Scottish Episcopal Church Votes To Allow Same-Sex Couples To Marry In Church, First In UK [VIDEO]

The BBC reports:

The Scottish Episcopal Church has voted to allow gay couples to marry in church. It makes it the first major Christian church in the UK to allow same-sex marriages.

The vote to amend canon law on marriage, removing the stipulation that it is between a man and a woman, was carried by the Synod in Edinburgh. It means that gay Christians from any Anglican Church can now ask to be married in a Scottish Episcopal Church.

Clergy who wish to officiate at gay marriages will have to “opt-in”. The church said this meant that those who disagreed with gay marriage would be protected and not have to act against their conscience.

The Episcopal Church’s Bishop of Edinburgh, The Right Reverend Dr John Armes, said: “I am very pleased for the couples who can now have their relationships recognised by the church and blessed by God.

  • another_steve

Episcopalians and Catholics are — in general — okay with same-sex marriage and queer things in general.

Not universally, but for the most part.

    • JCF

Um, Episcopalians and Catholics are WORLDS apart, *officially* (unofficially, RCs statistically more resemble Episcopalians—but only because they DISAGREE w/ their bishops. Unlike Episcopalians, where bishops are for equality, too.)

      • another_steve

Progressive Catholics (I’m married to one) differentiate between “Church hierarchy” and “The People of the Church.”

        Often, very different things, those.

        • Tor

But it’s the hierarchy that gets the final say. It’s still a monarchy.

        • NZArtist

It’s almost like people just make up whatever suits their own preconceptions of what their imaginary friend wants. Funny, huh?

        • Adam King

But who do they give their money to?

          • Lars Littlefield

I give mine to the ACLU. They don’t ask for imaginary things of me.

          • another_steve

Fair question. My man gives not a cent to the Catholic Church hierarchy. Not one penny. All his financial church-related contributions go to LGBT Catholic organizations working for social justice here in the states and around the world.

There are a bunch of such organizations, you know.

Joe chooses not to mention them here on this blog, but there are a bunch of them.

        • Reality.Bites

Yeah, just like John McCain distinguishes between his party and his country.

The Catholic Church is evil. And people who support it in any way are supporting its evil. Same thing with being a Republican. No – there are no decent Republicans and there are no decent Catholics. To be part of such monstrous evil is to be evil.

          • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

I get it, but it’s a bit of a stretch. Ever been to a Catholic Cancer Hospice? The nuns and priests who work there, every day of their lives, are true angels on this earth.

          • Lars Littlefield

I prefer Buddhist nuns. Those I’ve had the good fortune to work with have impressed me more than any other humans on the planet. They make Catholic nuns seem crass and small minded.

  • JT

The only thing is: kilts will be required.

  • JCF

I don’t know if the video above says so, but the Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth, above, is openly gay.

This has been a LONG time coming—congrats, Scottish Episcopalians! Your “daughter” church here in the States, welcomes you to God’s Own Equality! 😀

        • Bluto

Less than possession of a joint.

          • NZArtist

Ya. For possession of a joint you get thirty years. For Treason you get a cabinet position in the Trump administration.

          • stevenj

Where would one get a thirty year sentence for a joint in the US? In Calif It would bring a fine of up to $100 (since 2010) and $0 starting next year (legalized). Are you referring to a federal crime?

        • Lars Littlefield

Usually death. They executed Juilus and Ethel Rosenberg, and Benedict Arnold. But sometimes they can impose a sentence similar to a parking ticket.

“Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and …

All that said, I was relieved to find (on a Colbert CBS clip) that “Fat Pratt” is simply not staying away forever.

And I appreciated Chris’ tips on how you can melt ice cream and use it as a “sauce” for stlll-frozen ice cream.

I also watched a group of Buzzfeed idiots trying to do “Pratt transformations”. One guy stuck to salmon for 30 days. He got sick. Wow, ya think? I wouldn’t exclusively eat salmon for 30 days (these days) to literally save my life, what with the destruction of our waters and all.

“Feelings are running high over the Obamacare repeal and replace vote.
Republicans are getting confronted by angry voters at town halls, and some are even seeing that rage spill over to the streets. In Tennessee, one woman was so angry at a lawmaker’s vote in favor of the health care
bill that she tried to run him off the road, according to police.

After Rep. David Kustoff visited the University of Tennessee at Martin on Monday, Wendi Wright started tailing his car. Wright was so aggressive while driving that at one point the lawmaker and those in the car with him were “in fear of being forced off” the road, the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department said. So they decided to change course and go to a friend’s house that was nearby. Wright got out of her car and confronted the lawmaker.”

