Trump Claims Victory In SCOTUS Travel Ban Ruling

Via White House press release:

Today’s unanimous Supreme Court decision is a clear victory for our national security. It allows the travel suspension for the six terror-prone countries and the refugee suspension to become largely effective.

As President, I cannot allow people into our country who want to do us harm. I want people who can love the United States and all of its citizens, and who will be hardworking and productive.

My number one responsibility as Commander in Chief is to keep the American people safe. Today’s ruling allows me to use an important tool for protecting our Nation’s homeland. I am also particularly gratified that the Supreme Court’s decision was 9-0.

I think at this point I will take a break from all the insanity and go outside into the garden.

If kitty sits on my trees – kitty will be walking very, very oddl!

(I was lucky enough to get a piece of land that has never been farmed – and the trees that surround my house and the rest of the property are all in the 40-60ft tall variety. Red Oaks and Pecans are the primaries.)

…and either gets us Pence, a real Christian Warrior whose only argument with the Spanish Inquisition was that they were too timid.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

First of all, he clearly did not write that himself.

    • DumbHairyApe

Of course he didn’t. Had he written it it would have had the line:

“Hillary lost bigly. We won more states than there are states. YUGE win. Dems SAD. Obama colluded with Dems/Russians. T people smart.”

  • bambinoitaliano

Like we did not see this twat tweeting this alt victory from a mile away.

  • Natty Enquirer

How these people lie! The vote was 6–3 to allow part of the ban to go forward pending a hearing before the Court this fall, by which time it may be moot unless it is extended.

    • Todd20036

It’s already moot. The ban was for 90 days, which already expired.

      • Natty Enquirer

I believe the 90 days was pending because of the stay.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

None of the Fox News viewers will get that message, or even understand it if they did get it. It’s all politics by tweets and rally chants now.

    • Lazycrockett

The SC should have never agreed to take the case in the first place.

    • The_Wretched

The conservative wing usually loves “mootness” and otherwise kicking cases out on “Justiciability”” grounds. That they plainly chose to ignore it here is telegraphing.

  • The_Wretched

per curiam on an interim ruling (granting cert & mostly unwinding the TRO) is not the same thing as 9-0 on a decision. Anyone with a remedial understanding of the legal system understands this. However, this does look like SCOTUS is going to give him his travel bans regardless of the good and Constitutional reasons not to.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Nothing matters anymore. We can just start printing that on the currency as our motto, and put Trump’s face on the $1 bills, Mar-A-Lago on the back.

    • Tawreos

Remedial understanding? Why are you setting the bar so high for Trump and his ilk?

  • safari

So, in 90 days he’ll be satisfied, right?

    • Tomcat

They won’t have even heard the case by 60 days.

      • Chucktech

And, if the court follows its tradition, won’t reveal the verdict until next June.

  • BobSF_94117

I’m confused. I thought the earlier thread says they agreed to hear the case and left injunctions in place.

    • safari

The ban will go into effect for people who do not have existing relations with the US is my understanding.

      • BobSF_94117

        OK, now I’m more confused.

        πŸ™‚

        • Tomcat

They agreed to hear it but allowed the ban to go forward until then IN PART.

        • Acronym Jim

If you are from one of the countries outlined in the ban, but have a green card or other pre-existing visa, the ban will not apply to you. If you are a gay Syrian refugee seeking asylum and fleeing certain death, it does apply to you.

          • BobSF_94117

Thx. I read a longer article on the decision to take the case and its instructions. Seems odd they went with that instead of noting that the 120 days Trump said he needed to fix the vetting has passed…

      • Tomcat

I did not have relations with that country.

        • Treant

I did, twice. But it was the worst BJ since the one I got from a birthday magician with very sad eyes.

If it’s less than -23 million, we’ll know the CBO has been corrupted.

      • SoCalGal20

I think it was Chris Murphy who went to the CBO to ask if they could do 15 year numbers (they said yes) because that’s when even more significant damage kicks in which the Rs are trying to bury.

