IML Founder Chuck Renslow Dies At Age 87

Tracy Baim reports at the Windy City Times:

Chuck Renslow, 87, a longtime pillar of the LGBTQ community in Chicago and around the world, has died after multiple long-term health issues. Renslow reigned over a seven-decade empire, starting more than two dozen businesses—bars, discos, photo studios, health clubs, bathhouses, gay magazines and newspapers, hotels, restaurants and bookstores. He fostered organizations and dealt with Mafia and police payoffs, the Chicago Machine, anti-gay government policies, and controversy within the gay community.

Because of his businesses, he also knew celebrities from Marlene Dietrich to Rudolf Nureyev, from Divine to Sally Rand. He even helped with the Kinsey Institute’s sex research. The founder of International Mr. Leather, owner of Man’s Country and the Gold Coast bar, publisher of the GayLife newspaper in the ’80s, political activist, and much more was an out business owner since the ’50s. He was a critical contributor to a wide range of political, social, business, health and other causes.

Heartbroken. What a fascinating, brave, awesome man. Read his book. It’s amazing and RIP. CHi would not be the same without him.

  • bkmn

So much for that supposed short life span teh gehz have.

    • Boreal

      Right. I’ll gladly take 87.

      • Ninja0980

        Same here.

    • Jay Mills

I remember something about 45 years old tops

      • Boreal

        I’m past life expectancy then.

        • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

I’m only past my expiration date.

          • Boreal

            Those are just suggestions.

          • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

My bad anyway. It’s the sell by date that I’m past, not the expiration date.

          • Ray Taylor

            Me too.

        • David Walker

Hell, you can’t even read my best-if-used-by date.

          • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

I can’t read anything without my glasses anyway.

          • MT YVR

(flips you over)(starts looking) Huh… so far, true. I can’t.

          • David Walker

Yeah. It used to be… Never mind.

      • Karl Dubhe

So, I’ve been dead for five years?

        Strange afterlife… 🙂

        • Philly Mike

the strange part of it started when tRUMP was elected

          • Karl Dubhe

Ahhh, that explains everything. We’re all in hell.

How bizarre. It’s not as hot as I was told it would be.

          • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

            Climate change.

        • agcons

I’ve been dead for 13 years. Why am I still paying taxes, that’s what I want to know.

      • MT YVR

        I sooo misread that.

“Tops that are 45? Yes? And? Hello?”

        (prim) Ahem. Nevermind.

    What a life well-lived.

  • I often went by the Leather Archives on Clark in 1986-87. Chicago was the city I came out in back then. I think it still was the Gold Coast Bar next door. There was an election and a candidate would be there so I thought it would be safe. That’s where I met my first leather man who taught me so much. RIP Chuck Renslow.

  • Natty Enquirer

There’s a huge collection of IML videos (1984-1991) in San Francisco that I preserved several years ago. Saw a lot of Mr. Renslow back in his heyday!

    • Cuberly

I bet the GLBT Historical Society in SF would love to have those for their archives. They don’t have a lot of video or movies in their collections and are frequently getting requests for those from documentarians etc. They’re very accommodating with specific use stipulations.

      http://www.glbthistory.org/museum/

      • Natty Enquirer

They are already home in the Society’s archives. They’re part of the Chuck Cyberski collection, over 600 hours of digitized video.

        • Cuberly

          Oh! Awesome!

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Okay, time for a personal story. The Gold Coast, in its original location (now a law firm!) was the first gay bar I visited at 13 years old. Back then the drinking age was 18 and I was already 6′ tall and shaving (and a 29 inch waist – ah the memories).

I found out above the place when it was published in the newspaper after a raid. The walls has larger than life Etienne murals. I snuck out of my home while my parents were gone for a long night of theater. I had just gotten contact lenses as a bar mitzvah present and was somewhat new to them.

This was earlyish in the evening, because I had to return home by public transportation, before my folks. Seeing real life, had to be gay men was thrilling and although I felt out of place, I also felt like I belonged. One of the contacts popped out and I remember that I was terrified (and turned on) to go to the men’s room, thinking I would be tied up or kidnapped or sold into slavery. I clenched the hard contact between my middle finger and palm for the rest of the evening.

