LIVE VIDEO: Massive Boston Crowd Turns Out To Protest White Supremacist “Free Speech” Rally

NBC News reports:

Thousands of counter-protesters flooded the streets of Boston on Saturday to confront right-wing “free speech” demonstrators in a display of solidarity after the deadly white nationalist rally in Virginia last weekend.

The counter-protesters gathered near Boston’s Malcolm X Boulevard, chanting “Whose streets? Our streets!” and “No Trump, No KKK, No Fascist USA.” They also held signs that read: “Resist,” “Black Lives Matter,” and “Get the hell off my lawn, you bigots.”

The group of diverse demonstrators marched to meet the hundreds expected at a “Boston Free Speech Rally” in Boston Common, a downtown city park. Organizers of the counter-protest told NBC News they viewed the free speech rally, taking place at the same time, as code for hate speech.

That’s the odd thing about these people. “I have the right to Free Speech!”

Yes, you do, But other people ALSO have Free Speech and they can tell you to go fuck yourself. Freedom of Speech doesn’t mean you are free from the CONSEQUENCES of that speech.

Don’t believe me? Go into work tomorrow and tell your boss they’re an asshole and see how long you remain employed.

there still is no such thing as “alt-left”

    • Todd20036

Liberals. Its not a bad word

      • Bubba in TX

I respectfully disagree. The “alt-left” term was created by Britebart to allow people like Trump to claim false equivalence.

If there really WERE an “alt-left”, it would likely consist of “extremists” who will stop at nothing–including violence–to rid the world of white supremacists. Not a good thing.

In my mind, liberals and progressives who oppose and denounce NAZIs and white supremacists should simply be called “humans”. As in, humans with souls and a sense of right and wrong. (Frankly, you could say the same for Republicans who are against the alt-right.)

  • Gustav2

These people don’t know what 1st amendment means; that THE GOVERNMENT can’t arrest and try you for your hate speech. It doesn’t mean that they don’t face consequences for their hate speech from the population.

    • Natty Enquirer

Exactly right. And those consequences do not lawfully include physical violence, either.

      • Charlie 2001

I have taken to giving money to the ACLU since Trump was elected. They protect the freedom of speech even when that speech is contemptible.

        • j.martindale

I will pick up the slack. The way to fight contemptible speech is to reveal it and condemn it, not repress it. Repression of free speech can be used against anyone, and has been

The people at Boston had their free speech. But in the battle of ideas, their speech lost the battle and the war.

          • Ninja0980

My cousin is female but the rest applies.
She personally pistes me off more then my right wing aunt/uncle/cousin do.
Because she flat out told me my rights along with others were expendable for the “greater” good aka the issues Bernie wanted.
            Fuck that shit.

      • ultragreen

You should study history. See the Enabling Act, 1933, of Nazi Germany. That piece of legislation enabled the Nazi party to rule by decree and abandon democracy, making World War II possible. The members of parliament who voted in favor of the Enabling Act were the conservatives and centrists. Only the Left consistently opposed the Nazi government.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enabling_Act_of_1933

Then you should reflect on who has been capitulating to the right-wing policies of the Republicans for the past 40 years in the United States (centrist Democrats like the Clintons). Only the Left has consistently opposed this increasingly conservative shift in American politics. If this trend continues, the US will become a fascist state like Nazi Germany.

  • i find this all to be too well planned. i’m very proud of the counter-protestors in all the cities that have had these sorts of responsive rallies. but think about it for a minute. these “free speech” nazis are holding their demonstrations… where? in ultra blue cities like portland, boston, and other places, now. Cville is probably one of the more liberal places in that state, as well. why aren’t they calling to their brethren in places in the deep red south or west? no, this seems like a ‘movement’ to incite the almost inevitable incidents of violence that happen when far right or left wings clash politically. almost like they want to give the traitor an excuse to call down martial law, and distract the nation as a whole from that fact that his administration and party are filled with traitors.

    • Stubenville

      1) because Trump lets them think they can.
      2) because even they know there’s no point in trying to build any more support in depressed, rural areas.
      3) because their very nature is provocative, trying for intimidating.
      4) it can be more than one reason.

      • Mickey Bitsko

        5) They thought the Boston anti-busing racists of the 1970’s would turn out en masse in support?

