VIRGINIA: 20 Year-Old Ohio Man Charged With Murder In Charlottesville White Supremacist Terror Attack

The Washington Post reports:

Video recorded at the scene of the car crash shows a 2010 gray Dodge Challenger accelerating into crowds on a pedestrian mall, sending bodies flying — and then reversing at high speed, hitting yet more people. Witnesses said the street was filled with people opposed to the white nationalists who had come to town bearing Confederate flags and anti-Semitic epithets. A 32-year-old woman was killed, according to police, who said they were investigating the crash as a criminal homicide. The driver of the Challenger was taken into custody and charges were pending, said Al Thomas, the Charlottesville police chief.

The car is registered to 20-year-old James Alex Fields of Ohio, according to vehicle registration records reviewed by The Washington Post. Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail Superintendent Martin Kumer told The Post that a man with the same name and age was booked Saturday on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, failure to stop for an accident involving a death, and hit-and-run. Kumer said Fields is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Charlottesville General District Court. Records show Fields last lived in Maumee, Ohio, about 15 miles southwest of Toledo.

All afternoon Trump supporters have been pumping out fake names on social media and claiming that the driver was actually a “Trump-hating leftist.” Fields is a registered Republican. So much for that.

  • leastyebejudged

Looks how I expected him to. You’re typical southern man-child idiot.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Only if “southern” is used in a metaphorical sense. Maumee is almost in Michigan.

      • Paula

        Its something in the water.

    • Banu To You

The deadly Nazi is from Ohio now but originally a good old boy in Kentucky. His mom said he told her he was going to Virginia to a rally for Trump. The Feds might charge him harder than Virginia since he drove from another state to commit crimes.

      • leastyebejudged

CBS says “Bloom, who became visibly upset as she learned of the injuries and deaths at the rally, said she and her son had just moved to the Toledo area from the northern Kentucky city of Florence. She said that’s where Fields grew up. She relocated to Ohio for work.”

        • Gustav2

A lot of “Ohioans” have relocated from Kentucky, West Virginia and points South for work. Many are not Underground Railroad folks.

I had an argument once with an “expert” on American accents who used non-natives Woody Hayes and Dwight Yoakam as examples of the Columbus Ohio accent. Woody was from rural SE Ohio and Dwight was from Kentucky, he worked all thru jr high school to develop his particular flat accent. The both had just a bit of Southern and what Columbusites would identify as South or West Side “Hillbilly” before the 1960’s and the explosion of the suburbs.

  • bkmn

Part of me would like to see a swift implementation of the death penalty, since it is such a good deterrent.

  • AJA

Hopefully this mug shot goes right in to the annals of history with McVeighs… as both are radicalized right-wing terrorists and murderers.

    • (((GC)))

Hopefully the murderer will receive an appropriate punishment, and be forgotten in infamy.

      • Taylor Bixler

I would guess county police are keeping him in solitary or he might not last the night.

        • Todd20036

Indeed. Personally, I hope he lives a long, long life…

          Behind bars.

Let him live so long he realizes that he proved nothing from his terrorist act other than he threw his life away because someone else said his skin color made him special.

    • DN

I also hope the charming folks from last night’s torchlight parade are named & shamed.

Let’s call it for what it is!!

Three people have been killed and over 20 injured by James Alex Fields, Jr.

This is not a time to mince words when you talk about it on social media or with friends or family in the days to come…please call it for what it is.

Compare it to the events listed below and many others:

This is NO different than the Oklahoma City bombing, the killings in Charlotte, the murders done by the DC Sniper, VA Tech killings, the Boston Bombing, the Orlando Massacre, etc…

    • Steverino

During the “red scare” Cold War era of the 1940s and 1950s, the government mercilessly went after leftists and citizens who were considered “communist symps,” “fellow travelers,” et al. I have felt for 50 years that this country has always been in far more danger of going fascist than communist. It is high time the government went after these home-grown anti-American fascists with the same zeal they went after home-grown communists, and ruin their lives in the same fashion. Let what happened to white supremacist Tom Metzger be the guide.

      • I choo-choo-choose you

Yep, I remember reading that they blackballed and destroyed the careers of many actors who, without proof, they claimed were commie sympathizers.

