Wayne Besen’s Truth Wins Out Closes Shop After 11 Years Of Shutting Down Ex-Gay Torture Organizations

Via press release:

Dear Truth Wins Out Supporters:

On our 11th anniversary, it is with a mixture of great sadness and overwhelming pride that I reluctantly announce that Truth Wins Out is closing down. All good things must come to an end – and it is time to say goodbye.

Truth Wins Out is closing because we accomplished our major goals. We helped expose and ultimately vanquish (with the help of other heroes) major ‘ex-gay’ programs including Love Won Out, Exodus International, and JONAH.

Yes, similar programs will always exist, as charlatans will provide a supply of snake oil to fill a demand. However, Truth Wins Out has created a robust legacy that irrefutably proves ‘ex-gay’ activists are frauds and such programs are a hoax that exploits hate. We battled these groups tooth and nail, in their heyday, when they were truly a threat to LGBT rights. Indeed, Truth Wins Out was started when George W. Bush invited ‘ex-gay’ activists to the White House in 2006.

I ask you for one final tax-deductible donation today. It is important that we keep our websites (TruthWinsOut.org, LGBTScience.org, TWOCARE.org) operating in perpetuity. There is priceless information for reporters, parents, and people who need facts on ‘ex-gay’ programs and the religious right. It would be nothing short of a tragedy if these websites, bursting with history and knowledge, disappeared.

I need your help to keep the websites up and running. If you have ever given to Truth Wins Out – I urge you do so one final time to ensure our resources remain available into the future. Please consider a $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, or even a $1000 exit contribution.

As a reminder of our portfolio, Truth Wins Out accomplished:

• Getting the APA to send a letter condemning Focus on the Family and NARTH by name in 2006

• Protested dozens of ‘ex-gay’ conferences across the country from Alaska to Alabama

• Launched undercover investigation proving Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and her husband Marcus own a clinic that practices ‘ex-gay’ therapy (We thank John Becker for his key role going undercover)

• Organized the American Prayer Hour, an event that shined a spotlight on the role American evangelicals played in the introduction of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

• Led successful petition campaign to have Apple remove Exodus International’s ‘ex-gay’ iPhone app

• In a joint investigation with South Florida Gay News in 2010, TWO exposed JONAH’s Arthur Abba Goldberg as a Wall Street con artist and convicted felon

• Worked with Southern Poverty Law Center in their amazing and successful legal effort to shut down Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality (JONAH).

• Brought enormous attention to the harm caused by the ‘ex-gay’ myth. This includes ABC World News Tonight, ABC’s Nightline, ABC’s Good Morning America, MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, MSNBC News with Thomas Roberts, MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, CNN’s AC360, Fox’s O’Reilly Factor, FOX’s The Sean Hannity Show, and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Print: USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Advocate, Newsweek, TIME, The Nation, and Mother Jones.

I want to take a moment to thank other activists who also played key roles in exposing the ‘ex-gay’ myth. It was truly a team effort.

Dr. Jack Drescher, Peterson Toscano and Christine Bakke (Beyond Ex-Gay) Jim Burroway (BoxTurtle Bulletin), Mike Airhart and David Roberts (Ex-Gay Watch), Same Wolfe, Mark Potok, Christine Sun and the folks at Southern Poverty Law Center, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, filmmaker Morgan Jon Fox, Lisa Darden, Chaim Levin and Benji Unger (brave men and heroes who took on JONAH and won), Amity Buxton of The Straight Spouse Network, Bonnie Kaye (Straight Wives), Mel White and Jeff Lutes (SoulForce), Mitchell Gold (Faith in America) and so many others I’m too old to remember.

Also, we would be nowhere without help in the early days from key LGBT media who covered us: Joe Jervis (JoeMyGod), Andy Towle (Towleroad), Mike Rogers (Raw Story), the folks at The Advocate, and Norm Kent (South Florida Gay News).

Please give one final tax-deductible contribution to Truth Wins Out so our websites can be maintained. Our information helps people across the globe and it is critically important it remains available.

With Love,

Wayne Besen
Truth Wins Out

  • Do Something Nice

What a GREAT service he did for our community. Thanks, Wayne. We won’t forget you.

  • Good riddance, Wayne.

    • Skokieguy [Larry]

      Explanation please.

      • That his job became unnecessary. Sorry, I should’ve elaborated, got distracted by spousal unit’s request for chat.

        • Skokieguy [Larry]

So good riddance to the ex gay torture organizations that Wayne helped expose, not good riddance to Wayne?

I will provide a brief, yet hopefully amusing distraction to spousal unit…

          • Whatever, my response was inelegant, but it’s too late to undo the mistake.