        • clay

(forgetting that would be suburban, not downtown)

    • The Nazis and white supremacists are going where they’re going precisely to try to cause violence. This, they believe, will cause the gov’t to crack down on the counterprotesters, and also for ‘normal folks’ to realize they prefer the Nazis.

Only it doesn’t work because the Nazis always underestimate how much ‘normal folks’ hate them, and can see through the transparent bullshit strategy.

The biggest problem is when anarchists and the violent far, far left do show up because they’d like violence for reasons similar to that of the Nazis: the false belief it’ll bring some kind of revolution. Hence why everyone else needs to deny and stop the violence.

      • popebuck1

They assume we will take the bait and give them the violent response (and more importantly, the FOOTAGE of the violent response) that they crave, so that both they and the Police State will be justified in cracking down on the terrible, violent “alt-left.”

They assume this because they’re convinced they’re intellectual giants and strategic geniuses, on top of being SO SO strong and manly that we just can’t deal. They’ve really internalized that whole “Ayn Rand superman” thing.

      • imma gonna be Real wit yall now. i am evil. i am the child of evil people. actual nazis, in fact, the first ones.

my father’s side of the family are from a place in Scandinavia that hated the Russians so much, they joined up with Hitler. on my mother’s side, there are so many rapist white men we’ve pretty much lost count about how many of our ancestors on the female side were raped; suffice to say probably all of us were, until my nieces’ generation. if “blood tells,” then mine is corrupted with the worst kinds, slavers and nazis and ultra far somethings. but my father was a Good Man, despite his background, and my mother is a strong woman, even if she has treated me poorly. for some reason i lucked out and got the better part of their genes.

but i will tell you, if i live long enough to see and survive a Revolution in this country? you are correct, you would not want to be my enemy. i was taught about all sorts of evil things in the military, and more in grad school. a part of me longs to inflict all that on the haters. i’m good at violence.

          “and more in grad school”?

          • i have a master’s in divinity and did my doctoral work in comparative Semitic philology. short version: how to use the idea of gawds to kill people with fanfare, and how they used to kill people before monotheism. trust me when i say you wouldn’t want to be murdered that way. but the ancient texts are full of all sorts of ways to make a “wrongly believing” person suffer for that “sin.” A to the B to the C way, instructional wise. then there’s that modern stuff i learned at Quantico, where they train assassins and officers and the FBI. i am a woman who fears no man; i can kill even the biggest guy with one finger.

            And I’m still here! Cool.

We are all just reckless combinations of good intentions, bad parenting, high hopes, genetic redundancies, ill conceived notions, flawed concepts and a desperate need to be important to someone we care about. I think my Aunt Christine (Aunt Teen) said it best,

If Boston is any example, they want to whine and cry about being repressed. The “free speech” organizers were coy about what they were actually going to talk about, they got a huge counter-reaction, especially after Cville, and now they’re wailing about the First Amendment being dead.

Were the “officially” shut down, or did no one show up?

    • Ken M

very, VERY few made an appearance.

      • ColdCountry

Looking at the pictures, I think 30 might be a generous count – haven’t seen anything official, yet – which would mean they were out numbered about 500 to 1. Love it!

        • AJayne

Last “official” estimate I read (Boston Globe?) was 50 of them, 40,000 against them…

    • AJayne

They had noon-two scheduled. Left by 1:30, according to news reports.

      • ColdCountry

So they probably left pretty much on their own? Looked as though the police were keeping people out of shouting distance, not just rock-throwing distance, so I don’t see how they could feel all that threatened. Until they had to leave their little “safe space” and come back to the real world, that is.

        • AJayne

I think they were escorted out – saw photos of them between lines of protesters chanting slogans. No physical alterations…

Their claims of threats were completely bogus. One thread I read on Twitter was by a guy who was in the line. When a Nazi near him dropped his flag, he tried to grab it from him, but was stopped by other protesters so they could leave without incident.

          • ColdCountry

I found this article interesting. There is a huge disconnect somewhere, but I’m not sure where.
            https://www.yahoo.com/news/marched-boston-faces-voices-rally-counterprotest-134350189.html

          • AJayne

Seems to me the disconnect is in the brain cells of people who would say, “I didn’t vote, but he’s the Pres, so I agree with him” – who’s raising kids who think that way? We *agree* just because he was elected?

Also, the gamer Catholic guy who wants politics to be “fun” – what does he mean by that? No one asked him, apparently. No one asked any of the (R)s why they are (R)s – what does that party do that they support? A disconnect there, too. What/how are they thinking? It matters.