        • Steverino

Indeed, that’s the way it works in this country. “Suspected” communists had their lives and careers ruined, based upon nothing but innuendo and / or past associations, but known, unreconstructed white supremacists and neo-Nazis such as Tony Perkins and David Duke get invited to appear on cable “news” programs for “perspective” and “balance.” Hillary Clinton gets investigated well beyond the point of ruining her presidential aspirations, also based upon nothing but innuendo and suspicion, but a proven con man and crook like Donald Trump gets elected president, and his supporters say “meh.”

          • David Walker

“Maybe we can cut you a good deal if you’ll just tell us names of a couple of your friends.”

    • pablo

Three people? Aren’t two from a helicopter crash?

  • geepster

All of me would like to see a swift implementation of the death penalty, since it is such a good deterrent.

    • JCF

      It really isn’t, though.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

Also it’s way more expensive to keep them on death row. And it seems one is more likely to get whacked in general pop depending on which state you’re in.

      • disqus_LfP7ofaP87

Doesn’t matter that it isn’t an effective “deterrent”.

Shouldn’t be considered “a deterrent”, should be considered “Justice”, plain and simple.

You’re way the fuck too merciful. Let the little bastard age in a cage.

Not to be petty, but it’s no surprise that this asshole drove a redneck muscle car.

OK, it’s petty. I admit it.

    • I’ve heard Trump called a lot of things, but never a fake savior.

      • jonfromcalifornia

Well, the way the evangelicals talk about him, he might as well be their “savior”. He’s supposed to “save” them same-sex marriage, abortion, Obamacare, taxes, etc.

      • Acronym Jim

I believe Alex Jones is the false prophet which would make Trump the anti-christ. It’s interesting, I grew up hearing about how the anti-christ would be a king of lies who seizes absolute power to bring about the apocalypse. The same types of people who were proclaiming that theory are now lying, stealing, proto-fascist, war-mongering Trump’s base.

    • Hank

VA does have the Death Penalty

      • (((GC)))

That won’t bring the murdered people back.

      • Tulle Christensen

He is currently charged with 2nd degree murder, so unless it is upgraded or something like terrorism is added he will not get the death penalty

        • (((GC)))

They should call it what it was: domestic terrorism.

          • Tulle Christensen

Well yea, but I am not the prosecutor, so you are telling the wrong guy

        • jsmukg

That’s nauseating. There needs to be enormous public demonstration for that charge to be changed to aggravated murder and terroristic activity.

          • Tulle Christensen

With a person in a car driving into a crowd it is hard to prove first degree, unless there were witnesses in the car or a written manifesto the forming of the intent before hitting the gas is hard. second is easy just play the tapes.

            terrorism charge should be pursued

          • jsmukg

I disagree. This was obviously planned, and is a well-known terrorist tactic used many times before. He has no defense against first degree other than ‘it was an accident,’ which we all know will not fly even in a US court. Laughable to say that anyone climbing into a car, aiming it straight at a crowd of people, and gunning it is not executing a premeditated crime. The backing up and doing it again is particularly useful to first-degree…and the Nazi shit should be quite enough for aggravating circumstances to be added.

        • zhera

It should at least be 1st degree murder. Planned, executed, and running off after without helping victims.

        • greenmanTN

How is this not 1st Degree? There was certainly premeditation. He started the car, aimed it, then hit the gas pedal. Then apparently he BACKED UP!

God knows prosecutors have gone for 1st degree on much less evidence.

          • Tulle Christensen

I personally do not doubt the first degreeness of the act, I am just telling you what he has been charged with and that a good lawyer can plant doubt about if any intent had been formed before he hit the gas

he will no doubt get a good lawyer

yes, and did those prosecutors get a first degree conviction when the defendant had a top notch lawyer?

          • greenmanTN

I wasn’t accusing you of being behind the charges, ☺️, just questioning the rationale behind them. They may change later.

I’m not a lawyer, just some doofus who has read way too many legal thrillers! He will probably end up with a decent defense lawyer paid for by far right groups, not because they care about him personally but because they don’t want his actions to reflect badly on themselves, innocent little Free Speech patriots that they are.

          • John30013

It all depends on what the prosecutors think they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt. This may be an initial charge that they will upgrade as more evidence becomes available.

          • Tulle Christensen

if they can find someone who he told about his plans before hand, or get the jail house snitch to get him to admit he planned it in advanced then I am sure they will upgrade the charge to capital murder

        • lymis

How the hell can deliberately running over a bunch of people be “second-degree” ANYTHING?

