SPAIN: Barcelona Hit In Likely Terror Attack [VIDEO]

The Telegraph reports:

At least two people have reportedly been killed and several others are injured after a suspected terrorist crashed into a crowd of people on a pavement in a popular tourist area of Barcelona. There are also reports of a live hostage incident at a Turkish restaurant near the scene.

The vehicle hit pedestrians in Las Ramblas, a busy tree-lined promenade in the centre of the city, the Ministry of the Interior said. Barcelona police have said they believe that the attack is terror-related. “Huge collision on Las Ramblas in Barcelona by an individual driving a van, many injuries,” a statement from Catalan police added.

The first video below is live.

I’m waiting for chump’s statement blaming both sides !

    • The_Wretched

Or how the alt-tourists brought the violence in the first place.

      • boobert

        Did they have a permit?

      • Chris Baker

If they hadn’t been on the sidewalk,….

I’m sure he’ll be more measured than that, dontcha think? /s

    • TimCA

I’m sure he’ll wait for all the facts to be known before commenting. If our POTUS is known for just two things, it’s his unwavering commitment to accuracy and aversion to impetuousness.

Violently attacking the van with their bodies.

    • Stogiebear

Well, of course. Muslims attacking pre-Mexicans. Bad people on both sides.

  • FAEN

And in 3 2 1…..Cheeto will use this as yet another reason to praise Nazi’s.

  • Lazycrockett

A weakened leadership in America that refuses to be on the global stage only encourages these attacks.

    • Todd20036

      That’s the real message here.

  • TK

Car into a crowd? Can’t wait to hear Trump call it a terror attack after twisting himself over what to call it here.

    • Publius

Joe called it a likely terror attack…

    • Do Something Nice

The police are calling it a likely terror attack.

    • bambinoitaliano

It’s only terrorism if the skin color and religion affiliation are not white and Christian.

  • Do Something Nice

    Who cares what Trump says?

    • vorpal 😼

      Trump.
At this point, probably nobody else.

    • Rebecca Gardner

Trump will probably say if we build a wall we’ll be safe from this. The only Spanish speaking people are in Mexico right?

      grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

      • unsavedheathen

Well, he’s in good company since at least one-third of the US doesn’t understand that there is a country in Europe known as Spain and that it is an entirely separate entity from Mexico.

  • Tawreos

Trump will be telling us this is why Muslims shouldn’t be allowed in the country, after trying to convince us that when white racist does it it is just an accident.

  • Do Something Nice

All of the train stations have been shut down.

  • Rebecca Gardner

Can’t take it anymore. The entire world has gone mad. Now Barcelona, one of my favorite cities full of such beautiful people. I can’t. I just can’t. I’m at a loss for words. What is happening? Why is everything such a pile of shit?

    • ChrisInKansas

      Religion.

    • another_steve

“Everything” is not a pile of shit. There’s a lot of shit in the world, but not everything is shit.

Most human beings on Planet Earth are good and loving people.

      • Tawreos

Very true. If only being kind to other human beings was worth the breaking news tags.

        • another_steve

          Horror sells.

          Kindness does not.

      • Rebecca Gardner

True, but the ones with the keys to the kingdom are all assholes. They will be sure to kill all the good and loving people before they let anyone in.

        • another_steve

The civilized world has not yet found a way to cut off the blood supply to ISIS and other hate groups – like the Nazis and KKK here in the states. We need to find a way.

I’m in favor of a concerted world effort to rid the internet and all social media of terrorist propaganda.

A daunting task, but imo the first step to curbing the terror.

          • PickyPecker

I thought Melania was already on that.

  • MaryJOGrady

One of my closest friends lives close to the area that was attacked. He is 80 now and survived the Franco Era as a gay man. I await news that he is at home and safe. (He likes to say that he sleeps every night in the bed he was born in.)

    • Do Something Nice

Most locals avoid the tourist crowds in August. Hopefully your friend is OK.

      • MaryJOGrady

I know, but there is a big food market nearby. I hope he was already all stocked up on groceries.

    • FAEN

I hope he’s well. Please let us know.

I will. I am still waiting for news.

      • MaryJOGrady

I just got through on the phone, by some miracle. (Lines are jammed.) My dear Antonio is fine and about to have a bite of supper.

        • FAEN

So happy to hear that. Sens our best to him 😊.

