Right Wing Watch Files FOIA Demand For Transcript Of Remarks AG Jeff Sessions Made To Hate Group

Miranda Blue reports at Right Wing Watch:

On Tuesday night, Attorney General Jeff Sessions delivered a speech to a “Summit on Religious Liberty” hosted by Alliance Defending Freedom, the behemoth Religious Right group that has led the fight to redefine religious liberty protections in an effort to make it easier to discriminate against LGBTQ people and others. Sessions’ speech was closed to the press and both the Justice Department and ADF are refusing to provide a transcript of his remarks to the public.

As Peter wrote on Tuesday: “The Alliance Defending Freedom is the largest of the Religious Right legal groups, engaging in culture war battles against LGBTQ equality and reproductive choice in the U.S. and increasingly around the globe. So why would the address of the attorney general to ADF, a group not normally shy about taking credit for its work, be closed to the media?”

In an attempt to answer that question, we’ve submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the Justice Department seeking a transcript of Sessions’ speech and other information about his participation in the ADF event.

    • clay

Yep, The Federalist published it under Secessions’ own byline.

Jefferson (Davis, General) Beauregard completely ignores the many times that government in the US has violated the religious protection clause against religious minorities in the US. He also says it’s reasonable for people to be afraid of being persecuted (for being fundamentalist, and probably Protestant, Christian) but doesn’t give a legal example, only free speech example, by an elite Harvard academic.

    • Karl Dubhe
    • Karl Dubhe

So, to quote part of the speech.

“Our founders, at least the most articulate of them, believed our
government existed as a protector of religious rights of Americans that
were essential to being a created human being.”

      Is that right?

On edit, it sounded as if the atheists were excluded from having a right to a religious conscience. Or protections.

They oppose marriage equality, civil unions/domestic partnerships and fight to gut any law that protects LGBT people from discrimination.
That is a hate group every way you look at it.

DOJ Won’t Release Sessions’ Contacts With Russians

“In defiance of a court order, the Justice Department is refusing to release part of a security form dealing with Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ contacts with the Russian government,” NPR reports.

    https://politicalwire.com/2017/07/13/doj-wont-release-sessions-contacts-russians/

The GOP are aiding and abetting these traitors.

At this very moment, instead of launching massive and relentless protests to stop them, Americans are permitting an illegitimate regime and its party’s majorities in Congress, after their collusion with Russia to subvert democratic elections, to subvert the rule of law.

Future elections will not be secure.

The same thing that happened in 2016 will happen again and again.

Americans have to decide just how long they’re going to accept stolen elections and a party of traitorous gangsters in government–at the moment, controlling a totally illegitimate government.

A successful coup is underway, and no one is stopping it.

Americans should be in the streets NOW, with massive and relentless protests. (It is FOLLY to wait for Mueller while so much DAMAGE is being done!)

We must DEMAND the traitor’s tax returns and SECURE elections (a return to paper ballots or at least a paper trail for every vote cast).

    • -M-

He’s so awfully proud of learning something new.

Personally my sense of word meanings tells me that in that term “opposition” is probably used more in terms of the research being opposed to the target than just being regarding an opponent.

      • ByronK

Like he’s capable of making those kinds of differentiations.

    • billbear1961

It MADDENS me the way there is so little PUSH BACK against his LIES and distortions!

Soliciting contributions from foreign citizens to U.S. political campaigns is a crime and that includes contributions in kind, and not just cash. Campaigns frequently hire outside investigators to do oppo research and pay them well for their work, so giving a campaign free oppo research isn’t so different from giving them money to buy oppo research. Trump, Jr., attended the meeting with the clear expectation of getting oppo research for free, so his planning a meeting to get an illegal in-kind contribution could be construed as a conspiracy to commit a crime. That Veselnitskaya didn’t deliver the goods doesn’t matter. Conspiracy to commit a crime is a crime, even if the plan fails. If you conspire with others to rob a bank or blow up a plane, but fail to pull it off, the conspiracy is still a crime.

      http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2017/Senate/Maps/Jul12.html#item-1

    • -M-

This excuse is coming from the same person who accused President Obama of having British intelligence spy on him. If it’s okay for his campaign to accept oppo from the Russians, then what would have been wrong with the Democrats asking GCHQ for dirt on his campaign?

