Liberty Counsel: Congress Needs To Do Its Job And Impeach Any Federal Judge That Rules For LGBT Rights

The same old whining, over and over and over. Miranda Blue reports at Right Wing Watch:

Mat Staver, the attorney behind the Religious Right legal group Liberty Counsel, guest-hosted VCY America’s “Crosstalk” program on June 26, the day that the Supreme Court ruled in the church-state case Trinity Lutheran Church v. Comer.

While Staver was happy with the Trinity Lutheran ruling, he told a caller that he was frustrated with Congress’ refusal to impeach Supreme Court justices and other federal judges who “create law” on issues like abortion rights and same-sex marriage.

“You know, as these life-long appointments, certainly the founders understood that they wanted these individuals to, number one, not be affected by the political cycle, and number two, they thought Congress would do its job and impeach people whenever they stepped out of line,” Staver said. “But Congress hasn’t done its job and we’ve allowed these cases to get out of control.”

Don’t you know, the founders wanted the constitution to only protect Evangelical Christians.

  • Treant

What? Marriage laws already existed. So did treating people fairly regardless of the gender involved. Add the two together and you…don’t actually get anything new.

  • JWC

as much as Trump has given us the term “Fake news” he also gave us “Has this man have nothing better with his time” “Nuff said

  • Kelly Lape

Displaying (once again) a complete lack of understanding of the nature or our Constitutional Democracy. Congress may impeach, but not because of a dislike for a decision. Politicizing our courts was one of the things our Constitution was designed to prevent. Eat shit mother fuckers.

  • Natty Enquirer

Impeachment is a supremely political act, Mr. Slobber.

  • Pollos Hermanos
  • Uncle Mark

How cute. Mat Staver, who’s lost every case he’s ever taken on (and should be disbarred for representing so many frivolous religious nut job cases)…is now advising how we need to handle the courts and the judges. Well, I guess it’s to be expected that a consistently-losing crybaby would demand the rules and the referees be changed in his favor.

Perhaps Mat Staver should take up a different game, if he’s so bad at it.

    • Ron Robertson

And shouldn’t he also soon be going to jail for abetting a kidnapping?

Staver-boy: I don’t think anyone needs any lectures on what people should do coming from you.

  • another_steve

Get a real job, Mat. Sell Fuller Brushes door-to-door.

(Do people still do that today?)

    • safari

Vacuums last I checked are still door-to-door.

      • another_steve

        Really? Wow. 1950 flashback.

I’m old enough to remember when “dry ice” was delivered to your door and you put it in your “ice box” to keep your goods frozen.

        • Lizard

Dry ice? As in carbice? Frozen carbon dioxide?

          • another_steve

Yes. It came in large cubes. I remember being warned not to touch it. If you did, you got frostbite. It lasted as a cooling agent longer than real ice, which is why it was popular at the time.

This was in 1950s New York City.

          • BudClark

Wasn’t that the first “air-conditioning” on trains? Fans blowing across dry ice?

          • another_steve

            Could very well be, BC.

I was surprised to read about all the current-day commercial uses of the stuff.

      • Gustav2

A couple of years ago there was a door to door salesman in our neighborhood with steam cleaners.

Hoover…..the power of an upright in your hand !

    • Ted.OR

      Do door-to-door “religion” salesmen count?

      • another_steve

        Only if they’re Jehovah Witnesses.

Clearly, it’s proof of intelligent design…although maybe not in the way the Christianistas hoped.

Matty-poo. Remember Fat Tony and his Opus Dei fascism? ‘Judicial activism’ at its best…but of course IOKIYAR.

  • Tulle Christensen

I object, assumes facts not in evidence like “stepped out of line”

  • Rex

Congress needs to do it’s job and impose taxes on religious organizations.

    • Uncle Mark

EXACTLY…If they have this much money to throw away on moronic lobbyists and frivolous lawsuits, then they clearly aren’t being taxed enough.

    • Congress needs to do its fucking job and IMPEACH that ferret-wearing cheeto-faced SHITGIBBON and Pence and whoever else is involved in Russian collusion!

