US Test-Launches ICBM Amid North Korea Tensions

NBC News reports:

The U.S. military successfully test-launched an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile from California early Wednesday, according to an Air Force spokesman — just days after North Korea’s second test of an ICBM. The unarmed Minuteman III missile was launched at 2:10 a.m. PT from Vandenberg Air Force Base, about 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

An Air Force statement said that the test was not a response to recent North Korean actions, but shows that America’s nuclear enterprise is “safe, secure, effective and ready to be able to deter, detect and defend against attacks on the United States and its allies.”

The ICBM was equipped with a test reentry vehicle, which officials said showed it traveled about 4,200 miles to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The operation was conducted by a team of Air Force Global Strike Command Airmen from the 90th Missile Wing, along with the 576th Flight Test Squadron and the 30th Space Wing stationed at Vandenberg.

The way Lindsey Graham was talking yesterday, it’s beginning to sound more and more like they’re actually considering a military solution in NK. No good can come from that. TBIGTKUA

When we all woke up the day after the election I’m sure we all thought at some point this man baby was going to declare war somewhere. It’s just a matter of time.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

If we have the greatest military in the world, why do we need to test? How laughably, obviously false to claim that this is not in response to North Korea.

    • Rambie

The military industrial complex needed funds. If Wiki is right, the MM III missile costs about 7-million a pop. This missile type has been around since the 70’s, as I’m sure many here remember.

    • Halou

By making a big show in and around the Pacific Ocean Trump can possibly cover over the fact that there is no will whatsoever on his part to use this allegedly “greatest military in the world” for the defense of allies across the Atlantic Ocean. As he has said on numerous occasions, NATO is “obsolete” and America is tired of being the preeminent military power dumping absurd sums of money into guarding the world against those that seek to upend and/or annihilate it.

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

He will defend allies that have propped up his finances.
He will defend allies where he has business interests.
He’s happy and eager to dump absurd sums of money into our military. Do you know who Betsy DeVos’ brother is?

give the staff at mar-a-logo the day off and then accidentally point the ICBM at it and push the red button. If he doesn’t have a place to hide, maybe he’ll finally appreciate the white house.

  • Michael White

Yesterday, I spoke with a young woman who teaches English in South Korea. Of course, the news is covered very differently there. She related North Korea is very unstable and always a short distance from the government collapsing. She says the saber rattling is a ploy for them to get more ricefrom China as the people are always on verge of starvation. The fear many in South Korea have is that the orange turd will go to war first.

    • Todd20036

She may be right. Trump has been known to take a “ready, fire, aim” mentality

      • Mike__in_Houston

I keep reading this sentence and, for some reason, the word “mentality” seems odd to me standing in such close proximity to “Trump.” I guess there are various kinds of mentality, or lack thereof…

Oh for gawd’s sake, DT and Jong-Un, just whip ’em out and compare. Ohhh, right, that might be an issue for both. So… who’s got the bigger missile becomes literal. Uff.

  • Rebecca Gardner

There was absolutely no reason to do that. Well, other than tiny, insecure, male, dick waving. You know, the only reason for war in the first place.

If DJT remains in office we WILL be at war with Iran, and possibly N. Korea, by October. This is gonna just keep getting worse, and the GOP and the stupid fucking RWNJs are going to cheer us all straight into Hell.

  • Jonathan Smith
  • This pissing contest is going to cost millions of innocent lives. Fuckers. 😡

And this test launch is absurd. Does anyone, anywhere, really doubt we have the capability to wipe NK off the globe? 🙄

    • Rebecca Gardner

      Exactly!!!

  • BobSF_94117

I guess we decided it would be helpful to illustrate why NK might want to have even a teeny, tiny bit of credible counter threat…

“An Air Force statement said that the test was not a response to recent North Korean actions, but shows that America’s nuclear enterprise is ‘safe, secure, effective and ready to be able to deter, detect and defend against attacks on the United States and its allies.'”

In other words, it is a response to recent North Korean actions. Geez, they must think that everybody in the country is an idiot, and not just the ones who voted for 45:

    Reporter: Sir, those are dummies.
Governor William J. Le Petomane: I know they’re dummies. How do you think I got elected?
