DENVER: Hundreds Protest Education Sec. Betsy DeVos Ahead Of Speech To Far-Right Legislative Lobby Group

The Denver Post reports:

Hundreds of people gathered at the Colorado statehouse Wednesday morning in protest of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and her Denver speech Thursday at the annual meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council.

“This needs to make a statement,” said Suzanne Ethredge, president of the Pueblo Education Association, a teachers union. Ethredge drove up from Pueblo with a group of about a dozen educators to join in the protest.

“My biggest fear is (DeVos) is going to destroy the public education system completely,” she said. University of Denver doctoral student Alicia Mountain said she joined in the rally to ensure DeVos doesn’t dismantle Title IX for sexual assault victims.

Critics say both DeVos and the American Legislative Exchange Council — known as ALEC — support the privatization of public schools. Thousands of GOP lawmakers, thinkers and lobbyists will be in the Mile High City this week for the conservative gathering.

    Thank you Denver.

  • pj

my sister has spent her life in education and did very well. she is well spoken and reserved. however when betsy devos comes up my sister turns into a crazy person and the china starts flying.

    • Cuberly

      I don’t blame her.

  • Rex

I trust all the signs and banners are grammatically correct with no spelling errors.

    • jmax

I’ve known teachers who were terrible spellers. I have a friend (no longer teaching) who couldn’t assemble a coherent, correctly-spelled email if you paid him.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

Devos: It is wonderful that so many people have turned out to protect our public schools from prowling grizzly bears.

  • Ninja0980

Protests are nice but until our side shows up at the ballot box, this means nothing.

  • kouros

ALEC, which wants to repeal the Seventeenth Amendment so we can return to pay-for-play Senate seats. What could possibly be wrong with their involvement in public education?

    • Kruhn

Of course, because they can gerrymander state legislatures in such a way to ensure a GOP eternal Senate majority.

What’s with the large hoops? Is “Black Lives Matter” her next stomping ground?

      • Paula

I used to wear large hoop earrings, mostly, to piss off my mother.
        I am caring like that.

        • Ken M

          and did it work?

          • Paula

            Oh, yes!

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Well now, could it be that reality is finally sinking in for little Caitlyn? Is she beginning to clue into the fact that she has lived a very privileged and sheltered life and is now seeing what really goes on when you fuck with the LGB and most notably, the T’s and how pissy we can get? You’re just getting a taste sweets….

    • Kruhn

I’m going to be the discordant voice on the Caitlin Jenner controversy, but I was listening a couple of days ago on an LGBT web radio show on Progressive Voices network to a conference she gave to The Commonwealth Club in California. Caitlin told a story of how she stopped a young trans kid from killing himself. Caitlin became the kid’s mentor. If she stuck to this role, Caitlin Jenner could still be a force for good.

      • CJAS

She could be. But she has a lot to unlearn and little in her history to suggest she’s willing to.

The far far far right ,with their added libertarian bent, wanting to divide educational opportunities into silos of access. Looking to further marginalize us into various social, racial & economic ghettos.

Probably the most insidious item on the GOP agenda.

  • Rex

Trump doesn’t understand the value of a good education. Obviously.

    • Beagle

Look how far it got without one.

  • Ken M

Every time I see American in the names of these various groups, my stomach turns.

  • Rebecca Gardner
    • Cuberly

Gee, can’t imagine the militant far right trump-fluffer hate groups like Sovereign Citizens is gonna like this.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

Perhaps they’ll respond as they usually do to such things and solve the problem of 45 for everyone. Just noting their tendencies, nothing more 😉

      • The_Wretched

Sovereign Citizen types like it just fine as it legitimizes their theft of assets.

        • Cuberly

Not sure sure they’d want private assets, they most certainly want to take public assets, lands, resource rights etc…

          • The_Wretched

My wife did some legal work on behalf of defrauded car and land holders. The Sovereign Citizens make this bizarre distinction between them as persons and them as legal entities. They then buy cars and homes and not pay. When the vendors come for the assets, the SC defend ‘gee that was the legal fiction I didn’t ask for and it’s not me as a person so I keep the stuff and you go away’. It doesn’t work legally and the sheriffs show up armed to do the evictions / repossessions.

