OHIO: Virginia Suspect’s Former High School Teacher Says He Was “Very Infatuated With The Nazis” [VIDEO]

Cincinnati’s ABC affiliate reports:

The man police say rammed his car into a crowd of people protesting a white nationalist rally was “very infatuated with the Nazis,” according to one of his high school teachers. James Alex Fields Jr., 20, also wanted to join the Army but wasn’t allowed to enlist because of his mental health history, the teacher said.

Derek Weimer, who taught history to Fields at Randall K. Cooper High School in Union, Kentucky, said he was a quiet, respectful student but had some “radical ideas on race.” Field’s mother, Samantha Bloom, told The Associated Press on Saturday night that she knew her son was attending a rally in Virginia but didn’t know it was a white supremacist rally.

According to the teacher, Fields was rejected by the military for his history of being prescribed “psychotic medications.”

  • bkmn

But plenty of police departments would have taken him.

  • Gustav2

    “psychotic medications”

Here we go with the excuse. Of course all Nazis are psychos.

    • another_steve

I think it’s true that extreme irrational hatred of a thing or a people is a form of mental illness.

      • Silver Badger

You don’t have to be sane to be a terrorist.

    • Lizard

He’ll be immediately chucked into the “mentally ill” camp, just like all white terrorists.

We need another word for these people. It’s a disservice to millions of mentally ill americans who would never hurt anyone to lump them with murderers. Criminally ill, maybe?

      • another_steve

“Insane” is no longer a PC word, but we used to say “criminally insane.”

      • Silver Badger

        Terrorist works for me.

      • ColdCountry

Criminals who are also mentally ill? But certainly, ‘criminals’ first.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

        Sick Scum works

    • clay

It’s only an excuse as long as people let them ignore recruitment. You know what all suicide bombers have in common– they’re suicidal, even for those who fail at the bomber part. Than only means that we should be watching those targeting mentally and emotionally vulnerable persons. It’s not the leaders, the instigators, the inciters who are going to put their own lives on the line, but it should be tied back to them.

  • Lakeview Bob

How in the hell can you be infatuated by the Nazis? I just am not wired that way and it makes it impossible to understand.

    • Todd20036

You have low self esteem, no talent, and no hope of a future.

So you fall in love with people who claim you are special and superior for something that you were born with.

Additionally, you are willing to accept the idea that people who don’t believe as you do are no longer human and can be killed indiscriminately

Finally, you want to be part of a “family”, and what better family than people who say you are entitled to do as you please, including murder?

      • popebuck1

        See also: Ayn Rand.

“Of course you’re not a pathetic loser! You’re a superior genius and the ‘takers’ hate you for your greatness!”

    • another_steve

What Todd said, plus I suspect there’s a psycho-sexual element in the adoration of big burly tough guys marching in unison.

      • clay

A few years ago there was a Canadian male-separatist on here who wasn’t so much “gay” as misogynist.

    • crewman

Adding to other comments, also an allure of “the forbidden”. You’re a rebel if you adopt the identity the boogeyman of some other group. Also, there’s probably a perverse emotional logic of fear at play. If you join the group perpetrating a nightmare on other people, you’ll be safe.

      • Bad Tom

        Or at least get revenge.

      • BobSF_94117

Ya wanna be a rebel? Wear pink socks with your khakis…

I wear half shirts, short shorts, and sneakers with the Tasmanian devil on them.

      • another_steve

Yes. This area is very dark and very disturbing when you delve deeply into it. We toss around the term “quisling” (derived from Vidkun Quisling (1887-1945)), but the underlying phenomenon is really really disturbing.

It happens to be historical fact that some Jewish people assisted the Nazis in loading their fellow Jews into the cattle cars.

It was a Trump rally. Some were shouting “Heil Trump!” as they marched down the street.