I made it home with quite a few scrawled phone numbers in my pocket and, critically, before my folks returned home. To this day, Ettiene’s and Tom of Findland remain my all time favorite artists.

Long winded, but a memory tied to Chuck that I fondly remember.

    • Raising_Rlyeh

From my understanding, didn’t they end up painting over the murals at the original location of the Gold Coast because the guy that owned the building wanted to sell it for another gay bar?

      • Cuberly

I thought they preserved some of them. The Chicago History Museum has one posted on their Pinterest account.

        https://www.pinterest.com/pin/165929567490628411

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

I thought they were giant wood panels, not directly on the walls. The walls were brick. The ended up in some other bars for a while (AA Meat Market I believe had some). And there was a fire at AA and at least one of them was burned at the bottom. I remember seeing it elsewhere after that, but don’t remember where.

        • Raising_Rlyeh

I thought they did the giant wooden panels starting with the second location, but I could very well be wrong. I am going off what I remember from my visits to the leather archives.

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

The one I remember with brick walls and panels was on Illinois & Clark Street, in the 1970s. Was there an earlier one? It was also a million years ago, so my memory could be wrong as well.

        • chiMaxx

Some were lost. Some moved to the Eagle. Those Etienne paintings that remain are mostly at the Leather Archives and Museum in Chicago. Chuck Renslow founded and spearheaded this institution of now 25 years.

    • another_steve

      Great story, Larry.

Wow…your first gay bar at age 13?? I like to brag about having come out at age 19, but you got me beat by a mile!

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

My folks didn’t find out till I was 16 and I was out in general once I left high school at 18.

      • MT YVR

The husband was out much earlier than I did. At 15 he took off from home and went to the Northwest Territories. Survived on the money a vice principal, baker and I think gym teacher were giving him. (ahem) Put himself through school.

I’ve friends who were sneaking off to parks and cottaging at 12 and 13 and 14. It was a different world.

Ahh… when we were young and pretty. 😉

        • another_steve

Don’t know whether there’s any research on point, but I assume the average coming out age has gotten considerably younger over time. The primary dynamic at work: the internet.

Prior to the internet, most young ones were pretty much in the dark when it came to “what was out there.” Today, a few key strokes and you have detailed info re what’s in your community.

Even more so, the immediate access to good info on what it is/means to be LGBT. There’s a lot of shit out there on the web, but a lot of good stuff too.

          • MT YVR

It’s funny. I’d say it’s gone the other way. The hub is 52. Most of his contemporaries here have veeeery similar stories of really young ages. I see people now waiting. Taking their time.

But I’m not sure anyone knows if it’s universal or just specific groups or generational or…

          • UrsusArctos

As soon as I got a drivers license I was headed to the “queer bars”. Alcohol was legal in Alabama at 18 then. There was no problem with a 16 year old who didn’t act like a kid being there with his people. 16 and hanging out at the Bourbon Pub & Laffitte’s in NOLA wasn’t an issue either. I did get funny looks in Atlanta – apparently in 1976 a kid in a bar drew double takes but didn’t get ran out. Yes, I was a precocious adult molester.

          • Goodboy

That reminds me of my home town. I just knew I was the only gay in town. It’s a small town. Well, went home recently and opened up the Grindr and it lit up like a Christmas tree of profiles all around me. My God. If only I had that technology when I was a kid.

  • Jim in TO

So many great memories of IML
I loved when it was at the Congress hotel before it was renovated – the stories housekeeping could probably tell.

    RIP Chuck

O/T but the hubby and I gave relationship advice to a younger same sex couple that has moved in two blocks from us.
We aren’t perfect but we’ve learned a thing or two over the years and if we can help out the younger generation, we’ll be glad to do it.
Glad they reached out to us and I hope they took everything we said to heart.