    • Treant

They told Lord Tinyhands Dampnut that Tweeting would send him to jail…probably a true statement.

However, the sun is down in Washington, consequently, he’s starting to sundown syndrome, and we should get massive Twat from him shortly. If not now, tomorrow when Ivanka disappears into her cave for the sabbath or whatever.

OT: House today voted to stop banking regulations that were put in place after they put our asses into the biggest recession in many years.
Where is the outrage they showed for Hillary and wall street banks during the campaign. They were very upset that she would stop banking regulations.

    • Sam_Handwich

won’t they need 60 votes in the senate?

      • Tomcat

Who says there are not enough Democrats bought by the banks?

        • Lazycrockett

This was a great scheme by the banks so of course they want it again. Steal as much money as possible, sink the economy, and then get bailed out by the government. Even better no one goes to jail.

          • Tomcat

Did you catch the end of Chris Hayes’ show today? He was interviewing a Rethug Congressman literally named Banks (re Comey), and when the interview ended, Hayes got in a little dig at the Congressman: [para.] “Thank you, Congressman Banks. • David Walker

OT, but the thread seems to be going this way. I’m watching Rachel, and her A bloc pretty much laid out 45’s defense (“I didn’t do it”) vs Comey, his memo, his senior staff, and maybe the tapes. The recordings have probably been destroyed by this time (my thinking).

    • Jerry Kott

I don’t believe there were ever any tapes.

      • Lazycrockett

Even if there were, they are deleted.

      • Trump has a longstanding reputation for surveilling people, up to and including having digital recorders running under stacks of paper.

        • Jerry Kott

I believe he is bluffing in this circumstance.

      • Karl Dubhe

I don’t believe that Trump can prove that there are no tapes. Of course, the burden of proof is on those who say that there are tapes.

Didn’t Trump suggest that tapes might exist. 🙂

        • Jerry Kott

He said that “Comey better hope there are no tapes”. I believe he was bluffing which is all T45 has left. T45 will be looking for wiggle room to get out of this. Tapes existing only helps Comey.

If they get a second EU referendum, why can’t we have a do over???? 🙁

      • Our election rules are more strict in terms of scheduling and re-dos.

        • David Walker

I know you’re right and I agree. Nevertheless, our laws are pretty strict, too, and they seem to be pretty disregarded still, even after consequences are finally starting to show up on the horizon. I do so wish we could through the tantrum-throwing baby out with the bathwater and do as much of a reboot as is possible. I think we are owed that. But you’re right, Becca, I know that.

  • David Walker

We also have the lovely, honorable representative Ryan going to bat for 45 with the old favorite, “He’s new to the job. How would he be able to know everything?” There is such a thing as curiosity, things like “what goes into this job, what do I need to understand about the three branches, who can say ‘no’ to me?”

    • safari

Ignorance of the law is not a viable defense.

      • David Walker

However, after our introduction to his lawyer today, it is a possibility. How does one allegedly “smart” lawyer make such huge (as in yuuuge) mistakes?

    • Lazycrockett

      • BobSF_94117

So help me understand if I have this in a simple nutshell:

President Clinton meets AG Lynch on an airplane with no one even privy to what was said, and Republicans then – Investigations! Conspiracy! Impeachable! Scandalous!

President Trump FIRES the head of the FBI and SAYS, in his own friggin words, that he did it BECAUSE OF RUSSIA INVESTIGATION, and Republicans now – Her emails! Trump only said he “hopes” you’ll let it go, that doesn’t mean anything! Her emails! He’s new to this! Her emails!

This was by design, with the president’s tacit consent. R. McMaster; Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson; and Mr. Mattis.

Alan Bennett wrote a series of monologues called “Talking Heads.” It featured several outstanding actresses (Patricia Routledge, Eileen Atkins, Julie Walters, Thora Hird), including Maggie in this extraordinary installment. It’s 45 minutes, but bookmark it. It is an incredible marriage between writer and actor, with Maggie as a vicar’s wife. Tissue advisory applies.

The Liberal Democrat and the DUP?

Not the Lib Dem with Con, that’s for sure. What tiny lot are left of them won’t make that mistake again.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

Sturgeon (SNP) said before the election that her party would be willing to join a coalition with more progressive parties. I assume she meant either Labour or the LibDems but not the Tories.

The fact is despite everything that is happening tonight, Labour is not likely to come out on top.
Perhaps if they had someone else besides Corbyn they would have but with him at the helm..nope.

