Apple Donates $2 Million To Fight Nazis

USA Today reports:

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company would donate $2 million to anti-hate groups, releasing a staff memo that rebuked President Trump and others who claim a “moral equivalence” between white supremacists and the protesters who countered them in last week’s deadly Virginia rally.

Cook sent a memo to employees Wednesday pledging the donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. The Montgomery, Alabama based SPLC is one of the leading groups that track the rise of hate groups. Cook is an Alabama native.

Apple is also encouraging employees to contribute as well, and is matching their payments by two to one through Sept. 30. Additionally, Apple is setting up a system in Apple’s iTunes software to let consumers directly donate to the SPLC, which Cook said would be operational within the next few days.

The haters will SCREAM about this.

Think about this. 2 million to work AGAINST the regime.

Apple may not be perfect, but talk about putting morals before profit!

    Doesn’t happen to often

    • Reality.Bites

Without disparaging Apple or Cook, 2 million to Apple is perhaps the equivalent to fifty cents to you or me. And it’s a move that will be greatly welcome by the consumers they wish to retain and attract, both in the United States *and* worldwide. Nazis are evil. Everyone who is anyone agrees – except the US Nazi Party.

So there is no risk to profit here. None at all. I hope though, this is just the start of something from the corporate world.

Hey Samsung – this is something from Apple you DIDN’T have first.

    • David Walker

I also like the matching of employee contributions 2 to 1…IN ADDITION to the announced $2-million. And while I don’t know squat about iTunes, that’s got to be a convenient way for others to contribute. Now, if only there was a way to finance removal of the nazi-in-chief.

  • Tawreos

It is sad that ~70 years after WWII we have to fight Nazi’s again. Hopefully this this time will be the last time.

    • Ninja0980

Sad to say but hate will never die.
All we can do is make sure it doesn’t have platforms.

      • JCF

Was just reading study, that bigotry has to be actively taught AGAINST, or else the young pick it up. Thanks, Mom & Dad! [Though I don’t remember MLK’s death, I know that from the moment was I aware of him, he was a HERO in our family.]

  • Dramphooey

I have always used Apple products going back to a Performa in the 1990s and this makes me feel good. Thank you!

  • Harveyrabbit

2 million. Nice. That’s nearly 135,000 aluminum baseball bats from Walmart. Good start.

    • Stogiebear

Since the money is going to non-profits, they should be able to buy a few more tax free!

  • Michael R

I’m feeling like the Nazi thing is a distraction , the kind that makes Putin and Bannon happy by causing chaos . Bannon needs to be forced out , then Trump .
I’m not saying it should be ignored , but approached differently .

    • That_Looks_Delicious

“The medium is the message”? I think with Trump we’ve reached the point where, to paraphrase Marshall Macluhan, the “distractions” are the policy.

Everything else is just avoiding indictments. The country is being run by a criminal enterprise.

    • Tomcat

First NAZIS need to be forced out.

      • Michael R

Right , but how that’s done is important , without risking lives .
Actually look at the Mercer Family funding Richard Spencer ,
it’s something you wouldn’t see fighting armed Nazis at a rally .

The Economist isn’t exactly a left wing rag either.

      • Reality.Bites

By Republican standards it certainly is. It’s policies are centre to left-of-centre by current non-US Western democratic standards.

The Economist takes an editorial stance of classical and economic liberalism that supports free trade, globalisation, free immigration, and cultural liberalism (such as supporting legal recognition for same-sex marriage or drug liberalization).[2] The publication has described itself as “…a product of the Caledonian liberalism of Adam Smith and David Hume”

        • Karl Dubhe

When you’re a Nazi, everyone else is left wing.

          • Reality.Bites

Sounds like a rousing musical number from Springtime for Hitler.

If we survive, I predict there is going to be a big Broadway revival of the Producers with a new interpretation of the Roger De Bris role.

        • boatboy_srq

That The Economist is now left-of-centre is more an artifact of the Reichwing’s Rightward dash over the last twenty years than any liberal leanings on the part of the publication. All the positions you mention used to be part of the GOP platform, and have been successively abandoned/refuted as the party became more 1%ist, Xtianist and anti-Otherist.

