Trump: Except For The Late, Great Abraham Lincoln, I Can Be More Presidential Than Any President [VIDEO]

Speaking at his campaign rally in Youngtown, Ohio tonight, Trump told the crowd, “Sometimes they say, ‘He doesn’t act presidential.’ And I say, with the exception of the late, great Abraham Lincoln, I can be more presidential than any president that’s held this office. That I can tell you. It’s real easy.”

Points for mentioning that Lincoln is dead, unlike Fredrick Douglass, who has done an amazing job and is getting recognized more and more.

Just when you think he can’t get any more ridiculous (at least in a single 24 hour period)…

Just wait until tomorrow. Every day is worse than the last. It’s like we’ve been on a six-month meth binge

  • DreadPikathulhu

The GOP base has been primed for this demagogue by decades of talk radio, Breitbart, and Fox News. Appropriating the term “fake news” made the bubble impenetrable. Assuming we get the GOP out of power, it will take decades to recover from this.

    • houstonray

Was discussing this with some friends the other day. Trump is the culmination of everything spewed by Fox and then Rush and Drudge and Breitbart and InfoWars and conspiracies and lies about every Democrat that has been in office during that time. They just needed Trump to make it cohesive.

      We are screwed.

  • SoCalGal20

HOLY SHIT. This guy is Trump’s nominee to head the Criminal Division at DOJ. And he’ll get in because Dems don’t have the votes to stop it and the GOP doesn’t give a shit. Welcome to the Authoritarian (and Kleptocratic) States of America.

I posted about this earlier today on JMG and have no idea why it’s getting virtually zero mainstream press coverage. I only heard about it in passing on another blog site. It’s incredibly disturbing to say the least. If there was any question where we’re heading as a country, this answers it!

Totally irrelevant, but I stumbled across this today.

“Van Ronk was among 13 people arrested at the Stonewall Inn June 28, 1969—the night that the Stonewall Riots, which many cite as the start of the gay rights movement, began. The New York Times reported the next day that he was arrested and later parolled on his own recognizance for having thrown a heavy object at a patrolman.”

Saying someone is “presidential,” like saying someone has “class,” is a moniker others bestow on you. It’s not something you designate yourself.

Drumpf is the guy who says “I have a big dick,” or “I’m incredibly smart,” or “I’m really talented,” For starters, it has oft been my experience that those who do, don’t have to talk about it. As for intelligence, talent, or class, those traits are usually quite self-evident…and don’t require blatant advertisement. Lastly, if Drumpf claims he can be more presidential than any president, except Lincoln. GREAT. We’ve been waiting for him to be even a faint glimmer of presidential for 6 months now. At what point does he intend to start?

Trump talks about grabbing women by the pussy. Trump hopes his opponent will be murdered. Trump is on vacation more than he is in the WH.

Trump poses seductively with his own daughter.

Trump treats his (current) wife with disdain.

Trump trash talks his own candidate.

Trump refuses to listen to intelligence briefings.

      Trump refuses to read bills.

Trump refuses to cease his private business ventures.

Trump refuses to hire qualified cabinet members, only loyal ones.

Trump threatens to fire attorney generals.

And that’s just off the top of my head.

      His speech at the BSA.

      His campaign rallies.

Gods. W was presidential in comparison. William Henry Harrison was more presidential.

Yes, and, I’m not a lawyer, but as I understand it, since he’s actively campaigning, not-for-profits can’t speak against him without violating IRS rules and risking their 501(c)3 status. Trump filed for the next election very early – it is rare to file before the mid-terms. I think this is why.

    • zhera

Between the rallies and the golfing, it’s kinda amazing he can come up with all that mischief! And the tweets!

I was glad to see that neither CNN or MSNBC covered this rally. The only network to cover it was Fox. I watched it to see the crowd size and it was considerably smaller. You could see many empty seats around the venue, the upper level was empty and the crowd noise was nowhere near what it was in previous rallies. My conclusion was, he’s slipping among the Deplorables.

    • Cuberly

Why is it, at the rallies, the people behind him always appear to looks so disinterested.

      • GayOldLady

Because they’re extras. Did you notice how old that crowd was? I could picture Nursing Home vans idling in the parking lot.

        • Cuberly

lol…the rally he did before this there were two teenaged twin girls in the audience holding signs. During the whole thing they were looking around and barely reacting to Donnie. But they just kept holding the signs.

I saw that. This time it was 2 old women behind him

What’s surreal and unsettling is finding out how Twinkies are made. Only about 6 of their 37 ingredients are anything that would normally be recognized as “food”. An author named Steve Ettlinger spent months of his life researching the Twinkie, even travelling 1600 ft. below ground to see where some of its key ingredients are mined. He wrote a book about it called “Twinkie, Deconstructed” which is fascinating.

Don’t feel bad. I wish I could give up meat — mammals especially — but I can’t. Or cheese: rennet I think is still mostly produced from animal sources.

