White House Floats Ted Cruz For Attorney General

Ted Cruz is widely hated by his own chamber, so approval seems rather iffy. From the Washington Post:

Among the names being floated as possible Sessions replacements are Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and former New York City mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, according to people familiar with the conversations.

Giuliani dismissed a report floating his name as a possible attorney general and told CNN that Sessions “made the right decision under the rules of the Justice Department” to recuse himself. He did not return a message seeking comment.

Cruz had said previously that he “did not think it was necessary to appoint a special counsel,” but when Mueller was appointed, he praised him as “an excellent choice.” A spokesman for Cruz could not be reached for comment.

Some Trump advisers said that this process could be agonizing for the attorney general, with the president’s anger flaring but no decision being reached for weeks or maybe months, leaving Sessions isolated from the White House. Sessions was at the White House complex on Monday for a routine meeting but did not meet with the president.

Trump can’t fire Sessions for fear of instantly bringing forward an obstruction of justice charge, so they are resorting to f*cking with Sessions’ head to make him resign.
Something tells me Sessions love his AG job, isn’t planning to leave, and is living for the day he can kick off his anti-cannabis campaign next week.

    • Todd20036

Cruz is so dangerous because he’s very smart. He got rich as a sleazy trial lawyer being being smart and evil. That’s a very dangerous combination.)

    • That_Looks_Delicious

I never thought I’d say something like this, but I sincerely hope Sessions hangs onto his job as AG, forcing Donnie to fire him if he wants him gone. Like just about everyone who posts here, I think Sessions will be a terrible AG, but he did one thing right when he recused himself from the Russian investigations. And, of course, it’s that one right thing that has Donnie all upset. Firing Sessions would simply fuel any obstruction of justice charge Mueller is already investigating, and confirmation hearings for anyone would be popcorn time, especially Ted Cruz. I wonder if Natalia Veselnitskaya is available.

    • Lazycrockett

The problem with Sessions is the longer he stays the more corrupt the police, ICE, voter registration and numerous other racist shit will become
      further established and enforced.

      • clay

Yes, but if Trump (Pence) is already in search mode, that might continue despite beleaguered low-regard Beauregard’s absence.

The only place to throw a wrench might be ICE– there are enough GOP senators moderate on immigration to veto him, but would they?

      • And you don’t think his replacement will be as bad or worse on all those issues?

To this we’ve come. Arguing about whether to keep someone horrible because their replacement might even be worse. FML

        • Lazycrockett

Drumpf is looking for someone to make the Mueller investigation go away and most likely be more than willing to forgo the racist southern ideology to get the next AG to do his bidding.

          • Sessions should never have been confirmed but he was and recusing himself is probably the only ethical thing he is going to do in that job and that’s what’s going to get him fired? I think Trump is hoping to be mean enough to him so he’ll quit but Sessions is an old unrepentant racist so I wouldn’t count on it.

What a shit show. Is there anyone in that whole fucking party to root for? Anyone with even a shred of integrity? I can’t think of a single elected official Republican with even a molecule of dignity at this point.

          • Nowhereman

            I can’t either. Sad.

      • SFBruce

You’re absolutely right; Sessions is a real danger. But I still hope he forces Donnie to fire him. Of course, your point makes Donnie a true idiot; he won’t find a more dedicated conservative warrior than Sessions, but Donnie has no core principles, so all he sees is someone who won’t stop the Mueller investigation. It seems to me that Sessions hanging on to his job is the lesser jeopardy for the country.

O/T: From the judge permitting Kobach-a-palooza (the voter info collection) to proceed:

“At most, plaintiff has shown that its members will suffer an increased
risk of harm if their already publicly available information is
    collected by the commission.”

So, that’s apparently no biggie, and the WH is free to proceed.

    • clay

There’s still the NAACP’s suit pending in NY Federal Court. They allege Trump and surrogate statements show the commission was set up with the intent to discriminate against black and Latino voters.

The group in the previous case had to show actual harm, not merely increased risk of harm. The WH did have to change how/where they were going to compile the data.