          • Tulle Christensen

It is not the act, it is the intent. The prosecutor has to prove beyond a shadow of the doubt the murder was intended before the murder was committed

The have to get him or get someone to testify that he told them he decided to run his car into the crowd before he did it

Or find a blog post or a written diary that is what he was going to do

the amount of time before doing the murder and forming the intent can be very short, just a second or two or can be planed years in advance

    • Frostbite

      Countdown until presidential pardon.. 3..2..

“Look what you made me do!”…

      • Nowhereman

Exactly. All those children who died at Sandy Hook and all the anti-fascists who were mowed down today were just actors on George Soros’ payroll. Is Soros the only wealthy progressive they know of?

        • jonfromcalifornia

Yup. George Soros is the one that Faux News keeps harping on constantly. That’s where these idiots get their stupid notions from.

          • Nowhereman

And of course nevermind that most of the filthy rich are conservatives.

        • Octoberfurst

Apparently Soros spends his days paying people to pretend to be victims and staging fake terrorist events to make right-wingers look bad. And yes I am sure he is the only wealthy progressive that the Teatards know about.

          • Paul

Affirmative action DOES discriminate, but it’s not against whites. Asians are actually the ones at an extreme disadvantage:

            https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/02/us/affirmative-action-battle-has-a-new-focus-asian-americans.html

“But with his high G.P.A., nearly perfect SAT score and activities — debate team, tennis captain and state orchestra — Mr. Jia believes he should have had a fair shot at Harvard, Princeton, Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania. Those Ivy League colleges rejected him after he applied in the fall of 2015.”

If Trump was smart, he’d be playing from this angle. He might get back some of the Asian vote that the GOP used to get pre-Obama.

White straight guys used to be able to get laid just for being white. They’re losing that social capital and have to work at it now.

        • That_Looks_Delicious

I don’t know about that. I think Bill Maher has a point about how nowadays it seems like everybody’s getting laid if you believe advertising, music videos, etc., but hype =/= reality. Several studies show millenials are actually having much less sex than the baby boomers did at their age. But I don’t think there was ever another time like the 70s (late 60s thru early 80s really) for getting laid, either before or after, so I don’t know if there was ever a time when “white straight guys” could just expect to get laid. And I’m not convinced that it’s any easier for socially awkward non-white guys to get laid.

    • Michael R

This guy is in Indianapolis ? Is it the same person ?

The DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, generally referred to as a “DD 214”, is a document of the United States Department of Defense, issued upon a military service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States

If I knew how to do it, I’d send a video tour of my neighborhood showing all the Trump signs and Confederate flags in front of houses. (And the occasional three “crosses” in the front yard.) And they start all the government meetings with a CHRISTIAN prayer.

Remember the 2005 Toledo riot started with a Nazi rally.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Sounds terrifying. If you’re interested, you might be able to get Freedom From Religion Foundation (or maybe The Satanic Temple) to get the government meetings to stop starting with a prayer or at least they’d have to include other religions including Satanism, paganism, Islam, etc.

This is a perfect illustration of how the “history” or “heritage” excuse for the confederate flags is total BS. I saw them all over truck stops and gas stations in Ohio, Iowa, Nebraska, West Virginia, etc. on a recent roadtrip. None of those states were ever part of the Confederacy. The confederate flag is the new Nazi flag and everybody knows exactly what it means.

      • Bluto

Indeed. West Virginia specifically ceded from Virginia to NOT be in the confederacy.

        • I choo-choo-choose you

Yep, I was born in WV and left there when I was young. When I once visited I asked someone I knew, “Why the hell are you flying rebel flags? WV fought with the North!” She replied, “To show that we don’t like black people.”

A long repost, but vital: Navy vet Jim Wright’s Facebook post today:

I keep trying to get to a point in this insanity where I can write a piece, but it’s all going sideways

    So, instead, some observations:

    – Fuck racist terrorists. This isn’t free speech. You don’t
bring guns, clubs, torches, and shields to peaceful demonstration. This
is terrorism. These people are terrorists. A car just plowed into a
crowd of anti-racist protesters. I’ve watched the video. It was
deliberate. It was attempted murder. This is terrorism and should be
called such. So far as a I know, the terrorists have not been caught
    yet. Fuck those cowards.

