POLAND: Thousands March In Warsaw Pride [VIDEO]

Deutsche Welle reports:

The 17th annual ‘Equality Parade’ took place as Poland’s conservative government continues to oppose civil unions for same-sex couples. Organizers put the number at 50,000, while the police said 13,000 attended the parade, with 40 foreign embassies, including those of France and the US, expressing their support.

The parade was intended to “draw attention to the rights of LGBT people, fight discrimination and promote acceptance of same-sex unions,” with people also marching in support of people with disabilities, religious minorities other marginalized groups, the organizers said.

Poland’s constitution is one of seven in the EU to ban gay marriage and the country is one of six in the 28-member bloc not to allow same-sex civil unions. The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party in Poland came to power in late 2015 on a ticket of promoting traditional Polish values, family and Catholic traditions.

  • Capritaur

    I’m suddenly craving kielbasa.

  • Acronym Jim

“Organizers put the number at 50,000, while the police said 13,000 attended the parade..”

There is usually a discrepancy between estimates, but wow; that’s quite a disconnect between organizer and police estimates.

    • LesbianTippingHabits

This is standard practice, both for organizers and police.

That’s why, many years ago, following the Million Man March, Congress prohibited the National Park Service from providing crowd estimates.

Organizers, or anyone else, seeking to estimate crowds are thus free to hire their own statistical experts whose opinions have no official sanction.

No matter what, please tip generously for good service. Thank you.

  • bkmn

And no children were harmed by this march, which is something the Roman Catholic Church can not state for themselves.

  • Todd20036

Anyone notice how at our parades, people look like they’re actually enjoying themselves, while at the “White Power” and Trump parades, people look like they’re trying to defend their reasons for gathering at all?

    • JWC

with the Trump agenda the day may come where are Pride parades may show faces of defence

    • glass

I was thinking the white power gatherings look like a population of people who really, really, really need some fiber in their lives.

Brave Poles. It is still a heavily Roman Catholic country, and the people give priests and the whole church great deference. A lot of that is because the church was a stalwart against oppression during WWII and communist era, rightly so, I believe.

But now it’s just another religion that instill fear in the people and is aligned with conservatives to promote conservative values. So you know what that means: lots of priestly abuse of children. When any insitutionsl has no checks and balances, there is trouble.

    • Lazycrockett

Well Pope JP pretty much brought down the communist regime in Poland. So yeah the CC has a huge influence.

      • Adam King

And cultural change through activism is something Poles are familiar with.

    • Polish women surrounded Parliament for reproductive autonomy. Meanwhile the childbirth mortality rate in US continues to climb and Catholics take over more hospitals. ACLU is suing UCCB.
4 in 5 white evangelicals, 3 in 5 white Catholics and Mormons — “pro-life” voters — brought us the Trump nightmare. Culture of life my ass.

Interim Ambassador. Trump’s billionaire appointee hasn’t been nominated/confirmed! wiki

Robert Wood “Woody” Johnson IV (born April 12, 1947) is an American businessman and philanthropist. He is a great-grandson of Robert Wood Johnson I (co-founder of Johnson & Johnson), and the owner of the New York Jets of the National Football League. Johnson is President Donald Trump’s announced selection for United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, although he has not yet been officially nominated to the post.

I’m more convinced by the day hour that Trump is showing advancing dementia and that the various agencies and departments of the government are just working around Trump while the WH inner circle tries to hide him in the attic as best they can. Hence the two days in a row of golf skipping his own pre-planned rally.

A lesbian couple I know went on a tour of Eastern/Central Europe in ’15 or ’16 and they loved Poland and couldn’t say enough great things about the people there. They thought Austria was pretty but boring and Hungary was kind of weird, but overall enjoyed all the countries. But none as much as Poland.

But I have to think, and I told them this, that their experience would have been very different if they were two gay men instead of two lesbians. In most of these semi-to-very homophobic countries, all the hostility is focused on gay men while they more or less ignore lesbians.

    Pig. It’s What’s for Dinner

My partner loves all things pork, but is not a fan of American-style barbecue. He claims it’s too sweet and sticky. I agree. So I just threw on four full racks of pork ribs rubbed down with a commercial spice mixture of Pico Limon (it’s normally used for sprinkling on paper cones filled with fresh fruit — goes great with mangos), a couple of cans of chipotles (made into a paste using the blender), sea salt, and the juice of four sour oranges (available at latin food grocers — sometimes. If you can’t find them, use four lemons).
Fresh crushed garlic if you like garlic. Garlic is good for you. It’ll make your dick grow. If you don’t have a dick, it’ll make you happy and rich.

