Los Angeles To Host 2028 Summer Olympics

The Los Angeles Times reports:

Los Angeles has reached an agreement with Olympic leaders on terms that will pave the way for hosting the Summer Games in 2028 instead of 2024, according to a source close to the negotiation.

The deal will bring the Olympics back to Southern California for a third time, after Los Angeles hosted the Games in 1984 and 1932. It also opens the door for Paris to host the Games seven years from now.

An International Olympic Committee announcement is expected later today. This bid competition began as a simple race for 2024, but all that changed in June when the IOC decided that, with two strong candidates, it would take the unusual step of giving 2024 to one city and 2028 to the other.

The next three Olympics will all be hosted in Asia: Pyeongchang 2018, Tokyo 2020, Beijing 2022.

O/T: But this needs to be seen to be believed.

#BREAKING: Dem campaign chairman: Dems willing to fund candidates who oppose abortion rights http://hill.cm/tA0Y3zG

    • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

Selling out the left since 1980.

      • Todd20036

Yeah, I’m not seeing the logic behind a democratic candidate that thinks women are garbage.
OTOH, we are probably talking about garbage states anyway

        • SoCalGal20

The reality is, in most areas the Dem is not going to be anti-choice. However, if they want to run a Dem in Bumfuck, ND or whatever it may be that the only way they will have a chance to beat an R candidate is to either be anti-choice themselves or give some wishy/washy, non-committal answer on that. OTOH, it didn’t help that candidate that Bernie supported so…

My feeling is this will mostly be a non-issue with the slate of candidates I’ve seen so far.

    • Todd20036

      Is there such an animal?

    • TK

OMG! Not one fucking new piece of information here. But OH the drama. clickbait much, Hill?

“House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) have both argued against party litmus tests, saying there’s room for people with different opinions on abortion. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), another influential voice, has echoed that argument.”

Democrats are unlikely to win the 24 seats they need to recapture control without contesting more conservative districts. The last time Democrats won control, in the 2006 midterm elections, the party recruited — and supported financially — a significant number of Democrats who did not entirely support abortion rights, including former Reps. Brad Ellsworth (Ind.), Baron Hill (Ind.), Heath Shuler (N.C.) and Jason Altmire (Pa.).

“Both [then-DCCC Chairman] Rahm Emanuel and [then-Democratic National Committee Chairman] Howard Dean with his 50 state strategy understood that in order to win districts that had eluded Democrats in previous cycles, they were going to have to field candidates who didn’t look like national Democrats,” Altmire told The Hill. “People understood the class of ’06 was driven largely by the centrist candidates.”

      • Todd20036

Sanders? The cultists should be pissed, but probably aren’t

        • SoCalGal20

St. Bernie can do no wrong so it’s ok. /s

      • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

Then the Democratic Party needs to stand up and state that they’re the “Moderate” Party instead of diluting the left. Ya can’t have your cake and then canibalize it too. With the HRC it was called throwing trans people under the bus for a cookie.

        • TK

The D Party is a mix. And each step moves us forward. But by all means, continue losing because you can’t find a candidate to pass your purity test.

          • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

I haven’t lost a thing, Democrats have, and that’s the point. You can’t court both sides.

    • bambinoitaliano

Did someone alerted this idiot about Moochi short career span for selling out?

    • Rillion

Good. They can be like pro-gay Republicans, present but completely sidelined when actual policy is made.

      Fuch you.

        Fugue me?

Justin Trudeau banned anti-abortion candidates in 2014, ahead of the 2015 election.

The Liberal leader [Justin Trudeau] told reporters Wednesday that anyone interested in running for the Liberal Party of Canada in 2015 will not pass the party’s green-lighting process if they do not support key policies such as a woman’s right to choose, same-sex marriage and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I personally think there are some fundamental issues that are non-negotiable – a woman’s right to choose should be one of them.

He has learned the secret of Bannon’s flexibility – and is off to practice this new yoga trick.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

        Steve Sensei Bannon.

      • Miji

I’d just like to reiterate that Mooch never clearly stated that Bannon was succeeding at sucking his own dick, just TRYING. I have a hard time believing he has either of the necessary qualities to achieve that.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

    Did the Mucci resign?

  • That_Looks_Delicious

I just don’t see the Pyongyang games really happening. Hopefully they have a backup plan. Oh, and WTF, IOC?

    • Tawreos

It is Pyeonchang, a city in South Korea, not North Korea. I made the same mistake when I first saw it.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

        Ah, thank you.

      • Tor

I think a backup plan is still called for. There may not be a South Korea in 2018.

    • Rambie

And Beijing so quickly?! They hosted 2008 IIRC

      • Capritaur

        It’s for the winter Olympics

      • Danieruw

It was that or Almaty, Kazakhstan. I’ve been to Almaty. The IOC wouldn’t think it luxurious enough for them.

      • Kruhn

Those are the Winter Games. They’re considered separate from the Summer Games.

        • Rambie

Yes, but it’s still pretty quick for the same city to host both. Yes, I know they used to be combined.

          • Kruhn

            Should’ve put that caveat first.