    – Fuck the Confederacy. Every symbol of the Confederacy,
every monument, every flag, every statue, should be pulled down,
uprooted, smashed into rubble, and burned. Fuck Robert E. Lee, he was a
traitor, pull down his statue, melt it down, recast it into urinals.
    Piss on the Confederacy.

    – Fuck Nazis. I don’t want to hear any social justice warrior
bullshit about not confronting these racist shitbags with violence if
necessary. They get punched in the head, they take a lead pipe over the
skull, well it just plain sucks to be a Nazi. I’m not going to sugar
coat that for you. Nazis are Nazis, they deserve nothing but a boot in
their yellow teeth and punch in the throat. They’re getting off easy.
Our grandfathers hunted Nazis down and EXTERMINATED them and it’s to our
everlasting shame that we let this cancer regrow in our midst. Fuck
    Nazis.

    – Fuck Trump. Trump owns this. Republicans own this. This
isn’t the Alt-Right, this IS the right. These sons of bitches are
literally shouting “Sieg Trump” in the streets of Charlottesville right
    now. Fuck Trump.

These people are the vile residue, the foul distillation, of
every failed hateful rotten-tooth inbred ideology in history. Don’t let
them hide. Don’t make excuses for them. Get them out in the open. Make
them own it. They have jobs — some of them. They have parents and kids
and neighbors. They have churches. The Constitution gives them a right
to their hate, but not a right to be free of the consequences. Publish
their pictures. Publish their license plates. Get them out in the open.
Pull their hoods off. They’re standing out there shouting hate, flying
the flag of treason, their arms upraised in the Hitler salute. Make them
own it. Make them infamous. Don’t let them hide.

Exactly. Fuck dRUMPf. Fuck Rethugs. MAKE THEM OWN THIS.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

melt it down, recast it into urinals. Piss on the Confederacy.

I also venture to guess that they do not see the ideology of the “alt-right” as fascist in any way shape or form, but purely patriotic and right as opposed to the rest of us who are so very wrong.

  • Emile Jumean

I had the misfortune of seeing that photograph of the moment of impact with the crowd. Absolutely horrific and made me sick to my stomach, but the person who took the shot deserves an award for technical merit alone. It was an amazing, yet harrowing, image of an extremely brutal and gut-wrenching moment in time.

All of that said, though, I wish I never saw the photo in the first place. My heart couldn’t take it.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Agreed. I was recently hit by a car around the same speed. The impact trajectory was the same. Still dealing with it in many ways. I was very lucky, but like everyone who has ever had trauma happen, an image hits the replay button. And that shot is going to be replaying for dozens of people for years.

What a sad day for America. I hope all those injured have a speedy recovery. One death is one too many. I hope too that this becomes a watershed moment. Trump and his supporters and enablers own this, and every registered republican bears a share of responsibility. I know there are people who will say you can’t smear all republicans with the same brush, just as you can’t smear all muslims because of the terrorist acton of a few radical extremists. to that I would say, no. You can’t smear all Americans because of the terrorist actions of a few radical extremists. The GOP? Well, Islamic terrorists also have their political enablers. Hamas has been accused of supporting terrorism, as has the government of Iran, and the Saudi’s, and I certainly would add the GOP and their members. If you are a republican and you’re genuinely horrified at what your part has become you can leave it. It won’t kill you to do so. And if you can’t go against your party, well then you may as well admit you support domestic terrorism.

Virginia does have death penalty, though it takes awhile for all the appeals to be gone through. Virginia also does not have parole. If you are sentenced to 20 years you do 20 years, minus some good time credit that I think can’t go more than 20% or so of the sentence. So it the sentence is 20 you do 16 or so at least. Depends on th judge and the jurisdiction. Some places like Arlington and Alexandria are almost civilized but the more traditional places can be positively antediluvian, or at least antebellum.

    Two officers were killed.

You know last Sunday I went to vacuum the living room and when I plugged in the vacuum did not start

Checking plugs around the house three did not work, so to take a look I start to turn off the circuit breakers. Found a bad plug, replaced it. Turned on the breakers

My computer power supply started to smoke, and was destroyed, It was plugged into a different circuit that the one that had a problem.

Did some checking, found no connection to the two events, ordered a new power supply and now everything is fine

I can vacuum and surf the net

Sometimes two events that seem to be connected are not

    • JCF

Is this the downed helicopter that Gov McAuliffe was citing? Or a different one?

