Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross Orders LGBT Protections Reinstated To Employment Policy Statement

The Washington Post reports:

The Commerce Department has removed language from its annual equal opportunity statement barring discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, prompting a protest from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists. In a statement Thursday afternoon, the Commerce Department said the statement “was never intended to change the policy or exclude any protected categories.”

“The Department of Commerce policy remains that we do not discriminate on the basis of transgender status and sexual orientation. Department employees will continue to enjoy the fullest extent of the protections of all the non-discrimination laws,” it said. “Secretary [Wilbur] Ross has directed the department to reissue the policy statement to address any concerns and prevent misinterpretation.”

Only when pulled by their tales.

        • AJ Drew

          aha!

    • Blake Jordan

Honestly, I would not have expected them to change it, just because of the news coverage…

It is not as if all the news coverage of the other negative stuff done by / under Donnie has gotten them to change it.

      • j.martindale

I am happily surprised by this change. I am willing to give credence to the idea that some underling decided to be cute about this, tried to deny LGBT protections, and when the boss heard it, he fixed it. Gays are enjoying the luxury of an improved status where overt discrimination can now engender blowback.

We can only hope through rose coloured glasses …

To a degree you have a valid point for sure, but the Haters are still in charge of Dodge City at the moment.

  • Do Something Nice

Well, that’s more than I expected from the Trump administration. I wonder if the new polls showing Trump in the toilet have anything to do with this?

  • netxtown

donnie is gonna be up his ass about this for sure.

Eh, Deadbeat Donnie does not give a crap about anything other continuing to enrich himself and his kleptocratic demon seeds.

      • northern_neighbour

You would have to go and spoil things by injecting REALITY into the situation!

    • I very much doubt that Trump cares one way or the other.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Equal to all of Trump’s cronies first denying, then admitting to meeting Russians after the meetings were reported in the press.

Ooopsies is not an acceptable governmental process.

    • Rambie

It’s un-Trumpian to swap back though, usually they double down.

I wonder if the “new” policy was written by a RWNJ underling and once the omission came to light is the reason for the quick back track.

A lying liar who lies! He just got caught, is all. Please.

Plus they are in flight correction mode to improve their personal “optical pathways.”

This of course, As Mueller ramps up his operation to see what is hidden there, under the Dark Side of the Force. Some of the nasty critters are starting to skitter …. a bit … (maybe … it’s still way way too soon to say).

Perhaps we should credit the married Lesbian police officer who just saved Scalise’s life on Wednesday evening.

      • Joseph Miceli

I don’t know if you’re old enough to remember the gay man who saved Gerald Ford . We do our duty and save the people Who hate us . Too bad THEY (Republicans) can’t do their duty and apply the constitution equally to the people they hate .

        • AndyHardy

Just for the record, Gerald Ford didn’t hate us and was probably the most gay-friendly (tolerant?) Republican president in history. He is quoted as saying “I have always believed in an inclusive policy in welcoming gays and others into the party…I think they ought to be treated equally. Period.” He also lent his name to a gay-straight alliance (“The Republican Unity Party”) in 2002 which makes him, to my knowledge, the ONLY president to join a gay group to date.

          • Joseph Miceli

Thank you. I didn’t know that. No wonder the Republicans seem to forget him.

          • AndyHardy

He was from that moderate Rockefeller Republican era that is long gone with the wind!

          • Joseph Miceli

Back when they still had a sense of decency? That was before Newt and his degradation of our government. Truly, if I had one person that I could point at and say…”you are responsible for the divide we have now” it would be Newt Fucking Gingrich! I loathe the man more than even Bush 2 or Trump.

    Someone sure stepped in it!

    • HZ81

If it was never intended to be removed, why was it? The rest was worded almost identically to the previous administration’s employment policy.

      • northern_neighbour

As bkmn notes nearby here, the ‘CHRISTERS’ go through all rubric from the Obama years line by line to EXPUNGE all “privileges” extended to us LGBT, the laws that otherwise are guaranteed to straight people as “human rights” and Constitutional liberties and freedoms.

      • JW Swift

Indeed. Copy-and-paste is a LOT easier than editing to remove bits and pieces from within the wording.

        • popebuck1

It’s at times like these you really learn to appreciate Obama’s habit of being really careful and thorough and doing everything by the book. You gotta know he made it as difficult as possible to reverse stuff like this.

  • Duck

Notice that statement about employees enjoying the “fullest extent of all the non-discrimination laws”? That is their out. They get decent people off their case for dropping the statement about non-discrimination against us damned dirty faggots, but they can still fire, harass-into-quitting, god-bother and generally be their bigot selves cause as we here know, THERE AREN’T ANY NON-DISCRIMINATION LAWS COVERING SEXUAL ORIENTATION OR GENDER IDENTITY!

    • That’s why it’s important to have it written into department policy.

  • What’s interesting is that the departments are not following Trump’s lead in “disappearing” policies concerning LGBT equality. He ignored Pride Month, State and the Pentagon made point of observing it, Labor and now Commerce are adhering to Obama’s non-discrimination policies.

As for why that language got left out of the original restatement of the Commerce department’s policy: Maybe some underling deliberately left it out and whoever was tasked with reviewing it before publication didn’t notice because we’re invisible to this administration.

  • Cuberly

“…Ross has directed the department to reissue the policy statement to address any concerns…”

  • abqdan

“I didn’t think they’d notice… damn. Now I’d better pretend it was just a typo. After all, anyone could accidentally delete those words from our policy statement. We’ll have to find other ways to discriminate.”

  • SDG

    Good!

  • ECarpenter

It may very well have been an underling seeing his or her chance to remove our protections under cover of Trumpism, and assuming that Ross would go along with it. In any case, it’s good to see Ross acting correctly here. Give him credit where he deserves credit.

  • cleos_mom

“The Department of Commerce policy remains that we do not discriminate
on the basis of transgender status and sexual orientation.”

Sounds uneasily close to the mechanical/ironic “we remain committed” but I hope I’m reading something into it that isn’t there.

  • Richard B

Keep in mind, the subtle and surgical removal of LGBTQ protections from the Labor Departments previous antidiscrimination policy was deliberate and done on purpose.
If no one had noticed the surgical subtle change, the bad guys would have gotten away with it.
Our nefarious opponent, Tony Perkins (FRC) and other religious conservatives are lobbying the Trump administration to de-gay all aspects of the government that were implemented during the Obama and other previous administrations.
Fortunately when the changes to the Labor Department’s anti discrimination policy started going viral, Wilbur Ross quickly backed off before the blowback became a politically unsustainable liability https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c85e73011577b209a4f9a34a019982a9a71f668337fc99773beecc6be2d600a1.jpg .

Nobody had “misunderstood” the actions OR intentions of Donald J. Trump, and Party.

The Departmant of Health & Human Services also removed polling requirements for LGBT Seniors from their policies, and they lied saying that no changes had occurred, until they were caught in said lie.
