Malta Becomes World’s 24th Nation To Legalize Same-Sex Marriage In Lopsided 66-1 Vote By Parliament

Reuters reports:

Maltese lawmakers voted on Wednesday to legalize same-sex marriage on the Roman Catholic Mediterranean island, fulfilling Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s campaign promise to make this the first law brought before parliament in his new term.

Malta was the 24th country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage with today’s vote coming just two weeks after German lawmakers approved a similar measure in June.

The opposition Nationalist Party backed the introduction of same-sex marriage, despite fierce criticism from some conservatives, who said it marked a damaging departure from the party’s Christian-Democratic principles.

The vote was 66-1 with the lone objector saying, ” A Christian politician cannot leave his conscience outside the door when he enters parliament.”

Back in December, Malta’s Parliament voted unanimously to ban ex-gay torture, the first country in the world to do so.

Around 90% of Malta’s half-million residents are Catholic and Catholicism is nominally the official state religion, per their constitution.

But, but, where is Brian S. Brown?!?!?!??!

  • shellback

Congrats to Malta, but who designed that ghastly cinder-block-looking room?

    • That_Looks_Delicious

I think those are marble or granite tiles, but not sure.

    • MDixon34
    • theonlyseven

It’s probably limestone. Malta is basically a big lump of limestone and they build everything with it. The interesting thing is its rather soft when quarried and easy to carve then over time it hardens. This helped make them one of the epicenters of Baroque architecture. Even modest houses are richly carved. For whatever reason I guess they wanted something different.

  • katkelly57

    Molto Malta!

  • VodkaAndPolitics

Worth noting is that Malta’s top Cleric is this Mary… Cardinal Raymond Burke. Burke is a priest from St. Luis and arguably the most anti-gay catholic clergyman in the world. I bet his panties are in a really really good bunch right now. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/Burke-Galero.jpg

    • shellback

      OMG. That’s hysterical.

    • Tawreos

They should be in a bunch, that outfit is terrible.

    • Todd20036

Anyone else see Robin William from Mrs. Doubtfire in that photo?

      • Tawreos

I can see it, I also see Grandma Red Riding Hood on Easter Sunday.

      • FAEN

Oddly it looks like Dick Cheney in a dress to me.

        • That_Looks_Delicious

He DOES look like Cheney. You’re right.

          • FAEN

Glad it isn’t just me who sees it.

Did she steal that outfit off a toilet roll?

    • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

Just another example as to how detached the Catholic hierarchy is from their layfolk. The more the church rails against something, the more its members support it…LOL!!!

    • grada3784

If his panties aren’t, his train certainly is.

    • Nic Peterson

Eeeww! Some girls should never wear red. Also, that hat and dress? Really? What was she thinking?

    • ChrisMorley

Cardinal Burke is NOT Malta’s top cleric. The top cleric is Malta’s Archbishop, Charles Jude Scicluna.

Burke is simply the “patron” of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which is based in Rome. The Order was chucked out of Malta by Napoleon in 1798.
‘Malta’ in the Order’s name misleads many people. It and he are based in the Vatican where he makes it his reactionary job to get up the pope’s nose, a lot. The Order has a very large dressing up box for Raymond Burke and his knightly cronies.

    • andrew

Is there a str8 man on the planet who would dress up in those glad rags?

I was just in Malta last month visiting a friend. Really beautiful place and great people. Well except for maybe one guy. I actually started looking at real estate prices.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Every place you go has that one guy.

    • bambinoitaliano

I wonder if I can hitch a ride with that piece of broken iceberg and claim as my property while docking at Malta.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

I think that iceberg would probably hit South Africa or Argentina first. But they have marriage equality too, so…

        • FAEN

That Afrikaans accent always makes me swoon.

          • barrixines

Ay ay ay. An ex was South African. When he spoke Afrikaans even “I love you” sounded like “You have ten seconds to leave the compound before we release the dogs”.

          • FAEN

            LOL!

          • FAEN

I had a friend in college who was from Cape Town-he was very sweet, very hot and I think knew I was gay but didn’t care. Every time he spoke….well let’s just say he made me very happy 😉.

In Atlantic Canada we call a 24 pack of beer a flat. A flat is a good thing.

We now have a flat of equal marriage supporting countries. Satisfying. Thirst quenching. Delicious.

    • orion dumptee

      Schooner?

      • Mark McGovern

Ah, you know something about this…? Yes we all started on Schooner; it was the beer of the day when I was a kid. Now I drink Moosehead.

As other countries move forward, we have bigots in this country trying to move us backwards.
In the past two months, Focus on the Family has added four new state hate groups )OR,IL, NM and GA) to the 40 plus they already had.
    Makes me sick.

Malta’s one place I’d consider fleeing to: they mostly speak English and there’s ancient Goddess temples a cool modified car scene. If only there was more shade. 🙂

    • Tulle Christensen

Make your own shade buy a parasol

      • Friday

I figure I could manage somehow. I’m already in the frickin South. 🙂

Best line in Sondheim’s “Sunday”: “And parasols!” The quintessence of Western civilization.

  • scream4ever

I first heard of Malta while doing a game in elementary school geography. The clue was, “what country is named after an ice-cream drink” LOL

    Although not to get married.

Just wait. You know that, any day now, some right-wing Maltese nutjob is gonna want to marry his falcon.

    • theonlyseven

It’s the stuff dreams are made of.

  • KnownDonorDad

    Excellent, who’s next?

  • andrew

Roman Catholicism is the State Religion of Malta and 98% of the people are Roman Catholics. More proof that the Roman Catholic Hierarchy has little or no real influence on the lives of ordinary Catholics. Deal with that Cardinal Burke.

  • rednekokie

Congrats, Malta — welcome to the world of the sensible and loving.

  • Paul

    Congrats to Malta!

Why is the German President taking FOREVER to sign that bill?!

  • Bj Lincoln

It’s not the people who practice, it’s the church.
Good for them. They are moving in the right direction. Let the lonely christian sit by himself. I bet he doesn’t have many friends or is liked much.

  • Gest2016

I was in Malta last month, and trust me, there was a man who I would marry on just about any other corner. The Maltese men are simply gorgeous. Maybe its not too soon to go back 😉

  • theonlyseven

Let us take time to appreciate the irony of gay marriage being approved by a legislative body in a room with a crucifix on the wall.

  • JCF

I’ve just written to an official of the Anglican Church in Malta, to see what their same-sex marriage policies are/will be. Wish me luck (or *cough pray cough*) for a good word for y’all, soon! 🙂

Think Malta would be a beeeautiful place to get married….

  • Jay Mills

How embarrassing and heartbreaking it will be when the US destroys marriage equality. Hopefully, other countries, instead of looking toward America for leadership, will somehow keep the march going forward. As the haters say: we are all cucks now.