          • That_Looks_Delicious

I saw a documentary on cheese where they said that most of the rennet used nowadays is artificial.

          • Rambie

You’re right, and looks like most cheeses produced in North America and Europe use that method. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennet

“In reading Heller’s statement for why he’d support for the motion to proceed — part of a series of shifting positions that Heller has taken on health care — I was struck by how confusing all of it must be to voters who aren’t following the debate very carefully.”

“In general, confusion is something you want to avoid with voters, especially on matters like health care where voters are inherently nervous about changes from the status quo. If the GOP considers some very severe bills — such as a full repeal of Obamacare — before eventually passing a more moderate one, voters will be further confused, especially given that many members of Congress will have indicated their support for one of the more severe bills at various points in the months-long debate. I wouldn’t expect Republicans to get all that much benefit of the doubt from voters, in other words, given how the process has gone down.”

I’m sure the Father of our Country might call this clown a damnable poltroon, if not something a lot stronger. Something along the lines of what he called General Charles Lee at the Battle of Monmouth.

    • Karl Dubhe

      What did he say?

Some of us are from families which were Loyalists. 🙂

      God save the Queen. 😀

      • Zeldacat

At this point if they wanted to take us back and restore some measure of sanity, I’d be all for it.

        • Karl Dubhe

Fortunately, for you and them, they’d refuse; and so would you. 🙂

      • Oscarlating Wildely

Interestingly, I recently discovered how a good amount of Quakers in NYC were Loyalists. Never knew that. Flushing, Qeens: Fascinating and often overlooked historical place.

      • grada3784

Lee ordered a retreat. Washington countermanded that order and led a charge that won the battle. That led to the poltroon name that Washington laid on Lee.

        • grada3784

I forget if it was damnable poltroon or goddamned poltroon. Since Washington had von Steuben nearby, it could easily been the second; the man had a mouth.

        • Karl Dubhe

          Thanks. 🙂

I did look, but what I found didn’t include that word.

          • grada3784

I forget where I saw it, but this should give you an idea:

But after several hours of fighting, and with the main army nowhere in
sight, Lee retreated from the battlefield. When Washington finally met
up with Lee on the road near Monmouth Courthouse, New Jersey, he cursed
his second in command. Washington was so vehemently upset at Lee for
fleeing from the British that, as General Charles Scott reported, the
            “leaves shook on the tree.”

          • Karl Dubhe

It does seem to have been worth more than a mere word. 🙂

            Well, from your pov.

          • grada3784

Remember, too, Washington has been sanitized into sainthood. Mos of the stuff written about him is a load of crap.

          • UrsusArctos

And Americans don’t like acknowledging that a disgraced German homo-sexual (von Stueben) shaped up the Continental Army. For several years I did my mom’s DAR chapter yearbook. I always placed quotes from von Steuben, Pulaski, Lafayette, and other “foreigners” who midwifed the revolution as watermarks and filler text. Some of the gals caught it, but most were oblivious.

          • Karl Dubhe

I’m foreign, so I didn’t grow up listening to those stories. 🙂

Canadian tpp, so I’m inclined not to believe everything I read about him either. 😀

So aside from the shitshow in Washington today, my boss got fired today. I went to lunch, came back, the boss’s boss came by to my group to tell us that we were meeting in her office, we went there and she’s like, “Alisha is being let go. We just wanted to let you guys know why there were people packing up things at her desk.” Oh, and she assured us our jobs were safe and that we’re still going to Las Vegas “eventually”. There’s definitely some management bullshit going on. This really sucks because I liked my boss. I don’t trust my boss’s boss, and who fucking knows who we’ll end up with now. Ugh. Fucking office politics.

It depends on the office. Some of them use this WAY over the top (imo) way of dealing with people who have been fired, supposedly to deescalate the situation or something but it’s really more WTAF than anything, and I think more likely to piss people off for being treated like shit but what do I know?

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

        Lindsey Graham, S.C.
        Dean Heller, Nev.
        Mike Lee, Utah
        Jerry Moran, Kan.
        Lisa Murkowski, Alaska
        Rand Paul, Ky.

I believe the “not harsh enough” no’s are Paul, Lee, and maybe Cotton.

        • safari

They voted to proceed. They get candy for the next vote in, what, 20 hours of debate from now?

          • safari

“We give your state the choice” [to fund on their own] should be sufficient given enough pork.

          • clay

But that requires 60 votes, not 50+1 (and they’re not offering anywhere near enough pork– only 25% of the pork in Obama Care).

          • safari

Under which rules that are subject to how many votes?

          • clay

If they want to go the minimal 50+1 route, they have to stick to purely budget issues under their own god-damned rules.

Since this is no longer 14 old white GOP men in a locked room, they fucking with their own rules just makes it publicly look like they had to cheat in order to exclude the Democrats (and Independents).

          • safari

But: doesn’t that all rely upon the filibuster remaining at 60 votes?