      • Lumpy Gaga

O/T but as I mentioned earlier, today marks seven years since marriage equality came to NY.
And for anyone who thinks it was easy or who says that’s how it should be done nationwide, go fuck yourselves.
As Joe and others here in NY can attest to, the battle for marriage equality was as ugly and vicious as you can get with death threats and protests galore.
My family and my in-laws had the “fun” of seeing a protest here in Syracuse where folks were holding up signs at Syracuse University saying people like me and the hubby should be put to death.
This is the same protest Maggie the monster gushed about on TV too.
All the people who say think of the children had no concern over young children like the ones in my family being scared their uncles would get killed.
To see that repeated in all other states… no, just no.
Civil rights should never, EVER be up to a public vote or legislature vote, ever.
I celebrate us getting equality (hubby and I married that fall) but I will never forget all the venom spewed either.
    Sorry for the rant.

    • TimCA

I was here on JMG at the time. I remember there was a Republican from Buffalo who was considered a possible swing vote and he stated he was weighing comments he received via Twitter. Even though I am not a resident of NY State and had no interest in having a Twitter account, I created one just for the purpose of Tweeting my support. While never lying about my geographic location, I created the user name BuffaloBob in the hopes my messages would carry some weight. 🙂

      • Ninja0980

That would be Mark Grisanti, who did end up voting yes and made marriage equality possible in NY State.
It took a while but the bigots that drove the other three Republicans who voted yes out of office got him too.
He’s a judge now so it hasn’t been a total loss for him but still, he paid a political price for his vote.
And any homocon that wants to talk about how supportive Republicans are of same sex marriage needs to know that on the local, state and federal level here in NY, any Republican who supported us was either primaried or retired from office, Richard Hanna being the last one.
Won’t hear a peep from the Log Cabin or LGBT folks for Trump about that though.

      Read about her.
Breaks my heart to know how so many families abandoned their flesh and blood.. and for what?

      • Blake J Butler

Religion. Believing they can get sick from touching or being close to the person in question. And in some cases both and money. One of the victims was rejected by his aunts and let him die in Ruth’s care because he wasn’t getting help from anyone else, and she had to go to lengths to find a cemetary that would allow her to bury him. After learning he died, they went into his house wearing hazmat suits to collect his belongings of value.

I’m not a firm believer in hell, but if there is, those two “C”‘s belong there for rejecting their nephew.

        • Ninja0980

Same with my friend’s “parents” who reject their son to this day for the same reasons those vile women did.
Come December 3rd, when NY’s state senate rejected marriage equality (when it was controlled by Democrats no less), it will mark eight years since he last spoke to them.
Sad to say, it will soon be nine, ten and beyond.
And all because his parents care more about what their church thinks then their own flesh and blood.

    http://www.npr.org/2017/07/20/538363825/conservative-political-blogger-confirmed-for-seat-on-federal-appeals-court?utm_medium=RSS=ninatotenberg

On a party-line vote, the U.S. Senate voted Thursday to confirm President Trump’s most controversial judicial nominee to date.

He is John Bush, a Kentucky lawyer and political blogger whose posts disparaged gay rights and compared the Supreme Court’s abortion decision in Roe v. Wade to its pro-slavery 1857 Dred Scott decision.

And he is now a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit.

Blogging under a fake name, Bush posted more than 400 items, often citing alt-right media reports containing conspiracy theories and false information, such as the claim that former President Barack Obama was not born in the U.S.

  • TominDC

I suffer from social anxiety, and usually have tons of sympathy for people in awkward social positions.

So I thought how awkward it would be for Cruz to be voted down by a yuuuuge margin, and how strange it would be to face the rest of his colleagues in the senate… and I can’t help but laugh and laugh and laugh.

I mean his attempt to corner Sally Yates not only backfired but it basically slapped him into cowed silence for a while. Deservedly so. He was a complete buffoon.

I don’t feel at all sorry about the agony that Sessions may go through. His policies as AG are atrocious. He was once considered too racist to be a judge and since becoming AG he has worked hard at stripping away any support for our civil rights including firing up a Reefer Madness approach to cannabis even in states where it is legal. (States’ rights anybody?) I do feel sorry for our country that we’ve come to this point.

    So he is a witch!

  • bkmn

O/T – just got back from dropping guests off at the airport and ran into a McD’s to get a beverage since my throat is getting sore and a guy ahead of me was wearing an enamel lapel pin in the outline of the US, with a red background with a gold hammer and sickle on the red field. I’m guessing a Trump supporter that thinks it would be a good thing for Putin to take over the US. Made me want to deck him but I did nothing since you never know if an asshole like that is packing a gun.

