FBI Tracked Russian Fake News On Election Day

CNN reports:

The FBI monitored social media on Election Day last year in an effort to track a suspected Russian disinformation campaign utilizing “fake news,” CNN has learned.

In the months leading up to Election Day, Twitter and Facebook were the feeding grounds for viral “news” stories floating conspiracies and hoaxes, many aimed at spreading negative false claims about Hillary Clinton.

On Election Day, dozens of agents and analysts huddled at a command center arrayed with large monitoring screens at the FBI headquarters in Washington watching for security threats, according to multiple sources.

FBI analysts had identified social media user accounts behind stories, some based overseas, and the suspicion was that at least some were part of a Russian disinformation campaign, according to two sources familiar with the investigation.

Trump may have not “colluded” with the Ruskies – but he damned well knew it was happening – and he did nothing about it.

No honor. No soul. No president.

    • HAAAAAAA

“but he damned well knew it was happening – and he did nothing about it.”

Isn’t that the very definition of collusion.

      • netxtown

Not really. I would think collusion requires a bi-directional exchange. Donnie kept himself on the receiving end – but his kids were the go betweens. He knew they would be safe as he held the power to pardon.

        • Tomcat

That is because Donnie’s collusion part was way before the election and even his announcement to run.

        • Adam Schmidt

Now there are indications that he was actively colluding with Russia. There’s so many points of contact between his campaign and the Kremlin and there’s the fact that Trump altered the GOP agenda leading up to the convention to be more Russia friendly (in fact those alterations were the only things that his campaign requested). Beyond that, there’s the money trail that has been largely invisible to us (since Donnie still won’t release his returns and detailed financial information) that Mueller is investigating and may very well likely show money laundering and payoffs.

          THAT would be collusion.

And once one of Trump’s campaign gets nailed for collusion or money laundering or given the circumstances possibly treason… then the very next question for Trump becomes “what did he know and when did he know it” which is a phrase some of us might remember well from another presidency.

        • Skokieguy [Larry]

Like Asshole Jr. saying in response to the email that Summer would be a great time to release the damaging Intel on Hillary? Timing the work of a hostile foreign power’s interference is clearly colluding.

    • SoCalGal20

But Jared and Cambridge Analytica and Trump Campaign digital director Brad Parscale all did their part.

    • BobSF_94117

He publicly encouraged it. His “joke” at the time seemed like it could be a joke. Now that we know what he knew at the time, not so much…

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

And let’s not forget that Obama went to the heads of Congress and asked them to release a bipartisan statement prior to the election to disclose the Russian interference. Obama didn’t want to do it himself for fear of appearing partisan. The idea was killed by Mitch McConnell. Obama also had a plan to bring in troops if necessary to maintain order on election day.

So one of the many right wing trial balloons (well what if Trump did collude, Obama new and did nothing) is like most of them – patently false.

        • JCF

“The idea was killed by Mitch McConnell”

          THIS!!!!

          • The same Mitch willing to kick 20-30 million of his fellow Americans off health care. The same Mitch who received money from the NRA for voting their way.

  • netxtown

If I hear one more person saying the Russian interference did not effect the outcome of the election I am going to scream.
OF COURSE IT DID DAMN IT.

    • Tomcat

To me it is like saying airline policy had no effect on 911.

    • Andymac3

With the small margins that Trump won the electoral college, this active infiltration of the election process by the Russian government (Wikileaks, Gussifer 2, hackers, twitter/facebook propaganda), a willing participant (Trump) and his campaign team (Manafort et al), and other numerous big money parties involved (Mercers, Trump business contacts), this was not a murder carried out by an individual, but death of democratic election by a thousand cuts.

      • Tomcat

And lets not let the media off the hook for their years of questioning Hillary’s honor to America which keep going right up to the election.

      • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Closing 900 polling stations in red ruled states didnt help either.
And still hillary won by 3 million votes.

    • jerry

On social media, they targeted areas and people so specific in swing states, that they couldn’t have done it without GOP/Trump Campaign voter data.

  • DreadPikathulhu

and they’re going to do it again, and again, and again. Social media provides the perfect conduit for propaganda disguised as your next door neighbor.

    • marshlc

      Uh huh. In all ways.

Remember before the election some of the voices on here, which had never been seen before and haven’t been seen since, which shouted out extreme positions supporting or attacking either Clinton or Sanders. Riling everyone up, stirring shit, and stoking fires.

Sowing dissension among your enemies, while pretending to be one of them, is a great way to do propaganda.

      • cleos_mom

Although some of them are still around. Like a herpes virus.

  • Gigi

The FBI tracked it but did nothing. So now you have a Giant Orange Anus in the WH. #smh

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Comey can eat shit and die.

  • SoCalGal20

Now you too can track Russian propaganda/disinformation ops, sort of. Clint Watts’ Hamilton 68 Dashboard tracks aggregates stats on known Russian propaganda twitter accounts. Interesting to see what hashtags and keywords trend with them.

    So Donnie..
Your PissGAte was more than showers!!!

  • joe ho

And the far-left was scarfing up the Russian Hillary hate stories just as greedily as the Trumpanzees.

Why we can’t have nice things.

    • danolgb

It’s happening again and even more obviously connected to Trump. Last week, Michael Sainato published no less than three articles on the alleged “anointing” of Kamala Harris aimed at keeping the far left angry with the Dems. Three articles on the exact same thing! All of which were published on The Observer.. a site owned by Jared Kushner and dutifully passed around Bernie Facebook groups.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Never let them forget what they did.

      • HZ81

        Never. Never ever.

      • JCF

I just unsubbed from Keith Ellison’s list (beg-a-thon, like all politicians). Why, you may ask? He sent me an email yesterday marked FROM “Bernie Sanders”. [You bet, when I unsubbed, I told him why!]

    • pablo

Yeah I can’t believe they made shit up about her voting for the Iraq war, being against marriage equality until it polled well, pandering to big banks, and being a disaster as Sec of State.

      • And they forgot the 30 years of devoting her career to women and children.

      • joe ho

        lol.

ah! the far-left purity code mantra which brought us Trump.

yeah evolving on political and social issues is a real bummer. so is promising to appoint supreme court judges to overturn citizens united. no the usa is not going to turn into a brocialist workers’ paradise. banks will continue to play a pivotal role.

clinton talked to goldman sachs and met with an executive from exxonn. now goldman sachs and exxon actually are running the country. you far-left saboteurs are quite effective at getting what you want.

as far as clinton as secretary of state, you must be happy channeling gop and putin hillary -hate. the reality is quite different.

        http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/09/carly-fiorina-debate-hillary-clintons-greatest-accomplishment-213157

now take your far-left, self-destructive purity codes and find a very tall building and throw yourself off it. you have done enough damage. and take all your Che Guevara wannabes with you. or fly back to PUtin’s arms together with Ruskie-loving Jill. you are scum. disgusting scum.

  • marshlc

I can understand the reasons, I suppose, why nothing was done about this before the election, when they already knew so much about it. I guess.

    But, man……

  • cleos_mom

On Election Day???? Too fucking late.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

    On election day…really/

Nothin’ like closing the barn door after the horse has bolted, right FBI?

  • Nic Peterson

Probably took their eyes off of the real crime: the hacking of selected states voting machines.

  • Dear Hillary:
So sad that it happened to a good person with such a track record of helping others.
