American Cancer Society Yanks Mar-A-Lago Gala

Earlier today the famed Cleveland Clinic canceled its annual big-ticket fundraiser at Mar-A-Lago over Trump’s campaign to repeal Obamacare and his cuts to federal medical research programs.

In the second such blow today, the American Cancer Society just canceled their annual gala at Mar-A-Lago in a statement citing their commitment to diversity – which, perhaps obviously, is a thinly-veiled shot at Trump’s support for white supremacists.

Expect the usual furious tweetstorm to ensue.

Remember, he didn’t build it, he bought it. It was left to the US government in the will of Marjorie Merriweather Post, but they sold it off instead. And unlike anything he’s ever built, or any Confederate statues, Mar-a-lago was a legit historical site before he got his little hands on it. He can go in the sink hole, but Mar-a-Largo should be preserved. And fumigated of course.

Interesting how he bought the former home of a woman who was infinitely richer than him and gave to charity.

More than 30 years ago, my graduate roommate got a job at NIH and Johns Hopkins to do cancer research. He watched millions of dollars of equipment being hauled away because the Government had cancelled major research grants…because the researchers had not immediately discovered a cure for cancer. New researchers with new grants were bringing in new, identical, equipment …this cycle repeated itself multiple times over the next decades. Because Congress wants instant success but cures may take decades of work.

But he will attempt to destroy as much as he can on the way out. Because that’s what NPDs do.

      • RoFaWh

I was dozing earlier today and dreamt of a few high ranking military men entering the Oval Office late at night, instructing the crazy old fascist to put his coat on, and spirit him away into the dark, no one seeing, no one hearing.

PS: It strikes me suddenly that the reason the crazy old fascist started his re-election campaign so soon is because he KNOWS he isn’t going to even make it through his first term and wants to grab the campaign money while he still can.

Why the fuck is there a Jefferson Davis monument in Arizona?

    https://twitter.com/FOX10Phoenix/status/898262302788526080

    • Adam King

They don’t sell sledgehammers in Arizona?

      • tonyg

They sell Crazy Glue and Glitter. Just sayin.

    • matrem

      Racists are everywhere

    • The Klan. Every goddamned time a Confederate monument went up, it will always have been the Klan and/or politicians seeking to curry favor with them.

      • UrsusArctos

A ton of the monuments were done by the polite/higher class women belonging to the UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy). They looked down on the KKK, but didn’t mind what the rabble was doing. The Concerned Citizens Council here in MS was the “businessman’s KKK”. Not all the racist crap was straight up klan. The “more socially prominent people” groups were actually worse.

    • Natty Enquirer

      Because London Bridge is there.

    • Personally, I think this was a marvelous bit of highly symbolic vandalism.

    • clay

Because the Daughters of the Confederacy paid for there to be one.
They were trying to sponsor a cross-continental highway by the southern route to compete with the Lincoln highway through the middle route. It was never completed, but some of the segments were, and some markers were “restored” in opposition to the Civil Rights movement a generation later. Remember, Arizona was the state that wouldn’t recognize MLK Day.

      • UrsusArctos

Also Arizona’s history as a “CSA Territory” before the Union army showed up and sorted that out.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

      OK, I’ll bite:

How did they get boiling tar to the middle of the dessert? Did they mix it there?

But massive props for the effort! And a great symbolism to boot.

      • Tomcat

Hell I can’t even get any to fix my roof and they have plenty.

      • You can buy buckets of driveway asphalt tar at Home Despot. It dries in a few hours.

        • Reality.Bites

Was that a typo or a sly comment when you said Home Despot? Love it either way.

        • Oscarlating Wildely

          {Shows my industrial knowledge; I didn’t even know that there was such a thing.}

        • Lazycrockett

k then where did they get the feathers? cause I would sooner die than give up my feather pillows.

          • Reality.Bites

            Cut open a pillow?

          • Ken M

            Art supply store?

          • AJ Drew

who doesn’t have a spare boa in their closet?

          • UrsusArctos

^^^ You sir, have won this thread.

          • kareemachan

IKEA has pretty inexpensive feather pillows.

            Just sayin’….

      • Ken M

Let your creativity soar. : )

    • Tomcat

Would be a great use for those assault rifles instead of tar and feathers or along with.