      • Oh, Parker

We live in an older suburban neighborhood on the south side of Indy and we’ve seen an influx of Asian immigrants, mostly Burmese and Chinese, move in as the original owners have either retired and moved or died off. They keep their yards nice. Never argue or cause problems. Keep gardens. Work hard. Best neighbors you could hope for. One white neighbor across the way has put up a big confederate flag, probably to intimidate them, and us most likely. At that house there’s always beer parties, yelling, rednecks jumping off a second floor patio into their cheap above ground pool, and their entire place looks trashy. Yet the immigrants are the problem. Smdh.

I wonder if the arresting officers treated Fields to Burger King like they did Dylan Roof.

      • TrueWords

Dylann Roof was apprehended between 10 and 11 AM on 18 June 2015, and the circumstances under which he was provided with food from Burger King prior to his arraignment were not entirely clear. At the time of Roof’s arrest, the Charleston shooting was a worldwide headline and the case had already escalated to the level of a major news story.

One could speculate that Roof’s status (pending interrogation by federal agents) put him outside the facility’s standard process for providing food to inmates or suspects, or that Roof was indeed handled in a manner atypical from that of most arrestees, or that local police employed an abundance of caution with a very high-profile suspect to avoid his later making claims of mistreatment or denial of rights.

Regardless of all the straightforward reasons why police would provide food to a suspect in their custody, the plain explanation is that Roof hadn’t eaten in days, and the Shelby PD didn’t have the facilities to house him and provide him with meals while waiting for federal and Charleston authorities to arrive, so they had to dispatch someone to a nearby business to pick up some food for him

  • Christ. What an asshole.

Voldemort was more hands-on with his evil. He had no problem owning it, even wallowing in it. Drump is more like Fudge – major denial of his complicity. I say this because I don’t think Drump himself is evil, I just don’t think he gives a shit what happens as long as he has attention and adoration. Although, that in itself could be seen as evil.

Donald Trump sees an America that is terrified of foreigners of all stripes and wants the media to help him stoke that fear for his own purposes.

One cannot help but wonder what the president would do if a modern-day Timothy McVeigh managed to succeed in carrying out another one of these horrifying right-wing terror plots that Trump doesn’t seem to notice or care about.

Ya know what’s weird. Growing up I was infatuated with Nazis too. So infatuated that I even read Mein Kampf. The difference is I was infatuated with them because they scared the ever loving shit out of me and I wanted to know how the fuck they could destroy the country of my Oma und Opa on my mother’s side. I wanted to know everything I could about them so I could recognize them and tell others, “look out! These people are fucking Nazis and are trying to take over our country!”

As you’ve all seen from my posts here over the years I’ve been screaming these people are fucking Nazis! Look Out! I know you all know that too, but guess what, we are going to live through it. There is no hope. We are all well and truly fucked. This guy is not an anomaly. This guy is who we are as a country. This guy is who our President is. That’s what I have been posting : the USA has always been half fascist. The support of the USA for Franco after WWII is a case in point.
Mussolini, and Hitler were toppled but the USA supported and kept Franco and his fascist regime in power until Franco died in 1995.
Only then did the Spanish have the heroism to overthrow the fascists themselves.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

Franco died in 1975, not 1995, and the transition in Spain is generally considered a model of peaceful, orderly transitions to democracy, not anything being “overthrown.” PLEASE stop throwing your extremely faulty knowledge of Spanish history into this discussion. You’re embarrassing yourself and it has NOTHING to do with Trump or what happened in Virginia.

And people who know nothing about Spain blabbing away about it as if they did is one of my biggest pet peeves.

No one said there was a Trump/Spanish connection.
Reread. I said that the USA has supported fascist regimes, especially the Franco regime.
The USA has also supported the overthrow of the elected government in Chile…..under allende.
You know nothing about Spain, you obviously have never lived under Franco and have even less knowledge of US economic support of the Franco fascists.
Now go and learn some history and stop maliciously misinterpreting what I wrote.
          Yes, 1975……a typo.
Yes we know about the transition , yes we know about the attempted putsch under Tajero . yes we know about King juan carlos saving democracy.
You on the other hand know nothing about USA support for fascism and deliberately avoid the point.
So stop your obtuse ranting on misinterpreted posts.