      • AJ Drew

“Do unto others…” oh wait. Heh.

Also someone on twitter pointed out that Jr’s emails prove all their dismissals of Russian interference were lies. They change their stories all the time and are allowed to squirm out of any OUTRAGE!

I’m really beginning to DESPISE this country–its failing institutions–the way they just LET the right WALK ALL OVER THIS REPUBLIC!!

They’re LETTING the rightists DESTROY this democracy!!

There is not ONE strong voice in a position of power–not ONE elected voice of real stature–raised–loud, proud and defiant–against the ongoing coup and in defense of this democracy–NOT ONE! (What does that SAY about the political classes in this benighted country?!)

And there are no large and sustained protests in the streets over a STOLEN election, an election process which REMAINS open to hacking, and to DEMAND the TAX RETURNS hidden by a thief and TRAITOR who is undermining the RULE OF LAW!!

What is WRONG with this country?!

Have the people no self-respect, at ALL?!

It can’t wait for Mueller–too much DAMAGE is being done NOW!! And it sure as HELL can’t wait until 2018 and another fucking FARCE of a HACKED ELECTION!!

We have a RIGHT to SEE that traitorous bastard’s TAX RETURNS–CHRIST, it is TRULY a VITAL and OBVIOUS issue of national SECURITY!!

    • billbear1961

So, he now ADMITS knowledge of an attempt by his campaign, at the highest levels, to COLLUDE with a hostile foreign power to subvert the democratic elections of this republic, and he did NOTHING to stop it!!

That traitorous son of BITCH needs to be REMOVED from power!!

      He belongs in PRISON!!

    • billbear1961

Pence is refusing to say, through a spokesman, if HE has had any contacts with operatives of the Russian government!!

Bkmn, we need massive and relentless protests in the streets–NOW!!

and did he get paid for that appearance, in one way or another? Hmm.

  • safari

O/T: Woah. I’m listening to the NPR political roundup for the week. I just learned that “adoptions” as Jr said was the purpose of the Russian meeting, is actually a polite way of discussing Russian sanctions… since Russia restricted adoptions to the US after sanctions were placed on Russia. I didn’t know that and that’s a huge red flag.

    • Lazycrockett

      The Magnitsky Act.

    • -M-

Yes, sanctions targeted against individual oligarchs in response to Putin’s political murders. And the lawyer Jr met, she’s the Russians point person in fighting to get the Magnitsky Act overturned or repealed. Lawsuits, lobbying, public opinion.

      • -M-

Talking with her about Russia’s ban on international adoptions is talking about getting the sanctions against Putin’s friends dropped.

    • Cuberly

That was part of my rant when this whole thing broke. When Putin signed the ban it was done so with a hell of a lot of chest thumping patriotic fervor. It was a big deal.

That was why I found Jr’s “adoption” defense so utterly implausible. Putin and the Russians LOVE that ban.

      http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/28/world/europe/putin-to-sign-ban-on-us-adoptions-of-russian-children.html

      • safari

        Just not the sanctions

        • Cuberly

Precisely. The whole adoption ban is a nationalistic Russian purity thing. It’s seriously creepy & f’d up. There’s no fucking way they’d repeal that.

          From the article.

“There are probably many places in the world where living standards are better than ours,” Mr. Putin said. “So what? Shall we send all children there, or move there ourselves?”

          • fuzzybits

Plus they would rather have those kids spend their lives in horrible orphanages.

          • Cuberly

Hillary Clinton was already viewed as a neoliberal corporate whore and neoconservative warmonger before Bernie Sanders ever entered the presidential race. And the reason why she was viewed that way is because that’s exactly what she is.

and still not balancing the budget.

      • This neglects the deleterious effects of the Trump/GOP regime itself.

