AFGHANISTAN: Trump Wants To Fire “Losing” General

NBC News reports:

President Donald Trump has become increasingly frustrated with his advisers tasked with crafting a new U.S. strategy in Afghanistan and recently suggested firing the war’s top military commander during a tense meeting at the White House, according to senior administration officials.

Trump repeatedly suggested that Defense Secretary James Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford replace Gen. John Nicholson, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, because he is not winning the war, the officials said. Trump has not met Nicholson, and the Pentagon has been considering extending his time in Afghanistan.

Former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush went through multiple strategies over the course of their presidencies to try to stabilize Afghanistan. What set Trump apart in the July meeting was his open questioning of the quality of the advice he was receiving.

During the meeting, Trump criticized his military advisers seated around the table in the White House Situation Room for what he said was a losing U.S. position in the war, according to the senior administration officials. One official said Trump pointed to maps showing the Taliban gaining ground, and that Mattis responded to the president by saying the U.S. is losing because it doesn’t have the strategy it needs.

  • bkmn

This should be interesting to watch. I’ve been seeing Josh Marshall of TPM commenting that Kelly may have taken the CoS job contingent on being able to have power over who is in/out at the WH and NSC (Cohen-Watnick, a Trump/Flynn ally was fired today from the NSC). I wonder if Kelly will have any control over this decision.

    • jimbo65

I guess Cohen -Watnick firing is a good thing. McMaster was trying to get rid of him. But Watnick went crying to Bannon and Jared to save his job. He was a hardcore Flynn holdover. And apparently a Devin Nunes buttboi, who came up with that whole Obama unmasking bullshit.

      • bkmn

I also saw yesterday that McMaster and Kelly had an agreement that one of them always had to be in the country to keep an eye on Trump.

And then there is the little detail that McMaster has retained every Obama appointee to the NSC that was there when he took control, so there are several people linked to Obama with free access inside the WH.

    • The circumstantial evidence is compelling.

  • TampaDink

And replace him with who? Eric?

    • We learned yesterday I believe that there was this prankster who fooled many Trump campaign leaders & later WH officials by pretending to be other inner circle Trumpers, including Donald’s head of cybersecurity (he thought he was corresponding with Jared).

Turns out Eric was the only one not fooled.

      • TampaDink

Not the only one fooled…and far from the only fool.

Even a blind pig can find a truffle once in a while.

          • grada3784

You can always be catty with me. I promise I will never rub your fur the wrong way and I have plenty of salmon pouches. But I will string you along.

          • TampaDink

            GROWL!!!!!!!

            Sorry….wish I were closer.

  • Talisman

The only solution is for the west to re-think their treatment of the Middle East. It is not a resource to be plundered, but a people that we should respect.

    • Bluto

Respecting people? Now that’s just crazy talk. /s

  • Bad Tom

Well, Trump, you said “you knew more than the generals.” Why don’t you tell them what the strategy should be?

    We’d all be fascinated.

    • Talisman

I’m sure his strategy would involve more urine.

      • TampaDink

Joint Chiefs of Staff, “well Mr. President, urine charge.”

        • Daniel Trevallee

That is the best comment so far! Thanks for that!!

          • TampaDink

Thank you. Glad it wasn’t “waste”d on you.

        • Bob Conti

Isn’t there some song circa WW I that goes, “Urine the Army now…”

          • TampaDink

True….which would have made military service much more appealing & perhaps encouraged him to overlook his terminal bone spurs.

His “strategy” is to steal off others successes.

    • lymis

Obviously, he thought that all that was necessary would be to just tell the generals to go win the war, and they’d do so.

Because, equally obviously, such a thing wouldn’t have occurred to the last two presidents.

  • clay

. . . and replace him with DeVos’ brother, right?

God forgot about that. That is so scary, it haunts me now

        • TampaDink

It is scary as hell…but based on tonight’s coverage on MSNBC, it sounds like it is no longer hair furor, Pres. Bannon & Puppet master Vlad in charge. The new chief of staff, Gen. Kelly seems to be calling the shots. I don’t see this pattern lasting much longer. Maybe he’ll keep things under control for a couple of days, then our ruthless leader goes on an 18 day vacation. It will be interesting to see how soon he resumes tweeting.

          • Galvestonian

Yeah, Kelly trying to hold ‘Cheetolini Fuckstick’ back is like waiting for Mount Vesuvius to blow. Not quite. The Wall St. crowd hope that the GOP is good for investors. There was some early softening in fear that he’s spark a trade war or a world war, but he seems (to them) to be too incompetent to achieve either.

