David Crosby To Ted Nugent: You’re Not In The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Because You Totally Suck

The Associated Press reports:

David Crosby says fellow rocker Ted Nugent has been kept out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because he’s not good enough, not because of his politics.

Crosby responded to a fan’s question about whether political correctness kept Nugent out of the Hall by saying that Nugent “just isn’t good enough.” He also used an expletive to describe the “Cat Scratch Fever” singer.

Nugent told Albany, New York, radio station WQBK-FM last week he hasn’t been inducted into the Cleveland-based Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because of his support for gun rights and his membership on the National Rifle Association’s board of directors.

Crosby has been inducted twice as a member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

I saw Crosby, Stills and Nash in their first public performance at Woodstock. Three guys and two guitars held 400,000 people spellbound. It was magical.

      • sfbob

I was there. CSN taking the stage and saying how scared they were to be up there is one of the few memories I have of the weekend. That and the Airplane taking the stage at dawn with Grace Slick wishing us all a GOOD MORNING PEOPLE!

      • kareemachan

I saw them later when Southern Cross came out. It took a couple of songs for them to get their harmonies going, but OMG, after that, perfection.

      • Librarykid

The grass might have had something to do with that.

Grass, hell! I had top shelf Afghani hash and a bag of acid.

  • TrueWords
    • ElenorRigby

Exactly. He’s a noslagia act at best. He was part of that post-disco rock revival. He was influenced by good bands like Motörhead and cheese like Foreigner. He never had a major hit. He didn’t influence anyone aside from maybe Billy Squire and his act was less about music and more about being a “bad boy poseur.”

      • Gerry Fisher

FWIW, his biggest hit, “Cat Scratch Fever” was released in ’77, which was at the peak of disco. I remember it as being slightly popular during my high school years. I listened to a lot of radio and music during my college years in the early 80s, and I don’t remember Nugent having any new music at that time; he was long gone by then.

Foghat (“Slow ride….take it EEEE-zee”), Heart, early Foreigner (first album released in ’77), and maybe George Thorogood were what I’d call his contemporaries. We called it “hard rock” or “heavy metal” back in the day. The better hard-rock acts of the time were Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, and I’m pretty sure those three are inducted into the hall of fame. In my high school in terms of hard rock, it was Aerosmith & Led Zeppelin…and then everyone else.

Funniest line I ever read about Billy Squire: “He’s the only one dumb enough to write a song about jerking off and not put a woman into the lyrics.”

        • kareemachan

I saw Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin about that time. Good times.

I still hate the people who decided to put the Aerosmith concern in the King Dome (aka The Clam by the Sound). The acoustics absolute sucked.

I would be 100% okay with him being kept out of RR Hall of Fame BECAUSE of his politics.

    • Chucktech

Sure, but it’s great to not have to use that as a reason. His lack of merit is plenty reason enough.

Crosby is right. Nothing Nugent has ever recorded is listenable today, even as camp.

I actually rode the Marrakech Express in my student days. It was not far off from the description with animals on board. It was also during Ramadan, and Morracans were heading home from the north. There were 2 Swedes, 2 Norwegians and 3 Americans in the wooden car with sliding wooden closures for “windows”, 4 sets of wooden benches on each side. (Each bench held 4 people) All the rest, Morracans, who could not sit, were sitting on the floor in the relatively open car. I woke up to find the 3 Morracans on my bench to be leaning against one another and myself sound asleep. There was also the smell of hash in the car.

Last night I kept getting hijacked here by an alert with a Google logo saying my phone was dangerously infected with 4 viruses from Adult Websites I had been visiting and to download their app from Google Play to clean up. The web address was some jibberish us.662xlx.pw. The reason I knew it was bogus is that I have a strict no-porn rule on my phone. Swear. To. God. An occasional google image of Tom Daly on vacation is my limit when it comes to my phone.
So I know downloading that app would have really hijacked my phone. It stopped popping up eventually.

The only thing that has worked for me to prevent this is using my VPN, which unfortunately I can run while on my works wifi.

I can’t visit this site without an adblocker, especially on mobile. The other day I visited and got hammered with all the stupid Taboola ads, Realjock nonsense, you name it. Page loads took forever. Tunes out, once again, the Easylist adblocker filter list I have enabled was de-selected. I’ve had no recent updates to the browser, Adblocker Plus, or the filters. It’s as though some script here or on a couple other sites has figured out a way to disable Adblocker by disabling the filters. I’ll be watching this too.