In my grad student days in Europe, I also read Mein Kampf, and then a dozen other books about the Holocaust/Shoa…. Treblinka, Never Again, etc. It was for the same reasons! I wanted to KNOW, what took place during WWII to my family in detail. It was not taught in detail in the NYC Public School system, nor in my Hebrew School. It does not take much to recognize Racism, Anti-Semitism, Homophobia, Misogyny, and other forms of Hate and Intolerance, when it opens it mouth!!!

      • Rebecca Gardner

I read so many other books too like “The Black Angels: A History of the Waffen SS.” Thinking of all of this just jolted a memory back to me and I’m crying.

Back home in NYC I will never forget the day I saw the tattoo on the arm of my friend’s mom. As a little girl she was in Auschwitz. I managed all the computers for his company and one evening I found a file on the server that was a book written by his mom about her experience. To read a first hand account of how they were rounded up, taken from their homes at night, separated from their family forever, and shipped into the concentration camps was the most difficult, but eye opening, things I’ve ever read in my life. Nothing like that should ever happen again, especially in this country. To read about what actually happened through the eyes of a survivor, a child at the time, was so difficult. The horror is unimaginable. The utter horror must never happen again. How do we stop it here because it is going to happen here.

        • Hank

As a kid, my parents took me to see a play on Broadway called “The Wall”. It told the story of the Warsaw Ghetto and of the Polish Jews living, dying and being taken away by the Nazis. It was an emotional experience and an indelible one. NOW would be a time to bring it back to Broadway to SHOW modern day Americans, what precipice we are walking on, with Bannon/Gorka/Miller and Hair Drumpf in power!!!

That must have been amazing and heart-rending. Is that account available? I hope so.

Also, a book that struck home for me was “Hitler’s Willing Executioners” by Goldhagen. Today’s American could well be the average German of 1942-1945, especially if our POS POTUS gets us into a war of survival.

        • David Walker

For many years I worked a production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” for a regional theater. They produced it as a school matinee as well as with evening performances. About 2700 middle school kids saw it while they studied WWII. They also heard survivors of the camps tell their stories.

Of course, there was also the performance during which the kids who thought nazis were cool cheered when the Nazi-empowered thugs showed up to take everyone away and then threw pennies on the stage during curtain call. Sadly for them, kids had to sit with their schools in designated areas. It was determined who they were by where they sat. They weren’t sent to concentration camps as I would have wished, but punishment was doled out, we were assured.

      • juanjo54

June 2016 I took my two 16 year old nephews to Europe. One of the places we visited was the village where my grandparents left in 1918 to come to the United States via Germany. It is not a large place, about 2500 people right on the Hungarian/Romanian border. There is nothing remaining to show that at one time this area had a large Jewish population or for that matter, a German speaking population. Except for the few remaining head stones in the cemetary, nothing remains.

In Budapest we stayed in the old Jewish Quarter which is now becoming the trendy area with boutiques, restaurant and nightclubs. The two old synagogues remain and we visited the one I know my grandfather prayed at before he moved from there to Berlin and then on to Chicago. At the central synagogue down the street there was a display and memorial to the people deported and murdered by the Nazis.

This is what Nazis are and this is what they do. They justify any and all forms of violence against others based on some pseudo-scientific ideas about race. They must be opposed by all and all the time.

        • Hank

Everyone on JMG, has to realize, that we are ALL minorities, be it GLBT, Jewish, Muslim, African American, Hispanic, etc. WE are the ones, that the Nazis/White Supremacists are AFTER!!! WE have to stand up and “fight” for our right to EXIST in Peace!!!
As my avatar says: NEVER AGAIN

        • JackFknTwist

It’s been fairly obvious for a long time what the fascists do.
But it’s taken a long time for the Americans to wake up to their own love of fascism……and yes, Franco support was one example.