  • Misutaa Roboto

Back during the election, when our current reality was merely a worst-case nightmare scenario, I was trying to understand exactly what the president’s powers were with regard to dismissing generals. This was the first article I happened upon:
    http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2010/06/fire_at_will.html

It freaked me out when I saw that this Slate article from 2010 contained this sentence at the start of the 2nd paragraph:

“No. The president is the commander in chief of the armed forces, not the CEO. As such, he doesn’t enjoy Donald Trump-like powers to summarily fire service members.

Of course, the president can remove or assign generals to a post of their choosing, and undermine them in a number of ways, so their inability to actually fire them is only a small source of solace.

  • Marides48

I suggest that the Commander in Chief fly to Afghanistan & run the war in person. After all he does know more about it than the generals. Perhaps he needs a a pair of gold plated pistols?

Erin burnett was going on about the DOW’s record high under trumps economy calling it a fair fact, and asking should he deserve the credit for the record high ?

No. No. And no. One big reason because it is still Obama’s economy that the high occurred under. 2. trump has not been able to implement his economic agenda, thus he cannot take credit for something that is not his, and also badmouthed it because the results were not to his liking.

And the record highs in the market are not always good indicator of economic direction, remember the record highs in 2007 before the economy crashed in the fall of the following year ?

Should he be allowed to deregulate everything Obama helped put into place, housing crunch and wallstreet nightmare 2.0.

They’ve GOT to get RID of him!!

His manifest moral and intellectual unfitness is unacceptable, and PEOPLE have got to STOP pretending it’s okay, God DAMN it!

Why is there not ONE strong voice–one strong elected voice in a position of real power–speaking out–loud, proud and defiant–against Trump’s relentless lies, his attacks on the rule of law, his ignorance and hate-mongering?!

Why does this Republic have NO courageous defenders, leading us in the streets to DEMAND his removal from power for OBSTRUCTION and other abuses?

Why aren’t those who conspired to collude with the Russians testifying under oath and in public NOW in Congress? (I read the House is STILL prioritizing investigations into HILLARY!!)

Why are no loud voices raised demanding SECURE elections and access to that TRAITOR’S financial records, records which will PROVE his guilt on so many fronts?!

One of the very many dangerous things about Trump is that he believes that he is smarter and more knowledgeable than he actually is. As a candidate Trump actually said that he knew more about Afghanistan than the generals did.

    From the piece:

Trump Compares Afghanistan to a Famous New York Restaurant

Trump told his advisers that the restaurant, Manhattan’s elite ’21’ Club, had shut its doors for a year and hired an expensive consultant to craft a plan for a renovation. After a year, Trump said, the consultant’s only suggestion was that the restaurant needed a bigger kitchen.

Officials said Trump kept stressing the idea that lousy advice cost the owner a year of lost business and that talking to the restaurant’s waiters instead might have yielded a better result. He also said the tendency is to assume if someone isn’t a three-star general he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and that in his own experience in business talking to low-ranking workers has gotten him better outcomes.

The ’21’ Club, which has been one of Trump’s favorite New York spots, closed for TWO MONTHS in 1987 while it underwent a full renovation and reopened to great fanfare.

Institutional religion intuitively groks this concept, though it often fucks it up in practice.

So surrender your need to be “right and correct.” Surrender your ego.

          Be newborn. Clean.

Replace “oil” with “minerals,” and instead of Iraq you have Afghanistan:

“We go in, we spent $3 trillion. We lose thousands and thousands of lives, and then look, what happens is we get nothing. You know, it used to be the victor belong the spoils. Now, there was no victor there, believe me. There was no victory. But I always said, take the oil.”

Lawrence is SHREDDING Trump right now. Calling Trump weak and saying Kelly is in charge.

    • Hank
    • jimbo65

Yeah. He’s just laying it out there that 45 is any powerful man’s cockholster. First Putin and now Kelly. Who knew he was such a dirty whore. (No offense to whores )

      • SoCalGal20

It’s not like there isn’t a lot to choose from lol.

    • I’ve been saying that all day: President Jabba-the-Bannon was just replaced with President Daddy Kelly.

It remains to be seen how long Kelly lasts, because Donald hates it when the media says he’s not really in charge of anything and being managed like a disobedient baby.

      • SoCalGal20

If Kelly gets too much attention he’ll be out lol

        ^^ That.

At my age, the suspense is life-threatening.

        • Watching Lawrence on MSNBC right now, and they’re openly speculating that Kelly won’t last long…because Kelly might well be too competent for Donald.

          • Lawrence is openly referring to Donald as insane. Literally insane.

          • Ross

I have mentioned previously that I worked for Trump for two years in the 1980s.

Donnie is actually AFRAID of smart, strong men. It was fascinating to watch this when I worked for him. Such men NEVER lasted long.

They make little Donnie too aware of his own incompetence and constant internal fears.

