OKLAHOMA: Feds Sting White Supremacist Planning To Replicate Timothy McVeigh’s 1995 Terror Bombing

The Washington Post reports:

The FBI has arrested an Oklahoma man on charges that he tried to detonate what he thought was a 1,000-pound bomb, acting out of a hatred for the U.S. government and an admiration for Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, according to court papers.

Jerry Drake Varnell was arrested shortly after an early Saturday morning attempt to detonate a fake bomb packed into what he believed was a stolen cargo van outside a bank in Oklahoma City, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court. He was charged with attempted destruction of a building by means of an explosive.

According to the complaint, over the course of a months-long undercover investigation by the FBI, Varnell made repeated statements about the extent of his hatred of the federal government.

More from Heavy.com:

He was part of an open group for an Oklahoma militia on Facebook. His likes page is filled with likes of musicians and movies; he’d also liked an anti-corporate page called The Other 98 Percent. Another of his likes is for a page called “P*ssed Off White Americans.”

The about me section of that page reads, “We are the sons and daughters of European Heritage, and we are tired of being treated as second class citizens. LOUD, PROUD, and very PISSED OFF!” He also liked the sites “Right Wing News” and “Stop Pulling the Race Card” as well as sites on the Illuminati and militias.

        • Jay George

Germany was never set to invade the US afaik, possibly only in their wildest dreams.

          • David L. Caster

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that the US would have eventually been attacked. Had Hitler and the German army managed to defeat Russia and gain control of the oil and gas and other resources of that region, he may very well have been able to wage war indefinitely. Had he listened to to his generals, he would have come to control most of Europe before the US could lift a finger.

Personally, I’m thankful Hitler was so full of himself once he came to power because he didn’t listen to his generals and was soundly defeated primarily because of his crushing losses at the hands of the Russians. Trump reminds us of Hitler in ways big and small as far as his personality is concerned, and his attacks on immigrants and minorities though faint are echoes of the programs visited on the German people that weren’t “Arian” enough.

The brain drain induced by the purging of the Jews and other ethnic groups that the Reich targeted was its downfall but it did not realize it at the time. The US wised up and (finally) went on to accept as refugees some of the smartest people on the planet at the time. That turned out to be an important turning point because it contributed to preventing the Reich from producing the atomic bomb first.

Trump is dangerous for a host of reasons, not the least of which is his blindingly evident ignorance of just about everything in history. That ignorance is much more prevalent in the US than it has been in the last 70 years and is itself very dangerous.

We do have our owns problems with festering racism and neo-nazis, though. Hearing about Angela Merkel as “the leader of the free world” makes me uneasy, too. The last few times my country tried to lead internationally didn’t go so well…

          • Edmund Allin

All countries that survive to this day have had “interesting pasts”. Probably none have confronted that past as diligently as Germany has – and I say that knowing the equivocations that were made in the 1950s and later. I get where you’re coming from, but the answer isn’t pretty boy Trudeau, it isn’t Macron (though he might grow into that role), it isn’t whoever is the PM of Italy or Japan this year, it can’t yet be the PM of India, and by St Edmund, it certainly isn’t Theresa May. So, by default, it’s time for Germany to lead. More consensually, of course, than in the past. :p She’s the sanity barrier we need! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/0f14c73a42a99520e61d7c00f3a365cba598ec2fcc9c24c343d5fe60165000f3.jpg

Maybe a good place to bring it up, and before I say anything I’ll mention that there are a LOT of people in this area who would come to our defense, but….
We live way out in the country. Saturday night around 2 a.m. a loud UTV (a four-passenger ATV if you’re not familiar) drove past and we at least thought we heard someone say “so that’s where they live.” Now, we’re pretty well known because of our small business, so it’s entirely possible that it’s either a completely innocent remark or that the speaker wasn’t even talking about us. However, given the times, overhearing that made me decide I needed to remind myself how to operate the 12 gauge. Thanks, Trump.

    • M Jackson

      Good luck, be safe.