  • Leo

Reading now they haven’t found the second van yet :/

  • another_steve

Steve Bannon and Co. are salivating. Were this to happen in the US, no more wall-to-wall coverage of Charlottesville. No more wall-to-wall re Russiagate.

    Salivating.

    • Todd20036

True, but only if the driver of the van wasn’t white.

    • ChrisInKansas

You have to wonder just why it doesn’t happen in the US. Are there many of these that were stopped that we don’t know about?

      • another_steve

        Great questions, Chris.

I think it’s pretty obvious that here in the states there’s very sophisticated below-the-radar stuff going on, orchestrated by our intelligence agencies. Stuff that has been preventing major terrorist acts here on a weekly or monthly basis.

        There’s no other explanation imo.

      • The_Wretched

Islamic Terrorism needs someone to do the terrorism. Muslims, as a whole, are ~ 1% of the population or less. They are in higher concentrations in certain geographies but really, not many of them. The fraction of that population that is both motivated and capable of carrying out terror attacks is even smaller still. AND they are a beset minority, they don’t have as much freedom to deviate from the norm.

I think back to the admin of Cheney – they had news stories of the Lackawanna 6 and other ‘islamic terrorists’. Most couldn’t figure out how to get bomb making supplies or even travel cross country. The FEDs did the heaving lifting in sting operations and netted literal idiots.

        • another_steve

Not clear what you mean by “not many of them.” Are you referring there solely to the US?

“As of 2010, Christianity was by far the world’s largest religion, with an estimated 2.2 billion adherents, nearly a third (31 percent) of all 6.9 billion people on Earth,” the Pew report says. “Islam was second, with 1.6 billion adherents, or 23 percent of the global population.”

          http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/04/02/397042004/muslim-population-will-surpass-christians-this-century-pew-says

N.B.: 23 percent of the global population.

          • The_Wretched

Demographically, there are not many muslims and islamic terrorists in the US. It’s sort of hard to get here from the middle east and by EU based terror cells. The “terror cells” we have had here are largely incompetent (except the 9/11 group).

World population is irrelevant until site to site teleportation becomes a thing.

      • zhera

Why would they do anything when the pResident is doing all the work for them?

  • Adam Schmidt

Anyone remember last week when we were playing at brinkmanship with North Korea to see if we could have a nuclear war?

It took a terrorist attack by an actual Nazi to push that one off the front page and the national consciousness. And what’s going to happen when Kim Jong Un fires off another rocket or three in our general direction? Because I don’t think Trump has gotten better at foreign relations since last week.

I’m concerned for these folks in Barcelona and hope that this resolves with a minimum of people hurt or killed, but I also am hoping Trump doesn’t start WWIII because his polls are down.

    • Tawreos

We don’t hear much about Russia and collusion much anymore either.

      • Cackalaquiano

I really do think the investigation is still proceeding. Being out of the spotlight a while might be a good thing. It’ll come back to the fore though.

        • Adam Schmidt

Agreed. Mueller and his team are busy and when they do come out with their findings, I’m sure it’ll be huge.

    • unsavedheathen

i know why people are saying it but I can tell you with a great deal of confidence the people of Spain aren’t waiting for words of fucking consolation from your President.

    • Silver Badger

I don’t believe that you will find many on JMG who will acknowledge trump as their president. He certainly isn’t my president.

      • Treant

Waiddasec! Trump thinks he’s president? That’s so cute!

      • Chris Baker

It’s still awkward for me to refer to Trump as ‘the President.”

    • Tatonka

Of course not. We’re all kind of broken right now. Thanks for the reminder of what matters.

    • Do Something Nice

Few words of concern and 50 comments discussing Trump.

American values at work. We are the center of the world. Or something.

      • barrixines

It’s understandable we relate things back to our own situations – I do it as much as anyone else. I’m just on edge right now.

        • Do Something Nice

Yes, except for the reading issues. The fucking headline on Joe’s post says likely terror attack and yet half the comments here are speculating how long before Trump says its a terror attack.

          • The_Wretched

The context is relevant here – Trump just refused to call a similar act of terrorism in the US in Charlottesville terrorism. It’s a point about Trump’s narcississm/stupidity/hypocracy rather than US citizens being only concerned about US concerns. Had this Barcelona attack happened on another day, there woudn’t be the many comments (including mine) about Trump being quick to call it Islamic Terrorism.

