INDIANA: Obergefell Attorney Launches US House Bid

One of the lawyers who represented the Kentucky plaintiffs in the Obergefell case is running for the US House. The Indianapolis Star reports:

A prominent local civil rights lawyer announced this week that he will challenge incumbent Rep. Trey Hollingsworth for his seat in Indiana’s 9th Congressional District in 2018.

Dan Canon, a Louisville lawyer who is best known for helping win the right of same-sex marriage in Kentucky, announced his first political run on Monday. He has lived in the district for 30 years and currently resides in New Albany with his wife and two daughters.

The lawyer is also representing a trio of Kentuckians who use medical marijuana and are challenging the state’s ban on the drug. He also represents four couples who sued Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, saying she should pay $233,000 in attorney’s fees after she refused to give marriage licenses to the same-sex couples in 2015.

The GOP in that district must be loving him. The only problem they will have is what do they hit him on first?

    • Todd20036

If they cannot find anything, they’ll make something up

  • another_steve

Oh my… imagine the hate that will ensue. Imagine.

Best wishes to him and may he remain strong and brave.

  • kaydenpat

    Yes. He. Can.

  • Tomcat

Kentucky will fight against that medical marijuana.
They have to protect their Oxy Contin doctors or dealers.

    • another_steve

That’s an excellent point. I had never thought of that source of opposition to medical marijuana.

      • bkmn

        Those opposed to pot legalization:
        Alcohol companies
        Pharmaceutical companies
Tobacco companies (though not as vocal any more)
Fundamental Christers who don’t know squat (until they have to deal with cancer, at that time they change their tune)
Police (who lock up lots of people for pot)
Law enforcement ancillaries – groups like DARE (who have built an industry demonizing pot)
        For profit prison industry

        • That_Looks_Delicious

          ESPECIALLY that last one.

        • another_steve

Essentially, any business entity that could potentially lose money as a result of legalization, or any group (like the fundamentalists) that could potentially make money by lobbying against it.

        • Tomcat

Actually MOST cops want it legalized so they can give their attention to other bigger problems.

          • licuado de platano

I’m not so sure about that.

        • edrex

which is ironic b/c the first three on your list pair beautifully with a joint.

          • bkmn

True, and I know police in Washington state have definitely changed their minds after a few years of legal recreational pot, but the majority of cops, and almost all the bad ones, like being able to bust people for pot crimes.

    • Don’t see why they would have a problem someone would still have to write the script, it may been seen as naive but I don’t believe they get any kick backs like some claim just patients who want the pain to stop.

      • Tomcat

Do you believe one gets hooked on marijuana?
Well they KNOW people get hooked on OXY CONTIN.

        • All the more reason the ones that care will want it legal.

      • Sporkfighter

Pot growers don’t have sales reps handing out perks for writing prescriptions.

    • Hank

KY has a fair amount of marijuana being grown throughout the state (illegally), even some state parks. I do know, that on a large hospital in Eastern KY, there was, 10 years ago, a sign at the ER entrance, that NO Oxycontin was available!! However, in the same part of the state, where there is a lot of coal workers, with various injuries, the private MD’s “may” be writing the prescriptions that created the epidemic. Then there is the illegal suppliers, as well.

I’m not too optimistic about Indiana, but I’m glad he’s running and wish him well.

    • Tomcat

It is only one district in Indiana so he does not have to win all of Indiana.

  • That district has been blue not long ago. He has a chance.

  • Lazycrockett

Well he does have Indiana University and the suburbs of Louisville Kentucky, so he has a chance.

  • pch1013

The ‘progressive’ mafia is busy examining his entire life and career with a microscope even as we speak, looking for the tiniest hint that he is less than 100% pure and should therefore be CRUSHED LIKE THE NEO-LIBERAL REPUBLICAN-LITE DNC TOOL THAT HE IS.

I just saw the other day that the head of one of Bernie’s PAC’s will not commit to not challenging Democrats. When will they learn that Democrats are a hell of a lot better than handing the seat to a deranged GOPer.

      • Todd20036

They don’t care. People who are pro Bern are all about cults of personality.

      • pch1013

Not as long as they cling to the lie that “both parties are the same.” Unfortunately that belief shows no signs of going away.

        • Todd20036

Al some of them care about is their own pet agenda, and ANY deviation from that agenda means you are against all of it.

Heck, Clinton voted with Bernie 93% of the time. And that wasn’t enough.

Even though Trump would have voted nearly 0% of the time.

      • Tomcat

My My, isn’t he one of us????? He did claim to be when it was convenient.

        • Todd20036

As I recall, most of the people with whom I worked to secure Pennsylvania in 2012 for Pres. Obama were progressives and well aware that he isn’t. But, enjoy your narrative.

      • pch1013

And most of the people on the left who enthusiastically participated (and still participate) in spreading lies about Hillary, who is politically indistinguishable from Obama, are progressives.

        • CJAS

I’m not sure what lies to which you’re referring, but, what I do know is that progressives didn’t make her campaign
ignore pleases for resources from Pennsylvania and the Midwest. Nor did they make her run that inept ‘won’t somebody please think of the children’ ads here. (The NJ Democratic Committee flooded Southeastern PA with ads on his defrauding contractors—astute.) Nor did they make her suck at public speaking—it’s not like she’s had 30 years to master the craft.

It’s really weird to see him endlessly love Russia. Did he fixate on “From Russia with Love?” and misunderstand all of Ian Flemmng?

          • -M-

My guess, they’ve been grooming the dunce for years. Steady diet of flattery and Russian propaganda. He probably believes their bs regarding Ukraine, Syria, Belarus, ‘cooperation’ etc.

He’s ignorant, gullible, vain, greedy, dumb, desperate for praise and has probably been depending on Russian capital to keep financially afloat since the nineties. He’d have been useful for laundering money, parroting their propaganda about how the West is so mean to them for no reason, criticizing enemies like Obama and Clinton.

          • The_Wretched

I’d love intel agencies to leak that sort of data that the Russians must have collected during their running of him.

          • -M-

Imagine the experiences of the people working him. “Boris, no one can be this stupid. It has to be an act.”

          • Jukesgrrl

Believe me, anything Trump knows about James Bond he learned from the movies. He wasn’t reading Flemming’s books.