      • stuckinthewoods

It is. The Governor and First Lady also knew them personally because apparently they had been their pilots on state trips.

Trump should be removed from office NOW (even before Mueller presents his findings)–for repeated OBSTRUCTION of justice, for unparalleled GRAFT, for relentless and proven pathological LYING (including deliberate slander), for calling on the DoJ to hound his political opposition (yet another attack on the rule of law), for recklessly endangering national and world security, for frequent and increasing signs of mental impairment, for refusing to clearly condemn NAZIS, and for his own unmitigated HATE-MONGERING!!

Do NOT let Trump’s failure to denounce NAZIS slide!!

      • Cuberly

        Sure sounds like it.

      • ohbear1957

What I found with a basic search for “Weaponized Autism:”
        1. “an expression referring to the impressive capabilities of socially awkward, tech-savvy internet users, typically associated with those who frequent imageboards like 4chan and 8chan.”
        2. “The focused application of nerdiness, computer tech savvy, and social awkwardness in the cyber pursuit of justice, payback, or even serving the public interest.”
3, “When you have literally weaponized autism by using people with mental disorders to start violence at your opposition’s rallies.”

It’s upsetting to me that they’re linking autism with doing harm to others. If anything, people with autism are more likely to be the victims of crimes – not the perpetrators. https://www.autism-society.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Advocates_Attorneys_and_Judges.pdf

Fun fact: first-degree murder in the Commonwealth of Virginia carries the death penalty. Hey, if it was good enough for terrorists like Mir Aimal Kasi and John Allen Muhammad, prosecuted by the Commonwealth and subsequently put down, then it’s good enough for this guy.

Fiat Justita Ruat Coelum. Let justice be done though the heavens fall.

Requires either proof of specific intent, or some depraved disregard for human live under a felony-murder theory, see, e.g., Tison v. Arizona. Do one better, get that fucking Orange POS out of the white house.

      • billbear1961

I’ve already said that, LC, but YOU encourage me to repeat myself (not that I need lots of encouragement!).

This is PART of what I posted earlier in this thread:

When Buffy confronts him about it, he replies cryptically “I have my reasons”…then we the audience see the flashback: Hell-Hound Guy: “Will you go to the prom w/ me?” Girl: “No.”

I bet such scene can explain about 3/4ths of the Alt-Right (and 99.99% of the MRA portion thereof!)

Dean Heller?! Ain’t he havin’ a hell of a month.

      • safari

The logo thing is a mess. From what I have heard (1) he’s holding upside down, and (2) it’s supposed to be crossing Fasces, and (3) that group is a splinter group of another group which fought online, etc., etc. But the group above said that they were just giving out their shields and that he’s not actually one of them despite having a history with them.

        • Jukesgrrl

Giving it to … whom? Who needs a shield who is not up to no good, for Christ sake? By the way, Alex Jones has now declared this thing a false flag operation, so I guess liberals are officially to blame now. I bet Hillary planned the whole event.

        You are a douchbag.

My boyfriend wears a cap 90% of the time. Always facing forward. I really don’t enjoy learning a kiss is coming by seeing a sharp(ish) object coming for my eyes.

And he’s the one with a full head of hair (although he shaves the back and sides) while I shave everything, having reached that stage of having some hair everywhere on my head, but not enough of it anywhere but sides and back to make it look good.

We need to figure out a way to make young, hot models start shaving the TOP of their heads and about an inch or two down the back and sides. That’s a style I bet 90% of us here could rock! Think of all the different fashions there’ve been over the years. Think of all the ones that we’d look back on and shudder (virtually the entire 1980s, for example). ALL these fashions became popular because ANYTHING (or nothing) looks good on young hot people.

          • greenmanTN

I had flowing locks in my 20s, (I thank Jesus the braided rat tail I was planning never came to pass), now not so much… so I either wear a hat or bandanna, which I tie into a doo-rag when I’m working outside. My favorite is the light green one, but I’ve forgotten the old hankie code so I’m not sure what I’m advertising for. Chlorophyll bottom? Zucchini Top?

          • greenmanTN

Well, the bandanna is light green, closer to lime I guess, and I’m working in the garden so “will Grow dinner” fits, kind of.