Interesting point by Democrat Martin Heinrich about Comey’s conversations with Trump

” I think the most interesting thing we learned was just the pressure that one feels when you’re alone with the president of the United States, whether it’s in the green room or someplace else in the White House. I think getting that perspective was important.

We also learned that the president never took the opportunity to say I’m concerned about what the Russians did in the election; what do you recommend we do to make sure this never happens again? So there was lots of concern about his exposure and about Michael Flynn and about the administration, but there was literally no concern about what the Russians did in our election and how we could prevent that from ever happening again. “

    • safari

      Donald’s ego is always first.

    • worstcultever

The garbage culture novelty joke fake president didn’t say any of that because he’s A FUCKING LOWLIFE CRIMINAL.

Comey’s notes and reflections today on his interactions with Dumpy are like Costand’s testimony about Bill Cosby. Nobody expects this kind of jaw-dropping cynical predation from fellow humans.

    • safari

Thankfully it isn’t winner take all like our backass system.

      • Karl Dubhe

Yes it is. It’s first past the post, but with more parties.

        • safari

I thought PM required a majority decision?

          • Karl Dubhe

That’s once the election is over. Parliament is basically your house of representatives. Well, your house of reps was based on parliament, whatever.

Once the election is over the largest party forms a government, and then they rule. The PM is almost an elected dictator. If it’s a minority government then the PM can’t rule as effectively.

          • safari

I guess I’m coming from the idea that we don’t even have the possibility of a minority government because our system designed without any conception of parties makes that very unlikely to happen for any long period of time.

          • Karl Dubhe

When you formed, neither nation really had political parties. That was a 19th century thing. IIRC.

          • safari

We did, we just didn’t want to talk about it. Our Federalist / Anti-Federalist papers from the constitutional era lay the foundation.

We’ve run with 3+ parties for nearly a century in Canada with first past the post. Some provinces had proportional representation, but they didn’t like doing the math.

          • Blake J Butler

Not to mention that even if you had a majority in the legislature, you would have to put up a fair and balanced media, take down Fox, but still have to contend with fake news sites that people in the rustbelt eat up as truth.

They truly will have to suffer beyond their worst nightmares before even a chance they would even consider the thought of supporting democrats.

It’s not that we’re failing, they’re not listening, they’re that ignorant and gullible, and they are deliberately being created in assembly line fashion as future GOP voters with little movement of a life outside of the one they’re living.

          • Blake J Butler

Clinton i think is gone, as a surrogate i can see her. Warren needs to be in the senate, Biden is too old, and way too late, and Bernie is too old, a purist who doesn’t work with democrats, only supports them if they meet his purist standards, and bitching and moaning about miniscule issues when progress from over the past 100 years is at stake with people that could give a flying fuck about civil rights, regulations, and appointees.

          • Lazycrockett

Biden has never caught fire with the primary voters. Both times he ran he fizzled. Plus the media would love to constantly bring up his past, present and future gaffes.

          • houstonray

—— “Prosecutor Jennifer Solari says investigators seized a notebook from Winner’s house in Augusta, Georgia, and in it, Winner made references about traveling to the Middle East. At one point she wrote, “I want to burn the White House down … find somewhere in Kurdistan to live. Haha.”

Solari cautioned that prosecutors were not trying to link Winner to terrorism.

“The government is not in any way suggesting the defendant has become a jihadist or that she is a Taliban sympathizer,” Solari told the judge. ——-

      • TuuxKabin

Something about a fried egg on her fore head. A lil’ early in the season and that’s what happens.

      • Lazycrockett

Honestly I think she saw her opportunity for celebrity and like her name went for it.

    • I credit her attempted idealism, a little…but sounds like she’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer based on what she thought she could do with a brand new TS/SCI clearance rating.

I know a bit about such systems:
      – They track when you access files and folders
      – They track when you copy or print confidential items
      – Those copies and prints both will have unique identifiers to trace them back to you, the person who copied or printed the file
      – If in a sensitive position with an active TS/SCI rating, if the system notes you seem to be doing something you shouldn’t, the activity is flagged
      – Once flagged, they’ll get warrants and look at all of your communications
      – And finally, this silly young woman used the public internet to talk to the Intercept’s reporters

On top of everything else, the matter she leaked was an item of news interest, but not really as-yet vital public interest. This is why, for example, see evidence of a crime and a coverup — like, say, torture being authorized? It’s moral to leak the info, but it needs to be done knowing one could go to jail for it anyway. Leak a report about the NSA’s findings about Russians attempting to hack voting registration systems? First of all, not news. Secondly, leaking the detailed report put ‘means and methods’ at risk, therefore potentially making it harder for the NSA and other U.S. intelligence agencies to counter the next Russian effort.