    • PickyPecker

The 12 guage AND look for ways to upgrade your property security. Lighting, ‘no trespassing’ signs. Maybe get/add a dog to your family. Stay safe out there. I know how it is….we’re in the country too and are also ‘out’ so we stay vigilant these days. XO

Had an outdoor LED light installed last week and there are two big mutleys in the household, although I often joke I need to send them to watchdog school……I have never felt even slightly threatened here and we get along great with most people in the area, so it was really disconcerting.

    • canoebum

What do you mean by that statement? How many of Gore Vidal’s books have you read? Any, at all?

      • pch1013

Yes, several. “Julian” is my favorite. “Palimpsest” is great too.

But it is also a fact that Gore Vidal conducted a fawning interview of Timothy McVeigh shortly before he was executed, and doubled down on that praise for years thereafter.

        https://www.theguardian.com/world/2001/aug/17/edinburghbookfestival2001.mcveigh

        • canoebum

Interesting article. I can understand Vidal’s interest in McVeigh as an historian, but if the article is to be believed he may have gone a little off the rails, much in the same way Capote did with Perry Smith. Vidal was an iconoclast. That he would be critical of government overreach is no surprise. Personally, I have no sympathy for the notion of murdering innocent people to express a political point of view, and none for those who engage in it.

It’s different from racial discrimination though, certainly.

          • for most of us, we can hide, if we choose or are forced to do so, our orientation. those of us with non-pink skin cannot. that is the major difference, and it informs and directs the different paths we take as minority groups, to achieve equality.

The Republicans are in charge of the House & Senate, and Racist Drumpf is the Nazi President. Shouldn’t this kid be happy? Just wait to see how many more of these angry, confused kids come out of the woodwork, once they realize how Drumpf has failing them. He has been feeding their anger and hate…only to lie and fail them.

Good luck blaming the Dems, Hillary, or Obama for this, President Shitgibbon

    • TexasBoy

The Trumpanzees are already blaming Obama for the racial divide.

      • Tulle Christensen

Of course, how dare he be president while black, we all know that is not allowed

      • pch1013

        They always have.

      • Uncle Mark

Yep…it’s their tiring and predictable default. We’ve already heard D’Souza blame the Democrats for “creating the various minority supremist groups, but leaving white people out; thus causing their violent outrage. (It’s in the same vein as the lame excuse that straight people hate gays, because we have a parade and they don’t BS…or don’t make me angry, wife, or you’ll just make me beat you some more…even though I don’t want to.)

Yep, apparently, everyone else is making privileged white men behave badly. If only the other groups could understand that white men feel threatened by other groups demanding the same privileges. It only angers & threatens them, like when a black man became president when he was “clearly incapable of doing the job because he was black.” It’s why Nazi President Drumpf felt his privilege so threatened by that, it must have been an evil plot by the “country of Africa”…else Drumpf should have been president sooner. Clearly, insulting Nazi President Drumpf is an insult to the white men of this country. Why can’t the rest of you inferior minority groups see that ?!! DAMN…now I have to get some more citronella for my white privilege torch. /s

    • coram nobis

Being in charge means reining in your uncontrollables. If we’re reading the Nazi playbook to see what’s next, we should look beyond the Reichstag fire and ahead to the Night of Long Knives, when Hitler decided to give his stormtroops a short sharp shock. These people would do well to remember this, before Donald does.

      • Uncle Mark

Except didn’t Hitler let his Brownshirts terrorize the country and other groups before the Night of the Long Knives? I somehow doubt that Donnie will take them out, as they are his ardent fans…and while he has Stephen Miller, Bannon, & Gorka working for him. You know how Drumpf feels about winning the approval his “loyal” fans….unless it helped improve his “ratings.”

        • coram nobis

Yes, he did let them terrorize others, and discarded the rule of law in the process. The SA’s sin was that he found them more and more uncontrollable and inconvenient — and disposable. It’s somewhat analogous to Stalin getting rid of the Old Bolsheviks, for in the end they want total control, and no rivals.

The infighting between Bannon and McMaster seems familiar. They could end up like Röhm and von Blomberg — or like Bukharin and Tukhachevsky.

      “It’s a failure of ObamaCare.”
“Eight years of pent-up resentment and anger at his inaction.”
      /s

It’s pretty easy, just flip the script and turn the projector into a teleprompter. If they target anyone in Trump’s administration, it’ll be the moderators or Sessions (for re-escalating the war on drugs).