    • BobSF_94117

Uh… it’s quite a bit more likely that he was wearing that as a protest of the Russian take-over.

      • bkmn

Interesting. I had not heard or seen anything about the symbolism as a protest.

        • BobSF_94117

I mean, I could be wrong, but I can’t imagine a Trump supporter using the Soviet communist symbolism. On the other hand, they’re not the sharpest folks…

RED ALERT!!! Snopes is in danger of shutting down. They apparently don’t have control over their domain due to some contract they had with a vendor who is not honoring the end of the contract or something. Anyway, they’ve set up a gofundme because they need help with legal expenses to get control of their domain and to keep running. They provide such an important fact-checking service so consider helping them out.

What if Snopes’ story is false?

What site will we trust to debunk it?

      • i’m not really a huge fan of snopes. i’ve caught them being wrong a few times and i don’t really get why so many people rely on them; they are just another website run by amateur generalists. which is not a bad thing, but if i really want to know the truth about something, i’m much more likely to start with academic experts and/or people who are directly related to the topic in question. i am not putting them down, but just sort of reflecting on how people have accepted them as the end all of internet “research.” they can’t know everything but a lot of people seem to think they do.

        • Rob NYNY

Democrats in office need to stop thinking of their GOP counterparts as honored colleagues. Their GOP counterparts think of their Democratic fellow Senators and Representatives as enemies and giving them credit as being more than that is wrong. The GOP has shown that they are not to be trusted and they do not care about the good of the country. They are driven by being in power and care nothing about the people that elect them.

Has the White House considered naming someone with a little integrity to the position? Not that Cruz would be any worse than, say, John Mitchell (Nixon) or Edwin Meese (Reagan). By the way, Meese (still alive) is just over at the Heritage Foundation. I’m sure he’d volunteer, for the good of the country, you know.

  • bkmn

If you thought Giuliani was bad please realize that Cruz is much, much worse. And that is an understatement.

    • TonberryPi

Cruz is a monster with no soul. He’ll dance to whatever filthy tune his masters play, and we’ll all suffer for it.

    • My relatives in New York think Giuliani is a complete scumbag, even more than Christie. A total schmuck. I know he did convincing drag and had two gay roommates for a while, but the man was complete garbage.

  • He is not going to pick Cruz. Cruz hates his guts. Trump knows this. He stabbed him in the back at the convention by refusing to endorse him after being granted a convention speaking spot (much to his credit). You do not insult a Cubano’s wife by calling her ugly AND lie and say his father had a part in killing JFK (which is highly unlikely). Cruz could destroy the careers of Pence and probably Ryan — and put himself into postion in a run for the White House of 2020 couldn’t he by becoming Attorney General ? Gee, he could lay his hands on all sorts of information —- 🙂

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Trump is all about loyalty – he even made a big point of saying so today at his boy scout jamboree shitshow – getting it, expecting it, but never giving it. He knows Cruz is an ambitious schemer and would not be dependably loyal to him. And basically he’s talking about firing Sessions because he doesn’t think Sessions is sufficiently willing to take a bullet for him, when in fact almost nobody has been as loyal to him as Sessions.

    • Lazycrockett

He isn’t going to pick either Cruz or Ghoulina. I think Sessions is fine for the time being. Hes got the racist base creaming their pants with what he is doing through out the country. If Drumpf does fire him it will be during the recess but even then there is a lot of what and if and who he can appoint and from what I understand the congress still has to approve.

      • Talisman

It’s all about the distraction & drama…Keep the media & public blind to real real threats/agenda.

        • That_Looks_Delicious

Trump also enjoys humiliating people who grovel for him, as he has already shown with Spicer, Sessions, Tillerson, Christie, Giuliani, Romney and many others. He’s probably just trying to humiliate Cruz if he can.

          • Lazycrockett

Spicer wanted to see the pope. denied.
Sessions was a Scout. Jamboree denied.

Cruz is polling even with Beto O’Rouke (D) for the 2018 Senate race. If Republicans think that Cruz might lose his seat to Beto, they might WANT for him to take an administration position (AG) so that they can put someone else into the race.

McConnell can simply declare the recess a non-recess. It’s what the GOP did with Obama. The Senate never goes out of session officially.

