ISRAEL: Jerusalem Pride Draws Huge Crowd Under Heavy Police Protection After 2015 Murder [VIDEO]

The Times Of Israel reports:

Thousands of people marched through central Jerusalem under heavy security on Thursday in the city’s 16th annual pride parade. The annual march was the scene of a deadly attack two years ago, and often draws protests from the far-right and ultra-Orthodox community.

Police said that 12 people had been detained for questioning. They were suspected of “intent to disrupt and cause harm during the event. One of them was found in possession of a knife,” police said in a tweet. Israel Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh was at the parade to oversee the heavy security measures, which included cameras and aerial surveillance.

Marching past the spot where Shira Banki was stabbed to death in 2015, marchers stopped to lay flowers and hold a moment of silence. Nearby, some 50 protesters from the far-right Lehava organization held a counter-demonstration, surrounded by a tight police cordon.

Shira Banki’s killer is serving a life sentence.

    • Kruhn

Which is by far the harshest sentence the Israeli legal system allows as it is rarely handed down.

Ok, so I kept wondering why the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) was marching in the Jerusalem Pride parade. But USCG apparently also means U.S. Consulate General.

      • Kenster999

I had to look that up, too!

    • Kruhn

Hope your homophobic boss His Cheetohness doesn’t give you grief for standing for our American values, despite the State Department dropping promoting democracy and human rights from its mission statement.

    • DonnaLee

Loving the combination of gay and regular US flags.

  • Hue-Man

    Are ALL right-wing politicians corrupt?

A former close aide to Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to testify against the Israeli prime minister, a key break in investigations that Israeli police acknowledged publicly for the first time involve suspicion of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust.

    • Kruhn

Oh the Israeli Naval Defense Force liaison with the German armsmaker ThyssenKrupp is in their version of witness protection over pay-for-play allegations too.

  • JoeMyGod
    • John30013

I’ll have one of each, please.

(You all know what I’m talking about. Don’t pretend you don’t. 🙂

  • Silver Badger

I tried running JMG without add blocker. Between the auto-play and the malware notifications, it proved to be more trouble than it was worth. Sorry Joe.

    • Boreal

If you use Firefox, you can disable autoplay.

    • John30013

You can block autoplay on Chrome on Android too: Settings » Site Settings » Media » Autoplay.

    • TheManicMechanic

Ad companies refuse to play nice, so I refuse to unblock or whitelist. Even here. The place is otherwise plastered with Taboola stupidity ads and gets hijacked with autoplay video and other junk. Yep, sorry Joe. The ad payload alone accounts for megabytes of preloaded video, animated gifs and huge numbers of third party trackers and scripts. Read a few articles on a wireless device and you’ve chalked up 50 megabytes of data, not including the images and videos that are embedded in the comments. At least Disqus “hides” these in the comments on mobile devices to save on bandwidth. The ads? They constantly change, reload and suck bandwidth on an otherwise static page. I get chastised for my “fervor” over blocking ads and privacy killing trackers and scripts, but these ad outfits, even top tier ones like Google, keep outstripping their boundaries set by site admins. I applaud Joe for not turning this place into another Towleroad, but he has enough work bringing actual content here than going around tamping down misbehaving ads.

But then you’ll never know how ‘jawdropping’ certain B-list celebrities now look, or how two college freshman in (your town) are upsetting a multi-million dollar industry!

  • Ninja0980

    May they all stay safe.

    • TrueWords

Not just at Pride but throughout the year and in various settings…

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Looks like they had a great time…good. The world needs more gay, less religion.

    • Kruhn

      Or more gay, less intolerance.

      • j.martindale

Which is derived in large part from religious superstition.

        • Kruhn

I’m a little more optimistic. But I’ll buy 70% of your argument, deal?

      • TheManicMechanic

You get a twofer if you cut out religion first.

  • Christopher

OT: Adorable new ad from Luvs…

O/T but wanted to share this article with everyone.
IMO, Clarence Thomas being able to replace Thurgood Marshall on the bench was one of the most damaging things to happen to this country in the past 30 years.
He’s been able to destroy many of the things Marshall spent his whole life fighting for and if he has his way, this country will go back in time to the 1850’s.
If that happens, all I can say is this, I hope he receives the same treatment blacks back then got, it’s what he deserves and more.

    • The_Wretched

Thomas always was a puppet of the christianists and it’s not clear that he’d rule against the re-institution of slavery given his hostility to the civil rights amendments. And Goresuch is right there with him.

  • Rex

It’s great that many can celebrate pride openly and without fear.
It really makes a statement when the risk is real.
Happy Pride to our Jerusalem brothers and sisters.

    • licuado de platano

I’m not so sure about the “without fear” part.

      Bye bye Bi Bi

    • Randy Left Brooklyn

Good. Bibi going will remove a key obstacle to peace in the region.

    • The_Wretched

I’ll be very happy to see him gone. I mean, the guy is the PM of Israel and he gets along great with our own neo-nazi in the WH?

      • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

Birds of a feather and all that.

Oh, USCG is US Consulate General, not US Coast Guard. I couldn’t figure what the USCG would be doing there.

ETA: I wasn’t the only one who didn’t know the other meaning.
