Hate Groups Are Furious That CNN Published The SPLC’s Hate Groups Map After Charlottesville Terror Attack

Via press release from the Liberty Counsel:

CNN has published a fake news article, “Here are all the active hate groups where you live,” that recklessly lists pro-family organizations, including Liberty Counsel, as active “hate groups” throughout the nation.

Liberty Counsel has sent a demand letter to CNN regarding this article that cites the discredited Southern Poverty Center Law (SPLC), a reckless organization that falsely labels nonviolent people and organizations as “haters” or “hate groups.”

“I am shocked that CNN would publish such a false report on the heels of the Charlottesville tragedy,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel.

“To lump peaceful Christian organizations, which condemn violence and racism, in with the KKK, Neo-Nazis, and white supremacists is offensive. This is the epitome of fake news and is why people no longer trust the media,” said Staver.

She told the director, Robert Aldrich, to see if Davis wanted to do the part. Wow. I knew there was something about Crawford that I always liked.

Six months in a regime with the GOP controlling the House, Senate and White House –
    What have they accomplished?
    No major legislation passed
Weakened protections for land, air and water – leaving future generations to deal with the pollution
Destabilized the insurance market – driving up costs for everyone
Empowered hate groups – leaving the country weaker
Working now to lower taxes – which will drive up the deficit greatly while leaving the most vulnerable at great risk
Ignoring Russian interference in our electoral process – leaving the door open for more of the same

It is time for Democrats to stop being silent and playing nice – call a spade, a spade. Democrats work to fix what is wrong in America. Republicans want to tear everything down.

The local NBC-afiliate aired the map and then the pretty blonde, who always makes a point of noting that she’s Catholic, commented that, “they never mention that it was a far-left terrorist that shot up the Family Research Council’s offices in Washington.” She then proceeded to explain that the FRC was a religious organization that the SPLC had “mistakenly” labeled as a hate group. It really felt like a paid advertisement.

Though he certainly planned on doing more shooting, the attacker only fired three shots while wrestling with the security guard (who was hit in the arm by one of the shots) and was subdued by other building staff.

      “Shot up”. Not so much.

      • Schlukitz

Despite the fact that this incident happened some five years ago, they are still trotting it out at every available opportunity to do so and as if it just happened yesterday. And what about all the instances of gay violence that has been perpetrated against the Religious Reich since then?

Oh…there hasn’t been any other instance of violence against them? Guess that’s why they have to keep trotting out this one. It’s all they’ve got.

Meanwhile, not one incident of violence against LGBT people, in many instances committed by religious fanatics, has ever been mentioned by them although there have been hundreds, perhaps thousands of such incidents, hypocrites that they are.

“The motivations behind attacks against LGBT people “have always been, and continue to be, [about] seemingly religious rhetoric,” says says Kaila Story, a professor of women’s and gender studies at University of Louisville.”

        • Ken M

We need some good “And 5 years ago today News” regarding the life of Trump. Let’s compare and they can say, “oh, that was so long ago.”

        • Friday

And despite the fact that even that story of course, has an odor to it since their claims about the guy don’t really wash with the fact all he did for ‘gay activism’ was sign a list of volunteers at an LGBT center, *after* going all the way to Washington with guns… The whole thing doesn’t really make sense, except at most as some solitary crazy, even then more likely provoked by the FRC’s hate-rhetoric than something as neutral as the SPLC pointing it out.

Of course calling an anti-Hillary and anti-Democratic troll a ‘liberal Democrat’ as they do doesn’t square with the facts at *all,* but it shows how thin their projections are when that’s *all they have got* when they try to flip the narrative when LGBT people and others are killed every week by Christianist haters they justify and incite.

Hate extends beyond the KKK, Nazis, and white supremacists.
    Ask us, we know.

    • Jerry Kott

In many cases, LGBT folks don’t show up on their documented radar for Hate. It is just a Given to hate us. It is just the natural thing to do.

      • Hate without a precipitating injury is not a natural thing to feel. Bigotry is a character disorder IMO.

        • Jerry Kott

I am paraphrasing here “Hate is like acid. It not only mars where it is spread but it destroys the vessel that contains it”. Hate does have a price. I walk with Hate merchants, and judging by the quality of the wretched lives they live, they pay a price for their existence. However they are so blind that can’t see the forest for the trees. The sad matter is that they believe that Compassion is a weakness.

      • Reality.Bites

I don’t get it either, but Waarki’s posting history clearly shows them as on the good side.

    • Saw a Jewish survivor’s arm in one of my night classes. She was a survivor of Auschwitz. Her father was a Polish Jewish doctor and she helped him with surgeries etc. She was about 16 or17 years of age. One day, she came home to find all her family had been taken to the local train station. She stayed for a couple of days hidden in the house. Then, the Polish resistance came for her. They knew she would be useful with her exposure to basic medicine. They told her that as soon as she was no longer useful, they would kill her. On a boat trip with a Polish fighter, he tied up the boat; walked a few yards and was blown up by a land mine. She was captured, but It was right at the end of the war so she only spent a “limited time at Auschwitz.’ (Any time spent there was hell on earth). The camp was liberated within months of her arrival.
It was because of seeing those numbers that my wife and I (non-Jews) made a trip to Auschwitz some twenty years later. Evidently, Kushner’s grandmother or grandfather was also a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp. How can Ivanka and Jared still remain in the W.H? They have enough money!