          • ColdCountry

And so many say they aren’t white supremacists, they’re just… what the hell are they? Do they even know? Have they ever heard of the Duck Test? ‘Cause they are sure looking like ducks.

O/T but the shooter in Kissimmee has been identified and he’s black.
Expect to see the people blaming BLM, Obama etc. in short order.
Also expect to see the part where he was a former marine and was committed twice to mental hospitals yet still could get guns easily to be overlooked as well.

They did a segment on Smalls on “Drunk History.” Both informative and funny.

          • SoCalGal20

Drunk History is awesome (I haven’t seen all the eps. The Alexander Hamilton one with Lin-Manuel Miranda was nominated for an Emmy.

        • Paula

I knew about him. I graduated high school in Charleston, SC. That was where the incident took place. He sailed that ship right past Fort Sumter. I learned about it in school. Some of the white kids did not like this story.

    • JWC

Given that the removal of confederate statues and symbols was the premise for these protest is horse puckey. Basically, as the civil war ended in 1865, it was another 75 years of smouldering sentiment before the first symbols started to appear.Around 1909 thru the 1940 was when most of these symbols were formed or contructed. They were there not so much to regale the southern conquest but to reinforce the Jim Crow mindset that was prevalent at the time

    • SoCalGal20

I didn’t know anything about this man. From Wiki:

As a politician, Smalls authored state legislation providing for South Carolina to have the first free and compulsory public school system in the United States. He founded the Republican Party of South Carolina.

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Smalls

      • PickyPecker

Yup. ‘Reconstruction’ post-Cival war was actually considered successful. There were many blacks serving in souther state legislatures, etc.
The rise of the ‘white right’ saw white men in those same positions wearing hoods at secret events…and moved against what had been accomplished during reconstruction. Very sad and should not have been allowed to happen. yet, there it is.

        • SoCalGal20

Can you imagine if Reconstruction had been allowed to continue? We’d be in a much better place now, I think.

        • UrsusArctos

Don’t forget, the North was complicit in it as well. After the fight to preserve the Union they allowed white supremacy to re-arise because of home grown commercial and political interests. Yes, the south did it. The north stood by for 80 years.

          • BobSF_94117

And don’t discount Northern racism as another reason they allowed Reconstruction to falter and fail.

If conservative Southerners had any brains, they’d be LIVID about this. The return to racist cronyism set development back in the South by a century and a half.

          • stuckinthewoods

After the war was the time of “carpetbaggers and scalawags” who stood to profit from the ruins. Their interest in cheap labor was essentially identical with the earlier slave owners’. An effective re-enslavement ensued.

NECN is reporting 10 arrests. In a crowd of 20,000+ not bad for a gathering of this nature. I will point out that the Women’s March had zero arrests.

    • John Ruff

Huh? The women’s march had many arrests.

      • SoCalGal20

        Huh? No there weren’t.

D.C. police said they had no reports of arrests as of 6 p.m. on Saturday, a stark contrast to Friday’s anti-Trump protest that saw 230 people arrested, the windows of businesses smashed and a limo torched. Witnesses said self-described anarchists were behind some of Friday’s violence.

Our side needs to toughen up and FORCE the Nazis out of public places, by any means necessary and available. Peacefully chanting and shouting at nazis doesn’t do any real good, it just makes our side feel good for a little bit while the nazis plan their next terrorist attack.

    • Gustav2

Peaceful folks did the job today.

      • MonochromeMouse

No they didn’t, all they did was make themselves feel good and have a good image for PR purposes, that’s all. The nazi rally still happened, all we did was outnumber them, they need to be shut down completely.

        • Gustav2

          Yes, argue with success.

          • MonochromeMouse

            What success?

          • Gustav2

If you can’t see the success, we can’t continue this conversation.

          • MonochromeMouse

We’ve always vastly outnumbered the nazis. They have always been an extreme fringe minority. The difference now is they feel bold enough to go out in public without a mask or hood, that means they are winning.

          • Gustav2

They didn’t win today, now move along.

          • MonochromeMouse

They didn’t win but they also didn’t lose. Today was a meaningless stalemate and all we will get are stalemates until everyone starts acting like Antifa and treats the nazis like the virus they are.

          • Gustav2

I’m sorry you are upset no one died.

