POLL: 89% Support LGB Employment Protections, Majority Of Military Households Back Trans Soldiers

Via Qunnipiac Polling:

American voters say 68 – 27 percent, including 55 – 39 percent among voters in military households, that transgender people should be allowed to serve in the military, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today.

Republicans opposed transgender service 60 – 32 percent, but every other party, gender, education, age or racial group supports transgender service by margins of 22 percentage points or higher, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

By an 89 – 8 percent margin, American voters say it should be illegal for an employer to discriminate against an employee based on sexual orientation. More acceptance of transgender people would be “a good thing for the country,” 46 percent of voters say, as 14 percent say it would be “a bad thing” and 39 percent say it would not make much difference.

Which is if/when Democrats get back into power we need to hold their asses to the fire to get protections made into law.

    • The_Wretched

Grab them now and ask why they aren’t at least trying to plant flags. All those endless ‘repeal obamacare’ votes helped solidify their base. Dems need to make everyone know what they stand for.

  • Adam Stevens

Still living in a world where our basic humanity is polled…

Why do they never poll us about our opinions of heterosexuals? Are they scared of being judged for legally tearing apart their families at a rate of 50% to go and start a completely new one, leaving devastated children in their quest for a hotter wife that gives better head???

    Just thinking out loud…

    • Oh, Parker

When you’ve been brought up your entire life to think you’re the norm, you don’t look inward. You only look for outsiders to be the root of society’s problems. They want everyone to be accountable but themselves.

Introspection has never been the strong suit of gawd’s gentle people in spite of the constant guidance to do exactly that.

Valid questions, all of them. Especially interested in why they think hot wife #x will continue to provide the oral services after marriage. Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

    • Adam Schmidt

Sadly, the social constructs around the family unit needs some review. Marriage started as a means of cementing treaties and handling land ownership and due to life spans being what they were, were intended to last 15 years or so. The idea of love being part of, let alone the foundation of, a marriage was considered irrational and irresponsible.

Now we have lifespans that make relationships of over 60 years possible and marriages are based on the emotions of the people at the time they enter into it. Emotions that change over time. Divorce is a great option for exiting a relationship that has become unhealthy. And that doesn’t even get into things like polyamory or non-standard family configurations.

But to have a lot of these discussions, we have to be able to step outside of archaic thinking largely bound up in religious ritual that has been supercharged by marketing from industries that make insane amounts of money off of weddings.

    • FAEN

We’re more evolved in that respect. We’re not threatened by heterosexuals.

  • Jonathan Smith
  • Dirk Prophet

Straight America has been won over. It’s time we all celebrate.

    • Hank

NOW we just have to convince their Rethiglican representatives in the States and in Congress to change their laws, before we can TRULY celebrate.

  • Gustav2

but…but…but that is not what the Dominionists like Jeff Sessions and other Christianist Trump supporters want!

Maybe it started to dawn on them we don’t all give fashion advise and interior decorating or put on a good Broadway show. Nothing wrong with those careers but we are in every profession, including life savings career and those profession they interact with in their everyday life. If they are not bigotted, they might even know a family/friend or two within their social network.

Urgh. Someone help me fix Disqus. Has anyone experience some of the post being grey out? Usually youtube I think.

    • Uncle Mark

Some may only care that we shoot straight. Others may realize the bravery to come out, to risk and withstand the prejudices & abuse of bigots is the same bravery that will protect their fellow soldiers and regiments

  • as with all the hater bills about the trans community, i once again wonder about the practicality of such policies. is the military going to now be giving between the leg inspections, to see if a post-op transperson has “real” genitals or not? i get that the military is not society as a whole, and that service members give up a lot of freedoms when they are in uniform. but i’m thinking of my old staff sergeants from boot, and wondering how they would feel, if the order came down, “find and kick out all trans service members.” i’m pretty sure all of them would “look,” by not really looking, and say back to their superiors, “nope. none in this company.” they have more important things to worry about.

    • KarenAtFOH

Since service members are unlikely to have doctored birth certificates, it would presumably be a simple matter of comparing their documentation with their preferred physical presentation. “Oh Sgt. Jill, your docs say Male? Bye bye.” I confess I don’t know how military IDs handle trans people at the moment.