Car sales are down. Tourism is in the toilet. U.S. reputation is so bad, international investors and corps are looking elsewhere. Job numbers are softening. If Trumpcare passes, that’ll be another massive drag on the economy. Oh, and guess what? The dollar is significantly weaker due almost entirely to the Trump/GOP fuckery because, well, the rest of the world doesn’t have the confidence it used to that America was a stable, rock-solid country. As soon as the GOPers and Trumpty-dumpty explode the deficit and start dropping hints about debt defaults, it’ll head further south.

It takes about 6-12 months for new policies to ripple through the economy. We’re now seeing the beginning effects and unless we clean house ASAP, it’s gonna get really bad. Like maybe Great Depression bad.

Fortunately for her, I think he’s probably too physically incapacitated for that now…

    • My interpretation? Macron didn’t let Donald get away with the arm-yank grab shit the last time they met. So the craven bully did what bullies do: Go after someone smaller. In this case, I truly believe Donald intended to physically harm her to a degree, as if to say, “See what I can do to your pretty wife. And she lets me because she has to.”

      • Donald behaves like a vulgar, violent mobbed-up thug because that’s what he is and always has been.

      • ByronK

That’s so disturbing but what I have noticed is an establish pattern. He does not make a public appearance with any women where he does not comment on their appearance. But he also treats women like objects and possessions. It’s like he was congratulating Macron on having a beautiful wife like he owned her. The way he treats Melania, walking away and leaving her behind and basically showing no basic attention or care for her. “Put the luggage in the car. Oh, and her too.” It’s an established pattern – “I moved on her like a bitch.” Just another toy for the rich little boy.

        • Alexander Stallwitz

Apparently the ultimate insult. Also, remove the just creepy part which is hard to do, but it’s a very disturbing indication of his opinion of women when he sexually objectifies his daughter. It’s like the only context that he can deal with women in. Not just a madonna/whore thing going on, they’re all whores in his mind.

God, inauguration day. Drumpf got out the limo at the White House, and walked up the steps. The *Obamas* went back to the limo and helped/escorted Melania. No wonder…

Aside from Trump being a disgusting and embarrassing human being, what’s up with her skinny arms? Holy crap, First Lady of France needs to eat some more of that wonderful food.

      • I kinda agree. She’s too damned thin.

        • ByronK

OT – but Trump related. I was staying in an Embassy Suites in Florida last night and all five televisions in the atrium and lobby were on Fox News. After a few glasses of wine I went up to the front desk and asked the person working why that was. She said they put the TVs on what guests ask for. I told her that was bs. I stay in Hiltons (the owner of the ES brand) and Marriotts all the time and they never put all the TVs on the same channel. Most Hilton properties put an equal number of TVs on CNN and Fox. When I went to get breakfast this morning the TVs were all on different channels – NBC, CBS, CNN, Fox and ESPN. I try not to be an ass, but sometimes it works.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Most restaurants I go to have it on sports or movies when there’s just one TV.

      • johncAtl

ESPN is the safe choice. Except that they are owned by DIsney-ABC. Paging OMM to boycott Red Lobster.

      • AJ Drew

Yup, the one local lesbian-owned bar/grill here always has some sportball thing on the TV. I asked once why they couldn’t at least sometimes show something different like YouTube videos of Britain’s Got Talent or some such; the reply was “Oh, great idea. No. But here’s a free appetizer.” sigh.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

Sports is just too powerful in the US. I’d gladly take a cooking show or a nature show.

As an aside, I notice it’s always guys playing sports that’s popular. Women playing sports doesn’t seem popular unless it’s like tennis, Olympic gymnastics or figure skating.

A few years ago, my bank was merged with an out-of-state bank from the South. The lobby TVs all changed to Fox. The manager said it was out of her hands. I told her she had one week to get it into her hands or my account and, more importantly to her, the business account would find a new home. Voila, it worked. The two tellers thanked me.

TOTALLY OFF TOPIC, but I’m posting it late at night to keep it out of the way and in hope some of you music types will read it and offer advice.
Has anyone had any dealing with SMP Press insofar as publishing/selling your music is concerned? I’d like to get some of my stuff out there, particularly my piano duets, in the theory someone may actually be looking for ragtime duets. Or maybe some of my choral attempts. I’ve only ever had one piece published, and that was by a small press that never paid for anything. So…have you had experience? Was it good or bad?