          • MonochromeMouse

The nazis aren’t afraid to hurt people, why should our side be. And you should note, nowhere in any of my posts did I say someone should have been killed, what I support is beating the absolute shit out of nazis whenever they start spewing their bullshit in public.

          • Gustav2

Right, do exactly what they want. They are only a few traveling around the country trying to get into a fight to prove their manhood. It is a street gang initiation. Large peaceful crowds show what snowflakes they are.

          • OdieDenCO

they have a right to spew their bullshit. this is what America is all about. We have a right to shout them down but not touch them.

          • MonochromeMouse

And that’s why America has such a problem with hate groups. Every other first-world country has some degree of hate speech laws on the books and doesn’t allow nazis to organize or if they do they are severely limited. We let them march down the fucking street with fucking swastika flags.

          • OdieDenCO

you speak for all of America,do you? being afraid of letting someone express their beliefs is what gives the nazis power. let them rant. let them rave. trying to suppress something only makes it grow in the dark.

          • BobSF_94117

It’s interesting. In the 1960s the FBI had to infiltrate civil rights groups to insert agitators who would incite violence and turn public opinion against the demonstrators. Now we do it for them. Progress. Yay…

          • Ken M

Do you believe they had a win or a loss last weekend when Heather was killed? Which ever way you answer, please explain your logic for it.

          • MonochromeMouse

We won because our side, with the help of the state, chased the nazis out. We shut down their rally because antifa showed up and started beating nazi ass. Remember the crying nazi we were all laughing about the other day? He was crying because he thought antifa and Chelsea Manning were going to kill him.

          • Ken M

You give “them” too much credit by referring to them in the collective. As you mentioned above, they are, and always have been, a fringe element. Now they can’t even agree on a name between themselves. The “Nazis” themselves are divided. Their power is divided After this past week, even their methods of communication are divided. They are not “the Nazis” any more then they all claim to be KKK. Don’t give them credit where it isn’t do.

          • OdieDenCO

your argument is specious. the mere fact you are saying the statement was meaningless say it has meaning that has affected you and most likely millions of others.

        • Ken M

Say what you want, but the sheer power of numbers showed it’s power today. The PRIDE message gets out, by doing our best to let them look like the fools. Imagine, people standing in favor of the gays.

    • AJ Drew

There is a peaceful solution and we saw it in Boston today: vastly outnumber them.

      • MonochromeMouse

There is no peaceful solution to nazis. Their very existence is an act of violence against a peaceful society.

        • RoFaWh

Just as Bannon should have long ago been tried on charges of conspiring to overthrow the Constitution.

Throw a few of ’em in the pokey under durance vile and frighten the wits out of the rest of them.

Bannon is like a toxin, and it should be neither a surprise nor a cause for complaint when the body politic has a strong immune reaction.

[I am using “Bannon” as a place holder for a long list of names, including all known televangelist-grifters, including Jim Bakker and many other names familiar to the JMG commentariat.]

    • Ken M

They need to be “respected” as long they have a permit. In the case today, 12-2. Before and after, abiding by laws will keep us out of trouble. A peaceful message, with large numbers, will force their violence and weaken them further in the eyes of society. I hope next time they come in hoods. Now that would make a video.

      • MonochromeMouse

They won’t wear hoods until they start getting their asses kicked or until their side has some casualties. The hoods are about hiding who they are so no one can get revenge on them after.

        • Ken M

Or until more of their identities are exposed on the internet. have we won..no, Are we winning, yes. There will always be hatred, there needn’t be Nazis to have it. One group at a time.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

Nope. Ends do not justify the means.

      • MonochromeMouse

So the Allied powers were the bad guys in WWII?

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

We are not yet in an actual war with these wannabe nazis.

          • MonochromeMouse

So what makes violence in a war “acceptable” is the fact that the president said so? That’s basically your argument. We are at war with the nazis, the fact that they feel confident enough to exist in public without hiding their identity is an act of war against peaceful civilization.

    • SoCalGal20

Or, you know, we outnumber them 100 to 1 and simply overwhelm them with numbers. No violence necessary and they go back to their safe safe spaces to cry about how mean we are for expressing out first amendment rights of free speech and assembly.

    • bkmn

They want to provoke a response. Peaceful protests along with shear numbers sends the message they don’t want to hear. They are not in the majority and they are not strong.