    • David Walker

Well done and congratulations. Jack and I made up most of how to be together as we went along. It worked for us, but I’m glad the young couple had a talk with you. Our models for being couples were our parents…maybe not always the best examples. I’m very happy that the four of you got together to talk about being together. Obviously, it doesn’t always work out, but when it does, it’s wonderful.

Damn you lucky, I’ve wanted to go to IML for years but I didn’t get my first chance until 2015

      • Lakeviewbob

We are kind of in reverse. I went to IML for years but 2015 was my last before I moved to California.

        • Rambie

Aww, too bad but California is a great state too.

        • DaddyRay

I sort of have a variation on that. I grew up in Chicago, went to IML for year (leather mart, contest…) but it wasn’t until I moved to San Francisco and came back to Chicago to stay at the host hotel that I got the full experience and saw IML for all that it was.

          • Lakeviewbob

Such memories. Although I never stayed at one of the hotels, I only lived a short bus ride away and sure had lots of fun and lots of hook ups.

          • DaddyRay

Staying at the Congress Hotel which is shaped like a U and having an inside room that faced the wall of windows on the other side of U was an exhibitionist / voyeur wet dream come true

          • Lakeviewbob

LOL. It was like staying at a bathhouse. Ah, such memories.

          • DaddyRay

On the very first day while checking into the hotel I went to the mens room in the lobby and they had unscrewed the lightbulbs and it was packed with guys going at it … IN THE LOBBY BATHROOM

I also acted as Den Daddy for a bunch of young gay men and lesbians who were attending the contest to show support for our city’s contestant. I’d always bring binoculars to the Congress, and we would all sit in the dark, on the hotel room bed. We would hand the binoculars around, saying “Check out the window over there – that guy is getting fucked right against the glass, and he’s grinning at us!”, or “Isn’t that Skippy the Wonder Dog on the fourth floor? I can hear him barking – He’s having a LOT of fun!”
The main attraction was the lobby, any time of the day or night. There was always a light fog of testosterone floating in the air, as men cruised hard. I’ve told folks for decades: There are two distinct crowds that go to IML: The folks who care DEEPLY about community and titleholder contests, and men who don’t give a rat’s ass about any of that, and just want to fuck with as many strangers as possible. Nothing wrong with either group.
Photo is the Congress lobby around 10PM, in 2001. The contest is in full swing, elsewhere.

          • DaddyRay

great picture – I am going to blow up that photo because I am probably in it (unless I was in someone’s room).

I agree on the two types but there is now a 3rd type – the young club kids that don’t care about leather but the dance party

One year the Waterboys from San Diego were in the room next-door – housekeeping had to bring the wet dry vac to their room

            LOL. Boys will be boys.

          • Lazycrockett

Yeah its all fun and games til the next weekend when the desk clerk (me) has to try and explain to the Happy family up from St. Louis for the Cubs game where the dildo that lil jonnie is chasing around lil bobby with, that was found under the queen sized bed, came from.

          • DaddyRay

            Two related stories

One year there was such bad weather that our flight got canceled so we had to stay at the hotel a day longer than expected. We walked the halls the next morning and on one floor housekeeping was just leaving the trash from the rooms in the hall. We had to see at least 40 dildos

Another year while checking out a guy bumped into one of the columns in the lobby and dropped his bag. The bag broke open and was filled with only dildos which proceeded to bounce around the lobby floor in every direction.

          • Lazycrockett

The fun of looking for a wrench in the utility room so the boys can hook up their enema hose.

          • DaddyRay

Joe, another friend Doug and I had to call the front desk to have housekeeping come to the room because the shower had a special locking lug that we couldn’t unscrew ourselves

          • Mow

The last time I went was 2002. Some memories:

I spoke to some of the housekeeping staff members (I had overheard one speaking to another about his hometown in PR, which was mine as well so I said hello). They said after so many IMLs, they had seen everything, so nothing really fazed them anymore. He also said they loved the IML crowd for several reasons:

            we were always polite to them;
            we gave them the least amount of hassle out of almost any convention the hotel had ever hosted;
            and we were generous tippers.

A dear friend set up his portable sling in his room, and housekeeping staff always laid a clean towel in the sling after cleaning the room.