      • Câl

The problem with some people is that they are addicted to money, they look at you all confused when you say they have enough.

There was a TV show here in the UK some time ago with elderly British celebrities visiting other countries to see how life is for the older generation. One segment showed a woman with a camp tattoo interviewed by Miriam Margolyes (filmed just before the election). As one Jew to another, Miriam assumed the older woman would be anti-trump but when asked about the up-coming election, she burst into tears at how terrible it would be if “that woman” got in and thought trump was not only the better candidate but the best the GOP had to offer. Miriam could not understand how the memory of her childhood had been essentially erased by her later wealth and was really shaken by the encounter. I wonder what that voter thinks now?

  • Silver Badger

The SPLC needs to take the offensive on this. Their criteria for defining a hate group needs to be widely publicized. They they are attacked for telling the truth, they need to answer with a point by point explanation why a particular group has been designated a hate group. The truth can not set anyone free unless everyone knows it.

  • rednekokie

It’s amazing how annoyed hate groups become when someone points them out as a hate group. They really then, get actually hateful.
Especially religious hate groups such as this one.

    • bambinoitaliano

Snowflakes. You point and they melt.

  • Clive Johnson

Sounds like it’s time for a donation to the SPLC.

  • Dramphooey

The Liberty Counsel is clearly an anti-taxpayer hate group.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Oh honey, why don’t you untwist your panties and sue CNN? I’m sure it will go well.

  • TampaZeke

I will say that CNN is hypocritical if they are going to publish that list of hate groups while having leaders of those same groups on their shows and treating them as if their positions are legitimate.

As much as they are decrying “both-sides are to blame” they certainly promote the idea that “both sides have legitimate arguments”, which is equally as bad!

    • Schlukitz

    • Lizard

I would feel a lot better about them bringing on these leaders if they actually challenged them by asking them hard questions and citing facts where they’re wrong. But nooooo…it’s always, “How do you feel about this?” and listening attentively, and no one ever points out that it’s hateful rhetoric. Grr.

      • TampaZeke

        That would be called “journalism”.

        • Ninja0980

          Something they never do.
I still remember all the glowing articles written about the bigots in our NY papers during the battle for marriage equality when these monsters were comparing us to pedophiles and terrorists and spouting bible verses about how we should be killed.
          Makes me sick.

      • Schlukitz

I have no doubt that were Hitler still alive, they would have him on to air his views on why Jews, Gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals and mentally deficient people should be gassed as though it were a legitimate argument that needs to be heard….and considered.

But, but… those are the only types of families that COUNT! And the fact that we as a country even LET any other types of families exist is an affront to the rights of those TRUE, WORTHWHILE families…

We live in a time of false equivalents . Sometimes there is one side to a story and just one because an opposing view expresses doesn’t make it legitimate. Sometimes thing are just plain wrong. They is no safe zone between Love and Hate. The difference between a “reason” and an “excuse” has been blurred. In many cases, any redemption of Hate doesn’t destroy it’s path.

au contraire, that was sneaky and opportunistic of you, Mat Staver, and don’t you dare lie to the public.
For good reasons, your group, The Liberty Counsel, is a Southern Poverty Law Center designated hate group and one of the most bigoted antigay hate groups in the United States. Your religious based hate group uses the courts to spread lies to demonize the LGBTQ community in hope the courts will strip away our legal rights and relegate gay folks as 2nd class citizens.
Fortunately, the Liberty Counsel looses almost every single case Mat Staver’s hate group files in court.

If I am not mistaken, The SPLC labeled Family Research Center and Liberty Counsel as Hate Groups because of their demonstrably provable and repeated lying about LGBTS and other groups that they target. The SPLC has many criteria by which they decide a group is a Hate Group. They never labeled them a Hate Group because of violence which is just another lie from Family Research Center and Liberty Counsel.

  • Roadrash548

Mark Potek, when appearing on cable news representing the SPLC, has always addressed the false claims made by these well funded, politically connected, fundamentalist Christian, designated hate groups by having to always patiently explain why these groups qualify for this list.
It is not because they are Christian, or even religious for that matter. It is also not because they promote so-called “traditional family values” as they ubiquitously claim while wallowing in their victimhood.
They are on the list because they have continually and consistently propagated hateful, discredited and debunked, negative stereotypes about the LGBT community and almost all (being 501c3 “non-profits”) have raised or do raise funds by calling for the curtailing of any and all hard won LGBT rights.
The intolerance and bigotry displayed by these un-Christian Christian groups is divisive, ignorant, immoral, and wrong.
And yes, perhaps they are far less violent than the Alt-Right we saw in Charlottesville, however their particular hate for all things LGBT runs just as deep.

The only organizations that have discredited the SPLC are the ones SPLC cited as hate groups. FRC is indeed a hate group since hate is all they spew. They support and voted for a man who is among the most vile, hateful people on the planet and who has a history of inciting people to violence. So FRC, not interested in hearing any of your BS and denial about your status with the SPLC. You can all go F**k yourselves and then go straight to hell where you belong.