    • ColdCountry

He is part of America, he is some of us. I simply cannot surrender my country and its principles to his kind. They will not win. They cannot win. But we do have to be vigilant, we have to believe that it can happen again, and it can happen here if we are not on guard. We can not be lulled by our easy lives, and we have to realize that any future war WILL BE on our own soil. Schools need to show pictures of European cities in rubble, of Japan after the bombs, and they need to impress upon students that THIS will be US if there is ever another war. The consequences of war are unimaginable to most of us and we need to make them more real to people. So many think that things can’t get worse when they have NO IDEA what war is really like when it’s on their own doorstep.

    • Mike Solo

I did the same thing, as my grandmother was a Nazi and grandad part of the Whermacht. I wanted to know how they came to that, and why. Found out they were Volksdeutche from the Ukraine, so when their massive farm was collectivized and they went from being very wealthy to poverty, they kinda turned to their ethnic bretheren, the German invaders with glee.

    • JackFknTwist

@ Rebecca Gardner :Precisely. The US has been very reluctant to admit its dalliance with fascism……when i point out the US support for fascism under Franco….some idiot tries to say I was making a connection with Trump !
The USA has flirted with fascism for decades and has interfered with democratic govts in Latin America.
Now the white nazis are being more vocal under Trump……but they have always had a strong following in USA.

The murderer appears to come from quite the intellectual family. /snark

Last night I heard a reporter say that when she spoke to his mother, his mother was more or less out of it and didn’t really know what “alt-right’ and the such were all about.

    • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

When she said that she told him to “be careful,” she knew he was headed for trouble. Indeed, if he was on anti-psychotic meds and got kicked out of the Army, there’s no way in hell she didn’t know the likelihood of him driving across state lines to commit mayhem.

      • stuckinthewoods

His mother seemed unsophisticated. What could she have done even if she had feared he might do something? If you’ve ever been in that position you’ll remember being told by the police they can do nothing until something has actually happened. You try to give alarm or seek assistance but come up against the barrier that they’re legally an adult and haven’t done anything…yet. He’s ruined her life too.

        • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

The point of my comment is that I’m uncertain that she didn’t know what he was doing. He lived with her, had held a fascination with Nazis, was rejected by the Army, and was being treated with anti-psychotic meds. My heart does go out to her, and her life has been wrecked by his actions. She could not have prevented what he did, but to say that she never saw this coming is a very sad denial.

          • stuckinthewoods

Helplessly seeing something coming is awful. She has my sympathy.
(trump has ruined the word ‘sad’ for me, but, it is…)

        • Strkr

I agree and said so in another post. all of the interviews that I have seen regarding the reporter and the mother cut out suddenly I wonder if they stopped recording and she had started to cry?

          • stuckinthewoods

Good point. Seeing her brings back when the police arrived to tell my mother about my sister.

The real threat to society and the real terrorists of this country are homegrown evil devils… but instead of acknowledging it they deflect it and have you terrified of others who aren’t really a threat to you or your family’s safety…

    • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

All of them deflect to blame BLM and ANTIFA as the REAL terrorists, despite the fact that over a thousand Nazis showed up armed to the teeth while shouting Nazi slogans.

      • TrueWords

EXACTLY…marching down the streets with weapons with NO regard for human safety or the semblance of respect for the citizens of the town…this is exactly how “white privilege and power” plays out here in America

As someone asked yesterday: how (the fuck!) did this NAZI get in the U.S in the first place? (Whatever happened to “extreme vetting”?)

  • JackFknTwist

Yes it was a Trump rally.
But these fascists are already in the White House:
    Bannon
    Goreck
    Miller
    Trump [aka David Duke.]

And the continued silence of the Tory enablers in the Congress shows the widespread support for fascism in the USA.

