Stephen Colbert Rants: Stop Pretending That Trump Is A Symptom Of Something, He IS The Disease [VIDEO]

Mediaite reports:

On Thursday night, Stephen Colbert slammed President Trump over his tweets attacking MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski. “I’m gonna say something right now that I did not think was possible anymore,” he began. “I am shocked by something Donald Trump said.”

Colbert read the tweet out loud in his Trump voice and reacted, “First of all, someone bleeding badly at your door and you say no? It sounds like your health care plan.” “This is shocking and vicious, so on brand,” he added.

The Late Show host read off some headlines, calling the tweets “vulgar,” “crude,” and a “new low.” “No, it’s the same low,” Colbert responded. He added, “Let’s stop pretending that Trump is a symptom of something; he’s the disease. And the only cure is three-and-a-half years of liquor and bed rest.”

So are we gonna eradicate this problem by impeaching him? Something has to be done to get rid of this little boy embarrassment.

    • Boreal

Then we get Pence. We are fucked.

      • Tomcat

Not if we have the numbers, now that they removed most of the 60 vote requirements.

      • Gerry Fisher

It is truly a long-term Resistance project.

    • Tulle Christensen

the best we can hope for is to get a Dem Congress in next years elections

      • Tomcat

Maybe Senate, but gerrymandering stops any hope of the house.

        • swimboy

Not necessarily. If you look at what gerrymandering does, it moves the tipping point for most districts from an even distribution to a distribution that is highly compressed around a value a little less than 50%.

In a non-gerrymandered state, small fluctuations in the opinions of the population cause small fluctuation in representation. In gerrymandered areas, as long as they can get that number of votes that’s somewhat less than 50%, they get most of the representation. But if they can’t get to that number, it’s disastrous, as they lose *lots* of races all at once.

If people voted based on Trump’s current approval rating, no amount of gerrymandering would help the repubs. They’ve been playing with fire, getting comfortable being able to win elections without being popular, but eventually it will all come crashing down.

      • StudioTodd

No, the best we can hope for is a fiery crash of Air Force One carrying Trump, Pence and his entire cabinet.

    • David Walker

Sometimes removal of the cancer isn’t enough. Sometimes tissue around the cancer cells has to be taken out, too. Get rid of the cancer cells, but also get rid of the seemingly healthy cells surrounding it because they stood a very good chance of being infected.

  • Gustav2

Can someone tell me who, other than Joan Rivers, would be in a place as public as Mar-a-Lago after a face lift.

    • FloBear

It wasn’t a face lift, it was a minor procedure that left a tiny bandage. Only a boor would comment on it.

  • Tawreos

“And the only cure is three-and-a-half years of liquor and bed rest.”

I wish Stephen was a doctor and would write that out for me, so I have an excuse for what I want to do anyway.

    • JCF

I am getting a bit worried for Stephen. He really is hitting the sauce during the show now (esp in “Stephen’s Midnight Confessions”: he’s got a highball in every one of those now!)

  • bkmn

I would say right wing media that creates their own alternate reality is the disease. Trump is just a con man that used that alternate reality to his advantage.

    • cleos_mom

That would make the right wing/infotainment media the contaminated food or water. It’s the people who support him and his party, in the media or otherwise, who are the disease.

    • Michael White

this disease has been smoldering since St. Ronnie of Hollywood

      • mr wonderful

Agree. Reagan was the end of the Republican party.

        • -M-

At least one of the major points where they chose expedient evil over morals and duty.

      • Karl Dubhe

It can be argued that it’s been burning since Nixon was pardoned.

That was when the Rule of Law was overturned for the very powerful, since then it’s just gotten this much worse. 🙁

      • JCF

As I just said: I think since Nixon’s Southern Strategy. There’s an ontological difference since President Eisenhower, and the Rethuglican leadership thereafter….

  • crewman

    Melania’s spokesperson:

As the First Lady has stated publicly in the past, when her husband gets attacked, he will punch back 10 times harder.

Colbert: As the First Lady says, when they go low, we go 10 times lower.

    • JT

Super Fan to the Super Bully.

  • Mike

Funny joke, but actually Trump IS just a symptom. The Republican party is the disease. After all, the reason the Republicans are overlooking the humiliation and all-around degeneracy of Trump is because he’s granting their every wish on destroying the environment, destroying education, destroying health care, everything.

    • RoFaWh

And they voluntarily allowed themselves to become infected by letting the religious right into their party.

