TEXAS: Anti-Trans “Bathroom Bill” Is All But Dead

The Texas Tribune reports:

Despite it serving, in part, as the reason lawmakers are back in Austin for legislative overtime, the Texas Legislature could very well gavel out next week without passing a “bathroom bill.”

And it’s unlikely that will change in the coming days. “I’d say the chances are definitely getting smaller,” Republican state Rep. Ron Simmons of Carrollton, who filed two bathroom bills during the special session, said earlier this week.

With the passage of a bathroom bill seeming improbable, Republican state Sen. Lois Kolkhorst — the author of the Senate legislation — on Friday suggested lawmakers could be left to address the issue in the future.

“Men do not belong in female locker rooms, showers and restrooms and no amount of monetary threats, corporate logos, New Yorker articles or Hollywood hypocrisy will ever change that,” Kolkhorst said in a prepared statement.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

Was it business influence? Or was it also seeing the military coming out in favor of transgender people?

    • Businesses mainly. It always comes down to money.

Plus, seriously, the TX bill would’ve forced THIS dude to use women’s restrooms and locker rooms:

      • Oscarlating Wildely

I’ll gladly escort him to any bathroom he wants. Anywhere, anytime.

        • I’d do him. If I wasn’t happily married, that is.

          • Oscarlating Wildely

            Ditto. Damn, that’s just… I mean, damn!!

      • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Ive always had a thing for FTM’s, its intriguing :~P

      • Todd20036

        You people are all incorrigible!

Why cannot you all be more like me? *hairtoss*

        • MT YVR

          I’d need more lube?

          (laughing and running)

      • Tulle Christensen

I find it funny that since I think “Men do not belong in female locker rooms, showers and restrooms” is the very reason I am against such laws

        • Todd20036

Yeah, but these RWNJs define gender entirely on genitalia.

SO in their eyes, he’s still female.

But try telling that to women who would have to use the bathroom with him

And if they complained, would he have to show himself to avoid getting arrested?

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Todd, the asswipes never thought that far ahead in their hate

          • Tulle Christensen

Is it bad that I also would rather have him in my locker room than in the woman’s?

          • Oscarlating Wildely

Locker room, bedroom, backseat, sandbox, church pew–not picky.

          • Here’s the thing: EVEN IF he has full-on gender assignment surgery and is sporting a dick, the ignorant Texas bigots would still demand he be considered female.

Their real goal is to make gender transition itself illegal. Transfolks are relatively rare and don’t have much power, so they’re an easy minority to demonize and oppress.

Gay and lesbian folks would be next. There’s few bigotries more urgently compelling than when someone’s decided they get to command how other people live their lives, whom they sleep with and whom they are permitted to love.

I had a revelation when I came out to my family and it went as disastrously as one could imagine. I realized I was expected to live my entire life a particular way so that my father wouldn’t feel bad or uncomfortable whenever he happened to think about me.

Transphobes and homophobes are the same way: They demand LGBT people be invisible so they can pretend no such people exist.

          • clay

If they had their way, they’d also make being intersexed illegal. They’ve already taken action to return homosexual behavior to the illegal side of the statutes.

          • Yep. Every time I see one of them write some stupid shit like, “There are only two genders and they are unchangeable from birth onward”—all I can think is, “You goddamned reality-denying science-ignorant motherfucker…”

Hormones, genetics, mutations—gender isn’t binary. It *usually* is, but isn’t always.

          • Tulle Christensen

As I always say nothing in biology is binary

          • Chucktech

Seriously! That just galls me to death.

“Mayal an feemayal. That thar’s yer syence lol ha ha.”

          • Tulle Christensen

How could the forced birthers make intersexed illegal, that is either genetic or developmental

          • By enforcing binary assignment at birth and never allowing any revision thereof.

          • Chucktech

These Texas shitheads don’t believe there IS such a thing as F-M transgender, only M-F so they can perv it up in the ladies room.

          • There’s that, too. Which says much of the motivation is inherently and intentionally sexist. “Ooooh! Our LADIES need to be protected from men in dresses!”

          • William

I’d like to see a bunch of men in dresses chase Abbott down the street or off a cliff.

          • jonfromcalifornia

They don’t even think being gay is real! They think that gays are just straights who CHOOSE to “sin” by acting on their urges.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

Side note: I have a strange fixation with tattoos, not as in the “it means something in a language that I know nothing of!” tattoos but the process of ink and skin and eyes and hair blending into a full image, one that’s harmonious with the rest of the body and with the remainder of the ink.

        Dude’s got it down perfectly.

        • Todd20036

When you have that many tattoos, it only works if the guy is that masculine.

I’ve seen heavily inked effeminate men and it never works

          • John30013

            Exhibit A: Bieber.

      • greenmanTN

It might be kind of interesting if there were a “Trans week of doing what the GOP wants” or whatever, in which people like him DID use the women’s restrooms, and vice verse for MTF, just to see how it unfolds. “Hey, this is what you said you wanted.”

(That said, I would never want any Trans person to put themselves in danger.)

I’ll tell you which bathroom will be cleaner, better decorated, and less of a health hazard.. it won’t be the one on the left!