      • JCF

22 million. Still SUCKS beyond the telling of it… [As in, will KILL me.]

Mr. Trump. of course you mean only the “REICH” ones will be allowed into the country right!!!

    *Edited

    • Tomcat

      That’s REICH.

      • bsinps

        I’ll make that correction

  • IDavid

This is a total joke. All the Supreme Court decision did was make sure that green card holders would not have their lives shredded by trumps irresponsibility. In the 90 and 120 days he wanted to do his security research this could all have been done by now and dealt with. What a major waste of time and money.

    • Sporkfighter

      “buy trumps irresponsibility”

  • BostonBud

Wait a minute…I’m confused. Didn’t the Supreme Court just vote to HEAR arguments on the ban? Are you smarter than the President (it’s a new game show, everyone wins!)

  • Professor Barnhardt

    Per Ethan Klapper’s tweet:

“The Court issued a per curiam decision in Trump v. International Refugee Assistance Project, No. 16-1436. Justice Thomas dissented in part, joined by Justices Alito and Gorsuch. The case will be argued in the first oral argument session of October Term 2017.”

Those 90 days are long gone… but WINNING!!!
In the meantime, A Canadian attacked us and no ban.

    • Halou

The 90 days are long gone, this latest series of racist applause proves that the ban was never intended to be a “temporary” affair.

  • Max_1

Oh, did we mention that Russia attacked us this last year…
… WHERE’S THAT FUCKING TRAVEL BAN FROM RUSSIA???

  • Taylor

Clearly Trump does not understand that you can’t claim victory until the game is complete….we’re just a halftime.

  • Blake J Butler
  • KnownDonorDad

I feel so much safer now that refugees from countries that didn’t attack us are banned.

    • Halou

All people who come from countries where Trump doesn’t have any business interests are banned.

      • Karl Dubhe

Don’t worry, that doesn’t send everyone else on the planet any message.

        Business as usual…

  • Halou

As President, I cannot allow people into our country who want to do us harm.

Which is why he will be confirming the next Russian ambassador who is on the European sanctions list for being a threat to territorial integrity and western values, and why he is doing his damned hardest to reopen the spy dens that were shut down in December. Our founding principles are under attack and rather than use the tools at his disposal, the ones Obama left him, we have this clown saying that we’ve “got to get along well with Russia”.

And it is why his Saudi mega-donors and the Wahhabi fanatics they finance are being allowed complete freedom of movement into and out of the country. For just a few hotels, profits from which the president and his family will keep for themselves, many Americans will die. Because when Sunni sectarians attack us, of course we have to ban all Shiite Muslims who are being attacked far more severely than we are.

  • Tomcat

    Scrotum reinstates trumps ban.

  • Marty Hodas

Almost all of the countries on the ban list are failed states. I don’t think they can control border crossings. The one exception is Iran, but fuck Iran.

  • greenmanTN

I have to step away at times. This is gonna get a lot worse before it gets better. And for what it’s worth, though I admire and love Obama, he fucked up by not exposing Russian interference in the last election. The trajectory of this country just went way off course and now we all have to live with it.

People will hurt, people will die.

  • Piet

And now, of course, they will be able at long last to examine the various screening protocols (vetting) used to determine whether people from those places will be allowed to enter — something they couldn’t possibly have done while they were busy battling the courts. Lady Liberty’s torch hasn’t been extinguished. Yet.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada
  • SFBruce

I know Ethan Kapper has tweeted this decision was a per curiam decision and we don’t know exactly how the court voted, but it’s being widely reported that the decision was unanimous. From what I’ve read, the decision itself was unsigned, and Gorsuch, Alito and Thomas all partially dissented, wanting the stay to be completely lifted. We also know at least two other justices wanted the stay to be lifted with some qualifications. While it’s not hard to guess who those two other justices might be, we don’t really know, do we? And that leaves four more about whose position we don’t know at all. What’s the basis for the widespread claim that this was unanimous? Am I’m missing something.