    • The_Wretched

Uh, being outnumbered by the decent folk is enough to cow and scare the racists. The story of the top of the page is exactly that. Violence just means crackdowns. Non-violent protest is what is successful.

      cf. all of protest history.

Violence only works in a war context or if you can actually get to the ruling family (oligarchs these days) and massacre all of them. That’s the rare event and it’s not likely to work.

  • SoCalGal20

This one wins the day so far. A+ Boston protesters.

  • greenmanTN

Fuck you with this “alt-left” bullshit. “Alt-Right” is an umbrella term, invented by RWNJs to disguise their true aims. It’s just a softer, gentler term for hardcore racists, KKK members, Nazis, white nationalists, etc. You MIGHT have a point if the opposition was equally hard-core left, but that isn’t the case.

It’s just regular people who don’t want to see our country taken over by fucking racists, homophobes, and Nazis! They aren’t alt anything, just people who don’t want to let this hate hootenanny pass as if it’s OK. It isn’t OK. It will never be OK, and it isn’t alt anything to stand up and say so! It’s basic human dignity, standing up to the grotesque far right, who are momentarily empowered by Trump’s encouragement.

    • Jerry Kott

Agree. It is important to remember that White Supremacy is a very broad term and I believe that the numbers are higher than suspected. The extreme right -KKK, nazi should be paid attention to because they are hyper bitter . As shown in the reports from C’ville, they are in every walk of life. I remember reading that the FBI was alarmed by the numbers in Law Enforcement. Where they can act out with immunity.

      • greenmanTN

I naively thought we were past this, except for the very fringe. It’s disheartening to see these young frat/dude/bros showing up to march for this idiocy. “Gosh, Chad, I am so sorry you’ve had to face such oppression!” (Give me a break.)

It’s entertaining to watch them freak out when they are identified though. “I’m not a racist!” But you traveled hundreds of miles to participate in a march along with KKK members and Nazis?

“I was just there as a joke!” Yeah, because racism, homophobia, and genocide is a real knee-slapper. This might be a shock to you, but when internet trolls show themselves in real life you don’t get to hide behind a screen name anymore and you just might get your ass handed to you. Did someone force you to take part in this? No, so STFU.

        • Jerry Kott

Hate was being put on a pedestal, like a badge of Courage of sorts- being normalized. Hate has a price. White Privilege was a given

  • 2patricius2

Tens of thousands of people against free speech? No, rallying against white supremacists. And it didn’t look to me like the anti-fascist demonstrators were anywhere near the small cluster of fascists in the middle of the park.

  • I know a number of people who I consider fairly racist. Not one of them would be within miles of a white supremacist rally. These people are a problem but they are a small minority. I think that’s why it’s important that people who are against this, including Republicans, show up in large numbers to make that clear. The GOP for some reason is scared shitless of this crowd. They ought to be more afraid of the rest of us.

    • Jerry Kott

The squeaky wheel gets the most oil? I agree that the numbers of people who are white supremacist is high but I would say that they would never identify themselves as so. They get under the radar because they surround themselves with themselves

    • ultragreen

A small minority? I wonder. In one poll, the majority of Republicans said it was okay to delay the next election if it would help Donald Trump. This implies that the majority of Republicans are fascists.

      • You are comparing two different questions and assuming everyone for one is for the other.

Yes, most Republicans would favor canceling the election because right wing media (radio, before Fox even existed was doing this) telling them that Democrats have been engaging in massive voter fraud in every election since the 1930s. They believe this and the MSM has let most of it go unchallenged. So of course they think they need to do something about a problem they’ve been hearing about for forty years, even though it hardly exists at all.

That’s not the same thing as showing up waving Nazi flags.

        • ultragreen

I’m much more worried about the people who think it’s a cool thing to delay democratic elections than the little boys who run around in parks waving Nazi flags.

    • Skokieguy [Larry]

Some Nazi was screaming online that the libs tricked them and because they marched with torches, the FBI now can identify them all. I suspect we may see them returning to hoods and midnight attacks.

However if they are so ‘proud’ of their white supremeness, why be afraid to show your face?

      • boatboy_srq

They’re also screeching that the cops didn’t “protect” them (i.e. stand shoulder to shoulder with them to keep them safe from Those Other People). So there’s a double dose: LEOs not standing with them, and cameras showcasing the bigots’ out-and-proud antics.

Just a few weeks ago, Michael Che said in more than one interview that Boston is the most racist city in America. What a maroon.