          • KnownDonorDad

*whispers* Edit function! Has saved me quite a bit. 😀

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

But it resulted in penguin-cat so all good.

          • That_Looks_Delicious

Any excuse for a penguin-cat is a valid excuse.

What a nasty skank. She looks like she has a stick up her ass.

    • searanch

      her eyes/facial expressions are creepy!

      • Waarki

That thing is NOT human. Some sort of alien lifeform and possibly animated robotic but definitely not human!

        • kaydenpat

I believe it’s the one at the back.

          • FAEN

Sick bastard. I am very very non violent but this sort of behavior boils my blood!

          • clay

reaching for his mother’s pendant, until he realizes it’s a GOP elephant, not an overweight dog.

      • PickyPecker

Dear FSM! What an unattractive family! I recommend complete sterilization for the bunch.

        • Boreal

          Nuke em from space.

          • PickyPecker

            It’s the only way.

          • 2guysnamedjoe

Easy-peasy, cuz they’re visible from space.

        • Jonathan Smith

          and THATS just the dog.

          • Falconlights

LMAO. Poor dog–I’d look like that, too, if I had to be with those idiots for any significant length of time.

      • kaydenpat

For real. That dog looks like he’s seen some nightmarish things. What an alt-attractive family.

        • Boreal

          • RoFaWh

Let’s cut through the shit of alt-this-and-that and call the Huckabee family by the right word: non-human.

          • Boreal

I’m using their terms to define them.

      • FAEN

Jesus-everytime I see a pic of them it reminds me of the X-Files episode ‘Home’.

        That poor dog.

      • Robincho

You don’t usually see whales as far inland as Arkansas…

      • shellback

I’m guessing the entire family will join Linda Harvey in the McDonald’s boycott. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA

      • Miji

I’ve always gotten a good laugh from the one where they dress as rodeo clowns.

        • Pollos Hermanos

I grieve for every toilet seat in their house.

    • thom

      AP WH reporter…
“This is the conversation the White House wants. Make everything muddy so partisans gravitate to their own corners.”

    • djcoastermark

Wow, what a fake, without any news either.

    • kaydenpat

Why did you make me watch that LC? All she did was play the martyr and lie, lie, lie. Nothing new. These are all such horrid people. Four years can’t go by fast enough.

    • Acronym Jim

For some reason, I haven’t been able to watch videos on the Twitter platform for a while now. Was that the exchange where the reporter castigated the administration for trying to harm the public’s trust in any reputable news media?

Where her response was “ah don’t thenk, ah’m enflaaaymin’ enythin’?”

  • Pollos Hermanos

He missed Jeremy Hooper and Pam Spaulding who I think both get overlooked a lot lately since they retired.

    • thom

      I miss them!

    • Boreal

I used to always read Pam’s House Blend. It was one of my go to sites.

      • ETownCanuck

        Mine too.

      • Pollos Hermanos

Mine too. JMG, Pam and Good as You were my top three.

        • Pam is great. we’ve hung a few times and xchanged etc. what i like about her is that she is so Serious. do NOT get into a policy discussion with Miss P, as she will eat your lunch while burning your still bleeding heart as she pisses on the grave of your family’s progenitor. I understand blog retirement; i did myself after… back in the day i can honestly that that every once in a while, people (white male democrats writing for those kinds of publications) would say, “Pam and CD think that…” we were authenticators, in the heydays. to know us was to be real in the credz dept. it’s too populated and busy these days for that sort of thing to matter. “i once had sex in an elevator in front of Kos” doesn’t and never will have what it did back in that day. 😉

      • RobynWatts

Likewise. Through Pam, I’ve learned about JMG. I’m very thankful for all the work that she had done for the community.

        • Boreal

          I miss her blog.

          • prixator

I still have it listed in my newsreader app. I keep hoping to one day find a new post!

        • Skokieguy [Larry]

That’s how I did too and I also miss Pam, but am thrilled to have found JMG.

        • Falconlights

I learned about JMG at her blog, too.

      • Nychta

Me too! The Blend was the first political/human rights site that I read regularly. I miss Pam’s blog, and am very glad that JMG is here.

    • Jacob

      God I miss Pam.

    • Wayne Besen

I did overlook them, unintentionally. They were a huge help and should have been included.

      • Pollos Hermanos

I totally never thought you did it on purpose. It’s easy to miss people when they step away from the public.

  • thom

Thank you! I was put in conversion therapy as a minor by my parents. Your work has been valued!

    • FAEN

Ugh. That must have been awful. Glad you got through it.

      • thom

        Thank you 🙂

        • FAEN

          No worries matey 😊.

        • Falconlights

          Glad you survived it!