        • DaddyRay

I could see Trump having difficulty getting a replacement for Sessions confirmed with a rather sizable number of Session friends in the Senate. They will not react very kindly to Trump throwing Sessions under the bus. A summer recess appointment may be his only option

He actually mentioned William Levitt and “Levittowns” as a shining example of… something… erm, how to make America whiter again, I guess. Grrr.

“Levittown is the name of seven large suburban developments created in the United States of America by William Levitt and his company Levitt & Sons. Built after World War II for returning veterans and their new families (though required by Federal Housing Administration (FHA) lenders to be limited to those of “the Caucasian race”, as stipulated in housing rent and sales agreements.)”

E-mail Joe about it and I’ll mention it later on today for all the non night owls but Janice Pauls of Kansas has passed away.
And for those who don’t know who she is, she was a vicious vile monster to the LGBT community in Kansas.
No nice way to put it, they are all safer today with her gone.
Say more later on but for now… good night everyone!

    • Reality.Bites

“passed away” for a “vicious vile monster?”

  • JCF

I thought, “Cruz is a floater, alright” . . . but I couldn’t bring myself to look for/upload a visual (you may thank me now).

Something I’ve always wondered about. Fireflies:

    http://earthsky.org/earth/video-synchronized-symphony-of-fireflies

Don’t see them much in the city:

    http://earthsky.org/earth/bugs-firefly-light

    • Ernest Endevor

We’re not seeing them much in the country these days, either. At least I’m not.

      • i know, right? it’s very weird and scary. when i was Blake’s age they still lit up the night sky. today, it’s a rare treat to have more than a dozen in the yard. and i have a big yard.

      • TuuxKabin

Only in very hot, post heavy rains, in Columbia County, but that was 15 years ago. We used to see them in Riverside Park, but haven’t been there much in the evenings anymore, even with the terrace restaurant opposite the dog run.

      • TuuxKabin
    • Boreal

Had lots of them this year. The most in about a decade.

    • AJ Drew

oh, we had plenty here! (Someone, I think it was Safari, posted a great video showing fireflies in abundant numbers as well.)

    • David Milley

We have lots of them in our yard. Kitten out back tries to hunt them, but he’s too little and too enthusiastic to actually catch any.

      • TuuxKabin

Your in a rural location? Riverside Park the length of it along the Hudson used to be a glow with them.

Kittens. Oh for the life of a kitten. Or a bear.

        • David Milley

No such luck. Warren was raised rural, but the city has crept up around him. We have our two-thirds of an acre spread in the middle of suburbia (durned glad to have it, too). But it’s a long, skinny lot, and Warren has it covered in garden and jungle — the ladies at the tax office call our place “the farm” — so the back end of our yard is paradise for cats. Boo-Boo has presided over the kingdom by the beehives since Sweetie Pie passed away, but he’s graciously allowing the kitten to apprentice for the position of barn cat.

Yeah, our cats have staff. When we had more cats indoors, Warren nailed cedar planks to all the furniture where they started scratching, to make it easier for them to sharpen their claws. When one of ’em got too big to perch comfortably on the window sill at the top of the stairs, Warren built it out with a shelf.

Only thing better than the life of a kitten or a bear is a life with kittens and a bear.

      • The_Wretched

He’ll stop once he does. Apparently they taste terrible.

        • David Milley

          (evil grin) Yep, I know.

  • blackstar

you know before all this is said and done it would not surprise me if he actually burned down the White House .

      Reichstag

    • Karl Dubhe

After his ‘term’ in office, I’d not be surprised if the next president ordered the building to be burnt.

      I know they wouldn’t, but…

  • Halou

    That’s crazy!
Appointing the son of one of the JFK assassination co-conspirators to the highest legal office in the land. What is Trump thinking?!

  • Leo

OT. Any suspicions Trump’s heading for Mueller should be shot with the Sessions tweetstorm this morning including the Ukrainian helped Hill talking point.

  • JCF

Oh God, now Drumpf is outright attacking Sessions via Tweet now. The very first Senator who endorsed him. I just can’t . . .

Goya, show us what Drumpf is doing to Sessions—what Drumpf is doing to the country.

      Sure, why not?

