VIRGINIA: Governor Declares State Of Emergency, State Police Declare Nazi Rally An “Unlawful Assembly”

The New York Times reports:

The governor of Virginia declared a state of emergency in Charlottesville on Saturday as a protest of a plan to remove a statue of a Confederate general turned violent, leaving several people injured and threatening to plunge the area into chaos.

Protesters clashed in the historic college town, as white nationalists — some waving Confederate flags, chanting Nazi-era slogans, wearing helmets and carrying shields — converged on the statue of Robert E. Lee in the city’s Emancipation Park and the surrounding streets. The protest was the apparent culmination of more than a year of debate and division over the fate of the statue.

Saturday’s rally was supposed to start at noon, but the scene at the park had grown chaotic by late morning, with white nationalists and neo-Nazis facing off with Black Lives Matter demonstrators and other counterprotesters. Inside the park, which was encircled with metal barricades and the police, hundreds of white nationalists gathered around the Lee statue, chanting phrases like “You will not replace us,” and “Jew will not replace us.”

Karl Marx saw this phenomenon before:

The lower middle class, the small manufacturer, the shopkeeper, the artisan, the peasant, all these fight against the bourgeoisie, to save from extinction their existence as fractions of the middle class. They are therefore not revolutionary, but conservative. Nay more, they are reactionary, for they try to roll back the wheel of history. If by chance, they are revolutionary, they are only so in view of their impending transfer into the proletariat; they thus defend not their present, but their future interests, they desert their own standpoint to place themselves at that of the proletariat.

The “dangerous class”, [lumpenproletariat] the social scum, that passively rotting mass thrown off by the lowest layers of the old society, may, here and there, be swept into the movement by a proletarian revolution; its conditions of life, however, prepare it far more for the part of a bribed tool of reactionary intrigue.

Here’s a term, originally from the Spanish civil war, that’s timely again. Given its coincidence with our troubles with Russia and NK, it’s plausible.

A fifth column is any group of people who undermine a larger group from within, usually in favor of an enemy group or nation. The activities of a fifth column can be overt or clandestine. Forces gathered in secret can mobilize openly to assist an external attack. This term is also extended to organized actions by military personnel. Clandestine fifth column activities can involve acts of sabotage, disinformation, or espionage executed within defense lines by secret sympathizers with an external force.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_column

    • Gustav2

In the ‘neo-political dictionary’ a fifth column can only be made up of Liberals and other Commies.

      • coram nobis

Came in handy for the other side.

Emilio Mola, a Nationalist general during the Spanish Civil War, told a journalist in 1936 that as his four columns of troops approached Madrid, a “fifth column” (Spanish: Quinta columna) of supporters inside the city would support him and undermine the Republican government from within.

        • Gustav2

WE know that, but the right has messed with every poli sci definition I knew.

          • coram nobis

The right was always lousy at history. The left always needed better organization, however.

  • Bj Lincoln

The argument over to remove/not remove the statues in my house was added to by a neighbor last night. He made a good point and after much discussion we came to an agreement on how to handle the situation. If the south wants to keep them as part of their history then each one should have a placard telling the truth about what each person did and why. It is fine to celebrate the history but not fine to celebrate the wrong side as if it were right. The Germans have several Holocaust museums to remind them of the dangers of the past. We too can do this with the statues and memorial lands. People need to know the reason for the start of the Civil War. Not just the end of it. They were very different for different reasons.
As for these KKK wannabes, I am sure they will get shoved back in their hole with the old guard in time. There are more Americans who want peace, unity and diversity than uneducated morons who have come crawling out of the woodwork thanks to Drumpf’s call for division and lack of respect. He opened the door to this but real Americans will close it just like we did in the past.

    • UrsusArctos

These “Lost Cause” monuments were NEVER about honoring the figures depicted. They are post-reconstruction reminders to PoC that the white folks are back in the driver’s seat.
The battlefields, cemeteries, and significant sites ARE important to maintain and interpret. Every UDC statue in a courthouse square fails to meet that test. They’re not monuments to heritage. They’re a finger in the eye of their victors. I doubt making that plain on every “Confederate” statue would go over much better than removing it. It’s pretty much a case by case evaluation of the reason for that statue being there and it’ll not happen in many places.

      • Bj Lincoln

I’m sure our solution would not go over well. I think they should all come down but the wife sees it differently. I do believe a case by case may be the best way.

        • UrsusArctos

The reason the memorials have worked in Germany is that 2-2.5 generations have been shown what was done in vivid horrifying detail. The US missed that step when reconstruction failed.
If you have walked a concentration camp ground and not felt the reality of what people can do, you fail to qualify as human. We missed the chance to embed the same experience in the post-war generations.

          • stuckinthewoods

But it’s not too late. Locally Richmond is trying to cash in on historical tourism including the Slave Trail. Monticello no longer gilds and glosses over slavery as it did when I was a child. Truth of the atrocity is actually more available now than it used to be. Localities are realizing there is interest and trying to develop that even if it isn’t pretty.

    • Reality.Bites

As you say, Germany has museums. Pretty sure they don’t contain statues of Hitler, let alone any created AFTER his defeat.

      • Bj Lincoln

No statues. Only what he did.

    • stuckinthewoods

That is one of the suggestions presently about the monuments in Richmond, to present information explaining their presence. If you want to know history you can research it but frankly most passersby aren’t going to go to the trouble so it makes sense to elucidate on site.

Easy to sit back and think the locals (counter-protestors) should be quiet and dignified, turn their backs, be clever, blah blah blah, but I’m trying to imagine an armed “Christian Militia” going through my own neighborhood.

We knew when we moved here we were surrounded by Drumpf supporters, many still have signs in the yard. It didn’t register that everyone is white. I have not lived in an all white neighborhood since I was very young and this is uncomfortable. Our immediate neighbors seem fine with us but we haven’t put up flags or anything gay. I don’t know my heritage except my connection to Lincoln. I could have a great mixture of races in these old bones. I am not a christian either. I would be scared to death if an armed “Christian Militia” came to my neighborhood.

  • let me just add that i really, really hate the term “white nationalists.” for one thing, this nation sits on property owned originally by a bunch of folks who were anything but white. for another, anybody who claims the label ‘white’ in this country does so bc their ancestors came from a different country on another continent. go back to Europe, if it means that much to you. and finally, if there is a real American nationalism, part of it, an essential part, is diversity. including diversity of race and religion.

I agree, but disagree because “White Nationalist” is what these assholes call themselves, defining themselves by their alleged lily-white heritage. That’s pretty much the only claim, specious though it is, of superiority they have to cling to.

Wish someone had thought to change the plaque on that statue to honor Lee’s career in the United States Army.
