston,” Gross told the protesters around 6 p.m.

Gross shook hands with some protesters and took photos with others.

“You deserve it. All of that that was negative, you turned it into a positive,” Gross said.

Of the right-wing groups who were at the Common Saturday, he said: “You ran them out of town.”

That dumb fuck Milo is on C-SPAN right now. Interviewed by Regnery President Marji Ross on “After Words.” Regnery publishes conservative and Tea Party books. I muted them. I want to slap the hell out of both of them.

Has anyone else noticed that C-SPAN seems to have a lot more conservative bent these days? I see more of Pat Buchannan and his ilk along with shows sponsored by right wing think tanks on C-SPAN in 2017 as compared to last year.

Okay, I REALLY *insert every synonym for despise* Drumpf.

Seriously. Intense, burning dislike. Even if he never existed in this dimension there would still be left behind a singularity of darkness and evil in Time and Space locked where he would be at that moment. A nothing/something that life and goodness recoils from instinctually. A screaming in one’s own soul repeating “WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG” over and over, whether they heed it or not.

This… Person? Being? Thing. This terrible thing should never have been anyone’s leader, father, role model? But yes, it has reproduced and his progeny isn’t much better than he is, though we don’t know much about the youngest or the daughter-he-never-talks-about…? We can hope that he failed with Barron at least.

In any case, hopefully he will fade into obscurity soon after he plummets from the throne he occupies at the moment. And not soon enough.

Boy, if Donnie ever started doing the things a President should do on a daily basis and stopped shooting off his big mouth and tweeting out his every impulse, some semblance of peacefulness just might return to our days. Not going to happen of course, simply because this shit-for-brains Prez just has to be the center of attention 24/7. Interesting how he sort of praises dictators around the world for how strong and masterful they handle things and now, with his own citizens, uplifts and lends credence to low, vile, people and organizations and denigrates ordinary citizens who revile the things that history has taught us are wrong and sometimes evil. Nazism, racial supremacy, bigotry, hatred of others for irrational differences such as religion, ethnicity, color, language, gender, sexual orientation, etc. He seems to want to sound ‘fair’ by spreading the blame for troublesome occurrences when, many times, the blame falls squarely on those who want to and do start the trouble. According to Donnie’s theory, the United States would have to accept half the blame for WWII because we fought the Nazi horde, even though it was to save Europe and eventually us from the evil and hell-on-earth that they espoused and created.

    • Reality.Bites

You didn’t fight to save Europe. You waited years till you had no choice because you were attacked. You fought to save yourselves, and if Europe benefited, that was a bonus, not the goal.

Indeed, Canada and the European nations even declared war against Japan a day before you did!

      • Gianni

And out of my whole statement, that’s what you picked to gripe about? I even stated that we also entered the war in Europe to eventually protect ourselves. The US population at the time was very much for minding our own business and looking after our own country. That, of course, all changed after the Japanese attacked us. Germany then declared war on us and we on them. By entering the European war, for whatever reason, it then became the goal to free Europe from Germany and the Nazi’s and protect ourselves. The fact, however, remains that without America’s entry into the war, the whole of continent would have gone totally down the toilet. Other than England standing in defiance on her last legs, the rest of Europe was already toast.

Argh, NPR had Yet Another of those “Trump Voters Still Love Trump” stories on the air today (in addition to all the “Trump Voters Still Love Trump” stories which are all over the web).

This is a real SOP. I don’t know what to do about it. Organizers can say, “Our protest will be 100% non-violent”, but if anarchist antifas (who are “not down”) crash—especially at the end—what can you do about it? [Except tell the cops “they’re not w/ us”]

        Good on ya, Marina.

        • Reality.Bites

Yes – her Counsellor Troi accent wasn’t her own. She came up with it, feeling it made sense for her to speak with a unique accent.

At the time, since I knew her to be of Greek origin, I assumed she spoke with some form of Greek accent that was her natural way of speaking. It was quite a shock first time I heard her with her normal London accent.

Of course it all fell apart when we met her American-accented mother. It’s interesting. Today actors are expected to do different accents flawlessly. British and Australian actors seem to do it best with American accents because of their huge over-exposure to American popular culture. Canadians, because of broad similarities in some of our accents and some American accents, don’t do nearly as well.