          • Do Something Nice

Maybe. But Trump’s narcissism is old news. People died and the political impact of this can go beyond anything Trump ever says.

      • Silver Badger

We are numb from the constant barrage of outrage to what the trump administration has submitted our country too. One wonders, did you count the words of concern sent to Virginia from Barcelona concerning our terrorist attack?

        • Do Something Nice

False equivalency. But what happened in Charlottesville was well covered here in Barcelona. And nobody compared it to right-wing politics here.

          • Silver Badger

So you’re saying Barcelona is Nazi friendly? As one who is tired of the constant American bashing, I observe that up on your high horse, you didn’t even get the name of the Virginia town right.

          • Do Something Nice

Have a good day. I can’t converse with idiots today.

          • Silver Badger

      • bambinoitaliano

You do know JMG is primary an American site right? While the site has lots of non US members, the primary political talking point is heavily on US politics. Yes. US is a center of the world for its military, political and economy power. Many issues in one way or another is link to US no matter where it’s happening. Considering the nation is facing a political meltdown, the impact will not be isolated to the US only rather the entire world.

      • June Gordon

Yes, because sending “thoughts and prayers” is so useful.

  • Marty Hodas

Again?????? Something MUST be done. Last week they rammed a car into a group of soldiers in France. In the last few weeks they slaughtered well over 100 innocent people in Nigeria. Forget about what they do in their own countries. In the last 30 days, how many innocent civilians have been killed by islamic extremists? 200? 300? more? There are attacks in Africa, Europe, Asia, and of course the Middle East. How many people have to die before the world does something about this?

    • Do Something Nice

      ^troll alert.

    • Tawreos

I have yet to see anyone give a nationality or even a description of the attacker(s). Where are you getting your information?

      • Marty Hodas

Well, they were all islamic terrorists. Just in the last month they have perpetrated dozens and dozens of terror attacks and hundreds of innocent civilians have been killed as a result. Like Trump mentioned during the campaign, most islamic terrorist attacks don’t make the news anymore.

    • barrixines

I’ve asked you many times before to tell us exactly what should be done. You decline to answer.

      • zhera

        You’re right. Block it is.

      Who are ‘they’?

      • Marty Hodas

        Islamic terrorists.

        • zhera

And you have confirmation on this being an islamist terrorist attack?

Even if you have, ‘they’ are not a homogenous group. The only thing common for ‘them’ is religion. But you’re not an islamophobe, right? And you’re CERTAINLY not ignoring terroism from non-islamists, right?

          • Marty Hodas

Terrorism from non-islamists is so infrequent compared to the huge number of islamist terrorist attacks. There are multiple islamic terrorist attacks every single day.

          • Reality.Bites

Blocked after first post. We don’t need to debate Nazis. We need to destroy them.

    • Tomcat

And where was your post about the white supremacist driving into a crowd in America? Where was your outrage then?

      • Marty Hodas

The attack in Charlottesville was an outrage, and we all recognize it as such. But many Americans, particularly on the left, don’t seem to care about the hundreds and hundreds of innocent civilians killed by islamic terrorists. Why is that? Is it because Heather Heyer was a middle class, educated white person?

Except by President Donald Jizzwhistler Trump when it’s done by a Nazi white supremacist in America and Americans are the victims. Then it’s “violence on both sides,” with the victims somehow at least equally to blame for being injured or killed.

Not as important as the injured and dead, but this: I’m lolling about with the TV on. A news break on ABC. The announcer says, “there has been a terrorist attack on Lawz Raamblawz, the Fifth Avenue of Barcelona.” Well, WRONG! Passeig de la Gracia is the “Fifth Avenue” of Barcelona. That’s where you find the store fronts for Adolfo, the Casa Batilló, La Pedrera, Bulevard Rosa, Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel, Santa Eulalia, Hotel Majestic (nice big beds you have to climb out of). And unlike Fifth Avenue, Passeig de la Gracia is beautiful, sunny, open and a stunning experience. Fifth Avenue? Well, it is dark, grimy and lined with overbearing skyscrapers, including the Darth Vader-style of architecture of Trump Tower.

News anchors need to get out more. Grrrr .. . 🙁

To my Barcelona friends, I won’t say the typical “thoughts and prayers” bullshit. Neither the thoughts from somebody miles away from you, nor any prayers to an invisible entity will do anything to revive the dead or heal the injured.