“Kid Rock” may not be allowed to appear on the ballot for U.S. Senate in Michigan.
Instead, Robert Ritchie would probably have to use his real name and not his stage name.

He’ll legally change his name if he actually runs.

I think he’s after ‘free advertising’. (why the hell is that word spelled with an ‘s’ rather than a ‘z’?)

      • Todd20036

That could happen, but no one in Congress is going to take that bag of shit seriously, no matter what he calls himself.

Nugent: I got my physical notice 30 days prior to. Well, on that day I ceased cleansing my body. No more brushing my teeth, no more washing my hair, no baths, no soap, no water. Thirty days of debris build. I stopped shavin’ and I was 18, had a little scraggly beard, really looked like a hippie. I had long hair, and it started gettin’ kinky, matted up. Then two weeks before, I stopped eating any food with nutritional value. I just had chips, Pepsi, beer-stuff I never touched-buttered poop, little jars of Polish sausages, and I’d drink the syrup, I was this side of death, Then a week before, I stopped going to the bathroom. I did it in my pants. poop, piss the whole shot. My pants got crusted up.

  • Pat

He’s saying what everyone knows to be true. Nugent isn’t good enough for the R&R Hall of Fame, and it has 0 to do with his politics.

  • marshlc

Yup. Ted Nugent was on in the background at parties, and that’s about it. One hit doesn’t get you into the Hall of Fame, when you’re not influential or respected.

  • Larry in Oklahoma

Even in the Amboy Dukes, when they had the hit “Journey To The Center Of The Mind, which charted at #16, Ted was not the lead vocalist. He was the lead guitar player and a mere backup singer. According to Wikipedia, none of his solo crap ever made it past #30 on the charts. Poor charting is why he will never be inducted. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young have charted much more than that, as CSN&Y, solo efforts and in other groups. THAT is why David Crosby is allowed to say what he did and is justified in his thoughts.
Wiki says one of his nicknames is “Motormouth.” EXACTLY! That’s all he is.

    • Lumpy Gaga

The apex of his own solo career was only due to allowing someone else to be lead vocal for a couple of albums.

      Doesn’t play well with others.

    • TheManicMechanic

He was also involved with Damn Yankees, which had at best a couple minor hits. Seems everything he touches, like his pants, turns to shit.

  • Luther Kreiger

It’s interesting how so many conservatives immediately default to screaming “I don’t suck! It’s discrimination against my politics!!” when they’re actually–being charitable–mediocre at best at their chosen profession and some combination of rampant ego and misplaced privilege doesn’t allow them to acknowledge that.

See: Nugent, D’vorce D’spouza, Eric Eric Eric Erickson, Jonah Goldturd, Any “conservative comedian”…

    • boatboy_srq

Ditto for Coulter, Limbaugh, Beck, Savage/Wiener, et al. Apparently Conservatistism confers excellence by default.

    • Benny Hill

Similar to rants of Christian persecution. Every other religion in America is under real persecution, I guess Christians didn’t want to feel left out.

    • popebuck1

It’s the flip side of their other traditional whine, that when anyone of color achieves anything whatsoever, it must SURELY have been because of Affirmative Action. As someone said, racism is the greatest champion of white mediocrity.

  • theonlyseven

Joe Perry, James Hetfield and Eric Clapton have all gone on the record regarding their fondness for guns. And they are all in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So, what have they got that Nugent doesn’t? Besides talent.

      Clean untainted jeans.

    • Lumpy Gaga

The Asheton Brothers (both now passed) are in (as part of the Stooges). And they are hardcore Michigan rotwingers (according to Iggy).

I guess you left off the /s tag, but politics aside, the idea that Nugent is in the same league as Clapton, Aerosmith, and the Stooges … Just, no. Clapton has his own political ball and chain because he expressed public support for an anti-immigrant UK politician 1979 or so.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vnYKRacKQc

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
    And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good-bye.
    Teach your children well,
Their father’s hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh
    And know they love you.
    And you, of tender years,
Can’t know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
    Teach your parents well,
Their children’s hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

Not a huge fan of “the nuge” but he wasn’t really influenced by late ’70s bands.

Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes were tearing it up in Detroit in the early 70s. His first solo record (self titled, containing stranglehold) was “fresh” when it was released, but eventually he seemed to become a caricature.

I agree that politics isn’t the only reason he’s not in the HoF, but he was an original rocker for awhile.