    • RobynWatts

I’m sorry that you had to go through that experience. 😞

  • Jonathan Smith
  • Boreal

Thank you Wayne for exposing the frauds.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

    Nice shout-out for Joe.

I notice he didn’t thank LCR or any of the homocons.

    • Boreal

Because they haven’t done a thing for anyone.

      • Jonathan Smith

not true. they SURELY lined their own pockets.

        • Boreal

With their relatives money and anyone else they could bilk.

      • clay

They were great help in eliminating ex-gay torture in the US military under DADT.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Wayne, loved listening to you on WCPT and how it ended reflects poorly on them, as does your replacement. I seldom listen on my drive home anymore.

    • JoeMyGod

Wayne had me on his show several times. I didn’t know that gig had ended.

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

Joe, your segments with him must have started before my commute, so sorry I missed hearing you.

The scuttlebutt I’ve heard is that Wayne wanted to be represented by a union. Don’t know if true and on his own site he is totally professional and does not hint at anything.

His replacement (Chicago Reader reporter) will let people from the right come on and spew crap that the host often doesn’t even bother to challenge. After screaming at the radio while driving, I finally gave up. In any case, a big step backwards.

Also Wayne has an adorable dog, Doinkers. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/542844554510fe85baf191259f98f62646c4bf4bf129a74a7b78cc50d52dfb14.jpg

        • jimbo65

I too have a hard time listening to his replacement. He’ll let these loons rant unchallenged. Only after the call is let go that he’ll give a rebuttal, if any. Most times I’ll wait until the show is over and listen to Norman Goldman. You’re right that firing him reflected poorly on WCPT.

      • Speaking of the ex-gay movement, did you know about this article on the movie I Am Michael?

Be sure to read the comments as well.

  • David Walker

Thank you, Wayne. Thank you, Joe.

  • kaydenpat

This is great news. Well done!

  • Jacob

Reminds me of GMHC, APLA and SFAF, etc. stating their early goals as turning out the lights and locking the doors. Not exactly there but Besen’s contribution is measurable in lives saved. How great is that? The world is better for him.

  • JWC

sorry to see you go Job well done lets hope the”cancer” does not creep back

  • Tawreos

Sometimes an ending is a good thing, especially if the reason they were needed in the first place no longer is as big of a problem. Thanks for the great work.

  • PickyPecker

OT: While we’re at it, I’d like to personally thank Joe Jervis for all his hard work over the years on this here blog-thingie. He’s created a community and brought us together; kept us informed; spent many a long night covering elections; and has a wonderful sense of humor.
Thanks, Joe. For letting me be a part of this. You should be very proud of your creation and those who comment who add SO, so much to each posting.
Hat’s (sure, porkpie if you insist) off to YOU!! XO

    • Boreal

Also thanks for putting up with some of us, Joe (looks in mirror). This is my go to site for news.

      • Jonathan Smith
      • Chris Baker

EXACLTY! I often come here FIRST for any news. I think I discovered this site back in the Prop8 days. It’s the only site where I can read all the comments and not be angered. Very few trolls, but many diverse comments that I read–and sometimes disagree with, but I appreciate the diverse views that make me think. (i miss some of those commenters who posted a lot in the past but have disappeared for various reasons).

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

(many looking in mirror). Too late to 2nd what PP said, but you are so appreciated by me and so many.

      • whollyfool

This is where I go for news, several times a day.

    • FAEN

I love the hat. And the beard-because I’m a beard whore.

    • Falconlights

Yes, thank you so much, Joe!

  • PickyPecker

What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.

  • bkmn

We can’t do enough to thank Wayne for the immense number of hours he put in to all his work to save kids from going through a living hell. I just wish the work was done but we can do our parts by finding someone in our legislatures to sponsor a bill to end reparative therapy in our own states.

  • TheSeer

Thank you for everything you have done.

  • Ninja0980

Thank you for all your hard work in shutting down these torture chambers.

  • JT

    Say it isn’t so, Wayne!

  • M Jackson

Good on you Wayne, good on you.
Just please do not go quietly into that good night.

  • ColdCountry

To retire because your work is done is an amazing accomplishment. While I hated to see Jeremy Hooper go, I understood: he was fighting for marriage equality, and… TA DA! Truth Wins Out did fantastic work, and it’s a good thing that it’s (mostly) done. (I sure Porno Pete will miss him.)

  • Wayne also covered Michael Glatze’s bigoted ex-gay antics, as well as his eventual apology to the gay community:

  • DN

Every time the anti-gays accuse our side of ginning up bullshit so we can keep fundraising, point them to this post, and also to Freedom to Marry shutting down.
