Trump Signs Veto-Proof Russian Sanctions Bill

ABC News reports:

President Trump today signed a bill aimed at punishing Russia for its interference in the 2016 election despite his reservations to tighten sanctions against Moscow. The legislation was passed with rare and overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress last week.

The bill limits the president’s ability to lift or waive sanctions against Russia and keeps in place sanctions the Obama administration imposed last year. It also allows the U.S. to deny entry and revoke visas for individuals who have engaged in certain activities, such as selling arms to the Syrian government or abusing human rights.

Before the bill was signed, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson revealed that neither he nor the president approved of the sanctions, believing they hinder the administration’s attempts to restore relations with Russia.

  • Todd20036

Oh he must have HATED that. In any event, he isn’t going to impress too many people on his side of the aisle.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I hope that makes him tweet insults at the GOP Congressmen. It will help push them toward dumping his ass.

      • another_steve

How he publicly reacts to this will be a good first test of whether Kelly has any control over him whatsoever.

        • David L. Caster

Indeed. I predict silence. For now. Rexxon Tillerson is in a huff though.

  • bkmn

He could not stand the threat of a veto override with his string of failures.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

As a side note, I bet Mittens is so glad he didn’t join this administration.

    • another_steve

In retrospect Mittens seems like Abraham Lincoln, compared to Donald Trump.

      • Joseph Miceli

As horrible as Mittens would have been, at least he wouldn’t have sold us to the Russians.

  • another_steve

Your buddy has abandoned you, Vladimir.

    Time to spill the beans.

  • PickyPecker

I was sortof hoping he would go all defiant on this and then get hit with a veto override.
Pootie is NOT going to be happly about this.

    • Natty Enquirer

He’s already threatened to eject 3/4 of U.S. diplomatic staff.

    • JohnJay

Trump could have not signed, and within 10 days it would become law if Congress was still in session. If Congress had recessed, though, that would be a pocket veto. So, he could have signaled Vlad that he’s being a good boy by not signing it… and have it go into affect anyway. Of course, that would have pissed off Congress just for the bad imagery of once again being on Vlad’s side.

Hon… as one grows older, a fully awake cock at any time is a gift.

  • Rex

So, was there a big photo op? A group surrounding him as he put pen to paper?
Or, was it done with no fanfare whatsoever?

      I like that.

    • jimbo65

I think it’s way past time Putin unleash the GOP emails, as punishment for his puppet’s failure to lift sanction.

  • jimbo65

Seeing how he’s made it his life’s mission to undo everything Obama did, it must really gall him that Obama’s sanctions stay put.

  • Uncle Mark

You just know Cheeto was REALLY worried that signing this would offend his puppet-master…and was hoping or trying to relay some sort of message so Putie would understand that he had no other choice

  • HZ81

Don’t worry, folks. He’s ceding our standing to Russia in many smaller ways.

  • Lindoro Almaviva

so he gets to sign a piece of legislation, FINALLY!

    • ColdCountry

But not one he wanted. Since it was veto proof, I’m surprised he risked Putin disfavor in signing. On the other hand, Putin might have told him to go ahead, so he could look “strong” to the American public while not doing any harm himself.

Putin is not gonna be happy with his little slave.

The repressive, misogynistic, dystopian US regime in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale got its start when “they shot the president and machine-gunned the Congress and the army declared a state of emergency” (and the Constitution was “temporarily” suspended). “They blamed it on the Islamic fanatics, at the time.”

President Wilson suffered a severe stroke in October 1919. Edith Wilson began to screen all matters of state and decided which were important enough to bring to the bedridden president. In doing so, she de facto ran the executive branch of the government for the remainder of the president’s second term, until March 1921.

      Just curious.

  • canoebum

We will all have our revenge when he tells Puty that he never signed that bill. Fake News!

  • Tawreos

A president with backbone would have vetoed it and told the country that congress can override if they choose, but he thinks it is bad for the country. Of course, Trump won’t stick to his guns unless he is insulting someone or telling easily disproved lies.

  • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Last night on MSNBC somebody with knowledge on this subject said Trump and crime gang could simply not enforce the sanctions…..

    • FAEN

      Really?

      • BobSF_94117

From what I’ve read they’re all about instructing the executive to monitor and determine if people or companies have done something wrong and punish them if they did.

They can just ignore everything like they’ve been doing.

It’s a giant nothing burger. At least as far as Russia is concerned. They’ll go to town, however, on Iran and NK.

  • FAEN

His Daddy Putin is not going to be happy.

    • ColdCountry

I’m not so sure. It was veto proof, so he didn’t have to sign it, but doing so may make him look “strong” to his base while not personally doing anything to hurt Russia.

      • FAEN

Yep-his base of deplorables who in the 80’s hated the Russians now look to them as the country to be 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️.

Time for more coffee and maybe a 🥐.

  • The_Wretched

Putin really really really wants the Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012 repealed. This vote and signing shows that Putin isn’t geting his #1 “quo”. Donny might find himself suddenly out of 19% of Rosneft when the shell companies move like an international game of 3 card monty.

    • JohnJay

Of course, when Trumps talk about discussing Russian Adoptions… that actually means they were talking about the Magnitsky Act and sanctions. One of Russia’s retaliations for the Act was stopping US adoptions of Russian orphans.

No surprise there. No doubt he didn’t want the world to see his angry pouty face as he signed. I’m sure it looked very similar to the pic you posted. Poor Trumplethinskin!

    • Halou

Why ever does he feel shy? He used to love signing things he didn’t read.

    • BobSF_94117

Well, that’s entirely for show. There’s no requirement or tradition of public signing of bills.

The legislation was passed with rare and overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress last week.

Bullshit. The GOP votes were because the same bill calls for counterproductive and damaging sanctions against Iran.

  • JCF

Please. He only signed it because he had NO other (face-saving) options—and then tacked on that bitchy signing statement, to show how he REALLY feels.