          • I’m always glad when you jump in to share these 1st-hand experiences with this monster. 🙂

          • Snarkaholic

That’s probably why he said that the White House is a dump…he’s not allowed to remove portraits of past presidents from the walls…and every time he walks down the corridors past them, he realizes that, next to their intelligence, accomplishments, and leadership, he’s a loutish, total fraud.

I’m not surprised at all. Infuriated but not surprised.

I’m so fucking sick of Border Patrol. I live about 50 miles north of the Mexico border, in northern San Diego County. There is a Border Patrol station on the 15, just outside of Temecula, not that far away from me. Since Trump was elected I have repeatedly seen Border Patrol cars on the 15, parked just like you would see CHP. I just passed one yesterday parked out of the way so you couldn’t see them right away like any sort of police car looking for speeders. Just, like, randomly on the 15. I have no idea what they’re doing. I’ve never seen them stop anybody but I’ve never seen this before like this.

    • billbear1961

If a Democratic administration were guilty of even one TENTH the bullshit this regime is pulling, the GOP AND the press would be BAYING FOR THEIR BLOOD!!

The congressional Democrats are not–NOT!!–defending this Republic as they SHOULD be!!

They have TONS of ammunition to use against Trump and his regime–the constant lies, the conspiracy to collude, Trump’s repeated and ongoing efforts to obstruct justice, his refusal to divest from his businesses and to turn over his tax returns and other financial records–and should be out in front of the cameras 24/7 attacking these LIARS with the FACTS we already KNOW, denouncing this man who is attempting to place himself ABOVE THE LAW, hammering away at the right’s ongoing COUP, calling out the GOP for aiding and abetting this CRIMINAL regime!!

They should NOT be putting everything on MUELLER’S shoulders!!

They are cowardly weaklings HIDING behind the ordinary citizens of the Resistance!!

They are failing us, providing NO meaningful, consistent and determined LEADERSHIP!!

    • billbear1961

More ABUSE of POWER by these goddamned FASCISTS!!

  • Piet

When will the US learn the lessons that the Russians learned a decade or so before we got involved over there? The conflict we see is not the conflict the Afghan people are fighting, and it’s as unwinnable as any guerrilla war we’ve ever fought. Viet Nam comes to mind. The fact that the US only exists because we fought a combination war — regular troops and guerrilla attacks — seems to have escaped the builders of democracy.

    • Lazycrockett

You can’t force democracy on a people who don’t want/fight for it.

      • And limited wars of occupation always fail inevitably to the total war fought by those who want the invading occupiers out of their homelands.

      • Piet

And you certainly can’t force your own style of democracy on a people who have their own ideas about what democracy should look like for them.

  • Ninja0980

      3. Not that I WANT them to attack them but there are way more conservative Dems in the party.

    • Moebym Reborn

Lovely. It wouldn’t surprise me if, should Kamala Harris run for President in 2020, they’ll try to undermine her campaign like they did Hillary’s, and then smugly declare (if she loses to Trump) that the Democrats aren’t paying attention to their base.

Is Afghanistan even a REAL war, or just another one of those Police Actions; like Korea and Vietnam? Death tolls and destruction in either are obviously horrible, but the “rules” regarding them are quite different.

They are crashingly, mindnumbingly and unimaginatively boring with their stable of strawmen as ready responses for any situation: Soros, Schumer, Obama, Hillary Clinton, Podesta. There is no original thought, no research, no considered opinion, just a never ending exercise in pointing to any one of them as the root of all evil in American politics. And always, in some cases, the not so subtle whiff of Antisemitism.

        • RoFaWh

… the not so subtle whiff stench of Antisemitism….

          • Pat

They don’t even hide it anymore, that’s how confident these scumbags are that there will be no repercussions.

    • Again further evidence Kelly’s one demand for taking over as WH CoS was, “I get to clean house. No vetoes, no overrides, not even from family. The day you tell me I’m not actually CHIEF of the fucking White House STAFF is the day you’ve fired me or I quit, got it?”

      • DaddyRay

        • Same. Because SOMEone is going to around him for, well, ‘reasons.’ To keep someone else from being fired to to plea against being fired. Or to shovel some more Russian/wingnut propaganda onto his desk. Or simply to say, “Y’know, everybody thinks Kelly is now the acting President and they’re right.”

          • Cuberly

Your last sentence sounds oddly comforting. In degrees of completely fucked up, that, THAT, was comforting.

        • Lazycrockett

No one is gonna keep Ivanka and Jared from Drumpf. Either Kelly is clued in on how mental Drumpf is and needs his anchors or he gets shit canned.

Which is good because, well duh.
But what gets me is people acting as if the possibility that the Trumps and the Russians didn’t explicitly and knowingly work together could change the fact he, for whatever reason, puts their interests and spin ahead of US interests and values, and not just during the campaign but consistently since taking office.