Nothing new there, after 40years supporting the fascist Franco regime in Spain.

    • Gustav2

As long as the Fascists facilitate tax cuts for the rich it is all good.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Your comment is kind of all over the place. Three things that stand out:
What does Spain have to do with it? Trump could probably not find Spain on a labelled map and I doubt he knows hardly anything about who Franco was.
We don’t have Tories in the USA. We do have Republicans, but nobody refers to them as tories.
      Gorka, not Goreck.

      • JackFknTwist

First, the support of the USA for Franco shows the embedded love of fascism in the USA.
Second, Trump is a sympathiser of the fascists as demonstrated by relying on David Duke’s support and his refusal to condemn the white Alt-Right scum who organized the rally.
Third, I don’t give a flying f*** about how to spell the fascist Gorek’s name.

Last, I don’t have time to set everything out in detail, “the task of filling up the blanks I’d rather leave to you.’ ( The Mikado, Gilbert & Sullivan.)

      • JackFknTwist

USa supported fascist Spain for 40 years ….that’s what.

        Yes you do have “tories”……

    • Statistics Palin

Who’s “Goreck?” Do you mean “Gorka?”

      • JackFknTwist

      • That_Looks_Delicious

The Pentagon was officially denying some of Trump’s comments about Venezuela yesterday. Some (but not all) prominent military leaders have attempted to tone down his North Korea comments. State Department is leaking all over the place that they’re at their wits’ end with Trump’s antics, but nothing from Tillerson himself.

*It’s in a good cause, but I must point out that sometimes this kind of thing does spill over into irresponsible doxxing of misidentified people, or illegal or disproportionate harassment of a target that can feed the right wing martyr complex.

Does Virginia allow for the death sentence for SECOND DEGREE MURDER???
    Anyone know yet?

    • Hank

Let us wait until, the District Attorney sifts through the possible charges. Yesterdays arrest, was based upon what the police just charged him with. In my mind, this WAS Domestic Terrorism!

    • Ken M

      J. Dahmer didn’t get the death penalty, and that ended “well.”

    • clay

No, only for first, usually with “heinous” somewhere attached.

  • teedofftaxpayer

I haven’t heard what the charges will be but one hopes it will be 1) One Count of Murder, 2) 19 Counts of Attempted Murder because in any other situations that what would happen.

    • Tulle Christensen

Assault with a deadly weapon is also available

      • teedofftaxpayer

Yep, but will they really use the most serious ones?

    • Bj Lincoln

Attempted murder is reserved for those who are not white.

    • Reality.Bites

Are there not federal terrorism charges that should be pursued?

If nothing else, doesn’t crossing state lines with intent to commit a crime make it federal?

With the current administration, especially the Attorney General, don’t count on it.

  • Bj Lincoln

My brother has had a fascination with the Nazis and war in general for as long as I can remember. He admires what they stood for and is all for getting rid of those who don’t fit the ‘model’ . when I worked with disabled kids we got into how they were a drain on society and should have been killed at birth. He had a picture of Hitler in his living room for years. I can’t bring myself to call him right now. He has mellowed some but it may be he is tired of people giving him shit. At one point he had an entire AS uniform with everything including side arm socks and underwear. It all fit. He got so passed because I refused to take a picture of him in it. He did donate it to some museum but I bet he has a picture somewhere.

    • edrex

wow. i’m so sorry. seriously. take care of yourself.

      Ow, sorry about that!

My partner is the other way around; he can describe every war in, like, history, but always thinks the liberals should have destroyed the fascists in every case, digging them out root and branch.

    • boobert

Wow, another horrible brother story. Mine was a real pain, but he never tried to kill me or admired hitler. His was more of a mental abuse to me and my sister. That stopped when I finally stood up to him and punched him at her wedding, lol

      • Jim Gallagher-Barker

From the picture, he appears to be a throat-punched Nazi. This is a good thing.