      “favoite”?

Oh honey, drinking already? Don’t worry. I’m sure that tape of you peeing the bed in Russia will never hit the internets.

Oh no, honey, I’m not suggesting you’re one of those sex workers Trump hired.

Don’t be silly. I mean you got drunk and pissed yourself after you passed out.

      • Karl Dubhe

World Wide Web, the sun’s over the yardarm where the op’s drinking. 🙂

        • Reality.Bites

I’m not sure, but I’ve always thought Anastasia was in the Eastern Time Zone.

          • Karl Dubhe

It might be 7 am here, but I ‘just got off of work’… (kidding)

          • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Oh, honey I am flying between time zones today. I love when pilot does this so brunch continues for an extra hour. Bloody Mary? There is no celery, I threw it out. Takes up too much room in the glass.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

Today would be a good day for Trump to release his tax returns. Might as well. Mueller already has them anyways.

  • Dramphooey

A cretin who posted borderline racist crap in regard to Charlottesville unfriended me on the Facebook. It may’ve been my countering his bullshit or the final straw may’ve been my posting of this video, which I’m assuming was posted here earlier by somebody. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnXBeQwmmrc

    • Todd20036

Awfully young to be a hate filled wretch.

      And a coward to boot.

      • worstcultever

“I’m not a hater – I just enjoy being an obnoxious asshole”

Swear to god, 95% of this bullshit would go away if these young men’s computers were smashed and they were forced to get a real-life hobby.

        • Reality.Bites

          This is their real-life hobby.

That’s the one thing I am noticing about the Nazis and White Nationalists, they have a lot of younger members. I blame the lack of education in regards to world history as being a huge factor in that. Many schools offer it only as an elective now. I my day, back in the Jurassic Period, History was mandatory as was civics. Not sure how it worked in the U.S., but I honestly believe we’re seeing the results of that decision. Simply put, younger people haven’t got a clue about World History, let alone 20th century history.

        • Oh, Parker

They don’t think anything happened until they were born and grabbed their first device. They’ve never had to sacrifice anything for freedom and equality or even seen any adult have to for that matter.

        • popebuck1

Young males are impressionable, often have a lot of free time on their hands (especially if they’re in school or unemployed) and are full of angry hormones – there’s a reason they’re the prime recruiting targets for every terrorist organization ever.

    • GayOldLady

A “friend” you’re better off without.

  • SoCalGal20

And hopefully $400,000 (or more) will make it to that group that gets people out of white nationalist groups. The one that Sevastian Gorka’s wife got the government funding cut off.

  • Reality.Bites

Shorter Trump: He’s a fag. Loser.

Republicans – if you actually wanted a businessman as your leader, there’s one who grew up in Mobile, Alabama. His father was a shipyard worker and his mother worked at a pharmacy. He runs the largest company in the world and has a net worth of $785 million.

And no. He is NOT an entrepreneur. He didn’t start a company. Nor did he inherit his money. He’s richer than Trump because he’s that GOOD and that SMART that people will pay him these vast sums of money to work for them.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Perhaps some of the funds can help restore the funding cut by the administration?

Wait ’til they find out about Gates & Microsoft…and let’s not even start with Google. Honestly, if these idiots along with their religious inbred cousins, the religious, actually stopped using shit made by companies that support liberal ideals, they’d be living in shacks with no running water, electricity, a car or any other amenity. Face it kids, we won the culture wars, all we’re seeing now is the convulsions and death throes of the right.

  • Lesley

Nice gesture, Apple. But I still want to know why the logic board on my MacBook Pro with touch bar that I purchased 3 months ago for $2000 needs to be replaced. Sigh

  • boatboy_srq

    This is good news.

But it would have been better news 12 months ago, before a fascist got (s)elected pResident.

    • johncAtl

Up until about 11:00pm on November 8th none of us believed that Trump would be elected. Even Trump didn’t think he would win.

      • boatboy_srq

Up until 11 pm on 23 June 16, most Brit’s expected the Brexit vote would be firmly Remain. The US was forewarned.

It would be GREAT to see all the other CEOs of the Companies that were in the 2 disbanded organizations, do the same. Support Anti-Racist Organizations!!!
