PENNSYLVANIA: Allentown Bans Ex-Gay Torture

Lehigh Valley Live reports:

With the mayor’s stroke of a pen, Allentown has officially banned conversion therapy for minors in the city. The law prohibits licensed mental health professionals from counseling, practices, or treatments that seek to change a minor’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Officials said Allentown is now the second municipality in the state, and 60th in the country, to ban the practice. City council unanimously passed the ordinance Wednesday night, and the legislation was signed Thursday afternoon at the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center, 522 W. Maple St.

Allentown gets a mention in Mame and The Thin Man and I believe a few other shows/movies.

    • AH you beat me too it! I saw your post after I posted mine with Jerry Orbach! I am not the only one who loves 42nd Street. Do you also burst into “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” whenever anyone mentions the upstate New York Metropolis?

      • David Walker

        Don’t everybody?

That such a law needs to be passed in the first place…tragic doesn’t begin to describe it.

  • another_steve

In my heart is a special place for Pennsylvania.

My folks owned a farm in Granville Summit in Bradford County, near Troy – not far from Elmira NY. My dad was a country boy at heart, and although I was born and raised in New York City, he remained a country boy for his whole life.

Much love to my Pennsylvania brethren reading here.

    • Do you have any old photos you can post? Here are some of my ancestors in South Jersey circa 1905. I am also New York City but with some rural roots. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/95ebc3ce8a33ff30e9658368d839bc19dd6fca3a22ff20662bdc6f095c032643.jpg

      • another_steve

Wonderful that you have those photos, Eddi. I’ll have to look and see what I have.

Btw, my husband has New Jersey roots.

The Jersey shore. Asbury Park, where Bruce Springsteen got his start.

        • This is very South Jersey, in Cumberland County. They were farmers starting in the late 1800’s. I still have relatives there but they are no longer farmers :).

          • another_steve

I am so New York culturally Jewish, it’s ridiculous. lol

My paternal grandparents owned a bungalow colony (does that concept still exist?) in…you guessed it…the Catskills. We spent our summers there. Our winters in NYC and our summers in the Catskills.

Dad was a country boy at heart and mom was a NYC sophisticate – very tuned into the New York cultural scene. Mom worked with Kitty Carlisle Hart when Kitty headed up the New York State Council on the Arts.

            Such fun, reminiscing.

          • LOL i found another photo of me as a baby (I am the little guy) in a Catskills bungalow colony the other day. I can’t believe I am posting this here.
            https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c7ba5b24ee32ecfe98bce164963c604241faee180b2e818809868eb9c42b883a.jpg

            Ohmigod LOVE THAT!!!

          • Reality.Bites

Gosh, I think you should caption that one with “We were on vacation. This is not where and how we live.” πŸ˜‰

          • There is a very amusing anecdote about Kitty Carlisle, who was from a prominent Jewish Louisiana family, up on Wiki — I actually read it in her bio. “Her mother, Hortense Holtzman Conn, was a woman obsessed with breaking into the prevailing Gentile society. She once reportedly told a taxi driver who asked if her daughter was Jewish, “She may be, but I’m not”.”

          • another_steve

Oh boyfriend, I could tell stories about Kitty. Mom would come home from work and share with me everything. Kitty confided in her. Mom knew I was interested in such things.

Interestingly, my family connections also extend to Bess Myerson, who in 1945 became the first (and only) Jewish Miss America.

My paternal grandparents knew her parents.

            https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/108bb650a9c4d7883c6281be4d64a36b42d5dcee680004261686e171155598f9.jpg

          • fuzzybits

That’s funny because we used to have a cat named Carlisle. Every time someone asked who that was I’d say,”oh,that’s Kitty Carlisle.

          • another_steve

            Lol. That’s funny. πŸ˜‰

Women of Kitty’s and my mother’s generation shared stories as they “fixed themselves up” at the women’s room mirror every hour on the hour. That’s where Kitty Carlisle confided the most to my mom.

            Juicy stuff. Scandalous stuff.

Maybe someday I’ll publish my memoirs.

          • Paul

Please do! The chapters on MY FAIR LADY and CAMELOT alone would be worth reading.

      • Reality.Bites

My grandparents were all born between about 1904 and 1907. It’s amazing to think that my grandmother, who could set up a VCR and a closed caption decoder, was born into this world.

Interesting factoid: my grandmother was, although lacking in formal education, an extremely well-read and informed woman. She was in her 40s before she even HEARD of homosexuality.

And voted for one in her 70s.

        • Nychta

          Hooray for your grandma!