    • narutomania

Yep – you beat me to it, Mike. Trump is just one big orange festering pustule on the fat ass of America that has been fighting this particular disease for some time now. It has just gotten worse recently.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    ” He’s the disease ”

Understatement of the next 10 centuries.

    • Beagle

I’d say a symptom. The disease is what looks at something as vile as Dump and says, “That’s what we need in the White House.” Without that, Dump is just that idiot uncle that you try to avoid at Thanksgiving dinner.

  • Bj Lincoln

This is what I left at his youtube channel.
“Thank you Stephen for never holding back from speaking the truth about Drumpf. The man-child proved over and over before the election he was unfit. After 5 months of nothing but BS he has proven he should have NEVER become President. He has no real interest in being President or he would have at least tried to understand the the job and the issues. He has every symptom of a person who can’t read which explains a lot about his lack of knowledge and details. He doesn’t understand most of what he is signing and can’t deal with to much input because he never had to remember anything. His money has shielded him from so much real life that he lives in one of his own making. This is why he is so thin skinned and can’t handle rejection or that people don’t like him. So many say he is smarter than he lets on yet his limited vocabulary and constant skimming over details paint a very different picture. Drumpf and the GOP sold our country to the highest bidders. Not one of Drumpf’s appointments know a thing about the departments they are now heading except many want the department shut down or changed drastically. A climate change denier in charge of climate change ? A woman who has never been in a public school with no experience head of education?! Have you been reading what she wants to do and not do with our kids education?! Almost every one of them are against LGBT civil rights too. The federal government has been erasing LGBT rights from their websites, the national census and the American Senior census. Keep up the good work Stephen! W need you to keep the pressure on and tell the truth about the joke we now call our government. Thanks!”

    • RoFaWh

BJ, a suggestion: keep it MUCH shorter. As long as it is, no one will take time to read your words of wisdom all the way through.

The internet invented the abbreviation “TL:DNR” for a reason.

  • DoctorDJ
  • -M-

No. Trump being President and being allowed to violate all the rules and responsibilities that come with the position are symptoms of a deeper rot in U.S. politics and civil culture.

The Republicans were determined to rule the country with unlimited power, and perfectly willing to do anything it took to make that happen. They may be surprised that installing a psychotic infantile moronic Putin-owned clown as dictator for life was the means, but they’re ok with it or he wouldn’t be there.

    • Snarky

Exactly. Win at all costs. When they were rigging Congressional elections across the country by gerrymandering safe districts they were playing the long game. When McConnell told GOP Senators that they would obstruct Obama’s every step, they were playing the long game. When Fox, Drudge and the rest delegitimized our first black president at every step, they were playing the long game.

Russia, they hadn’t counted on. That was a bonus for them. And to be honest, they expected to be making champagne toasts to a Bush or maybe a Rubio in the White House right now. But instead we all got Trump.

And the Republicans were so invested in their zero-sum game that they’re even willing to throw in with him and all the destruction of institutions that he’s brought along, just because it means their side won.

They got the toy they wanted, and they’re determined to break it.

      • RoFaWh

Somebody needs to whisper into every conservative ear:

“Trickle down doesn’t work at all and the rest of your crappy excuse for an ideology doesn’t either.”

  • Gerry Fisher

Probably the scariest thing about this segment? It seemed as if a large part of his in-studio audience had not heard about it (gasps of shock). Soooo…if the late-night comics aren’t talking about it, they’ll never hear about it?! Oy.

    • JCF

That’s been true a long time now—as long as it’s people like Colbert and Stewart and Meyers and Oliver and Noah and Bee doing it, I don’t have a problem w/ it!

  • Professor Barnhardt
  • Jean-Marc in Canada

    Colbert ON FIRE!!!!

  • JCF

As much as I LOVE Stephen, I gotta disagree w/ this one. Drumpf is the MOST DEADLY SYMPTOM of a disease that’s been growing since “Ketchup is a Vegetable” St Ronnie Raygun (and perhaps going back to Nixon’s “Southern Strategy”). It’s the vile/loathing/HATRED of those one deems “lesser”: lesser by race, lesser by economic circumstances, lesser by sexuality, lesser by gender, lesser by religion (as in belief-system brandname), lesser by national/linguistic origin.

Drumpf fires his hatred as if out of a sawed-off shotgun. But Post-Eisenhower Rethuglicanism has been building towards this for a LONG time…

  • DonnaLee

Funny how the comments on YouTube are mostly against him, but the overwhelming amount of likes are for him.