      • Ted.OR

Baby (pictured at left) is offended by the thought that ANY ferret would allow him / her self to appear on top of 45’s head. She assures us that NONE of the ferrets on any of her social networks would stoop so low!

Nobody puts Baby in that corner.

    • Hanwi

This should be upvoted millions of times!

    • Snarkaholic

Religious organization = business…a business where you rake in vast amounts of money, while providing NOTHING in return. Hell, even casinos offer you the entertainment of gambling (plus meal comps, etc.) while they’re robbing you.

    • Lizard

Hell, SCOTUS just ruled that churches are eligible for taxpayer-funded projects. There’s a damn good argument to be made for taxing them.

    • MonochromeMouse

They need to tax the shit out of them, treat them like the alcohol or tobacco industry and tax them extra for their harmful products.

    • ted-

      Thank you!

  • Bluto
    • Todd20036

I’m going to burn for laughing at that!

Ditto. I’m still giggling over it.

Yes, it does seem low class, crass, and sacrilegious along with the humor. 🙂

Ha ha ha I want that poster, bumper sticker and engraved on my tombstone.

    • Patrick O’Gormley

To RETURN one needs to have been here before, so there’s that against their thesis… lol

  • Ninja0980

He does realize that this could be used against judges he likes too right?

    • Uncle Mark

Nah…spoiled, bratty children don’t think that way, since they’re always the exception to most rules

    • Bluto

Uh no. Those one’s have been anointed with special jeebie juice or something.

      • Uncle Mark

If he’s allegedly been anointed by Jeebie, why has he lost EVERY FUCKING CASE HE’S ARGUED? Either he’s praying to the wrong god or god doesn’t support his shit.

It’s almost redundant “Christian assholes.” You must know some that I don’t. I kid. I know a small handful. NALTs.

  • joe ho

This is going to get really ugly–with the federal judiciary packed with Trump/Heritage picks for a generation. Christian Dominionism reinforced at every level. Anti-LGBT legislation on the fast track.

2016 election was a watershed moment.

Too bad so many liberals were too lazy or too righteous to vote for Hillary.

Too bad Putin was so easily able to play the far-left into voting against their own best interests.

Sad. But now a generation of needless suffering that could easily have been avoided will have to be endured. That’s the unfortunate price to be paid for lacking political discipline and thinking dressing up like Che Guevara and throwing bombs is better than real, incremental progressive change.

    • Ninja0980

They didn’t learn from 2000, they truly didn’t.

      • joe ho

Like the far right, they’re so ideologically rigid they can’t learn.

Because of the court situation, though, this time is exponentially worse than 2000 and the Reagan years.

Sarandon and her band of Bernie or Busters are the scum of the earth.

    • JT

“But, oh, I’ll lose my purity if I vote for her! And my purity is more important than people’s suffering and the degradation of the country.”

    • Lizard

We need to impose terms and term limits on SCOTUS justices. The Constitution was written when the life expectancy was about thirty years shorter. I doubt the Founding Fathers so beloved by the right wing ever intended SCOTUS judges to be on the court for decades.

      • -M-

Replacing one every four years might be a good thing.

        • Lizard

Not necessarily four, but the fact that we still have justices appointed by Reagan is fucking ridiculous.

          • FredDorner

The first federal judge to strike down DOMA was a Nixon appointee as was the judge who struck down Michigan’s marriage ban. So not every elderly Republican judge is a bigot or a moron, just the vast majority.

          • -M-

It’s just an example. But turnover every thirty six years seems like a reasonable ballpark.

Another alternative I’d thought of is added random removal. Like the first eight to sixteen years of your appointment nothing’s different, you can only be removed by death retirement or impeachment, anyone who is past that grace period has a small random chance of being removed by a lottery at the end of each term. Adjust the probabilities so that most years the lottery wouldn’t expel anyone but it does often enough that there’s a reasonable rate of turnover and you can’t count on a judge staying for forty years or more just because they’re young enough to live that long.