I haven’t had a garden for a couple of years, life got in the way, but I borrowed a Rototiller from elderly neighbor, then in his late 70s. My aunt, at the same time, pointed me toward someone she knew who had boxes and boxes of broken tile. So I put mosaic tile paths through my (small) garden. So the elderly neighbor came ambling up and asked “What are you doing?” (I thought it was rather obvious.) “I’m putting tile paths in the garden.”

“”Well isn’t that something,” which in Southern Speak translates as “That boy ain’t right!” I gave them produce from the garden so I got downgraded to “eccentric.” https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/86e0080d949841d5563dfcaa41d11fc13b541e7bd08135c49e89ecd859f922aa.jpg

“Mercer strongly supported the nomination of Jeff Sessions to be Trump’s Attorney General. Many civil-rights groups opposed the nomination, pointing out that Sessions has in the past expressed racist views.Mercer, for his part, has argued that the Civil Rights Act, in 1964, was a major mistake. According to the onetime Renaissance employee, Mercer has asserted repeatedly that African-Americans were better off economically before the civil-rights movement. (Few scholars agree.) He has also said that the problem of racism in America is exaggerated. The source said that, not long ago, he heard Mercer proclaim that there are no white racists in America today, only black racists. (Mercer, meanwhile, has supported a super PAC, Black Americans for a Better Future, whose goal is to “get more Blacks involved in the Republican Party.”)”

We need to consider these questions even though I think many will find the answers really depressing.

    1. 58% of white voters voted for Trump. What % of them are secretly happy this is happening?

    2. How do we define fringe in terms of numerics? When most people say fringe, most people think in terms of a few percentage points. If half of the 58% are OK with this, then we’re talking 29%. If a quarter then it’s around 15%, that is more than a few percentage points.

    3. Most churches won’t excommunicate or confront any of these losers even if the head knows that the losers were waving tiki torches. Most likely, the preacher won’t do a sermon because they’re afraid their collection plates will lose precious dollars. MLK Jr. himself wrote about his frustration with other church leaders in Letter from a Birmingham Jail how often he was lectured by them not to rock the boat, to be patient.

Then, he’s got to GO, TLD!

I’ve already listed the reasons why–the multiple arguments we can use against him, already, even without what Mueller will uncover!

We cannot tolerate a NAZI-SYMPATHIZER in the Oval Office, surrounded by like-minded aides, placing like-minded THUGS on the COURTS!!

Trumpism was already an existential threat to our democracy–this is further overwhelming evidence of that threat!!

          The authority of a Nazi-sympathizer in a genuine democracy is–MUST BE–FORFEIT!!

No decent human being, loyal to this Republic and its Constitution, can call ANYONE who holds such monstrous and criminal views, ANYONE who poses such a fundamental, existential threat to the RULE OF LAW, a legitimate POTUS!!

To do so is to commit TREASON!!

We already had solid reasons for rejecting his presidency!

          THIS is the FINAL STRAW!!

I WILL NOT CALL A NAZI-SYMPATHIZER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!!

        • Let us all never forget: TRUMP is a RACIST, too. He and his father were sued multiple times for racist rental and hiring policies—and had to settle in court every time.

It’s not just that the white nationalists have a hold on him by way of their support. He IS and ALWAYS HAS BEEN one of them.

          He’s espoused beliefs in eugenics.
He’s been reported to be an admirer of Hitler’s speeches
He tried to have the Central Park Five denied a fair trial and sent to the electric chair, even though they were innocent
He specifically ordered there be no black pit-bosses or dealers in his casinos whenever he’s around
He was caught repeatedly discriminating against black would-be tenants and job applicants
The one black dude in his administration, without question a token cabinet appointment, he sent off to run HUD
Not one of his judicial appointments has been black

I believe his failure to condemn the Nazis yesterday, added to so many other abuses he’s already guilty of, which I’ve listed MANY times, is the final straw, even without knowing what Mueller will uncover, and that massive and relentless protests to demand his immediate removal from power should begin.

        What?

        • Reality.Bites

Sorry, might not have expressed that clearly.

Ohbear1957 says this is the next cover of TIME.

I’m pointing out that they’ve never felt the need to portray a Dem. prez as a member of the KKK, despite them being a generally Republican-leaning publication.

And I felt people who think both parties are the same should ponder that.

          • Karl Dubhe

In some regards, ages ago, they did have some similarity.

But that was a long long time ago, and it wasn’t very accurate even then; Sorry Gore Videl.