Rub the chipotle paste all over the ribs, both sides
Sprinkle with Pico de Limon and salt, both sides.
Throw slabs of pork ribs on open grill.
Sprinkle the juice of the sour oranges sparingly on the top of the ribs.
Cook covered for an hour and maybe 15 minutes. Until the ribs are thoroughly cooked through after turning them several times with a sprinkle of the lemon or sour orange juice after each turn).
Just to piss everyone off, you can leave them on an extra five minutes until they char. I like charred meat. Just ask my partner.

Alternate Oven Cooking: Wrap each slab in double aluminum foil after dousing with juice, salt, Pico de Limon. Place on middle rack in oven and bake at 350 F for about three hours.

Note: This loose barbecue recipe is not intended to replace your own favorite way of cooking ribs, especially if you’re into arguing about dry rubs versus wet, Kansas City style versus Carolina style. And if you think Texas is the epicenter of barbecue you need to travel more. Unlike Texas barbecue these ribs will not taste like they’ve been lovingly slow cooked over burnt tires.

Let the ribs sit for 15 minutes after you remove them from the grill or oven, then slice them up and serve.

    Side Dishes
Vegetable: Peel and slice up several large yellow onions, double wrap tightly in aluminum foil and cook on top of grill or in oven until translucent brown and sweet.
Salad: I prefer a cole slaw made of thinly sliced purple cabbages, shredded carrots, raspberry vinegar, tablespoon of sugar and about two tablespoons of caraway seeds.

This afternoon’s beverages: Tequila (straight) and ice cold beer (preferably Mexican).

    • johncAtl

Take him to eastern North Carolina. Their style of BBQ is pork cooked with vinegar. My dad was from NC and owned a grocery store in FL when I was little, and he make it to sell occasionally. It always sold out.

Funny you should mention that. After learning that the perennial best-selling books in this era of non-readers are cookbooks. So, I’m doing my best at cobbling together a cookbook that covers regional Mexican/American cuisine of New Mexico/Arizona/Utah/Central Valley, CA. Everyone is queer for TexMex. I’m interested in the traditional recipes and foodways of Mexican Nationals who have moved to the western states. I’m gonna make a majillion dollars! 😉

I’ve been cooped up with stomach flu the last few days and needed to get out so I went to an open air art show in the neighbourhood. As with any uncurated show, the work ranged from ‘wow, I love that’, to ‘that’s well done but not in my sweet zone”, to “I guess it’s good but I’m so sick of that style”, all the way down to “no, please. Just stop. Just stop doing that and showing people.” Anyhoo, I did see an artist that I do love and bought a small transfer print of one of his larger paintings. It seems to capture the feeling of contemplative despair I’ve been feeling (as many of you have) but with a dash of hope. Buzzfeed has a reporter covering the demonstrations in Portland live. The Antifa started marching through the streets and eventually they got to a block where the police penned them in then announced that it was an unlawful assembly and ordered them to disburse. Except they couldn’t because the police have them blocked in. Then an Al Jazeera America reporter apparently got hit with pepper spray and maybe shot with rubber bullets. So things are going well. One thing from being around MSU for years: the police are terrible at crowd control. Win or lose a big game? That’s blocking all streets, clearing the bars early, and a tear gassin’ when there is no place to go. They’ve gotten better over the years, but when one spends $200k on police “protection” and only $1200 in damage occurs ($1k was someone stole a big boy statue that was later returned), things are ridiculous. Thankfully after MSU’s last big loss the students took to throwing bagels. I really have no idea why.

      • Lazycrockett

Where the hell are you going to hide a BB statue??

Just remembered the night I came home from the library to find our room mate had filled our large bathroom (old Mormon mansion) orange/white with blinking traffic barriers. We kept them. They made great towel racks.

      • SoCalGal20

Hahaha I used to live in Brody Complex and the first big snowfall of the year traditionally begins (or at least did at the time I was going there) with a huge snowball fight between South Complex and Brody. So it’s dark outside, the snow is falling. All of a sudden we could hear the roar of South Complex arriving for the snowball fight. Then all the Brody dorms emptied. So my friends and I observed from the comfort or our dorm room as eventually the police came and ordered people to go back to their rooms lol.