In other words, there’s a critical difference between whistleblowing and just leaking. The Pentagon Papers? Whistleblowing. Abu Ghraib? Whistleblowing. This? Leaking for what purpose? Attention?

    • JCF

I salute that she stayed in the USA to take responsibility for her actions (I hope she can make political points in her trial!), unlike that Russia-Quisling coward Snowden.

If he runs against Cuomo, will be even more fun.

        • Leo

The Dems are trying to win back the State House. With Cuomo’s numbers even moving above Schumer in some polls the party wouldn’t recover from the faultlines that would result from that, imho. Can’t stand Cuomo’s corrupt ass, don’t get me wrong, but the timing’s not great right now.

          • Ninja0980

I know but on a state level, Cuomo is hurting more then he’s helping most of all with his support of DINOS that allow Republicans to control our State Senate.

IIRC, the Emperorship is pretty much a symbolic position and fortunately there’s a Crown Prince. I think the Emperor is basically doing a Prince Phillip.

    • billbear1961

Just heard the news on the BBC!

    • Lazycrockett

Must be one helluva cultural shift for a nation that less than 100 years ago thought the Emperor was an actual god.

      • billbear1961

As there has been a shift HERE, with “conservatives,” now neo-Nazis, treating a demented tyrant as a god and selling their country out to a murderous regime in Russia!

    • Lars Littlefield

I imagine the responsibility of being regarded a living god is rather burdensome. So, it makes sense that Akihito and his wife might like some personal time off in Bora Bora . . . maybe long walks along the tree-lined boulevards of Paris in the fall, maybe take in a bull fight or an opera at Liceu.

    • Max_1

And now the debate resumes about the daughter…
… Why not his brother? Akihito is but the Heir of their father, no? It would seem it would be wiser to go back to the succession line to the father and see if there are other male offspring before skipping generations and searching the grandchildren.

      • Moebym Reborn

It’s too bad that the law to allow females to accede to the throne was shelved when the wife of the Crown Prince’s brother had a son. The timing was awfully convenient.

It’s also kind of stupid that the imperial family still must kick out princesses for marrying commoners. It puts such a heavy burden on the male members to marry and carry out duties.

Oh, and the succession from brother to brother hasn’t worked so well for the royal family of Saudi Arabia. You’re old before you even get to become king.

    • Lars Littlefield

How is it possible that Hannity has not been dispatched to the world of non people, kicked out of the public eye, totally humiliated, and unable to even find work as a radio repairman in Pierre, SD? FOX would do better to tun his time slot over to retired military to host The UFO Show. It would be more credible.

MATT 19: 12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

MATT 23: 13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

MATT 25: 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

I was hoping to see a blog from JMG on the second biggest news of the day: The Tories in Britain did not win an outright majority in the “snap” election. Theresa May may not be long in Downing Street. And Brexit is in trouble.

    • Lazycrockett

Scroll down, there is plenty to feast upon.

OT: Is this good news? I am not familiar with the drug in question.

“The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday asked a drug company to remove its opioid pain medication from the market, the first time the agency has made such a request because of the public health consequences of abuse.

The agency concluded after an extensive review of Endo Pharmaceuticals’ Opana ER that the “benefits of the drug may no longer outweigh its risks.” The company reformulated the drug in 2012 to make it more difficult to snort, but the FDA said that move actually led to more injections — and a major HIV outbreak.”

“we may never” should be changed to ” We refuse to ever”

      • Yeah, they don’t WANT to get to the bottom of this.

        • billbear1961

A country–a people–who just LET baldfaced crimes go on right in front of their eyes, who respect the “authority” of CRIMINALS, get EXACTLY what they DESERVE.

We have the numbers–with large and sustained demonstrations–to FORCE them to comply with the law and HOLD him ACCOUNTABLE.

Ultimately, if he isn’t held accountable, it WILL be OUR fault, because we lack the WILL to FIGHT and DEFEND this REPUBLIC!!

We aren’t nearly as helpless as the talking heads WANT us to BELIEVE!!

This cannot WAIT until 2018: if this coup–this obstruction–continues, if it isn’t STOPPED and PUNISHED, interference in FUTURE elections will be even more BRAZEN than it was in 2016!!

    • billbear1961

ENORMOUS and UNRELENTING pressure–from the press, from the Democrats, from the public–MUST be put on them, or they will just continue to PRETEND there’s no problem, and Trump WILL get away with his CRIMES.