If the state steals stuff (pardon me, seizes assets), it deligitimizes the State’s role in taking their ill gotten stuff and the State stealing legitimizes them stealing.

          • Cuberly

            Wow!

          • -M-

JJ Macnab covers antigovernment extremism including Sovereign Citizen groups on twitter and at forbes.com.

          • Cuberly

I follow her on twitter and some of the things she reports are amazing. In a disturbing way.

          • -M-

            Yes. 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳

    • The_Wretched

Obama and Holder were working against asset forfeiture. It’s total bs and leads to very corrupt police departments.

    • Dazzer

How very Bolshevik of Jeff Sessions.

  • another_steve

I am sending Betsy DeVos the Evil Eye. Among Jews (and Italian Catholics, I believe) the sending of the Evil Eye is a terrible curse. Very terrible.

    Okay. Here goes…

    • jmax

And a lovely Evil Eye it is.

    • Snarkaholic

What do we send to ensure several yuuuuge hernias…a Prada bag with an anvil inside?

      • another_steve

We must be careful with the hernia curse. It’s extremely potent.

I recall that my maternal grandmother wished it on her landlord once. She had complained to him that there wasn’t enough heat in the apartment. This was January in New York City. It gets very cold in January in New York City.

A week later, the landlord was in bed.

Incapacitated with what very well may have been a hernia.

OT: “BUSTED: Affair between California Assembly Republican leaders revealed by white nationalist”

    http://www.rawstory.com/2017/07/busted-affair-between-california-assembly-republican-leaders-revealed-by-white-nationalist/

My favorite part of the article is where they note the adulterous state rep is a graduate of Liberty University.

    • djcoastermark

      Oh those wacky repubbles.

    • Ninja0980

      Lmao, just love family values.

      • Cuberly

        Heh, Liberty U fail….

        • bkmn

Really makes you wonder how they got accredited.

          • Cuberly

I remember reading somewhere that the vast majority of Liberty U students are online only. Never having to set foot on campus & also allowing it to be accessible anywhere in the US.

  • bkmn

Can Betsy spell ‘Trump’ correctly? Doubt it.

  • The_Wretched

ALEC – she’s at an ALEC event. They are right wing assholes who create ‘model bills’ for republicans to pass at the State level. Know those anti-worker, anti-women, anti-gay, pro-gun and other legislation that shows up in like 20+ States all on the same topics? It’s not an accident, it’s ALEC. They have industry lobbiest write bills, hold junkets in nice places, give a free vacation to the lawmakers, the lawmakers then work to pass the bills that are handed to them.

The Sec. of Education does not belong anywhere near an ALEC event. It’s deeply troubling that she showed up.

    • KnownDonorDad

Deeply troubling, and completely in character.

      • prixator

Money can buy almost anything! That is most likely her guiding philosophy.

    • Dazzer

At least we know it’s not a Smart Alec event

  • Mark

The dumbing down of this country has been happening for a long time. It’s got to stop if things are going to change.

    • whollyfool

The best quote I saw after the election was “Now will you invest in education? “

      • prixator

Who would that be directed at? Dumpty isn’t the only Republican that loves the poorly educated – they’re counting on it!

        • whollyfool

Pretty sure the guy meant that it was lack of education that brought us to the result of the 2016 election….

  • andrew

GOP stands for Gang Of Privatizers. They want government to fail so that as many things as possible can be privatized, which will mean more money for their rich friends and lower quality services and higher costs for average Americans.

  • AdamTh

Privatize the public schools….. Can you imagine how many student/parent fees that can generate for the new owners?

    • Kruhn

More like the ability to dump all poor, black, and brown kids into shitty schools, thus overturning Brown v. Board of Education.

  • ByronK

Things seem to be going well for Betsy.

  • JCF
    • MaryJOGrady

      We will persist!