  • DoctorDJ

    He’s Christian.
    1. He only needs to say he’s sorry and all will be forgiven.
    2. Satan made him do it.
    3. Radical Islamic terrorists just killed a bunch of people over there.
    4. SQUIRREL!!!

  • Buford

I’ll state the obvious… the headline should not be that he was infatuated with Nazism… the headline should be that he was blocked from joining the Army because he was on psych meds. THAT’s the big news from that interview. The fact that he was infatuated by Nazism is pretty fucking obvious, isn’t it….?!?!?!

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

I know moms love their kids but I’m really tired of them throwing society under the bus for them. She reminds me of that woman who let her obviously troubled son play with guns and he shot her first then went after a school full of kids.

    • Lumpy Gaga

“James. James. James. Why are you tinting your windows? James? James, do we need a timeout?”

      • Tulle Christensen

Tinting windows is not always a bad thing, my better half always got the windows tinted as dark as allowed by law, it reduced his “driving while brown” pullovers by about 2/3

He still got pulled over as the allowed tinting on the front window was not dark enough to conceal that he was a dark skinned Lantino

        • Treant

My uncle was extraordinarily light-sensitive. In addition to 80% sunglasses, he would have needed tinted windows to drive. Which he couldn’t, being blind in one eye and seeing badly in the other, but…

I inherited some of that, but a good pair of 60% gray glasses work fine.

  • Regardless of his mental condition, I suppose he carries guns.
Someone probably told him to ram his car into “enemies” of the Nazis.

    • David Walker

You’re probably right. I was thinking more along the lines of an act to encourage acceptance. “This will impress the cool kids.” And, of course, the cool kids completely disown him, but (naturally) with lies. Even a “no one told him to do that” would have been better than the anti-Trump libtard bit.

  • Jerry Kott

I get the impression that he may have named his favorite dildo- Adolf.
Repression can make you do strange things.

  • Jim Gallagher-Barker

My inner HR/Benefits manager cringes at the teacher’s statements re the anti-psychotic meds. I’m pretty sure teachers sign HIIPPA agreements re their students’ medical information.

On the other hand, now we won’t be surprised at the defense put forth by the little Nazi shit’s attorneys.

Of course we have a database of people who are potential Islamic terrorists that enter the country and those whose activities make them high risk to carry out terrorist attacks in the name of Islam, and I have no problem with that as long as that info is not used against them in regular daily activities).

How about putting those who represent potential right wing terrorists in that same database?

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

The one thing that keeps popping up in my mind, during most (if not all) these protest, is the median age of those participating. A good number, dare I say the majority, seem to be under the age of 35; which for me is a big red flag. You see, when I went to school in the Jurassic period AKA 60’s & 70’s, I was taught Canadian History, then North American and in High School, World History (both Ancient and Modern). These were mandatory courses, not electives. We were taught about the wars, the cost of them in lives and culture. The holocaust, the killing fields, etc. Fast forward to the mid 80’s when courses like History became electives in HS. I realize this is just an observation, but in my humble opinion, it can’t be ignored. Most young people, teen to 35, seem oblivious to what came before and thus are easy prey to the liars and purveyors of hate. Just my two cents.

  • DonnaLee

Oh “mental health issues’, like we didn’t see that coming at all….

  • JackFknTwist

Two Chinese tourists were arrested in Berlin for giving a Nazi salute two weeks ago.

In the USA marchers carry Nazi flags, wear Hitler T shirts, give “Heil Trump” chants and salutes, chant fascist slogans and assault and kill antifascist protesters.

Is this what USA calls “freedom” ? Freedom for the fascists ?

USA tolerates and supports the fascists…….they are even in the White House ….Bannon/Gorka/ Trump, aka David Duke.
USA supported Franco for 40 years. Learn some history of Spain.
USA toppled the elected Allende in Chile, and supported the fascism that followed and the mass killings of Pinochet.

Come on let’s hear the US deniers.