      • joe ho

        Not going to happen.

In fact, the GOP controls so much of the govt.–federal and state–that they’re almost at the point where they can actually rewrite the Constitution.

LGBTs are in for some very dark times now. It hasn’t begun to register for most yet.

Too bad so many didn’t take the threat and the election seriously and preferred to virtue signal and do their far-left posturing and Che Guevara play-acting instead of closing ranks like the GOP does.

  • David
  • Friday

Err, Staver, you seem to be under the misapprehension that your fringe hate-religion is supposed to be *in* ‘control’ in the first place. This happens to be false.

That’s a pretty dumb statement. If Congress impeached judges every time they felt like it these individuals WOULD be affected by the political cycle.

    There’s a war coming.

      Do-it-yourself revolution:

      2. Systematically funnel money and resources from the lower to the upper class–CHECK
      3. Systematically dehumanize minorities and political opponents, normalizing violence and discrimination against them–CHECK

  • Adam Stevens

Maybe Staver should pack up his law office and become a coal miner?

  • GeoffreyPS

Why hasn’t this jackass been disbarred by now?

  • Kruhn

Hey Matt, what “High crimes and misdemeanors” have these judges committed? Engage in rulings you don’t like? Be afraid, people. This could be the first shots in another battle to weaken institutions these people don’t like.

Remember when we mocked people lambasting the media?

  • FAEN

    Just STFU already.

  • BlindBill

In Independence Day was about freedom of belief .,. Many patriots do not believe in your religious interpretations, which is no problem until you want courts to adopt your wayward beliefs as civil law. Go away until you understand “liberty”

  • netxtown

And, quite obviously, the American Bar has not done its job in removing overtly theocratic council from their ranks.

  • Chaz Antonelli

Is it just me, or is the general divide in the United States approaching civil war levels ever since the last general election? East/West Coastal states (liberals) vs Bible and Grain-belt fascists? Ever since the cheeto was elected, I’ve been warning folks: “get your gun(s) and ammo while you can!!” we’re going to need to defend ourselves from these sky-pilot believers!

    • netxtown

The part “they” won’t be ready for is all of us liberals all across the bible belt. They will be surrounded.

  • CraigNJ

So a Dem controlled congress could have impeached Scalia, Thomas, and Alito???

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Now, now, you know the rules, when republicans do shit, it’s always patriotic and right. Did you not get the memo? 🙂

  • Schlukitz

God forbid that all taxpaying members of a society should have equal rights and protections.

It should be noted that these kind of comments always, without exception, come from those who have been exempted from paying any taxes because of their fucked-up religious views. You, I and all of the other taxpayers in the nation, get to pick up their share of the taxes that they should be paying just so that they can preach against and discriminate against those who are not exactly like them or share their beliefs.

To these ingrates who should be saying thank-you to those who are financially supporting them, like it or not, I say “Either pay your fair of the taxes we pay for you…or STFD and STFU!

  • Dana Chilton

It’s no surprise he doesn’t understand how government works.

Christianists desperate to corrupt the judiciary, too, while they have access to ill-gotten power.

Congress needs to do its job and impeach the tiny-handed vulgarian shit-gibbon occupying the White House.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

The man really doesn’t understand the constitution, let alone how the law is applied and, at many times, interpreted. What a buffoon.

  • Gianni

According to his rantings, Congress literally could reduce the Court to a
useless entity. I’m sure a Justice’s decisions cannot be used as
weapons to impeach. Mat, God love him, is suggesting that whenever the
ruling party in the Congress doesn’t like a Supreme Court Decision, they
should just proceed to drum up some sort of criminal activity conducted
by the offending Justices and get on with impeachment proceedings. That
takes a long time and will likely guarantee that Congress accomplishes
little else. (Of course, there could be a divided Congress. Is he
talking the majority in the House or the Senate?) Bottom line: Mat
Staver is loon and a loser with a so-called law degree.

Staver – One of the faces of the American Taliban – stupid and evil.