There is also, a fairly recent phenomenon, a comic Canadian accent, used in American humour to make a character identifiably Canadian. When I was a kid you could literally go months or years without there being a single reference to Canada on American TV. The idea of Canada being a recurring plot point, as on How I Met Your Mother and South Park, would have been quite odd.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxSArdxK4LY&spfreload=10

          • “British and Australian actors seem to do it best with American accents because of their huge over-exposure to American popular culture.”

It’s part of their training. American actors are also trained, but we’ve been slow to catch up — when I was a theater student, we had one term of what they called “Phonetics” — accents and regional speech patterns. I understand that with British and Australian actors, it’s much more intensive.

          • Reality.Bites

Yes – but increasingly I’m seeing it in young, barely trained actors. Like the guy who plays Archie on Riverdale. He’s from New Zealand. He was 19 when he started working on the show. Never went to college and didn’t go to an arts high school.

          • Rob NYNY

And yet there are Brits and Irish who have never learned a decent American accent. Liam Neeson and Jane Seymour, for example, and earlier Peter Lawford, Leslie Howard, Lawrence Harvey. Marina Sirtis had a godawful fake American Southern accent in some made-for-TV movie. Eric McCormack’s American accent seems to wander around the country, and he’s Canadian. Cary Grant invented his own accent, but when you are Cary Grant, you get to do that. In “The Untouchables,” Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman, and Matthew Broderick did not eve try to coordinate their accents. Michael Caine has the same half-suppressed cockney accent in every movie he’s ever been in.

This is so perfect. I have a friend who hates musicals and loves chubbies. The one musical I ever managed to get him to was Hair. And years ago when we went to New York and I had to find non-musicals to see, we saw James Corden in the History Boys.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve sent him the link.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

I would upvote this just for having the music from Hair. But it was pretty great as a comedy skit too.

        You could be right.

Wrong again – Trump tweets before he has enough facts to draw accurate logical conclusions and is making mistakes he can’t see, but the rest of us can.
He is the uber-narcissist constantly posing and enthralled with his self image in a mirror and needs to constantly feed his hungry ego an overrated impression of himself.

Salon: U.S. Grant saw this coming.

    http://www.salon.com/2017/08/19/the-confederate-mystique-why-is-white-america-hooked-on-the-poisonous-mythology-of-a-criminal-regime/

Grant’s unrelenting moral clarity, I would argue, is the reason for his strange reversal of fortune in the afterlife. One of the most famous of all Americans during his lifetime and for decades after that, today he is largely an anachronistic figure confined to the history books, where he has often been depicted as a vulgar, corrupt boozehound. As we have recently been reminded, Robert E. Lee, the dashing Virginia gentleman Grant crushed and defeated, is still venerated as a hero in certain quarters of our society, and his likenesses can be found in literally hundreds of American cities and towns.
    * * *
…He did foresee, however, that the failure of Reconstruction — in granting full citizenship to the former slaves but then allowing the Southern states to disenfranchise them — would give the resentful former slave-owners disproportionate power in the Electoral College. This was a grave mistake whose consequences would be dire for our democracy, he wrote: “It looks like a political triumph for the south, but it is not. The southern people have nothing to dread more than the political triumph of the men who led them into secession. That triumph was fatal to them in 1860. It would be no less now.”

Grant’s Personal Memoirs are well worth reading, by the way.

    • DoctorDJ

      Been there. Done that.

      Also, read Sandburg’s Lincoln biographies.

Required reading of any true American.

      • coram nobis

Also worth reading Grant’s Last Battle, about the circumstances under which he wrote those memoirs.

I think I am a verb instead of a personal pronoun. A verb is anything that signifies to be; to do; or to suffer. I signify all three.
        — Grant

I just saw that. I always associated him in my head with George Carlin and the Smothers Brothers. The last of a generation.

But we are now once again living in an era where good comedians are often the people who make the most sense. Andy Borowitz’s humor (and George Takei’s!) has been an essential tool for living in the age of Trump.