Once, travelling down in an elevator for the night’s festivities, a handful of generously unclad guys and I got in with a maid that was there. One guy broke the silence by making a quip about how safe she was surrounded by half naked men. She laughed and said in an incredibly wonderful Minnie Mouse voice “I know! And you all are so handsome!” We all told her what a beautiful voice she had. She blushed and said she hated it because she was always being teased over how high it was. One of the men said “it’s beautiful. just like you.” She lowered her face, fighting back tears and said very quietly “thank you”. The two men next to her both gave her big hugs, and as we walked out, I could swear she had a bounce in her step.

One IML was hosted at another hotel that had an atrium. In the middle was a huge water feature, and one afternoon, a wedding party was taking pictures in front of it. A group of men walked by and complimented the bride on her dress. She beamed brightly and invited them to take a picture with her. So somewhere in the midwest, there is a married couple with a picture in their wedding album of a slightly confused groom, a beaming bride, bracketed by leathermen. All smiling for the camera. (Someone please correct or refresh my memory of the other hotel.)

          • prixator

Thanks for sharing that. I love stories about kindness, particularly to strangers – especially these days.

          • thom

I like to think of myself as sex positive and kink friendly, but subjecting housekeeping to the aftermath seems problomatic to me.
Enjoy your kinks but take responsibility to clean up afterwards

          • DaddyRay

I think that gets a bit difficult when you invite 30 guys to your hotel room – not like you checked a shop vac for your flight. I will agree though housekeeping certainly has some war stories. It might be interesting to compile their stories in a book.

          • thom

Just seems like your involving non consenting people into your kink.

Have one person be in charge of rubber sheets, or tarps or one shop vac.
Sex should be fun, exciting, taboo all these above. But some poor person is being forced to clean up bodily fluids in order to keep their low paying job.

Not sure that should be amusing

Every Christmas I ask my mother what a Sacagawea coin is. She has three of them, and I remember her getting them at least twice from the post office or Walmart. Each time she’d come home excited: “Guess what? This is a dollar coin!” Then she’d put it away like a trophy. The first Christmas I asked she didn’t believe me that there was a golden dollar coin until I told her to look in her jewelry box for them. She got a look of horror on her face since she had no memory of them. Since that first (and second) Christmas, she never forgot when I ask.

      • Hue-Man

As long as the U.S. keeps printing $1 bills, the coins will not catch on. Supply/demand – Canada stopped printing $1 bills so consumers and business, especially vending machines, had to convert. Coins last longer than paper (or plastic) bills. (I rarely use cash – occasionally for parking meters?)

They’re going after voter registrations, to suppress the vote even more than they already have! They’re obstructing justice–they will steal future elections as they did in 2016–and they are plotting MURDER with their “healthcare” bill!!

Act NOW before it’s TOO LATE!!

  • Whoa… Bit of a heavy read on a Friday night, but worth it:
    https://twitter.com/lawfareblog/status/880981860830072832

    A taste:

Over the course of our conversations, one thing struck me as particularly disturbing. Smith and I talked several times about the DNC hack, and I expressed my view that the hack had likely been orchestrated by Russia and that the Kremlin was using the stolen documents as part of an influence campaign against the United States. I explained that if someone had contacted him via the “Dark Web” with Clinton’s personal emails, he should take very seriously the possibility that this may have been part of a wider Russian campaign against the United States. And I said he need not take my word for it, pointing to a number of occasions where US officials had made it clear that this was the view of the U.S. intelligence community as well.

Smith, however, didn’t seem to care. From his perspective it didn’t matter who had taken the emails, or their motives for doing so. He never expressed to me any discomfort with the possibility that the emails he was seeking were potentially from a Russian front, a likelihood he was happy to acknowledge. If they were genuine, they would hurt Clinton’s chances, and therefore help Trump.

Smith is the guy said to have been acting or *trying* to act as an intermediary between the Russians who were in possession of hacked DNC/Clinton data and the Trump campaign.

    • safari

Never let these points go unknown.

