TEXAS: “Atheism Causes Poverty” Former San Antonio Mayor Files For Unemployment After Losing Election

The San Antonio Express-News reports:

Mayor Ivy Taylor, soon after she lost her June runoff, filed a claim for unemployment benefits from the city of San Antonio through the Texas Workforce Commission, sources said. The city contacted Taylor after she filed the claim, the sources said, and recommended that she withdraw it because it would otherwise be rejected. Taylor tried, they said, but the Texas Workforce Commission would not allow the claim to be withdrawn. According to the Unemployment Compensation Act in the state’s Labor Code, elected officials do not qualify for unemployment benefits.

Taylor earned national ridicule earlier this year when she declared that the poor are “broken people” because they don’t “have a relationship with their creator.” (Tipped by JMG reader BK)

  • Tawreos

I swear I am not laughing about her misfortune, but about something else entirely.

    • Todd20036

How about the fact that we can see the slip of miss prim-and-proper

      • LatrinaDiBucca

        And it’s a pink slip.

        • FAEN

          HA!

    • Hanwi

So if she’s still unemployed does that mean she doesn’t have any marketable skills other than suckling the government teat? Sounds about right….

      • Lizard

Maybe Jason Chaffetz could get her hooked up with Faux News. Would be fitting.

        • Hanwi

Not nearly blonde enough, her complexion is a bit off for faux news.

        • FAEN

She’d have to be white, blond and willing to show a lot of leg for that to happen.

        • Todd20036

No way. She’s too blackety black.
Not even black quislings can make it onto Fox

          • Oh’behr in Minnesota

Which is actually quite pathetic. Though they are quislings.

      • Andymac3

I’m sure she can start her own religion, there’s always a grifting angle to be had from religion.

      • Nowhereman

I’ll bet she sneers at the grocery store when she sees people shopping with food stamps.

  • bkmn

She has to be in the running to be one of the worst people on earth.

    • Lizard

Now that’s a tough election right now. She’s gonna get slaughtered by the West Wing.

    • Todd20036

Maybe, but given the bucket of crap in the Whitey House, she’s got serious competition

  • Hanwi

Ahhhh, pardon me while I bask in the sweet, sweet sunlight of irony….I should apply sunscreen so this atheist doesn’t get burned πŸ˜‰

  • Tulle Christensen

I see it more as being fired with cause, not being laid off

    • Todd20036

If that’s the case she cannot get unemployment

    • jerry

As far as I know, every state prevents elected officials from filing unemployment claims…whether they’re voted out, quit, or otherwise removed from office.

Under [Canadian] House of Commons rules, members of Parliament are eligible for a lump sum payment equal to six months’ salary. And the severance pay is awarded whether the politician was defeated in a campaign β€” or voluntarily chose not to seek re-election.

The annual pay for an MP is now set at $167,400, which means an outgoing member would receive a golden handshake of $83,700.

The most wonderful person I’ve ever known and truly the only person I’ve ever known who lived a lifetime filled with love and compassion as a christian, was my grandmother. She died penniless, with few possessions, but as rich as a Queen in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew her.

    • Todd20036

Whereas Trump, for all of his money, is about the most atheist president I’ve ever seen.
His “god” is money and power. He’s certainly “Christian” only because it’s a means to an end.

      • Lizard

I’m not tribal, so I don’t really care, but…it’s disappointing that Trump is, so far, our most atheist president.

Of course, he only got elected by pretending to be Christian and pandering to evangelicals. It’s a weird political gray area.

        • Todd20036

          Agreed.

        • Nowhereman

We had a neighbor who went to church every Sunday and Wednesday yet was one of the most down to earth people you would ever meet.
It was only after her death people found out about all the different people she had helped over the years with words, food etc.
When asked why she never talked about it, her daughter said that her mom felt being a good Christian and helping others wasn’t something that needed to be bragged about.
Shame there aren’t more like her and your grandmother in the world.

      • AJ Drew

I truly believe that there are many many more folks exactly like that then we will ever know about. They feel no need to trumpet it.

My Grandfather was a minister. He was a friend to all, including the black community. My mother tells stories of being the only white children in a congregation of black worshipers. He was a good man, and his only fault was giving what little he had to others at the expense of his own family. Not all those who claim to be Christian are bad people. Many do show the love that was commanded by Jesus. I have never felt rejected by God for being gay, but rather, accepted as this is how I was made – despite what many claiming to be Christian would say.

      • UrsusArctos

Funny how real Xians do as Christ commanded. My grandfather was also a pastor (Pentecostal, even). He believed in living as Xian, not telling everyone he was and damning those who fell “short” of some arbitrary mark.
That’s where I learned to watch the actions to separate out the Christians from the church goers.

      • Mark

        You’re very fortunate Rex!!

    • Robincho

You woulda loved my gram. It was she who said, “Life is like a roll of toiletpaper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.” At 14, I introduced her to my first real boyfriend. She invited us in, sat us down, and gave us each a Mountain Dew, which came in bottles back then. The b.f., whose family wasn’t cool like mine, started kinda freaking out about being gay, and she grabbed him by the shoulder and said, “Bloom where you’re planted, young man, bloom where you’re planted.”

We lost her at 99, in 1986. She grew the most fabulous rhubarb, and in her backyard was the largest oak tree in Weld County, Colorado…

      • GayOldLady

Mine was the same. She volunteered at the nursing home for decades, often taking care of people younger than herself in later years. She was very religious and that made me kind of afraid of her since I am not.

I came out to my parents when I was 17, but they didn’t tell anyone else. It felt like they thought it was a dirty secret, though they were otherwise very accepting.

On a trip back to TN with my then partner I ended up alone with her in a car. Out of nowhere she said “I’m glad you two found each other. I just want you to be happy.”

      • GayOldLady

Similar coming out experience with my grandmother. Amazing how love conquers all.

I’ve been poor and working poor most of my life. It had nothing to do with being an atheist and everything to do with cheapskate business owners who would only pay the least amount possible.