Other events are shopping for new venues in the hope to cancel Mar-O-Lago events. Palm Beach News paper published brutal Chamber of Commerce rant against charities renting Mar-O-Lago for events. http://www.mypalmbeachpost.com/business/palm-beach-chamber-head-charities-have-conscience-mar-lago/Pp7jHFkUixKlK7eQaAArmM/

You can bet he’ll have no trouble filling on the spots on a Religious Advisory Council – and yes, I’m sure somewhere among the ultra-orthodox he’ll find a rabbi.

      • clay

Uh, actually, that does exist, is filled, and has had meetings, even with the President, already.

        • Reality.Bites

OK, then change that to “he’ll have no need to fill any vacancies.” 🙂

          • clay

It’s scary when our dread has already been exceeded

    • Natty Enquirer

Pulling up the drawbridge, eh? So much for “Mr. Business.”

    • clay

So much for the 83% of infrastructure reinvestment he was looking for from private sources. That means his total infrastructure reinvestment offer is down to $200 million, when the DoT budget is somewhere around $90 billion. Now we know why they didn’t talk about that at the infrastructure presser.

      • Ken M

Please go play golf this weekend…Please go play golf this weekend… I don’t pray often, but to get this, I might. Please go play golf this weekend…Please go play golf this weekend. : )

        • UrsusArctos

If the forecast is for rain, should we hope for lightning?

        • kareemachan

Tomorrow he’s talking about SE Asian stuff.

Please, god, hear my prayer that Pence tackles him before he can order some kind of crap.

  • Ken M

Now if this keeps up, he may feel it..if even just enough to irritate.

  • netxtown

What the fuck is with these orgs sucking up to donnie by spending outrageous money at his ‘facility’ in florida? what favor are they hoping to curry? surely there are other venues that are more affordable…and much less controversial and/or political.

And – now knowing ACS was going to piss away ‘donations’ to donnie – why the fuck would I donate to them??

    • LesbianTippingHabits

Perhaps many of their regular donors asked ACS that same question.

  • Cackalaquiano

Why the fuck did they ever book that location in the first place?

    • LesbianTippingHabits

Probably because they made money by selling lots of tickets and getting things as inexpensively as possible – even better, free. Not from Trump.

  • Dagoril

Even Cancer wants nothing to do with Drumpf!!! Lol.

  • teeveedub

I can’t wait to hear #Dolt45 criticize ACS: “I like people who don’t get cancer.”

  • JDS

As a cancer survivor, I’m very happy that The American Cancer Society did this.

  • Reality.Bites

BTW, you Republican “celebrities” who whine about not getting jobs and insist it has nothing to do with your glaring lack of talent… if you thought you weren’t working before, just wait.

  • Sod. Much. Winning.

  • kareemachan

    No tweets yet? Sad….

    • Jimmy R

Silence till six am. Isn’t that The Hour of the Golden Shit and Twit?

  • Hanwi

Why are nonprofit holding lavish galas at expensive resorts? Paging HRC…. /s

    • LesbianTippingHabits

In some cases [not this one], the nonprofit gets a good rate, even free.
Of course, if it’s Donald Trump, nonprofits pay full price – even his own.

      • Hanwi

He probably charges his own tenfold.

      • boobert

I’m sure the event fees at chump properties got doubled after the election , just like the memberships.

      • coram nobis

It would hardly clear any money, going all into Donald’s pocketses, my precious. Better that this group find another venue, maybe at the Hilton in Minas Tirith.

  • boobert

I hope neither of these events got stuck with cancellation fees.

  • Thorn Spike

    So much winning.

American Cancer Society Yanks Mar-A-Lago Gala

Since Nazi Drumpf is a cancer on society.

  • Burly Stone

    Winning!

  • Tom Johnson

Late Thursday, the American Friends of Magen David Adom, an organization supporting Israel disaster relief programs, told The Palm Beach Post it is canceling a planned fund-raising gala at Mar-a-Lago, set for Sunday, Feb. 25

  • Jay Silversmith

AGAIN, another colossal waste of taxpayer donations to the cancer society. It’s not like don the con wasn’t going to over-charge them. Why the hell were they even TRYING to book Maggot Lagoon?