    • I pulled the trigger on that post early… the really meaty stuff comes toward the end:

      (A) few weeks into my interactions with Smith, he sent me a document, ostensibly a cover page for a dossier of opposition research to be compiled by Smith’s group, and which purported to clear up who was involved. The document was entitled “A Demonstrative Pedagogical Summary to be Developed and Released Prior to November 8, 2016,” and dated September 7. It detailed a company Smith and his colleagues had set up as a vehicle to conduct the research: “KLS Research”, set up as a Delaware LLC “to avoid campaign reporting,” and listing four groups who were involved in one way or another.

The first group, entitled “Trump Campaign (in coordination to the extent permitted as an independent expenditure)” listed a number of senior campaign officials: Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, Sam Clovis, Lt. Gen. Flynn and Lisa Nelson.

The largest group named a number of “independent groups / organizations / individuals / resources to be deployed.” My name appears on this list. At the time, I didn’t recognize most of the others; however, several made headlines in the weeks immediately prior to the election.

My perception then was that the inclusion of Trump campaign officials on this document was not merely a name-dropping exercise. This document was about establishing a company to conduct opposition research on behalf of the campaign, but operating at a distance so as to avoid campaign reporting. Indeed, the document says as much in black and white.

I remember Dan from before he had a body.

Dan and Terry’s son is straight, but it does strike me that when I was a teenager, no one’s dad looked like them and no one’s mom looked like some women in their 40s and 50s do now.

When I was a teenager, I rarely thought anyone older than mid-20s was hot, but at that time virtually no one older, not even celebrities, had a body one could fantasize over. Today there are lots of guys in their 30s and 40s I think I might like if I was a teenager. I don’t consider it unusual to walk down the street and see lots of guys who wouldn’t look out of place at least as extras in a movie.

I guess I’m wondering if there are more kids growing up these days having uncomfortable feelings about their parents’ friends, or teachers or people their parents are dating.

When I look at couples like Lance and Tom,

I see two guys who pretty much dress identically and do the same things recreationally that a lot of people with money and no kids do, regardless of age. While there’s a generation between them, neither dresses or behaves in a way that’s unusual for people their age, and I think that’s relatively new.

        • That_Looks_Delicious

It is. Some sociologists have been commenting negatively on this trend as the “Peter Pan Syndrome.” I am definitely not a fan of hair-dying, hair plugs, botox, facelifts or cosmetic surgery or adults wearing clothes two sizes too small and two decades past when they should.

But as far as people staying active and fit as long as they can, that’s just science and that’s a welcome development, I think.

  • Lazycrockett

So Im watching Real Time and really the show if it kept the same format and dumped Maher it would be much better.

    • safari

Maher is Maher. I like most of what he says, but I do know that he is Bill Maher. I still stand by that having him quoted in a piece about sex parties for the well to do where he wasn’t the focus was quite nice to see. It was just like “Yep. I’m at a pay for play orgy. How boring.”

      • Lazycrockett

I just think that he’s just becoming a very narrow minded person. Plus hes lost his edge.

        • That_Looks_Delicious

He has been doing it a very long time. Letterman and Leno have already retired. Every now and then he’ll do a really hilarious ‘New Rules’, but sometimes they fall flat.

        You’re welcome.

I sent it to a friend following this text: It’s really good prosthetic make-up when you can still see the actor inside, as in this photo of Ron Perlman.

    • SoCalGal20

Ron Perlman is another great follow on Twitter! And this is awesome.

    • Lazycrockett

Question? should and when should you cut them back? Mine are getting spidery.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

I can’t tell what they are. Columbines? Petunias?

        • fuzzybits

          Petunias.

          • That_Looks_Delicious

They also look a lot like the morning glories that used to grow wild in the fields next to my house when I was a kid.

      • fuzzybits

We don’t cut them back until the fall. Maybe yours got too much water.

        • Lazycrockett

          well mine are in boxes.

          • fuzzybits

Either that or maybe they need more light.

          • Lazycrockett

well they bloom fine and plenty but I heard that cutting them back makes for fuller closer blooms…..