And since I just posted something horrifying (below)…

Tonight I went to the California State Fair again. My friend and I went on the chairlift ride. It was late afternoon. A few minutes after the ride started, it got stuck. And we waited. And waited. And waited. And day to turned to dusk. When it finally got going again, the ride climbed over the horizon, and we saw the New Crescent Moon setting—looking just like this (not our pic—and no ocean):

    http://wwwcdn.skyandtelescope.com/wp-content/uploads/crescentmoon_youssef_m.jpg

It was breathtaking. And if the ride hadn’t stopped for ~25 minutes, we never would have seen this! Unexpected blessing/bliss: it still happens. Hope!

    • damn, man. you have some Talent. beautiful!

      • JCF

Maybe you missed that I didn’t take this pic (it’s not even the same landscape). It was just the *closest* pic I could find (via the Google), of the crescent moon/sky I saw. Truthfully, I would say the moon/sky were even MORE beautiful than this pic conveys! [If only my friend or I had had a camera capable of capturing it, at that moment on the ride. But that’s what memories are for. :-)]

  • kareemachan

You gotta admit that donnie is batting a thousand when it comes to shitty picks for these different positions. It’s like he has a talent to sniff out shitty people…

    • LesbianTippingHabits

Only shitty people might consider serving in the Trump Administration.

  • Ginger Snap

I just voted in our special election in NH for congressman. The polling station was deserted I was the only one there voting it kinda scares me usually it’s quite busy this early.

    • i know you voted the right way, and fewer people voting means your vote is even more valuable. let’s hope only people like you bother to vote today. lots of idiot thugs don’t even know about most special elections. and that’s a good thing.

      • LesbianTippingHabits

Yes, in special elections, it’s all about turnout. So we’ll see.

      • Ginger Snap

I was just shocked as early morning voting with odd year or special elections is usually very busy. We did have lots of rain yesterday and it was wet this morning do maybe everyone was getting a late start.

  • Joseph Miceli

“White House Floats Ted Cruz For Attorney General”
    Guess what else floats?

  • SoCalGal20

So just this morning in hos tweets Donnie Two Scoops has attacked Sessions, Hillary, McCabe, and Congressional Rs. Snd namechecked Hannity.

    • Ninja0980

And yet Republicans will continue to do nothing.
One has to wonder what damning info folks have about Pence for them to not move against Trump.

      • bambinoitaliano

Most of them committed the same crime of collusion by 6 degree of separation. Putin might not have Russian pee tapes on them, he could possessed other evidence that are just as damning to these corrupted Congress. The silence from them so far is the most telling sign of that.

  • bambinoitaliano

What does it matter who the shit gibbon appoint to AG? He just needed someone to fire Mueller and put a kibosh on his treason investigation. Whoever replace Session that can put an end to Mueller investigation rest assure he will be able to erode the justice system on behalf of the shit gibbon and his administration. That will spell the end of US democracy.

  • hey yalll, don’t forget to call or email or website comment your senators’ offices today. do it before noon. be the flying monkey brigade on this one. it probably won’t make any difference, but the fact is a lot of them are Cowards. put the fear of the FSM into them and let them know how much free time and money you’ll find you have come election time, if they vote the wrong way.

i’m headed over to my shitheels’ sites right now.

    • The_Wretched

thank you for reminding, I’ll make my calls now.

  • GeneInSJ

Cruz is WAY too partisan. I would hope he would not stand a chance.

  • LesbianTippingHabits

Ted Cruz is a wimp. As Solicitor General of Texas in 2002-2003, Ted Cruz ducked the chance to argue Lawrence v. Texas before the Supreme Court.

Good for us. First Lawrence (2003), then Windsor (2013), then Obergefell (2015).

All of that said, if Ted Cruz really had the courage of his convictions, he would have defended the Texas statute where it counted – before the Supreme Court.

And nobody has asked him why he wimped out. But we know the truth.

    Thank you.

  • Jim Gallagher-Barker

So basically, Trump is floating Cruz. Is it wrong to hope it’s face down in the Potomac?

  • andrew

As AG Ted Cruz could have the Justice Department open up a cold case investigation into his fathers involvement in the JFK assassination. LOL.

  • wmforr

Yes, yes, yes! Anything to get him out of the Senate! As AG he can investigate his father’s role in the Kennedy assassination.

  • Len Ricci

Like there aren’t enough DICKHEADS in the white house… we need one fricken more.