    • stevenj

The GOP owns all of this. Their spin machine is running out of gas.

    • RoFaWh

What Doony-boy really wants to do:

      1. Find deluded neo-nazi.

      2. Stick hand in his pocket, remove all loose change, and extract to one’s own pocket.

Expression #202b, the “I’m very unhappy” frown, as taught to the young Donny-boy by the late, unlamented, diseased Roy Cohn.

[PS: I keep flicking these little smears of shit at Drumpf to remind everyone of his very early connection with Cohn.]

        • Amanda B. Rekendwith

Have you read Citizen Cohn by Nicholas von Hoffman?
A fascinating read. He was really a disturbed soul, so it’s not surprising Trump had much in common with him.

          • FAEN

            They’re both assholes.

  • KnownDonorDad

    Those damned radical Islamic terrorists!

    • coram nobis

Well, it’s nice the Feds are using the fake-bomb entrapment for the other guys.

      • Hue-Man

It’s easier than actually intercepting real terrorists.

A British Columbia couple convicted of terrorism charges have had their verdicts tossed out in a scathing court decision that flays the RCMP for its “egregious” conduct in manipulating naive suspects into carrying out a police-manufactured crime.

[B.C. Supreme Court Justice Catherine] Bruce said Mounties involved in a months-long sting launched in early 2013 knowingly exploited Nuttall and Korody’s vulnerabilities to induce them to commit an offence.

She described the pair as marginalized, socially isolated, former heroin addicts dependent on methadone and welfare to subsist and said they were “all talk and no action.”

  • i’d just like to add to the list of domestic terrorists who’ve done bombing and attempted mass murder and running down helpless people with their cars, and who represent the LGBT and progressive communities.

  • Paula

Exactly what is the government doing that they are so mad at?
They won’t let him buy whatever drugs he wants? They won’t let him drive 300 MPH whenever he wants? He has to pay taxes? They make him get a drivers license? He can’t have 50 cats or 200 chickens in his home? Inoculations?

What the fuck is it with these people?

    • clay

      He wants:
      1) to strangle his (now ex-)wife,
      2) a private grow-room for marijuana,
      3) the ATM to give him money regardless of his account balance, and
      4) them to take the chip out of his head so he doesn’t have the tin foil fucking up his hair.

      • Paula

That’s about what I figured. I want my own starship but, that ain’t gonna’ fucking happen either.
        Fucking asshole rednecks.

        • Octavio

Don’t forget the the chemicals they are putting in public water supplies that are turning us all gay.

          • Paula

Yeah, whenever I see the chemtrails, I keep the kids and the animals inside. Its really a bitch to get those little gas masks on 12 chihuahuas.

          • clay

But, hey, if you blew up a bank’s office space, killing the cleaning and security staff, I’m sure that would all end.

    • CottonBlimp

They sense the unfairness of our capitalist system, but their justified rage has been redirected towards minorities and “the government”, vague, simplistic targets that don’t require them to reexamine the conservative beliefs they were raised with or to have any actual understand of the specific policies that result in their misery.

    • RoFaWh

I suspect they really don’t know, don’t have a single example.

They dislike all laws and regulations that say “You are not allowed to…” unless the resultant action annoys them, in which case they’re among the first to whine and complain that, say, the neighbor’s dog barks some.

    • Jukesgrrl

I would like to know the exact same thing. The county supervisor who represents the area I live in, in Pima County, Arizona, made a similar statement over the weekend. She posted on her FB page, “I’m sick and tired of being hit for being white …. [sic] It is all about making us feel like we need to apologize. I am WHITE — and proud of it! No apologies necessary.”

This is an elected public official. A woman of some means who lives in a white suburb. She posted this on Saturday, apropos of who-knows-what except what she was watching on television apparently. Immediately three of the other Pima County supervisors called for her to apologize, which she has not done. She also wouldn’t respond to questions from the media. Instead she went on a conservative radio talk show and ranted about “gotcha questions” from the press and “identity politics.” “I was expressing my frustration with the identity politics. And I think the American people are rejecting those politics, and I certainly will not be ashamed for the color of my skin.”

