Satanic Temple: Probably Half Our Members Are LGBT

From a Vice profile on the Satanic Temple:

There’s still ample confusion about what it means to be a Satanist. Given society’s long history of pegging Satan as the root of all evil, that’s fair—though it’s worth making some distinctions. Anton LaVey, a then 36-year-old American musician, founded the Church of Satan in 1966 with the mission of creating an organization “openly dedicated to the acceptance of Man’s true nature—that of a carnal beast, living in a cosmos that is indifferent to our existence.” The Satanic Temple, on the other hand, was created by Lucien Greaves (aka Doug Mesner) and Malcolm Jarry in 2014 to promote humanistic principles of benevolence and empathy.

Greaves is surprised I find the Temple’s queerness, well, surprising. “It’s not a big deal,” he said. “We don’t have strict separations or definitions of our gay membership, our trans membership, or anybody else.” Though he doesn’t have an exact headcount of LGBTQ members, Greaves said he wouldn’t be surprised if more than half identify as such (an estimate that conforms with my experience at the LA chapter). The organization as a whole is a platform for LGBTQ members to celebrate their identities.

As you’d expect, right wing sites are ALL over this today and none of them appear aware that the Satanic Temple is essentially an atheist trolling outfit and that they openly say that Satan doesn’t exist. Or maybe they ARE aware, but would rather rile up the idiots.

  • kcken

Well, considering that most church/groups would still rather BURN US ALIVE then let us attend church as equals, LETS GO TEAM SATAN!

  • Lazycrockett

“Pegging Satan” sounds like a fun friday night.

    • Mark

I do have a little of the devil in me — er, uh, well…..

Megyn Kelly tried to interview Lucien Greaves once. He took the opportunity to put in a milky-white contact lens and troll her if I recall. Not a hard troll, just a gentle troll.

Points for the art. That unveiling was handled with some subterfuge to dodge xtian protestors as well. it’s a bit of an interesting story.

      • safari

The Satanic Temple membership in Detroit also put on baby masks and their finest leather to join anti-choice protestors who were at first excited by the baby-folk until they started spraying milk on each other whilst others were rolling on the ground crying or chanting accompanied by light flogging.

My experience with them put the “we blow” into “Webelos”

          • That_Looks_Delicious

Ha! Sounds like mine. I made a sculpture of the Sphinx out of balsa wood, and we did something or other involving compasses and maps that I don’t remember very well. I remember thinking that it was a big waste of time.

          • David Walker

We were doing some godforsaken thing having to do with measuring things you can’t physically measure. One of the things was to measure a telephone pole some specific way. The scoutmaster noticed I’d finished and asked me how high it was. “30 feet.” He looked astonished because he hadn’t seen me go through the rigamarole of measuring. How did I figure that out? “Telephone poles are 30 feet tall. Everybody knows that.” I would guess the scoutmaster hated me about as much as I hated him.

      Rude
      Cruel

        • Mike

When I was young scout, we used to say “On my honor I will do my best, to help the girl scouts get undressed.” With the churchy takeover of Boy Scouts we hear about, that Trumpish ethic may catch on for real.

Trump’s speech felt like a Nazi rally. He’s such a horrible human being.

    • Carl

Boy Scouts have a dark streak running through their history. My dad read this news and it reminded him of his time in the scouts when they dressed him and the other boys in black face.

      • Tom Mears

In the early 70s, we had one of the older boys, a guy about 17-18 at the time, openly in the KKK, white robes and everything. He was later convicted of molesting his neighbor’s kids.

…And yes he did diddle the scouts as well–although I was too naive at the time to realize that was what it was. It wasn’t overtly sexual. During camping trips, he, in his Klan robes, would secretly single out one kid to parade around naked in the middle of the night, blindfolded. Cold showers or dunks in the river were also involved. The adults must have known about it but everyone treated it as hazing. 20:20 hindsight says he was probably whacking off the whole time, but I didn’t notice it.

The irony was I was already sexually active with another scout my age. He was good looking and wouldn’t have had to ask twice if he really tried something sexual.

    • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly
    • Richard B

I just watched the boy scout speech and felt ill. The republicans hated President Obama’s tenure and I brushed it off that the south didn’t like a smart black guy in charge, but I don’t think the intensity was there like I hate this disgusting Russian coup d’état that installed a loathsome criminal that brainwashed almost half the country to accept pond scum level behavior.

  • safari

Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals (which is actually just a set of helpful guidelines for protesting effectively and not communist plots to take over the US) is dedicated to Lucifer as well. Well seeing God is used as the excuse to condemn homosexuality, well when you take out that aspect people can be honest about it and, yes, about 80% of people are bisexual to some extent so I can see why half would identify as LGBT since that is pretty much in line with reality.