My grandmother was one of my greatest inspirations as I was growing up. During the Depression her husband killed himself and left her on her own with seven kids, the oldest of which was 12. Yet she survived, and survived well. One of my favorite memories is her reading out loud Poe’s “The Bells”, with all sorts of expressive intonation.

          • Reality.Bites

What a rough life! You know, my parents were born in 1931 and 1933, so they could have some memories of the Depression. They’d have been better off than most. Her father was a dentist and his owned a hardware store. At the same time, of course, money to pay for such things was scarce

          • Nychta

My dad was the 12-year-old, born in 1924. I don’t know exactly how grandma survived, but I think my dad had something to do with it. He dropped out of school and went to work as a hotel bell boy to help support the family.

Grandma once told me the story of a dry goods peddler who, one bitter cold winter day during the Depression, dropped a pair of women’s hose in the street and left them there. They were frozen to the ground, but that didn’t stop one of Grandma’s neighbors from boiling a pot of water, pouring it over the hose, and freeing them from the ice.

I’m a NW Pennsylvania boy ~ born and raised in Forest and Warren Counties ~ miss the trees, the monstrous boulders and the Allegheny National Forest, but not the people.

      • another_steve

I dunno, the people my husband and I encountered in Bradford County were gracious and lovely. (That said, we never spoke politics with them.)

I’m out of the closet 24/7 whether I intend it or not (trust me).

Never was a Bradford County eyelash fluttered in my presence.

    That map… Depressing af.

    • iambu

I know. I still felt a little twinge of superiority seeing that I live in one of the fully blue states, though.

      • leastyebejudged

I live in one of those states as well but I always cringe, we could loose everything so fast.

        • iambu

You’re not wrong. We gotta stay on top of it for sure. No kid (I mean, no ANYbody) should have to go through that bullshit.

  • Sporkfighter

I’m surprised a municipality has the authority to ban a “medical” of “psychological” service. This is something that should have been done at the state level years ago.

    • Jerry Kott

I really don’t know how much authority these bans have. The Power of them will be shown in the enforcement.

      • Reality.Bites

I think they’re more symbolic than anything. Realistically, what are the chances that in this city of 120,443 people there even IS anyone conducting this form of quackery?

Could there be enough of a market for even one person to make a living at it? I don’t know if there is anyone doing it who does anything else. Certainly the ones with a public profile do nothing else. Indeed, their reputations are such that it’s unimaginable anyone would see them for any other reason.. But I have no idea if there are people who do this and, say, marriage counselling.

        • Jerry Kott

          So it is symbolic?

          • Reality.Bites

That would be my suspicion, but I don’t live there and know what kind of people live there. And I really have no idea how common this quackery is in the first place.

I know that some here have experienced it, but I think most of us haven’t. And we’re an older group on the whole, with few or any who were recently minors under parental control.

          • Jerry Kott

I see these ordinances popping up and have tried to see if they have any teeth and I can’t get answers . Pennsylvania is not exactly the hot bed of progressiveness and I just wonder if window dressing and symbolism does anything.

Allentown is in the midst of a Federal investigation with Mayor Ed Pawlowski in the cross hairs and several city officials have already accepted pleas. I believe this is just window dressing pandering for the LGBT votes since his name is on the ballot for the next election for Mayor.

    • Whenever I hear “Allentown” I think of the opening of the “Lullaby of Broadway” from 42nd Street — and here is a clip sung by the great Jerry Orbach from the 81 Tonys. What was that word you just said — Allentown???? https://youtu.be/75nxUgNabH8

    • Reality.Bites

I’m with Eddi – I just want to know if the report would make me more or less likely to eat there, from the vantage point of an ordinary human who doesn’t want to get sick or die.

With all due respect to free enterprise, I can’t believe that that chain is still in business. There seems to be a health-related scandal there every week.

I think her presidency would have been a continuation of the Obama presidency. He’s black, she’s female. People who hate black people almost always hate women, so that would have been a washout.

In a Clinton administration, there would have been slow but steady progress. As in the Obama years. No miracles. Just slow and steady progress.

      Water under the bridge now.

OT: job layoffs are growing daily.

    • The economy cannot grow indefinitely without some contraction. It is pretty much a law of a free market. We have been remarkably recession free because the Great Recession took so much out of the economy, but a correction is coming — and even a very minor slow growth period is going to slam Trump. He cannot keep on banking on the Obama economy and claim credit for it.

I can guarantee you NONE of these traitorous bastards (Ivanka, Kellyanne, etc would be traitorous bitches) will EVER go to jail.

The administration might come crashing down and they’ll all be out of office but he’s totally not going to let anyone go to jail.
