AUSTRALIA: Boy George Covers Village People’s YMCA In Pitch For Marriage Equality And It’s Great [VIDEO]

Australia’s Daily Telegraph reports:

As a coach on The Voice, Boy George is encouraging his artists to find a new meaning when covering iconic pop songs and it seems the Culture Club front man has been taking his own advice. The ’80s pop icon has rerecorded the Village People classic YMCA in order to shine a light on issues important to Australian youth like marriage equality, mental health and youth unemployment.

However, Boy George said that when he was initially approached by YMCA Australia to get involved, he was hesitant. “I thought absolutely not. How could you cover that song?” he said. “The thing about covering songs, you have to get inside the song and see if it works and when I started to listen to the lyrics they were weirdly revealing.” Now, after recording the song as part of the charity organisation’s new campaign, the 56-year-old loves the new, stripped back version. “I started to think, this is going to really work in my shows.”

Somehow very touching. When the curtain dropped, I shed a tear.

  • bkmn

He is looking great and sounding great. Nice to see him doing this for the Aussies.

    • Jessicagkilpatrick

my best friend’s step-mother makes $85 hourly on the computer . She has been fired from work for nine months but last month her pay check was $17089 just working on the computer for a few hours. see it here ++++++++++

  • ok, that’s a nice soothing take on a classic. well done.
And why the hell doesn’t Australia have equal marriage yet?!?
on a similar vein, what’s yall’s thoughts on this redo of You Spin me Round?

    • Rambie

It’s an interesting take to a — I hate to use the term — classic.

      • the original is one of my all time favorite songs, and this version, while done in a totally different style, really hits a home run. at least to me. (notice the HRC sticker on the above still and at 1:48.)

    • CanuckDon

This is great! I love new spins and covers on familiar tunes from the past.

Last night, I discovered a slew of “80s remixes” of current pop songs (similar to what Postmodern Jukebox does) and ended up splendidly wasting time listening and watching. This take on Rihanna actually made the song listenable!

  • TheManicMechanic

    This is downright lovely!

  • CanuckDon

Boy George’s voice is filled with so much soul and wisdom that the importance of these words brought me to tears…
“Young man, I was once in your shoes
I said, I was down and out with the blues
I felt no man cared if I were alive
I felt the whole world was so uptight”

    • Lazycrockett

His voice over the years has aged like a fine wine.

      • HZ81

I love it, too. Really is one of the truly great singers.

  • TJay229

George ROCK’S Philip Treacy like only a few can… 💗 him.!

the Voice does not g fit the face Both are wossie but do not match

      • Treant

Hey, neither does mine. You’d expect, from my slight build and elfin features, to hear a reedy tenor.

        I’m a deep, deep bass.

        • David Milley

Heh. ‘nd this old bear’s turned in a tenor in my old age. Nobody more surprised than me, what with my speaking voice in the cellar most of the time.

    • Bluto

He sounds like he has a giant butt plug inserted.

        Or drumph’s tiny dick.

      • Mrs. Councillor Nugent

        or should

    • bambinoitaliano

Awww his voice still breaking. Hey Ivanka, have your husband balls drop yet?

    • Mrs. Councillor Nugent

    • Ernest Endevor

      This is the real Jared.

    • bambinoitaliano

Hey Another_Steve, looks like you need a duct tape to fuck your twink. Can’t be having the neighbor calling the po po thinking there is an illegal slaughter house operating next door.

      • Treant

Kee-rist, this one would squeak when you fuck him.

        • David Milley

          A slaughterhouse for mimmoths?

    • Ninja0980

      He’s alive!

I hope this works (a reply to the above tweet):

    • Pat

So does a Chatty Cathy doll with about as much meaning, apologies to Chatty Cathy dolls and their owners everywhere.

  • Ish

I love his mature voice but I don’t get this. It’s a song about cruising for sex.

You are right but that is lost on most breeders.

          Hello, Pat!

          Thank you!

          • Pat

Hello Bill! Never heard this one before, but dang if it didn’t fit the occasion!

  • bambinoitaliano

I quite enjoy this French contestant on The Voice France.

    • prixator

Thanks for showing me the entrance to a rabbit hole!

That was very good. I also liked Lucie singing “It’s a Man’s World”. And Mika is one of the judges, along with another very good-looking guy named Matt Pokora, who Google or Wiki did not reveal if he is gay or not.

  • SoCalGal20

OT but should be a good read. Buzzfeed just posted a new investigative report.

The Man Who Knew Too Much

His nuclear research helped a judge determine that former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko had been assassinated — likely on Putin’s orders. Just months after the verdict, the scientist himself was found stabbed to death with two knives. Police deemed it a suicide, but U.S. intelligence officials suspect it was murder.

  • SoCalGal20

WaPo says Senate Dems are pareparing to go scorched earth over AHCA.

    • bambinoitaliano

What can they do? I am seriously asking.

      • Boreal

They can slow the senate’s business down to a crawl or stop using procedural tactics.

“The Senate operates under what are called “unanimous
consent” agreements. If Senate Democrats withhold their consent, the routine functioning of the body — from committee hearings to routine floor votes — could grind to an immediate halt.

“It would stop everything in the Senate and effectively
shut it down,” said Josh Huder, a congressional scholar at Georgetown’s
Government Affairs Institute. “If they go down this road, things could
get pretty slow and ugly in the Senate.”

        • Ninja0980

          Works for me.
If nothing else, it will stop the freak show of judges Trump aka Republicans aka the Federalist Society have nominated.

        • bambinoitaliano

Can’t the Repulicunts use the Nuclear option with this bill?

          • billbear1961

No, it has nothing to do with the number of votes needed to get something passed, bambino.