      • I wouldn’t bet on that, too many would go to the other one to fuck it up.
I say this as someone who had ‘go home fag’ spray painted all over his car years ago.
And also as someone who had to clean a restroom at a small gas station/laundry/carwash for over 15 years.

TEXAS: Anti-Trans “Bathroom Bill” Is All But Dead

If only we could say the same thing about the anti-LGBT factions themselves.

    • Tawreos

Every day brings us closer to that goal though

Not when (not if) the SCOTUS goes fundie

It seems that all of those things do change things you self righteous prick

  • Chucktech

Aw, what’s the matter, Texas christian shitheads, some tech industries and sportsball teams finally “tawkin’ yer langwige”?

  • Xuuths

These aren’t men in female locker rooms, but women in female locker rooms. Duh. No amount of pearl-clutching, bible-thumping, fear-mongering, or lying will ever change that. (Jeez the anti-trans people are stupid.)

  • Ninja0980

Too bad the abortion bills they are pushing through aren’t.
They lost on this battle but have won others.

    • Texas is quickly becoming a death state for poor women. And the sad thing is most of them don’t understand how their votes for GOP candidates are eliminating their health care choices.

    • MaryJOGrady

Those laws are unconstitutional. It’s just going to cost Texas taxpayers a bundle to defend them unsuccessfully in the courts.

  • JWC

What a herd of Dumbasses GOP has become. Bitched for 7 years about the ACA and did nothing. Both NC and Texas wasted millions in tax dollars and lost millions more in Venue revenue, all over a nonstarter issue of who can pee where Republicians this is your government sticking it to you You Know , the people you voted for

    • Carl

But remember, we’re supposedly the ones diving the country with our identity politics.

    • OdieDenCO

now, now. you can’t take away of the ACA GOP’s accomplishments. they voted 60+ time to repeal during those 7 years, to the exclusion of everything else.

O/T You may not have the rights you thought you had!

A Vancouver renter says he was shocked after a landlord refused to allow his boyfriend to stay in his room, due to what she called her “Christian values.”

    The fine print…

Section 10 of the B.C. Human Rights Code states a person can’t deny
tenancy to anyone based on their sex or sexual orientation, among other things. But a subsection says the rule doesn’t apply if the space is being shared.

Since the room was part of a series of rooms in a house being rented out, it’s legal, says Elizabeth Reid, an employment and human rights lawyer with Boughton Law Corporation.

    • Tulle Christensen

      Time to move

    • Tomcat

Most laws are deliberately designed with loopholes in them, both ways.

    • Rillion

Similar in most places in the states. If you are sharing a house/apartment, you are allowed to be more discriminating in who you choose as a roommate. A friend recently got his ex-girlfriend in trouble with the people she was renting a room from cause they had told her she wasn’t allowed to have overnight male guests.

      • MaryJOGrady

Overnight male guests for unmarried females! Oh, my word! [Clutches pearls]

  • -M-

Bitchy Republican thugs are the ones trying to put transmen in women’s restrooms and locker rooms.

  • agcons

Gee whillikers this is terrible. If ever I go to Texas how will I stay safe? Oh, the agony. Oh, the distress.

    • Tomcat

But at least you can go in peace, to the bathroom that is.

  • Tiger Quinn

For so long liberals were demonized as the reasons that all of this “good, common sense” legislation didn’t pass. Now that they have the keys to literally everything, that myth is falling apart.

  • ceeenbee

“Men do not belong in female locker rooms, showers and restrooms and no amount of monetary threats, corporate logos, New Yorker articles or Hollywood hypocrisy will ever change that,” Kolkhorst said.

    3 words:

  • Stogiebear

I look forward to reading similar headlines about Greg Abbott and Dan Patrick and all of their Dominionist scum.

  • Karl Dubhe

Fine, men belong in the men’s room and ladies in the ladies.

No law needed for that. No need to ask anyone aboot who poops where. You really don’t want to know, not really. 🙂

  • MaryJOGrady

Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, a sane Republican, had an enormous part in killing the Texas bathroom bills. As a lifelong Democrat who suffered through Republican rule in Texas since the idiot George W. Bush became governor, I must applaud him for that.

    • UrsusArctos

We have to take allies wherever we can find them in the Heart of Redness. Yes, it’s probably because of commercial pressure. Good. We’ve had to endure enough crap because: business.
I have written a few thank you to despicable GOP representatives and senators who did the right thing, for the wrong reason in my years.

  • JCF
  • Jean-Marc in Canada

“As nature intends, after every storm, when the sun peeks from behind the grey, a rainbow will always follow” – me

  • The Texas legislature has done an awful lot of harm in the past few years. Kolkhorst wants to continue to do harm, despite the very real consequences. One can only hope that she does not find a way to succeed, and that Texas voters come to the realization that the kind of government they have been electing is not good for women, children and other living things.

  • Richard B

That indignant festering human boil called Lt Gov. Dan Patrick who made this non issue into an political issue and called for this special session of the Texas legislature to write a bathroom bill to discriminate against trans folks, must be having a terrible case of the sadzzzzzzz.

  • DuaneBidoux

As a 28 year resident of Houston I never believed this would pass. Between Houston and Dallas alone there are probably a 100 corporate headquarters. So Texas, unlike say N. Carolina, has a massive business community who is the wing of the Republican party that would rather be rich than righteous.