        • safari

Did you have midnight screams during finals week? When I was a u-grad every midnight during exam week would have the dorm students shout out their windows at the stroke of 12. Eventually that degraded into roving bands of undergraduates and the feeling of a Mardi Gras as tops began to come off. DPPS was not happy.

          • SoCalGal20

            I don’t remember that.

          • safari

I imagine it doesn’t happen like that anymore. The university really doesn’t like mobs.

      • i remember when MSU students had a riot so hard, they were burning cars. this was a few years ago, after a winning sportsball game. i sort of loved it. i used to live very near campus, and always thought it was awesome when the students rioted. (Michigan State University, the original party school, for those who don’t know. My family used to teach there)

      • fuzzybits

That happened a few years ago when OSU won against MSU. Cars were set on fire, along with dumpsters, couches, you name it. Personally after living here so long the amount of time people pay attention to football is ridiculous.

I’m very fond of ghost shrimp. I’ve raised other species (red cherry, orange delight, bamboo, etc. But ghost shrimp are easy peasy and will readily accept food from your fingers. The females loaded up with green eggs are especially alien from other planet looking. Love em. Very good scavengers in the event you accidentally over feed a tank of expensive tropical fish. 🙂

      • Cuberly

Easy peasy is a good thing…lol…I just finished cycling/acclimating the tank, this is it’s first resident, outside of the plants of course.

Funny, the shrimp follows me depending on where I am in proximity to the tank. Of course fish do that in anticipation of being fed. But this little one just stays on the bottom of the tank and will move to wherever I’m at. Kinda cute in a way.

And yeah, sure seems like it eats constantly, seeing those hair thin little arms shoveling in whatever’s within reach. Right now it’s helping out with some algae issues.

OT: One of Trump’s childhood churches renounces him.

    http://www.rawstory.com/2017/06/trumps-childhood-church-no-longer-wants-him-his-policies-go-against-our-biblical-teaching/?comments=disqus

“A new CNN report on President Donald Trump’s fraught relationship to Christianity reveals that the president may be unwelcome in his childhood church in Queens — and that the son of the last religious leader he was close to has publicly renounced him.

According to the report by journalist MJ Lee, the evolution of Trump’s quasi-Christianity took him from First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, Queens, where he was raised and confirmed, to Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan.

Although Trump was close to Marble’s former reverend and author of the bestselling self-help book “Power of Positive Thinking” Norman Vincent Peale, the late pastor’s son has publicly rebuked the president. Prior to the election, Peale’s son John said he “cringes” when Trump invoked his fathers name on the campaign trail.”

OT – Trump’s not the only one using London for political purposes. Beatrix von Storch (the homocon candidate of the neofascist AfD party, i.e., the Marine Le Pen of Germany) went on a tweetstorm today about how “the problem is called islam” and “Merkel is responsible” for the London attacks.

BTW, we need a new word besides ‘homocon’, because ‘conservative’ doesn’t really capture the views that von Storch, Milo, etc. represent. More like homofascists or homosupremacists. But then, what would Bryan Fischer and Tony Perkins do with that contradiction? Their heads would explode.

Lobster has been booming in recent years, both in size and in numbers. It’s due to the rise in sea temperature, so with Trump we can look forward to plentiful lobster in years to come.

      • Hue-Man

        BUT

Warming sea surface temperatures from climate change are forcing populations of the American lobster (Homarus americanus) to higher latitudes than ever before—and upending fishing communities on the New England coast.

The lobster industry in New York and southern New England has nearly collapsed. From 1996 to 2014, New York’s registered lobster landings dropped 97.7%—from 9.4 million pounds in 1996 (the state’s most profitable year) to 215,980 pounds in 2014 (the latest data available). The story is much the same in Connecticut, where landings fell 96.6% from the most profitable year, and in Rhode Island, which saw a 70.3% drop from its most profitable year.

        https://www.climate.gov/news-features/climate-and/climate-lobsters
At least the website is still up!

        • That_Looks_Delicious

There appears to be several different things going on with the lobster numbers increasing due to temperature rises, but also increasing acidification of the oceans causing some lobster species to mature too small, and making the Maine lobsters mature too soon, which makes them vulnerable. Quite a lot of different effects. Lobsters seem to be one of our canaries in the global warming coalmine.

In the 1970s there was a wild ass red neck yahoo tea bagger in training who was shooting up the desert south of Phoenix. He had spent the morning using a 200 year-old Seguaro cactus for target practice. When he walked up to change the paper target the cactus fractured in two and fell on him. The police estimated he didn’t die immediately. He sort of lingered for about 30 or so minutes before giving up the ghost. I like that story. 🙂

Good God, is a war about to break out in the Middle East?

