National Teachers Union Leader: We Won’t Work With Betsy Devos, “The Queen Of For-Profit Privatization”

The Chicago Tribune reports:

The president of the country’s largest labor union, Lily Eskelsen García of the National Education Association, told delegates at her organization’s annual gathering that they would not work with the Trump administration because the president and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos could not be trusted to do what is in the best interests of children.

Eskelsen García just addressed the 96th NEA Representative Assembly meeting in Boston, accusing President Donald Trump of residing “at the dangerous intersection of arrogance and ignorance” and labeled DeVos as “the queen of for-profit privatization of public education.” She said in part:

“Let me say this to all of you as clearly as I can, so that even if you disagree with me, you understand what is in my heart: I will not allow the National Education Association to be used by Donald Trump or Betsy DeVos. I do not trust their motives. I do not believe their alternative facts. I see no reason to assume they will do what is best for our students and their families. There will be no photo-op.

If only we had this steely-eyed clarity across the progressive movement.

    • CanuckDon

      I think it’s coming.

      • The_Wretched

Not with the DCCC’s bizarre, “we dont want to win” message from yesterday.

    • Silver_Witch

I am pretty sure the progressive movement was clear all along. It was moderates who told we were not wanted nor NEEDED. So we stayed away as was requested. Never time you uninvited people to your party don’t pout went the party FAILS. #NotBlueNoMatterWho!

        Uh…what now?

  • olandp

Good for her! I come from a family of teachers, my grandmother was a proud NEA member as were her children who went into teaching, including my father.

By the way, Grandma graduated from the University of Florida when it was an all men’s school. She was good…

    • KnownDonorDad

      There’s a great story in there…thank you!

  • Bluto
  • AJ Drew

Nice! Now then, could the DCCC ask her to write a slogan?

  • geoffalnutt

Betsy Devos is a common criminal making money for herself and her cronies off the backs of children. She has no interest in “education”…only in money.

    • northern_neighbour

She is the epitome of “an alternative ‘fact’ ”

She is also a soulless ghoul riven through with EVIL that isdressed up as the opposite.

In other words a GOP MONSTER from your “Christianist Nightmares”. Selling nutrition deficient AMWAY lunch KKKrap to private/voucher schools, reaping money from the public school taxes thus diverted. Defrauding both kids and parents. Never declared her conflict of interest, btw ….

      • olandp

She was born into a family with money then married into a family of successful grifters. Quite the accomplishment.

    • The_Wretched

I think she also wants our population less educated; it means more seats in churches.

    • -M-

Money and replacing education with her Christianist sharia.

  • netxtown

Devos is just another sleazy skank taking taxpayer funded programs and shorting the funding to private ‘companies’. Her focus is getting a bigger slice of the American tax dollar. She has no time for kids…or anyone else, for that matter.

Fuck her and the fake book worm she rode in on.

      Proud of my NEA!

      • TuuxKabin

        As well you should be!

  • Joe in PA

Cue the calls for union-busting. Sigh.

  • Tomcat

Glad to see there is still at least one moral person left to fight trump.

  • Galvestonian

…but that’s what Republicans do and they find no wrong with it — how to profit from it — they glory in their so-called ‘big business’ ethics – sell it off – whore it out – get as much as you can – they don’t get sentimental or do they care who they hurt as long as it benefits them and by them I mean now – suck it up – drain it – plow it under – rape the earth and profit – above all profit. The future doesn’t matter – it’s the “me” people – the Republicans . Fuck anyone who can’t go along with it and the poor, the middle class , the non- white, the non protestants, the gays and the rest of the population.

  • KnownDonorDad

Bravo! If only one other Republican had had the fortitude to turn down DeVos – but resistance to her and her policies is the next best thing.

  • Clive Johnson

A conservative know-nothing who is dogmatically committed to the fictions of competition and privatization.

  • Kelly Lape

If there were a National Teachers strike this fall… Reagan fired PATCO – Lets see Trump fire every Teacher in the Nation. Strike with one goal – Betsy Gone and X in. The Union should decide who leads.

    • Sporkfighter

We don’t work for the federal government. If I went on strike, it would be against my local school district. My superintendent and school board are already on our side.

      • Kelly Lape

Sometimes taking a stand goes beyond your own best interest or those of your community. A house divided cannot stand. If you fail now your turn will come.

        • Sporkfighter

But striking against my local school district who support the same causes I’m supporting by striking is like boycotting Apple because many bigots own iPhones. There’s just no connection.

I don’t work for the federal government. I work for a local school district which reports to the County Office of Education and the California Department of Education headed by Tom Torlakson, a liberal Democrat my union campaigned for.

          • Kelly Lape

whatever you tell yourself so you can sleep at night. Betsy will have fun when she gets to you and they’ll be no national union left… Pleasant dreams.

          • Sporkfighter

I spent eight years as my local’s treasurer and contract negotiator. Don’t lecture me about the value of unions.

          • Kelly Lape

            Apparently someone needs to.

          • Sporkfighter

… or you don’t know what you’re talking about.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott was protesting the actions of the bus system in Montgomery. A nationwide boycott of all local bus systems including those that did not discriminate to protest one that did was never considered because it would have been a stupid idea.

Boycotting all hobby stores because one chain discriminates would be stupid. That’s why I don’t shop at Hobby Lobby but I do at Michael’s.

What good would it do for me to strike against a local administration that supports my causes, against a local school board that supports my causes, against students and parents who have supported my causes? All it would do is fuel anti-union sentiment by hurting my allies. No thank you.

Exactly what experience do you have with a union? Ever belong to one? Ever been an officer in one? Ever negotiate salary and benefits for your fellow members? Ever attended a hearing to defend a member’s rights? No?

  • The_Wretched

Good! Lily Eskelsen García nailed it.

  • aagold76 .

    BRAVO Ms. Garcia!!!

  • TheManicMechanic

We need a lot of opposing voices like this.