Go check out all the gay boy “devil worship” images and videos on Tumblr. There is a significant nexus between gay, using crystal, slamming and unsafe sex. Lots of accounts with 666 in the user name along these lines too.

Fortunately, there is a real world outside Tumblr. The Satanic Temple is a good deal more sophisticated and has loftier goals than fanboy contrarian satanism.

Are you unaware that the Satanic Temple is an atheist organization whose primary focus is stopping christianists from taking political power, by contesting whenever christers insist on their religion being promoted.

Whenever christers try to put up a religious monument on government property, the Satanic Temple sue for equal “air time”. They are doing good by sabotaging the American Christiban’s attempts to impose their narrow religious beliefs.

SoCalGal20 pointed out something I did not initially notice and, as such, I am deleting the tweet accordingly. It turns out, as noted by SoCalGal20, that tweet attributed to the Mooch was not a verified account.

That said, I stand by my initial remarks about him being a piece of shit.

Thank you SoCalGal for bringing this to my attention.

The boy scouts story is getting bigger by the hour. Number 2 trending topic on US twitter. FURIOUS parents, former scouts, donors, etc.

If you are so inclined, here is a number you can call:

Boy Scouts of America's PR line is 972-580-2263, all former Scouts can call and demand a statement condemning that speech! #BoyScoutJamboree— (((Sam Swire))) (@Sam_Swire) July 25, 2017

    • Karl Dubhe

Would that include foreign boy scouts?

I was a lucky cub scout, my den leader was a thief; not a molester.

Um, w/ the “Death to Rainbow Capitalism!”: these are (similar to) those blockading Pride last month. As often w/ self-styled “Revolutionaries”, they can’t tell bigoted 1% Forest (see re Mercers, above!), from the merely “Look, this Queer received a small dividend check” trees.

That said: “The Queer Insurrection and Liberation Army” (TQILA). Heh, please tell me they pronounce it…

Guys. I am pretty sure the Scaramucci account y’all are tweeting is a parody or imposter account. It’s four days old. Anthony Scaramucci has a verified account @Scaramucci.

Ok, seriously? What could an average charity could do with this money. From Wikipedia: “In April 2016, Scaramucci was one of three New York Mets fans who teamed up to buy Mike Piazza’s jersey from the September 21, 2001 game against the Atlanta Braves, the first professional baseball game played in New York following the 9/11 attacks, whose home run win helped lift the city after the tragedy. The jersey was purchased in a private auction for $365,000, the highest price ever paid for a modern-day jersey. The purchase enabled the jersey to be publicly displayed on a rotating basis among the 9/11 Memorial Museum, Citi Field, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame.” Ok, ya I’m not a rabid sports fan and don’t really get it, but why the fuck didn’t the player just donate it if it meant that much?

  • Why couldn’t they call themselves anything else? The Satanic Panic is alive and well among older exurban and rural Christians. And like we gays don’t have enough to deal with these days. Tying us to Satanism. FML

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think they do it because it’s harder to deny religious standing since it’s based on a figure from Christianity. I think trying to use Jedi or something like that would make it harder for their group to troll Christmas displays on government property.

      • Tor

True. Satan is a sort of deity to them. But so is Jezebel. Church of the Jezebelian has a nice ring.

Religious people believe in Satan. It’s pure superstition, but it’s somebody else to blame other than oneself.

    • JohnMyroro

How is that? And just what is our cause? Hoping religious people like us?

      • bmoore4026

Religious people already think we’re demons. We don’t need to add fuel to their fires.

        • Gregory In Seattle

If that is true, then why should some people not embrace that assumption?

The gay rights movement did not begin with Stonewall: it started 20 years earlier. Protests then involved dressing very nicely, in church clothes, and peacefully picketing with signs along the lines of, “We’re people too, please don’t hurt us.” It wasn’t until some queens got pissed off at Stonewall that things began to change, and we went from carrying signs to throwing bricks.

Sometimes, the most effective way to protest is to become that which your opponents fear most.

  • andrew

I’m happy to read that they don’t believe that Satan exists, but why did they not take the name of a mythological hero for their organization rather than the name of a mythological villain?

    • Gregory In Seattle

Historically, organized Satanism has tended to celebrate Satan as an opponent of despots and champion of freedom. Heroes of this class are always painted as villains by the despot being opposed, but that does not necessarily make them villains.

      • andrew

In the minds of 99% of people, whether they believe Satan to be real or mythological, he is the supreme villain.