When she was ever asked to issue any such apology remains to be explained.

Pima County is home to the City of Tucson and the University of Arizona. Pima County is much like Maricopa County, location of Phoenix. The city has a Democratic mayor and majority Dem city council, but is surrounded by Republican suburbs. Pima is about the size of the entire state of New Jersey and has a population of about one million people. It shares its southern border with Mexico and the majority of people who live here do not want Trump’s wall. Median family income is about $46,000. About 85% of residents are white with others mostly Mexican or from native tribes. Where Miller gets her idea she’s being abused for being white, I can’t even imagine.

  • Let’s be clear here: This was an attempted act—thankfully thwarted—of domestic reich-wing terrorism.

    • Paula

I’m not crazy. But, I like people to think that I am. They leave me alone.

    • stevenj

I only act a little crazy waiting for the bus at night. No one bothers me. Otherwise I’m a barrel of laughs.

    • Karl Dubhe

I’ve been saying that since last November.

Fucking sad that I never really noticed just how fucking insane we are…

  • Elsewhere1010

Your European heritage called. They’ve disowned you, moved, and left no forwarding address. They request you not try to contact them and to stop mentioning them as justification for your ignorant, obscene racial rants.

PS, They don’t know who your father is, but they’re pretty sure his first name was Shlomo. Surprise!

  • Mark Née Fuzz

He can always use the Don Jr defense that nothing actually came of it.

  • Steven B

And these are the people who will be taking up arms and rioting (or worse) after Trump is booted from office.

    • PickyPecker

Stay; go…..they’ll take up arms regardless.

      • Steven B

They already have, i.e. Charlottesville. But I’m expecting it to ramp up to a level unlike anything seen before in this country.

        • PickyPecker

More than likely. Just be prepared, smart and vigilant.

        • RoFaWh

The US Government has suppressed insurrections before. In fact, the Whisky Rebellion of 1791 was during George Washington’s first term. He acted decisively to put it down.

          • Steven B

I didn’t mean to suggest that I thought the violent protesters would be successful. Just that it should be expected.

    • Ben in Oakland

We can only hope. Open season!

  • Jmdintpa

people on here and elsewhere say im a troll when i say this is all going to end in violence with trump and the nationalist. they make fun and say how much damage can old white people in electric scooters do. well as you have seen this weekend some people in the USA have a rude awakening of the amount of hate and violence that there is out in the “rest of the country”

    • David Walker

The Tiki Torch Trotters don’t want the old white people in electric scooters. It was specifically in their list of “no fats, no femmes, tight black fitted T-shirts, be courteous” manifesto posted here last Thursday or Friday.

  • andrew

It’s no secret, everybody left, right and center know that right wing extremists and evangelical Christian hate preachers have a friend in the Oval Office and his name is trump.

  • rednekokie

Again, I say it’s time to dig around in the archives and resurrect the old French guillotine which was so popular and useful during the last decade of the 18th century.
A couple of whack with that, and these idiots will crawl back under the woodwork where they belong.

    • RoFaWh

The French used them to deliver the death penalty until 1977.

They must still have a few stuffed away in warehouses.

      • rednekokie

Shouldn’t have stopped using them — those devices tend to get rusty when not used, and you then have to re-sharpen them and give them a good grease job.

I’ll bet there are a few still hanging around.

A good place for it would be the Capitol steps.

    Oh, look. Oklahoma again.

And Scott Pruitt is from there.

Both Varnell and Pruitt are doing precisely the same thing to our gov’t.

  • Ben in Oakland

Another southern patriot-traitor. Please, let them secede. They can enjoy living in the Nigeria of America with their like. Indeed compatriots.

Jerry Drake Varnell doesn’t know that “Illuminati” is a plural form.

    Do the Illuminati know….?

    “The Other 98 Percent”

Yikes, is that the same “Other 98 Percent” I’ve been on for 3-4 years? :-0 [FWIW, they did recently change their name to, I think, “Democracy Spring”].

If so, they have ZERO to do w/ Drumpfian politics!