          • billbear1961

I suppose they might be able to change the procedural rules, but if they do that, it’s DONE, and will affect THEM in future, too.

          • bambinoitaliano

Sigh, these old white men lives for now. I don’t know if we have a future when and if we finally rid of them.

          • Boreal

Probably but if they do, that double edged sword will cleave them in two once they are out of power.

          • Ninja0980

Same with judges.. which is something Democrats HAD to do.

        • Treant

So, basically, the Senate becomes as useless as when Obama was in office.

          I can live with that.

    • Boreal
    • details/link please.
you gotta give me my fix man, i NEED MY FIX!!

  • Derrick Johns

wow. George is only three years younger than me. He looks great!

All Joy did was point out Scalise’s record asshole.
No one wished harm on him but the harm he caused to so many people isn’t going away because he got shot.

    • billbear1961

It’s very revealing that this creature thinks that if you expose a fascist’s record, people might conclude he (or she) “deserves to die.”

Why would that be so, unless the record reveals the legislator supports truly evil policies?

    • Gustav2

They are really going after Joy.

      • Pat

I just blocked half her mentions, and 99% of them were the usual “Christian, Patriot, Proud Vet MAGA” meaning they’re probably foreign or Mercer bots in overdrive.

The right doesn’t like having their own voting records blow up in their faces as spectacularly as this did. I am very sorry Scalise was shot by that lunatic, no one deserves that, but the attempt to shut down discussion based on his voting record is a sign that they know they’re backed into a logical corner and the viciousness of the attacks on Joy proves it.

We shouldn’t mention that Officer Griner was a married lesbian because of the old song and dance – her race and orientation have nothing to do with her performance. And yet Scalise’s voting record would have prevented her from being married.

We shouldn’t bring up the ACA even though the damage from assault rifles is devastating and Rep Scalise will be in and out of hospitals for the rest of his life, now a pre-existing condition. He was part of the keg party on the WH lawn laughing after signing that bill to take away our coverage while exempting his. But we have to shut up about this because he’s still recovering. And don’t mention how this illustrates perfectly that someone can develop a pre-existing condition in the blink of an eye.

And finally, don’t bring up gun laws or assault rifles or a man who was arrested for domestic abuse being able to procur one. Blame the left for violence, blame the Sandy Hook parents who speak out, blame everyone except the ones in Congress who continually make it easier and easier to put military weapons out there, now even to the mentally ill.

Like I say, I do feel sorry for Scalise. He didn’t deserve to be shot, and violence is not the answer but a hell of a lot of Americans lives are impacted by his and his party’s decisions in congress. Sarah Palin put those cross hairs on Gabby Gifford’s district. Deflecting to blame the left is their last pathetic defense against their chickens who came home to roost against one of their own.

        *Sorry about the rant*

        • Lazycrockett

Joy and Joan Walsh has been taking a lot of heat last week. They handle it with pose and grace.

        • -M-

Remember to report those accounts to twitter before blocking them. I don’t know how it works through the web interface but the mobile client makes it pretty easy to report abuse, threats or bigotry and select a few illustrative tweets.

          • Pat

Good point. I automatically report the ones with threats but she has bots or whatever coming out of the wall the other day, attacking. I imagine it was all orchestrated somewhere. Twitter needs to do a better job filtering out bot accounts and multiple accounts with the same IP.

  • Like BUTTAH!!!!!

  • netxtown

Somehow I hope this makes its way to our youth so that they know there IS a place to go. Suicide is not the answer…

  • Natty Enquirer

Nice timbre, but the vibrato’s getting away from him.

    • Lakeview Bob

  • fahvel

    that was absolutely wonderful. Thanks

  • Gigi

    Still amazing!!

  • Reality.Bites

See that’s what I hate about gay activists. They’re not content to be ourselves, but have to co-opt and pervert straight institutions!

I mean, Victor Willis himself insists there was nothing gay about the Village People songs. We have our own music, why take straight music.

For example there’s that nice Bruce Springsteen. Why couldn’t the Boy give us his version of Born in the USA, truly a gay anthem that trancends borders.

(This has absolutely nothing to do with with the video. But when I thought of Village People music finally being used for us, onpenly, I thought of all the pretence about the lyrics_ Let’s face it, in novels and old movies, staying at the YMCA wasn’t wasn’t fun at all. It meant you were down on your luck. Not desperate, but not thriving either. It meant you were travelling on a strict budget or couldn’t afford an apartment. And much as I enjoy hanging out with all the boys, and locker rooms and gyms – I’d never stay anywhere where I had to share a bathroom with strangers. Odd, that, now that I think of it. I have no problem using public washrooms. Nor do I have a problem with using locker room showers, open or private. So why does the thought of doing it in a place where I’m also sleeping, squick me out?)

  • Reality.Bites

This is beautiful… but is not just about marriage equality. It’s part of a program of the YMCA in Australia that they describe thusly:

The YMCA believes in the power of young people. The problem is, the voices of young people are rarely heard. We want to change that.

For starters, we’re shining a light on three issues which need fresh thinking; marriage equality, youth unemployment and youth mental health.

    We’re asking Australia…Why Not?

It’s 2017 and some Australians still can’t marry the person they love…Why Not?

When there are no jobs for a career you’ve spend years studying for…Why Not?

No one is screaming that one in four young Australians has a mental health condition…Why Not?

  • Bj Lincoln

How is this about equal marriage? I see a gay man singing a song by a straight group about the YMCA perceived to be gay and a gay song for years. The YMCA and Boy George did a great job explaining what the Y is all about thru a great remake but I just do not see what it has to do with marriage.

    • Reality.Bites

      See my post

  • John Kusters

    That was quite nice. Thanks!