          • Reality.Bites

That’s true. And I think that’s largely true true of Britain, Canada, Australia and (perhaps?) New Zealand’s left-of-centre and right-of-centre parties.

Using Canada as an example, on contentious issues such as medicare, legalization of abortion and homosexuality, bilingualism, having a constitutionally entrenched charter of rights, abortion on demand, gays in the military and marriage, there has always been substantial open support (and opposition) for both issues in both parties.

I am watching, with curiosity, how newer rights are slowly becoming entrenched values, to the point where politicians on the right must at least pay lip service to them.

George W. Bush was the last Republican who could do and say the right thing at the right time, despite accepting and courting the same voters Trump did.

  • Y’all might not remember why this Nazi / white supremacist tiki-torch protest happened in Charlottesville, VA in the first place.

It was because the city was going to take down a statue to Robert E Lee.

The city didn’t want to give a protest permit, citing safety issues. They were overridden by the courts.

    Source: https://thinkprogress.org/fed-judge-white-nationalists-charlottesville-3983f45fce85/

Nazis and white supremacists (almost but not quite the same thing) showed up to protest this and to try to stir up violence. And so they did.

As I noted downthread in my insomniac scribblings, you should not be at all surprised Trump didn’t condemn the hate, not really. He’s not doing it just because he needs their support. He’s doing it also BECAUSE HE IS ONE OF THEM.

    – He’s espoused beliefs in eugenics.
    – He’s been reported to be an admirer of Hitler’s speeches
    – He tried to have the Central Park Five denied a fair trial and sent to the electric chair, even though they were innocent—and still thinks they all deserve the death penalty
    – He specifically ordered there be no black pit-bosses or dealers in his casinos whenever he was around
    – He was caught repeatedly discriminating against black would-be tenants and job applicants
    – The one black dude in his administration, without question a token cabinet appointment, he sent off to run HUD (for the purpose of destroying the department)
    – Not one of his judicial appointments has been black
    – And finally, Jeff Sessions is his AG

Trump doesn’t have many beliefs beyond admiring himself, but there is no question that he is a racist and white supremacist, and quite frankly embraces many Nazi ideals as his own.

His tepid statements this past day are entirely because he had to be talked into saying anything critical about the violence. Never forget, he said at his own rallies that he wanted his supporters to become violent.

Well, they listened and then acted. Until this cancer is rooted out, there will only be more of this horror.

    • billbear1961

They keep trying to pin it on their unwavering support for him, without taking the leap of reason to ask, “WHY do they support him?”

Almost none seem willing to consider the even more horrific truth: He does not criticize because he agrees. And they support him because they recognize their own.

          • Silver Badger

A cup of Clorox once in awhile helps. Used too much, it degrades the fabric. My grandmother used a product called Blueing, but I haven’t seen it in years.

          • PickyPecker

I use bluing. You can find it in the grocery store, most times. It really does work.

Hey! It’s all a mistake. His mom said he has a black friend.

And no. I’m not making this up.

“Laurie Schoonmaker, who lives across the street from Ms. Bloom (Fields mother), said she hadn’t seen his car in months, but when he was there he often blasted polka music from the car.”

    http://www.toledoblade.com/Nation/2017/08/12/Hundreds-face-off-ahead-of-white-nationalist-rally.html

Yes, there is German polka music.

    • Dramphooey

I like that music at Oktoberfest. Let’s not libel a musical genre!

      • Gustav2

Why would this German American do that!

        • TuuxKabin

          The accordion?

          • Gustav2

Well, yes and the Nazi/AltRight have weaponized the music, trying to drown out urban music when they drive thru certain neighborhoods.

          • Dramphooey

They defile everything they touch and they keep touching music I like. They were doing the same thing to punk. That’s actually the whole point to the song Nazi Punks Fuck Off. LOL, get me a band; I guess it is time to record Nazi Polka Fuck Off!

          • Silver Badger

No. Don’t let them have Polka music. It is happy music. Granted, a little goes a long way, but still…

Whom THEY turned into a fascist MURDERER! And if he were older, they’d have some OTHER goddamned EXCUSE for why this TERRORIST act doesn’t MATTER!!

How about WE set the fucking agenda for a fucking CHANGE, instead of always waiting for the right to do it, instead of always waiting, in trepidation, to react to what THEY say, as if they were our MASTERS?!