          • fuzzybits

Sometimes. If they’re really leggy you can try and perhaps they will.

          • Treant

Theoretically, assuming that they’re getting enough potassium and phosphorus (nitrogen is important, but if you overdo you get vegetative growth at the expense of flowering).

      • Treant

+1 Fuzzy. Or too much nitrogen.

You can chop back until each strand has only one pair of leaves, but that’s a really aggressive cut. Personally, I’d just reshape to a bit smaller than you want, and realize it’ll take some time for new buds to form.

    • Treant

Suxxors that you can’t grow petunias!

  • AJ Drew

    Happy 150th Canada!

Thank you for Trudeau as an example that kind, intelligent leadership is still possible.

OT – There are those really cool cops we’ve been discussing over the last week, and then there are cops like this. This is why protesters don’t want cops at Pride. We can’t pretend this is okay.

          racist moron

It’s the Drumpf enabler, moronic Ish. Another asshole.

          • Ish

I think your Hillary Clinton’s instruction to the DNC to elevate the Trump campaign had a wee bit more to do with his victory than my choice to abstain in NY state. Not to mention her tweedledum act to his tweedledee, and the vile attitude of her supporters like you the and the rest of the racist vipers nest on this blog.

          • JT

Oh, yes, it’s Ish, the innocent. You fucking scumbag. You need to take responsibility for all the bullshit you and your douchebag cohort spouted against Drumpf’s opponent in the campaign. You’ve enabled a Nazi takeover.

          • Ish

Slave owner and war monger Hillary Clinton was a bullet dodged. Had she been elected, the fascists out there on the street would have been just as emboldened. Democrats are a dead end, witness their pathetic and powerless attempts at “resistance.”

          • JT

            You’re a moron.

Canada back on top of world’s most reputable countries list
    http://globalnews.ca/news/3567232/canada-back-on-top-of-worlds-most-reputable-countries-list/

    Amurica drops 5 points since Trump – We’re #38!!!!
U.S. sees biggest drop in reputation
The study found the U.S.’s reputation dropped nearly five points, the biggest drop any of the 55 countries, putting it in 38th place.

That’s largely due to Donald Trump.

“The main setbacks for the reputation of the United States are concentrated in the variables ‘is run by an effective government,’” the press release states.

    • Hue-Man

It’s un-Canadian to stand out in a crowd; most of us would prefer to remain in the top 5 or top 10 – usually with the Scandinavian countries – and let someone else take the abuse! There are exceptions of course – hockey championships come to mind.

      • DaddyRay

Well for their 150th it is just one more thing to celebrate

      • Reality.Bites

Yes, but this is top for having a good reputation. It’s the honour a country’s mom would want it to have. We’re the Doris Day of countries. Our baddest bad boy rapper is a Jewish kid from Rosedale named Aubrey who literally went to Degrassi High.

No sympathy for him. He STILL supports Trump and his agenda even though, because he’s Mexican, he’s a direct target. Idiot.

Also, he told his youngest daughter who to vote for and to work on Issa’s campaign. Asshole.

I lived 2 blocks down the street from the LA&M when I was in college. It’s a cool little museum. One year, my roommate’s sister had a small birthday party/meetup there. I arrived late and was told I missed the fisting*….

    RIP Mr. Renslow.

*That appeared in the porno that was playing at the front of the house. I think you have to reserve the dungeon or something if you want real live fisting.

  • I first met Chuck in the early 80’s when I wandered into the Gold Coast. I was very young, very nervous, and in those days guys were very suspicious of a new face in a leather bar. Chuck smiled at me and made me feel comfortable and welcome. After that I would see him around the Eagle and IML. I remember how he fought to keep the bath houses open in Chicago as places to educate and spread information during the worst years, while other cities were shutting down theirs and driving men underground. I remember when he and Joesph Bean opened the Archives in the back of a little store front on Clark St. because he wanted to make sure our history was remembered. He was by any definition a great man – a community leader, a contributor, a great businessman. In so many ways his passing marks the end of an era. All my sympathies go out to Ron and Joe – his partner and his boy.