      It is THAT simple.

Ironically, what this means in practical terms might be a so-called “hard Brexit” deal or no deal at all, which would be very “hard” indeed. It could be especially bad news for maintaining an open border in Ireland if the Tories are forced to go into a coalition with the DUP to form a government.

      • billbear1961

They don’t need to form a coalition–that would, most likely, mean having to appoint some DUPs as ministers! What seems more likely is a Con minority, held up by DUP votes (which, yes, would mean doing some of what they want, in return).

DUP has said the price of their support will be a SOFT Brexit, TLD. They won’t support a hard exit. At least, that’s what I’m reading right now.

In such a shaky minority position, it would take only a handful of dissenting Tories or DUPs to defeat a hard Brexit.

Farage has said he thinks there may BE no Brexit now:

        https://twitter.com/Nigel_Farage/status/873009050182721540

        • William

Nigel Farage should be deported to a Soviet gulag.

          • That_Looks_Delicious

I think he was hoping for Mar-A-Lago.

UKIP was the biggest loser in today’s vote, down over 10%. Zero seats.

          • William

Mar-a-lago is infested with Zika mosquitoes this time of year. The right sort of people are in Nice or Sochi this time of year.

        • That_Looks_Delicious

DUP wants a soft Brexit? Interesting.

May’s (or her successor’s) bargaining position is certainly extremely weakened now.

          • billbear1961

Remember that while England and Wales voted to leave, NI and Scotland voted to remain.

          • billbear1961

I now read–have found online–that they favour a HARD Brexit, which makes more sense, as they are nasty rightists.

I was surprised when I read a tweet that said they wanted a soft Brexit.

Assuming what I’m reading NOW is right, the earlier statement was mistaken; but you KNOW what the internet is like: contradictory statements are EVERYWHERE.

We get articles all the time that tell us ONE thing one day, and a couple days later the exact OPPOSITE.

We’ll know soon what their position is.

          • billbear1961

Aaaannd a reporter on the BBC just said DUP want a “softer” Brexit!

May has reached an agreement with them so that she can form a government. She will see the Queen very soon today to ask for permission to proceed.

Seems it will not be a FORMAL coalition.

Well, that means a minority government, then.

    • I began calling him that the day he asked Russia to hack America’s electoral system on his behalf.

    • billbear1961

He HAS betrayed this country–he IS a TRAITOR!!

He wants the investigations stopped so that he can HIDE his and his team’s GUILT.

If he had nothing to fear, he and his people would cooperate FULLY with the investigators, AND he would RELEASE his TAX RETURNS!!

I’m so SICK of this goddamned FARCE!!

There is no doubt at all that he’s guilty of obstruction!!

Subpoena his tax returns, NOW, Mueller!!

The Democrats should be calling for their release EVERY DAY, and pursuing Trump in the court of public opinion DAILY on the grounds that he has OBVIOUSLY obstructed JUSTICE!!

If you let him get away with THIS, it will only EMBOLDEN him and his henchmen, and there WILL be WORSE to come!!

OT: For those that are interested, one of my youtube faves, Crash Course. If you subscribe to youtube it’s a channel worth subscribing to.

Not going to confess how many times I had to watch it, but I think I finally get what a Turing Machine is.

That was a lot of info presented quite quickly. I actually thought I understood the Turing Machine and the Turing Test, but watching that video I suddenly wandered into ones and zeros and heard the Beatles singing, “I say high, you say low, You say why, and I say I don’t know!”

    • AmeriCanadian

The world did not deserve Alan Turing. He was a veritable genius who would have continued producing contributions beyond our imagination. He was destroyed by indescribable lunacy (there truly are no words).

Speaking of Scots, the only Tory who could be said to have had a reasonably good night was the leader of the Scottish Tories, Ruth Davidson, who cemented her party’s 2016 performance in the Scottish elections and her position as a possible Tory leader… some time in the future (she doesn’t have a seat in the Westminster Parliament).

Here she is on polling day with her fiancee.

French legislative elections (first round) are this Sunday. Polls predict Macron “landslide”.

Macron’s Republic On the Move (LREM) party was seen getting 360 to 390 seats in the lower house of parliament, far more than the 289 necessary for an absolute majority, the poll for LCP television showed.

The conservative party and its allies were seen winning between 125 and 140 seats, the Socialists 20 to 30 and the leftist France Unbowed party 15 to 25.

The far-right National Front was expected to win 8 to 18 seats.