  • JWC

trump is so friggin desparate to deflect Mueller and Russia he is insanely firing shots to deflect, confuse and bury it all I feel his own party is turning on him as 2018 is a scant 5 months away and he is a milstone

    • andrew

I am concerned that Trump may take some serious military action against North Korea because that may get folks to rally around the “Commander-In-Chief” and bury the whole Russia problem, at the same time it buries many innocent people.

      • JWC

i don’t think he has the support to unilaterally pull that off even if he wanted to

        • whollyfool

But what’s stopping him? Doesn’t he have the football? 🙁

          • JWC

i don’tthink he can arbitrairrly open that and press a button

          • whollyfool

            Here’s hoping. 🙂

        • andrew

Hopefully you’re right, but some of the things that I have read seem to indicate that the system was set up for speed, to allow the president to rapidly respond to a threat and doesn’t have checks built into it.

          • JWC

I have understood he has the codes to transmit to the military

  • PickyPecker

OT: Time for a break. This just dropped today at PMJ. Very nice. Thought I’d share.

  • TheManicMechanic

    But, Jesus (juh-HEEEEE-aah-zuh-huss-aah)!

  • joe ho

But Republicans are disciplined voters. Liberals aren’t. That’s what matters. We can have all the public support in the world, but if anti-gay folks run the government public opinion counts for little.

    • KarenAtFOH

The pain of not voting hasn’t been high enough. Maybe it is now. God help us if it isn’t yet.

      • joe ho

I’m afraid though that the far-left is too easily manipulated by GOP and Russian propaganda. There’s a good chance they’ll end up sabotaging the Democrats again if they get their feelings hurt or if they don’t think the candidates are pure enough.

        • KarenAtFOH

Sufficient pain can, unfortunately, bring a certain clarity of thought. Let’s hope the experience of Trump so far, has been sufficient.

  • FAEN

Wasn’t it Harvey who said something along the lines of -they have a harder time hating us when they know us?

  • Boreal

Just like with marriage equality, the sky has not fallen, no straight people have had to get divorced or quit the service, civilization has not collapsed yet. The Talibangelical liars are repudiated again.

  • safari

Any thoughts on what Donald’s “big announcement” at his klan rally tonight will be?

    • Jonathan Smith

yes, I am avoiding all local TV and Huntington WV tonight.
BTW, seats are still available… 🙂

  • Silver Badger

In this case, the 39% are right. It won’t make any difference at all. Except for the Trans people of course. To them it means the world. This is enough to make the needed changes.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Well now, Orange Twitler is not going to be happy about this.

  • Richard B

Something is wrong with our democracy and needs to be addressed. We are electing people that do not do the expressed will of the majority. Instead they are doing the will of the people that fund their elections.
Democratic Party leaders, hear me Tom Perez, need to find their soul and start looking at the issues that are important to most Americans. One of them is civil rights for all Americans. Social economic justice for all American, Healthcare as a civil right, a free education for al who desire it. Poverty breed crime and desperate people do desperate things – it is time to break the back of poverty.
The Canadian system works and we can learn from it.
How do you fund some of this?
400 families own half of our nation’s wealth, that is morally unjust, and it is time to share to make us a stronger, healthier, happier nation – there is where to start.

    • The_Wretched

From gun control to abortion rights to a host of other issues, there’s polling data that says 60-85%+ of people are on the progressive or liberal side on narrow questions. Same thing for “Obamacare”. The package was at <50% approval for a long while even though provisions like removal of "pre-exisitng" polled at 80%+.

You're right, the political system is broken.

      • Friday

The Republicans are simply trying to *break* the system and have become part of the propaganda machines for their own self-interest and power.

  • Jon Doh

    The Times They Are a-Changin’.

  • We’ve come a long way, at least in terms of public attitudes. I’ll wager much of it comes from things like having nationwide same-sex marriage equality…and it turning out to be no big deal at all for most folks.

  • SFBruce

Very encouraging. There a lot of good stuff in this poll including some signs even Donnie’s supporters may be starting to look again.

  • Friday

So, once again the Republicans are acting in complete contravention of the will of the people.

  • andrew

Hopefully Americans will carry these ideas with them into the voting booths in November 2018.

  • June Gordon

In other words, the T is drag on the LGB. No news there. But the R [Republican] should be able to decide which of the other letters gets full civil rights.

  • kirtanloorii

Where are the Republicans and their talk about obeying the will of the people?