    🙁

    • safari

Evidently. Things are terrible when nations close borders and order foreign citizens to leave with in 14 days.

I’m trying to play catch-up with this news about the gulf states myself, but it is unbelievably complicated with Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Russia involved as well.

      • billbear1961

Has Qatar DONE something, or is it being set up by a lot of bullies?

I know they’ve been accused of financing fanatics, but so have several other Arab states, including SAUDI ARABIA!

          (Fucking TRUMP!!)

Yes, the murderous bastards are working HAND IN GLOVE, to our unending SHAME!!

        • safari

The UAE ambassador had his email account hacked. It showed he was coordinating with a neo-con pro-Israeli group out of DC on terrorism. Qatari media picked up on this and started to try to drive a wedge between UAE and Saudi Arabia. Evidently there was also some fake quotes spread about the leader of Qatar saying bad things to also piss off those nations. Plus UAE and Saudi Arabia are on Donald’s list of dance partners in the region (and Jared likes them) because they are considered moderate after the Arab Spring and don’t like Iran, so we’re probably going to give them a pass on this.

        • That_Looks_Delicious

What I’ve been able to gather so far: Qatar has been getting accused of all kinds of things and even having disproven, fake news stories broadcast all over about it, by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrein. This has been building for four years it appears. Qatar’s “original sin”, if you will, was suggesting that the Gulf Cooperation Council should try to build good relations with everybody around the Persian Gulf, including Iran and Iraq. The three mentioned before went nuts about this, and the other two members of the GCC, Kuwait and Oman tried to use their “neutrality” to ease tensions between Qatar and the other 3. Qatar also recently accused Saudi Arabia and the UAE of being behind the attempted coup in Turkey.

          • billbear1961

Jesus, reading your post and safari’s, what a MESS!

          • That_Looks_Delicious

The bottom line is the entire Persian Gulf region is a powder keg ready to go off and start WW3, and we have incompetent, dishonest, Putin-compormised grifters running the WH while this is going on.

          • safari

NatGas/RosNeft is where the money in bashing Qatar leads.

        • AJ Drew

the current flow of money, promised at least, is deals with DT for ammunitions and investments for US infrastructure. SA has ignored the US airbase in Qatar for a decade+, why now is it an issue?

NatGas, not oil. RosNeft and it’s shareholders (ahem, 45*) aren’t too concerned about oil.

        • Lazycrockett

We are up to like 4 or more middle east countries totally shutting down on Qatar. I find it odd that its all bout Qatar supporting the Bro Muslimhood and others. Any country with an intell agency would be aware of this. When Drumpf said at his speech in SA said that “we’re” not concerned with how you treat your people or how you flex your muscle” he basically said go after you enemies. Throw in the new billion dollar arms deal SA is feeling flushed with power and authority. This won’t be fun.

          • the saudis can’t even fly the planes we give them. the royalty love to stand next to them and take pictures, but seriously, as far as an active air force goes, nope.

        • UrsusArctos

Watch Natural Gas, not oil. Putin NEEDS NatGas to jump. With 45* getting a piece of RosNeft it probably was inevitable. At least y’all in Norway get helped by NatGas price hikes.

          • zhera

True. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth, though.

          • UrsusArctos

That’s because you’re a compassionate human. 45*, not so much.

I don’t know how much time we have left, but I have never heard a more beautifully elegant rendition of the first movement of this Telemann oboe concerto.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XLOC-CsF3M

    • i love oboes.

      • billbear1961

Yes, whether it’s expressing joy or melancholy, I don’t think any other instrument surpasses it, or quite equals it.

The oboe and harpsichord are probably, all in all, my favourite instruments.

This first haunting movement has been a favourite for years, and this rendition is choking me up.

I keep listening to it, over and over again.

        • i’m a cello person, myself. i had a lovely asian gf who was quite expert in it. she was very haigh falutin’ but nasty-wonderful in the sack.

I’ve read that oboe players live shorter lives than other classical musicians, due to the demands on their lungs. Wonder if it’s true. I know google-is-my-friend, but I wonder if you’ve heard this. ?

          • billbear1961

I’ve heard it about musicians who play wind instruments, yes; but not that it’s hardest on oboists, no.

Then, again, watch them play–it DOES look like quite an effort is involved!