OT: This is what gets me about these billionaires. They’re dumber than fuck. (I am not an economist)

    1. Turning the US into a 3rd world country makes it an unstable country . . . The kind of country where even rich neighborhoods are unsafe. Their kids are safe now but create a situation where 80%+ of people are literally eating out of dumpsters and you’re going to spend all the money you save on protecting yourself and your kin 24/7. Look at Saddam and Qaddafi, even that didn’t work.

    2. 3rd world countries do not have highly rated currency. They crash the country, they can crash the currency and if their wealth and properties are centered here, then it hurts them. Though yes, they can totally send it overseas.

    3. For some reason, they hate being seen as evil. Well, they are the human equivalent of guinea worms, so they can fuck themselves.

“In all of this litigation and debate, this Department of Justice will never allow this secular government of ours to demand that sincere religious beliefs be abandoned. We will not require American citizens to give intellectual assent to doctrines that are contrary to their religious beliefs. And they must be allowed to exercise those beliefs as the First Amendment guarantees.

We will defend freedom of conscience resolutely. That is inalienable. That is our heritage.

Since he was elected, President Trump has been an unwavering defender of religious liberty. He has promised that under a Trump Administration, “the federal government will never, ever penalize any person for their protected religious beliefs.” And he is fulfilling that promise. First, President Trump appointed an outstanding Supreme Court justice with a track record of applying the law as written, Neil Gorsuch. I have confidence that he will be faithful to the full meaning of the First Amendment and protect the rights of all Americans.”

      • coram nobis

Your post is a verbatim quote, to be clear, so it’s Sessions speaking here. (need to use the blockquote coding)

And it is not the “full meaning of the first amendment” if it raises the free exercise of religion but silences the Establishment clause, i.e., that government by action or inaction would foster a sectarian view over everyone else.

Before they allow a perverted interpretation of the 1st Amendment–one where the Establishment Clause is ignored–to be used as an excuse for religious fanatics to stamp out the civil rights of people they hate, Americans should–with large and relentless protests–PARALYZE any government which attempts to support blatantly unconstitutional acts (unconstitutional regardless of the bad-faith excuses fascist judges will invent to support them) until that government RELENTS.

Protest like HELL–make enough noise to wake the dead–if governments attempt to revive Jim Crow-like laws in the 21st century!!

Don’t let ANYONE discriminate quietly–make their miserable, hateful lives a living HELL!!

NOTHING can, in a true democracy, justify or legitimize fascism in ANY circumstances, EVER; and certainly not an election where the “winner” did not even receive majority support–far from it–and one that’s very legitimacy is seriously in question!!

Protest injustice, or live like pathetic, downtrodden SERFS in a country which is no longer a genuine democracy!!

If this is the speech he gave, it’s generally the Free Exercise clause with no deference to the Establishment clause. Specifically, it means bearing down on the so-called Religious Freedom Restoration Act with the full force of DOJ.

Congress enacted RFRA so that, if the federal government imposes a burden on somebody’s religious practice, it had better have a compelling reason. That is a demanding standard, and it’s the law of the land.

“Compelling” isn’t just a nice adjective but a key word in the strict-scrutiny standard, the highest. It means that a religious nonprofit hospital can refuse medical care to a gay couple or pregnant unmarried woman and the government would have to show a compelling interest, via a narrowly-tailored, least-restrictive policy, to make the hospital do otherwise.

    • Sam_Handwich

ABC reported that his speech was given to a “hate group”

and then it was… leaked, i guess? maybe by ADF?

    • Max_1

In short: Religious Liberty laws are being used to discriminate against a class of American population. This is NOT American in it’s value. All men are created equal, said the Preamble. And the Constitution is the means toward creating that equality. The DoJ seems intent on undoing the founding principle we all strive toward; All people are treated equally. And the part that’s lost on Sessions is the “UNDER THE LAW” part.