        • -M-

Yeah, it’s bad all right. The one other detail that’s giving me some hope are the signs the Congressional GOPers no longer fear him and are beginning look like they’re realizing keeping him is a losing proposition.

      • another_steve

Trump and his people have tried for six months to make all this incredibly complicated, but it’s not.

Please follow this simple two-step process:

        (1) Do you have anything to hide? If no, disclose everything. Your tax returns, everything. If yes, go to (2).

        (2) You’re fucked and you’re all going to prison.

        • The NYT editorial piece lays it all out very simply and succinctly. The whole scene, including Russia’s initial cautious “are they actually willing to collude with us?” plausibly deniable approach.

I don’t think they quite expected the eagerness with which an American candidate and his campaign would respond, “ABSOLUTELY! Give us Clinton/DNC dirt and we’ll do ANYTHING you ask!”

I’ve been around since LBJ (actually also JFK, but I was less than a year old when he was assassinated). I never thought I’d witness anyone as obviously crooked as Nixon, nor as willing to treat with enemies for political gain as Reagan, nor as obviously unfit and incompetent as Dubya. Yet here we are. With a man as President who is a clear and present danger to the nation and to the world itself…and the majority party who could remove him does almost nothing.

          • -M-

The Russians have been grooming Donald as an agent for influence for decades, whether or not he knows it.

            Love you, Becca.

My political awakening coincided with JFK’s run for the presidency. I was a young teenager then, idealistic and full of energy.

            How far.

Don’t forget Bush pere. He’s as guilty as Reagan.

Every GOP presidency after Eisenhower has been an exercise in pushing the envelope of illegal/unconstitutional behavior and getting away with it. If Nixon had gone to jail, as he should have, a different lesson would have been learned and we’d be living in a much better country.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

What’s ironic is that certain businesses WANT immigrants to come over here like the tech industry. The more Trump is in office, the fewer of them will WANT to come. The one thing the GOP always peddles is the idea they’re sooooooooooo good for business but with their freaky allegiance to nazi racists & fundajelicals, they really need to see the reality that GOP = economy clusterfuck.

        • Some folks around these parts might know my wife and I lived in India for about 3 years (06-09) and we’re still close with friends over there.

It’s commonly being recommended new highly-qualified tech workers in India do NOT try to go work in America right now. They’re saying to go work in SE Asia, Australia, or Europe now, if possible.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’d definitely go to someplace else that has settled universal healthcare. Seriously, that would be a huge disincentive to go to America.

          • Well, in India there isn’t universal healthcare, but it’s dirt cheap, so there’s this notion (over there) that paying for it is no big deal.

My wife paid more for car service to and from Bangalore for cataract surgery than she did for the surgery itself.

The bigger deal is Indians being harassed here in the U.S., like those two guys who were shot in a hate crime. It got BIG press over there and basically they’re now saying it’s just not safe for Indian workers to come to America.

          • Cuberly

Heh, Macron in France seems to be super cool with tech moving their way….

And the thing is that the chances are that major advances in various sciences will not be made in the US. My kid is in genomics (brag/not brag), and the amount of computer programming they use is amazing. As she pointed out, it took the pioneers of genomics basically a lifetime to get a complete genome of a species. Now? Not so much by a long shot. Of course, it sounds like it’s still in its infancy, as assessed by the number of calls I get from her complaining about some program or another not doing what it is supposed to, but that’s gonna change. So if you’re into programming AND biology….

Hindustan Times reported on Canada’s Census 2016 language reports today:

The number of Punjabi-speakers has increased by just over 18%, and the total is at 568,375 people. Hindi is among the languages that has “experienced the largest increases”, with speakers numbering nearly 175,000.

Among other Indian languages, the Gujarati-speaking population has gone up by nearly 21%. Tamil is another Indian language in the list of the top 22 immigrant tongues, but has seen a smaller increase — about 10%.

I listen to CBC a lot, and people there were delighted that more applicants were showing up for tech/specialized jobs in Canada.

Historical perspective: the fake biologist Lysenko was best buddies with Stalin and managed to parlay this relationship into complete destruction of orthodox genetic work in Russian labs. This set back Russian biological research for some decades; ever notice how, while the rest of the world is decoding fossil DNA, Russia never joins in?

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I always notice that there’s never any move by either the moneyed interests or the Trumpeteers to go after the people who actually HIRE the undocumented. I think it would be hilarious for all the farmers to have the ICE agents after THEM for once.

      • Cuberly

Most likely they voted for Donnie, so they’re in the clear.

        • Some are…a lot aren’t. Farmers throughout the country are freaking out because the *documented* immigrant workers they depended on for their fields are gone.

ICE bullshit has increased local county jails and prisons by 17% this 6 months alone. ICE is evil.

        • William

ICE doesn’t pay the local jails to keep inmates they want detained. That is why so many cities are against these ‘hold for pick up’ orders.