    • It is being heal at a South Korean winter resort — with a name like Pyongyang, but not at the North Korean capital. The plan is to let North Korea host some of the Winter Games games at a ski resort they built that is used by the communist party elite in North Korea. The South Koreans are trying to get the North Koreans involved in the games, but the current environment is proving to be elusive to say the least. The South Korean winter resort, PyeongChang, is in northern South Korea but more to the eastern part of the island than Seoul. https://www.olympic.org/pyeongchang-2018

A step RNC lawyers describe as precautionary, but necessary, as investigations continue into Russia’s meddling in the election.

  • JWC

I am still a strong supporter of having 2 permanant Olympic sites. One summer one winter. The current model pits city against city the Winning city is usually close to bankruptcy and never quite finished then stuck with a bunch of buildings that are barely functional/ Rather have two permanant venues and all participant countries pay a shared agreed stipend for upheed and upgrades… A thought

    • Jay Mills

You are thinking logically again. Please stop.

      • JWC

        ya I know dammit Sorry

    • Hunter M

The olympic committee always needs a new city to grift. There’s no money to be made with your idea.

      • JWC

thats the rest of my point The IOCis as crooked and rigged as the Scoocer assn. Disolvethe IOC down to a mere administrative as to the upkeed and dispersal of funds totally transparent Yoy would need another toke if you do not believe the IOC is crooked

        • Ginger Snap

          All sports are crooked.

          • JWC

to accept things as they are and mull “oh well” is one thing To know what things are and want to change them for the better is the bigger issue

    • gothambear

Montreal almost went bust after the 1976 games – then L.A.’s robust success in 1984 brought it all back. I have to say that there were a lot of civic and charity benefits in L.A. from the Olympics but no one has been able to match it. And maybe never again, sadly.

      • JWC

Some make it some don’t Vancouver was left with buildings that wouldn’t sell an ice arena that 3/4 is closed

    • Kruhn

Where does Beijing have winter facilities. I never thought of the Chinese capital as a winter wonderland.

      • JWC

oh they would just conscript a million citizens to make snow or else

  • Grimes

LA saved the 84 games and turned a profit. Leave it to LA to save the Olympics now with the standard of using only existing facilities. No wasting millsions on building that will not be used months after the Games are over. Congrats LA!!

  • Jay Mills

At least DT will not get this propaganda platform, unless he’s still “in office”, a not so far-fetched possibility.

  • Rex

Washington D.C. is currently hosting the Greatest Shitshow on Earth.

    • JWC

Shit professional writers can’t even keep up with this train wreck

      • Rambie

DC has because a reality dysfunction zone.

    • Todd20036

Sort of. Trump is hardly even IN DC.
Not that I’m complaining, mind you

    • bcarter3

Yeah, but the only sport included is golf, and the same incompetent buffoon keeps hogging the golf course.

  • ArchiLaw

I used to care about the Olympics.

    • ElenorRigby

Yeah, now it’s just “who can give their athletes the most drugs without getting caught, which company can make the most money sponsoring it.

      • Todd20036

And which city is willing to pay the most bribes, regardless as to their human rights records.

        • JWC

          it’s refined prostitution

    • Kruhn

      Haven’t since 1992

  • Johnny Wyeknot

  • Talisman

Has the dumpster tweeted about how he accomplished this?

It’s only fake news until he tweets about how this makes America great…

  • The opening and closing ceremonies are to be held at the new LA Rams Stadium complex near LAX in Inglewood, is an extravaganza — 80,000 seats, on a 300 acre Disneyesque entertainment complex. Dorms will be at UCLA in Westwood will host the “Olympic Village”, not a bad place for athletes to be, and very close to the LA West Hollywood LGBTQ Community. Perhaps they can hold a special pride during the celebrations for all the cute fellow minded attending assuming West Hollywood is still pink in flavor at the time. The Wilshire Blvd subway should be finished and running to downtown Los Angeles by 2028, linking every site together. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_Stadium_at_Hollywood_Park

      many have turned it down

  • Gustav2
  • 2patricius2

Is this the third time for LA?

  • SoCalGal20

I think L.A. is the last one to run a profitable Olympics in 1984.

    • Kruhn

Actually Seoul, Barcelona, and Atlanta showed profits. Don’t know about Sydney or Beijing.

  • Ginger Snap

Since Sochi 2014 I am 100% done with the Olympics.

  • Dazzer

Having volunteered at the London 2012 Games, all I can say is that volunteering for the Olympics – and more importantly – Paralympic Games is one of the best things I’ve ever experienced in my life.

(and it even beats seeing Winston Churchill’s naked bum.)

I can’t recommend volunteering at the Olympics/Paralympics highly enough to any human being who has the opportunity to experience it.

    • Kruhn

Volunteering for a IOC meeting when.I was a mere whelp of 15 in San Juan in 1989, showed me the ideals and how the IOC betrays them.

  • Robincho

It’s so cute when the Olympioids act like there’ll even BE a 2028…

  • J Ascher

Sure, only 44 years between Olympiads in LA, why not? I was there in ’84 but wouldn’t go back for the ’28 Games.