    • Tulle Christensen

So a year older than Dzhokhar Tsarnaev when he did his terror attack

      • Reality.Bites

Omar Khadr was 15 when he may have thrown a grenade and killed an American solider before a group of them could kill him.

He is just a kid. Extremists pick on the young, the impulsive, the easily manipulated, the dim. He’ll spend the rest of his life in prison. Meanwhile the men who created this toxic politics will have fine lives living at the top of the conservative dung pile.

      • canoebum

Well then, he will have plenty of time to cover his body with Ayran Brotherhood tattoos, up the neck and onto his forehead. He’s going to need them to protect him inside. Mowing down anti-Nazi protesters with your car gets you real street cred (sorry) with the True Believers.

Those Germans. So intolerant of freedom of speech. /s

    • Reality.Bites

Best part: Police say the American … is under investigation for violating Germany’s laws against the display of Nazi symbols or slogans

      • Karl Dubhe

Better part, imagine what the Germans will tell the US ambassador if he protests. 🙂

Wait, do you have an ambassador to Germany?

        • TuuxKabin

Do we have an ambassador to any where?

          • Karl Dubhe

You’ve got a few, but it really does look like Donny doesn’t give a fuck about that either.

Time for an upper age limit on those who can run for the Presidency, methinks. 🙂

          • Gustav2

            And the House and Senate.

          • Karl Dubhe

There, no. There is a place for the elder statesman/woman. The senate or the house is best.

Age doesn’t necessarily cause total incapacity, but some jobs shouldn’t be done by the elderly.

          • Reality.Bites

Nah, just a lower IQ limit.

          • TuuxKabin

There’s been a disgraceful and deceptive double standard in journalism that goes way back to Raygun and the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine. It allows wingnuts to say whatever crazy things they like and be treated as on a par with what liberals and Democrats say. The rise of these crazy Nazis is the direct result of that being the backdrop over the years.

    • We’ve been catering to the sensibilities of bigots for far too long.

  • Quotes from Mom about her son (NPR)

She said she knew he was attending a rally in Virginia, but that she didn’t know it was a white supremacist rally.

“I thought it had something to do with Trump. Trump’s not a white supremacist,” said Bloom, who became visibly upset as she learned of the injuries and deaths at the rally.

“He had an African-American friend so …,” she said before her voice trailed off. She added that she’d be surprised if her son’s views were that far right, according to the AP.

    • Tulle Christensen

So she does not know what her son or Trump really are

      • Silver Badger

She did not want to know. Her son probably wore her out with his hate speech long since and she stopped listening.

        • ccc

So why make “Trump’s not a white supremacist” comment? Seems like she is indeed listening.

          • Silver Badger

Now. Of course, in her dream world Trump is still not a white supremacist.

Given yesterday’s events, has Godwin’s Law been suspended for the duration of the Trump regime?

    • I thought it already had.

    • Dramphooey

Godwin’s Law (as an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Hitler approaches 1) has been superseded by Trump’s Law (as a demagogue’s administration grows longer, the probability of the emergence of actual followers of Hitler approaches 1).

    • Dramphooey

On my many trips to San Diego in the 90’s and early 2000’s I practically lived a few miles north of the aquarium at Black’s Beach. Daily treks out there and then down that steep trail that led to the north end of the beach. Perfect water to swim, body surf in. Great warm (sometimes scalding hot) wide sandy beach. But…stepping on those nasty little stingrays ended my beach days 3 different times in short order. Even shuffling my feet into the water wasn’t enough. Or wearing tevas the 3rd time. Having to hike back up that trail to the car with a wounded foot was miserable.

      • Paul

You couldn’t find anyone to pee on your foot ? (FYI that is the quick remedy for stingray hits ) And at Black’s beach I am sure you could have found some brave soul 🙂

Adviser: Trump Didn’t Want To ‘Dignify’ White Supremacy By Condemning It

“White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert on Sunday claimed President Donald Trump’s failure to condemn white supremacists after violence broke out at a rally in Charlottesville was because he didn’t want to “dignify” the movement.

“The President not only condemned the violence, and stood up at a time and a moment when calm was necessary, and didn’t dignify the names of these groups of people, but rather addressed the fundamental issue,” Bossert said on CNN’s “State of the Union.””

Yeah right, Trump didn’t mention the Nazi/AltRight when he said. “We love our country, we love our God, we love our flag, we’re proud of our country, we’re proud of who we are.” and the bit about cherishing our history.