          • clay

pretty much, as long as filibuster is allowed to remain, votes on “real” bills (rather than on budget reconciliations) require 60 votes.

          • clay

Yes, they did, but we also get public, on the record, evidence of the GOP’s lack of unity and bi-partisan cooperation.

          • clay

I think it’s 20 hours from, what, 2:30 this afternoon? But that only counts work time, not while they’re asleep and/or in committee/conference?

Next up: McConnell can go back to RyanCare 2.0, which he tossed out this afternoon. McConnell can attempt a budgetary, only “clean” repeal that would require only 50+1 votes, but that has not been scored by the CBO except in it’s more expansive form last winter, and would likely send 20 million off the insurance rolls by 2020, rather than by 2023 which means it might lose by 5-7.

PLUS! Watching this, are they convincing anyone they can come up with a better replacement by 2020, let alone in time to secure the insurance markets?

        • Michael R

I thought they could only lose a couple , did the numbers change ?

          • clay

They could only loose a couple and they lost a lot more than that. This is today’s second vote. The first, to proceed, they could loose two, which they did. The second, to approve McConnell’s TrumpCare 2.0 had to win over 8 Dem/Inde, which it did not AND it lost 7 GOP.

        • Oscarlating Wildely

And note: Toomey, that flagrant asshole, of the big purple state o’ PA, is further to the right than someone from Kansas on this vote. Kan. Fucking. Sas.

          • clay

Having ties to both– Toomey is better at self-deception than is Moran.
Toomey in the SW Philly suburbs yesterday– “We’re not going to kick 40% of the people off Medicaid, we’re just not going to reimburse any expenses for them.”
Moran– “I won’t vote for anything that cuts reimbursements to rural hospitals.”

This, dammit, is why Republicans win, no matter how awful the thing is that they’re trying to pass–they never give up. How many times has this terrible bill, in all its variations, been brought to a vote? How many times did they pass the repeal of the ACA when they knew it wouldn’t count, just for practice? Democrats, there’s a lesson here.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Sadly, many people will believe it because, the fact of the matter is, most people under the age of 35 have not a clue as to the history, let alone the reality, of what made America great in the past. Not saying all people, but most. Just like in our own community, many young ones have no clue about what came before, hence they too buy into this bullshit and call themselves gays for Trump. WOW! There’s a stunning implicit racism in the BBC headline and tweet. They clearly state in the article that sperm counts are only declining in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. There have been no sperm count declines observed during that same period in Asia, Africa or Latin America. Non-white people are still people, BBC.

O/T: Time for a propaganda film about railroads from 1955.

There is a game called Rail Baron that was just as ruthless to play as Monopoly. You move around the board and buy up Rail routes and if you get control of a region you bankrupt anyone who has to travel your rail lines.

        • Treant

Fun story: About five years ago, I lost my Timex in May. I looked everywhere because I love that watch–it’s one with extra-large numbers and extra-bold hands, and easy for me to read.

No dice. Gone. Forever, or so I thought.

Then I emptied the compost bin in August after it had fully stabilized. And there’s the watch. The band was gone–the leather was eaten by the bacteria–and it had sat in 2 weeks of 160 degrees, followed by months of fully saturated conditions.

The time was still accurate to the second and, after cleaning, the watch looked like new.

It ran for two more years, and probably would have gone a lot longer but I think the exposure damaged it. I replaced it with a twin of the old one, which is on my wrist right now.

          • safari

          • thatotherjean

I know what you mean. I bought the cheap Timex kid’s watch, because it’s small but readable, and for going on two years now, it’s the most accurate timepiece in the house. I change the band to one that runs under the back of the watch to keep it off my wrist, since I have no idea what metal the back contains; but with the replacement band, it doesn’t set off my metal allergy. It’s the best $13 I’ve spent in a long time. I hope it runs forever.

          • Treant

Most of the backs are 316 Stainless Steel, some are 304. In either case, harmless–the chromium is trivalent and it’s safe enough to eat off of. Molybdenum, as in the 316, is actually required in tiny amounts.

Yay. Another source was saying that this is the first Democratic win in a NH special election since 1984.

Interesting to note that NH is not a state where Trump’s approval rating is especially low; at 45%, though not great, it’s Trump’s highest approval rating in New England or the Northeast. The other states that have had special elections since January where Republicans were able to hold onto seats (MT for Zinke’s seat, KS for Pompeo’s seat and SC for Mulvaney’s seat) are all among those 17 states where Trump’s approval rating is still 50% or higher.

    • Ninja0980

IMO, these are the races Democrats should be focusing on.
Putting all that money and hype into the George special election was STUPID.
We want to get power back and stop voter suppression etc.
Then fight it at the local and state level by getting Democrats elected.

      • SoCalGal20

A lot of the money in GA-06 on the Dem side came from small donors and I don’t think it was stupid. They made the Rs spend a bunch of money they wouldn’t otherwise have spent on a race that could well end up with a different result in 16 months. But, yes, Dems need to focus on the stare and local level races for sure.
